The Descendants franchise continues to expand with the announcement of four new cast members for the fifth film, set to air on Disney Channel and Disney+. Production on the movie is set to begin shortly, with the new additions bringing fresh faces to the popular series.

Joel Oulette, Zavien Garrett, Ryan McEwen, and Dayton Paradis will join the ensemble, each taking on roles tied to Disney villains. Oulette will portray Robbie Hood, the son of Robin Hood, whose character seems to lean toward a more heroic path. Garrett will play Felix Facilier, the son of the villainous Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog. McEwen and Paradis will take on the roles of twin brothers, Squirmy and Squeaky Smee, the sons of Mr. Smee from Peter Pan.

Netflix is very quickly becoming the home of previous years’ box office disasters, and to prove a point, 2023’s crime thriller To Catch a Killer starring Shailene Woodley and Ben Mendelsohn is sitting at the top of the streamer’s movie chart. While the film is underrated by some, there is no way to deny that it was a complete flop at the box office, taking just $3.1 million at the box office on its initial release.

Max has revealed the full list of featured programming coming to the streaming service in March 2025. Among the highlights are the arrival of a trio of A24 films: Heretic, the psychological horror film in which Hugh Grant terrorizes two missionaries who knock on his door; Sing Sing, the acclaimed drama about a group of incarcerated men who put on their own theatrical production; and Queer, Luca Guadagnino’s adaption of the William S. Burroughs’ novella of the same name.

This month will also see the premiere of the final season of The Righteous Gemstones, a new documentary on the Boston Celtics, titled, Celtics City, and the premiere of Paul American, a new reality series starring Jake and Logan Paul.

Oscar-winning writer/director Alexander Payne is one of the most acclaimed writer/directors of his generation. He specializes in films, such as “Sideways” and “The Descendants,” that can be darkly funny while at the same time being extremely moving. Disney+ is gearing up for a fresh adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, this time with a modern twist aimed at young adults. According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler, known for her roles in West Side Story and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is reportedly being considered for the role of Christine, the young soprano who becomes the obsession of the mysterious Opera Ghost.

However, it’s unclear if she’s already in talks or just on the studio’s radar.

This upcoming version, simply titled Phantom, will be directed by Kenny Ortega, the mind behind High School Musical and The Descendants. “Ghosts” Season 4 has cast Nat Faxon in a guest star role, Variety has learned.

Faxon will appear in an upcoming episode of the hit CBS comedy as founding father Alexander Hamilton, who fans of the show know is the rival of Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones). The episode will air in early 2025.

Faxon is an Academy Award winner, sharing the award for best adapted screenplay with Alexander Payne and Jim Rash for the 2012 film “The Descendants.” He currently stars in the Apple TV+ comedy series “Loot” opposite Maya Rudolph, which is going into its third season. Faxon’s other TV credits include “The Conners,” “Our Flag Means Death,” “Gaslit,” and “Friends From College.” He is also known for films like “The Way Way Back,” which he co-wrote and co-directed with Rash.

He is repped by CAA, Artists First, and Goodman Genow.

“Ghosts” continues to be one of the most popular comedies in the CBS lineup.

Shailene Woodley has joined the cast of the upcoming Broadway play Cult of Love from Leslye Headland, the creator of The Acolyte.

She joins Zachary Quinto and Euphoria star Barbie Ferreira, who have also boarded the play about four adult children from the Dahl family returning to their childhood home with their partners for the Christmas holidays, only to see their harmony interrupted as old and new conflicts arise.

Big Little Lies star Woodley, who currently appears in the Three Women TV series for Starz, is making her Broadway debut, as is Headland. The play’s ensemble cast also includes Molly Bernard, Roberta Colindrez, Rebecca Henderson, Christopher Lowell and Christopher Sears.

Four years after his untimely death, Jenna Ortega recalled a moment when Cameron Boyce once stopped an audition because the two young stars felt “uncomfortable” kissing one another as teens.

“Cameron Boyce, the last time I saw my friend Cameron Boyce, I’d known him since I was like 11 or 12, and we were supposed to kiss,” Ortega explained to her “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” costars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara in an interview for Canal+.

“He knew me since I was 11 or 12. This is a few years later, 15, 16, came in, we were supposed to be love interests, but because he obviously felt weird and he was a bit older, he was like … we both just kind of looked at each other and were like, ‘No, we can’t do this.’ It was so sweet, because I was uncomfortable and I was having a hard time in the audition. And then we wished each other well.

Exclusive: Alexander Payne has lambasted a report from earlier this year that the script for his five-time Oscar-nominated film The Holdovers, which he directed from a script by David Hemingson, was plagiarized.

“It was the stupidest thing in the world,” Payne told us at the Sarajevo Film Festival when asked about the Variety report earlier this year, which dropped on the eve of the Oscar ceremony.

In the piece, Luca screenwriter Simon Stephenson accused The Holdovers script of being plagiarized from his 2013 Black List screenplay Frisco.

“It was irresponsible of Variety to report on that without having read the scripts and comparing them themselves,” claimed Payne. “Do you think The New York Times would have done that?”

Disney's Descendants franchise could have starred Zendaya. Cornelia Frame, former Vice President of Casting and Talent Relations at Disney Channel, recently shared that the Spider-Man: Homecoming star auditioned multiple times for a role in the fan-favorite Disney movie.

"Zendaya did audition many times for Descendants, and that was a big deal," Frame revealed during an interview on the Magical Rewind podcast (via Deadline). "It was a really big deal. She auditioned over and over and really wanted it. It just ended up not going her way." While Frame didn't disclