Matthew Lillard is a well-known name in Hollywood, despite the actor receiving very few leading roles throughout his career. Still, Lillard has a dedicated fanbase that adores him thanks to his most iconic and entertaining roles. He's appreciated for his natural ability to make the audience laugh, which has defined his career in comedy.
Lillard is known for several memorable performances, but few are quite as popular as his rendition of Shaggy Rogers in Scooby-Doo (2002) and his performance as a villainous slasher in Scream. Even in horror roles, he is known for being comical, solidifying his reputation as a comedy actor. However, Lillard has notably serious roles, such as his character portrayal in TV shows like Good Girls and Twin Peaks: The Return. As Lillard plans to return to the Scream franchise for Scream 7 in February 2026, now is a good time to review his best roles.

Netflix is very quickly becoming the home of previous years’ box office disasters, and to prove a point, 2023’s crime thriller To Catch a Killer starring Shailene Woodley and Ben Mendelsohn is sitting at the top of the streamer’s movie chart. While the film is underrated by some, there is no way to deny that it was a complete flop at the box office, taking just $3.1 million at the box office on its initial release.
Damián Szifron directed and wrote the project, with Jonathan Wakeham also serving as a writer. Szifron and Woodley are also producers alongside Stuart Manashil (Watcher) and Aaron Ryder (Arrival). The movie plays out with very similar traits to The Silence of the Lambs, with a young agent being recruited by the FBI to track down a serial killer with her unique, disturbed view of the world. Oscar-winning writer/director Alexander Payne is one of the most acclaimed writer/directors of his generation. He specializes in films, such as “Sideways” and “The Descendants,” that can be darkly funny while at the same time being extremely moving. His depictions of the flawed character that he creates has almost become a genre unto itself — say a film is “like an Alexander Payne movie,” and film fans will know exactly what you mean.
Payne has a remarkable track record at the Academy Awards — he has made eight films and has earned seven Oscar nominations. Granted, it wasn’t one for each film, but percentage-wise, that’s still enormously impressive. And of those seven noms, he has won two Oscars for co-writing 2004’s “Sideways” and 2011’s “The Descendants.” In addition, he has received four Golden Globe nominations for his directorial work.

Matthew Lillard, who played Stuart ‘Stu’ Macher in the first 1996 Scream movie, is returning to the franchise for Spyglass/Paramount’s Scream 7.
How is that possible? We will see. Does Stu have a twin? Doesn’t look like it from Lillard’s Instagram post. Last we saw the horror-movie obsessed Stu, he was chasing Neve Campbell’s Sidney down 29 years ago, attempting to kill her. However, she had the upper hand, dropping a TV on his head. Also, you’ll remember that Billy and Stu began stabbing each other to make themselves look like the victims — just moments before Sidney kicked their ass.
Scream launched Lillard’s career out of a cannon with the actor continuing on to star in the Scooby-Doo live-action franchise, She’s All That, The Descendants and even a key role in the Blumhouse/Universal hit Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Disney+ is gearing up for a fresh adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, this time with a modern twist aimed at young adults. According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler, known for her roles in West Side Story and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is reportedly being considered for the role of Christine, the young soprano who becomes the obsession of the mysterious Opera Ghost.
However, it’s unclear if she’s already in talks or just on the studio’s radar.
This upcoming version, simply titled Phantom, will be directed by Kenny Ortega, the mind behind High School Musical and The Descendants. Ortega’s adaptation will stick to the classic storyline: Erik, a disfigured musical genius living under the Paris Opera House, falls for Christine and manipulates her rise to stardom.

Yet another adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is in development for Disney+, and the project may now be honing in on its female lead.
According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler is being eyed to play Christine, the object of the titular Opera Ghost's obsession. Whether this means she's actually in talks for the role or simply someone the studio is interested in is not clear.
Titled Phantom, this YA take on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux will be directed and executive produced by Kenny Ortega, who has led two major Disney franchises with High School Musical and The Descendants.
It doesn't sound like Ortega's version will be changing up the basic premise, with the story focusing on Erik, "a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine, and manipulates events to make her the star of the opera.

Ever since just after punk music's messy birth amid the ascent of the Ramones and the Sex Pistols in 1975, there have been punks accusing each other of not being punk enough. That accusation has been levied for pretty much every reason imaginable, but most commonly the cries of "sellout" have been linked to the music not being hard enough, which led to the genesis of pop punk.
While "real" or "traditional" punk music is generally steeped in anti-authoritarian and anti-establishment ideologies, its poppier cousin tends to take itself a little less seriously, and has since given birth to subgenres like skate punk and power pop. For all the name has been used derisively, though, there's no denying pop punk is a genre with mass appeal and decades of history, and pop punk is very much not dead. Here are some of the greatest albums in that history, from pop punk's...

Starring Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon, the film struggled to find its footing at the box office upon its initial release, but years of cable TV showings and streaming have turned it into a cult classic, highly acclaimed for its biting humor. In the film, Witherspoon played a student running in a high school election, though she was already in her 20s when she made the film. The career of George Clooney is as surprising as it is unsurprising. For a man of his looks, charm, and character, he has leaned heavily into that when it comes to the films he makes and the characters he portrays. Films like Ocean's 11, Up in the Air, and Michael Clayton all play into the suave, sophisticated man that Clooney seems to be in real life. Aside from being cool and successful with audiences, though, he has also garnered the attention of critics at various stages of his career. Films like the latter two above, alongside Alexander Payne's gentle drama The Descendants, have given him multiple Academy Award acting nominations. Behind the camera, Clooney has been nominated for his journalist drama Good Night, and Good Luck and the political thriller The Ides of March, while winning for producing the real-life hostage thriller Argo.

Dancing With the Stars has opened the door for new opportunities for some celebrities who have competed on the show. In Season 33, The Bachelor's Joey Graziadei and his fiance Kelsey Anderson went from reality TV stars to popular influencers. Model Brooks Nader and Gleb Savchenko's showmance made constant headlines. Even former mirrorball trophy winner and 90s actor, Alfonso Ribeiro, found himself with a brand-new career as the show's co-host.
However, not every celebrity who gets approached to be on DWTS finds it a great opportunity for their career. A certain Hollywood actor turned down the chance to be a contestant for fears that he wouldn't be able to land any more serious acting roles. For this actor, the thought of competing on the beloved reality TV show would just do the opposite for his career.

Shailene Woodley has been credited with delivering some of the most entertaining pieces of all time, including her fan-favorite Divergent film series and even the 2013 romcom The Spectacular Now. That said, the fact that she once nearly got kicked out of a $177 million film co-starring George Clooney because of her overacting sounds unbelievable. And yet, it couldn’t be truer.

In fact, if she hadn’t begged her agents to get a callback for this particular piece, perhaps Woodley may have even ended up losing out on the role!

Matthew Lillard thought his career would take off after the success of 2002’s live-action Scooby-Doo, which made $275 million worldwide and launched a sequel. He signed on to play Shaggy again in 2004’s Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, scoring his biggest payday yet and believing his career was only going up from there.
“I thought I’d be the top choice for the next 10 years,” Lillard recently revealed. “But the opposite happened.”
When Scooby-Doo 2 flopped and didn’t reach the $200 million the original earned, Lillard’s career stalled, forcing him to rethink his goals. He admitted he’d been too focused on chasing fame and getting big roles.
At one point, he considered doing Dancing With the Stars but realized it might shift him further from his goal of becoming a respected actor. “I told my agent, ‘I just want to act. I want to be in movies. I need to reset my expectations.

Matthew Lillard had much, much higher expectations for the infamous 2004 box-office bomb “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.”
At the time, Lillard had secured the biggest salary of his career to reprise the role of Shaggy for the sequel film. The original live-action/CGI feature “Scooby-Doo” was a massive success in 2002, and the James Gunn-penned film franchise poised Lillard to become an A-list star…or so he thought.
“I thought I’d be No. 1 on the call sheet for the next 10 years of movies,” Lillard told Business Insider. “And the reality was the exact opposite happened.”
Instead, “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” forced Lillard to reexamine his career. After appearing in Wes Craven’s “Scream” prior to “Scooby,” Lillard had to decide whether he wanted to be famous or a “great actor,” in a binary sense.

The 2025 Oscars race for Best Adapted Screenplay has a new front-runner.
“Conclave,” the Edward Berger-directed film that’s written by Peter Straughan and based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Robert Harris, now holds the #1 position to win the adapted screenplay contest at Gold Derby. The movie just opened in U.S. theaters on Friday, October 25. Note that our Oscar odds will continue to change as our Experts, Editors and Users keep making or updating their predictions.
The Focus Features drama stars Ralph Fiennes as Thomas Lawrence, a Cardinal who is tasked with overseeing the election of the late Pope’s successor. But he soon realizes that many of the candidates have personal scandals that could upend the church. Other cast members include Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Bellini, John Lithgow as Cardinal Tremblay, Sergio Castellitto as Cardinal Tedesco, and Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes.

The Disney Channel was massively popular from the early 2000s to around the mid-2010s. During that time, the channel aired several original films and series that defined pop culture with its audience. With films like Camp Rock, The Cheetah Girls, Lemonade Mouth, and The Descendants, as well as series like Hannah Montana, Austin and Ally, Shake it Up, and Violetta, it's safe to say that the Disney Channel dominated the market when it came to teen musicals for kids.
By far the most successful musical franchise the channel launched was the High School Musical trilogy. The massive success of the trilogy eventually spawned a spin-off series in 2019 for Disney+, titled High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. However, many fans may not know that Disney had plans for a High School Musical spinoff several years earlier, titled Madison High. Shailene Woodley has an array of movies that are worth watching again. Whether it is the heartbreaking drama The Fault in Our Stars or the crime movie The Mauritanian, Woodley has a wide range of acting skills. The Divergent star has been in the industry from a young age, but while some of her projects will forever live rent-free in some peoples minds, other movies straight-up stayed in the past, despite their initial success.

In addition to those originals, October will also see a lot of Disney Channel original TV series episodes being added to the Disney+ library so that families can rewatch episodes of their favorite shows.
The influx of serial programming in October follows a relatively light September for the streamer. Four years after his untimely death, Jenna Ortega recalled a moment when Cameron Boyce once stopped an audition because the two young stars felt “uncomfortable” kissing one another as teens.
“Cameron Boyce, the last time I saw my friend Cameron Boyce, I’d known him since I was like 11 or 12, and we were supposed to kiss,” Ortega explained to her “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” costars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara in an interview for Canal+.
“He knew me since I was 11 or 12. This is a few years later, 15, 16, came in, we were supposed to be love interests, but because he obviously felt weird and he was a bit older, he was like … we both just kind of looked at each other and were like, ‘No, we can’t do this.’ It was so sweet, because I was uncomfortable and I was having a hard time in the audition. And then we wished each other well.

A story known for its horror elements and which is now a horror classic is getting a new adaptation on Disney+, and its not the revival I expected for it. The current trend of reboots, revivals, remakes, and legacy sequels has seen both hits and misses. While I admit Im not a big fan of these, some of them have been surprisingly good and have successfully revived franchises or brought back attention to forgotten characters. That said, I would have expected a completely different treatment for a character whos part of the select group of Universals Classic Monsters.

Hollywood’s content contraction, along with the post-pandemic and strike landscape results in less shows overall. Some TV actors criticize their shows due to bad messaging or unwanted character arcs. These concerns can lead to actors quitting shows abruptly, sometimes despite the show's massive success. Hollywood actors like Katherine Heigl and Harold Perrineau have openly criticized their TV shows.
Some actors have been known to criticize their own TV shows, especially TV shows that get worse as they continue. The fact is, Hollywood is a difficult and competitive business and actors may take roles to get their careers off the ground that they are not particularly proud of later on. However, it is also possible that the actor genuinely believed the show in question was worthwhile, but the writers took the story in directions they (and sometimes also the critics) didn't approve of.

Matt Damon's new movie, a heist comedy produced by Apple called The Instigators, has received mixed reviews from critics. Since it was released in select theaters on August 2, 2024, The Instigators has mostly underwhelmed top critics, earning it a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 41%. If this score were to stand after The Instigators releases on Apple TV+ on August 9, Damon's latest film would be his lowest-rated since 2017's Downsizing, which was a rare miss from celebrated directed Alexander Payne.
Damon stars in The Instigators with Casey Affleck, who he notably appeared onscreen with in Good Will Hunting. He and Affleck also co-wrote the 2002 adventure drama Gerry with Gus Van Sant and starred in that as well. Outside of their collaboration on the Ocean's trilogy, Affleck and Damon also both starred in two Christopher Nolan movies despite not appearing onscreen together in either, Interstellar (2014) and Oppenheimer (2023). Matt Damon's New Apple Movie Can Finally Redeem His 2017 Box Office Flop With 47% On Rotten Tomatoes
The Instigators offers a chance for Damon to bounce back from the flop of Downsizing with a heist thriller and familiar co-stars. Since the cast announcement in April 2023, it has been relatively quiet surrounding Killer Heat, the latest movie by Night of the Kings filmmaker Philippe Lacte. Now, Amazon Studios has revealed that the film, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Richard Madden, will be released on the streaming service on September 26.
The Mediterranean noir thriller, which is an adaption of Jo Nesbs 2021 short story The Jealousy Man centers on a damaged detective (Gordon-Levitt) known as The Jealousy Man whos investigating the intriguing case of twin brothers (Madden) caught up in a violent and rough love triangle on the remote Greek island of Crete. Disney's Descendants franchise could have starred Zendaya. Cornelia Frame, former Vice President of Casting and Talent Relations at Disney Channel, recently shared that the Spider-Man: Homecoming star auditioned multiple times for a role in the fan-favorite Disney movie.
"Zendaya did audition many times for Descendants, and that was a big deal," Frame revealed during an interview on the Magical Rewind podcast (via Deadline). "It was a really big deal. She auditioned over and over and really wanted it. It just ended up not going her way." While Frame didn't disclose which role Zendaya auditioned for, she likely tried out for either Mal, daughter of Maleficent, or Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen, which ultimately went to Dove Cameron and Sofia Carson, respectively. "[Zendaya] put so much effort and so much work into it, too. Its just one of those things," the former Disney exec added.

Quick Links What Is Oliver & Company About? Why Did Oliver & Company Perform Poorly? Oliver & Company Deserves Better Than a "Rotten" Score Oliver & Company is Disney's forgotten gem, offering a fresh take on the classic tale of Oliver Twist. Despite its low Rotten Tomatoes score, the film blends nostalgia with a message of diversity and family. The characters in Oliver & Company are complex and relatable, showcasing a different side of Disney storytelling.
Disney is full of hidden gems. As a company with more than a century of history, there are so many movies to explore. While its well-known films like Frozen, Snow White, Mickey Mouse and Cinderella are now mainstream, before the Disney renaissance era, a long-forgotten film that revisits a classic English tale shows a very different side of Disney. With a couple of fan-favorite singalongs, a group of dogs, a cat and a few humans, this 36-year-old film has aged well.

George Clooney is one of those actors who practically all of Hollywood would jump at the chance to work with. He's proven himself to be an impressive performer with his work in movies such as The Descendants, The Ides of March, Michael Clayton, and Up in the Air. He's also directed a fair number of films, most notably the stellar Good Night, and Good Luck, which he is bringing to the stage for his Broadway debut. This has led Clooney to interact with a wide range of actors and directors, and even reunite with them; Jon Watts' crime drama Wolfs will see him re-team with Brad Pitt. But there's one director that Clooney has sworn off working with, due to the fact that a confrontation between him and said director turned physical. That director? None other than David O. Russell, who directed Clooney in 1999's Three Kings.

But even Clooney couldn’t salvage his foray into the superhero world as Batman when his 1997 film Batman and Robin failed miserably and received a lot of criticism.

It seems odd to call someone who is just 32 years old a “longtime environmentalist.” And Shailene Woodley herself dismisses labels like “environmentalist” or “activist.” So … environmental enthusiast? Tree hugger? Whatever you call her, the Big Little Lies and Ferrari star has been actively championing environmental causes since she was a child actor appearing in films like Divergent and The Descendants, from campaigning to create a recycling program at her Simi Valley High School in California to getting arrested protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota in 2016.
Woodley says she has gotten judicious over the years about how and where she uses her platform. Her latest attempt to shed light on an environmental issue has her diving for purple urchins in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Catalina Island in the new PBS docuseries Hope in the Water, from Big Little Lies creator David E. Kelley and chef Andrew Zimmern.
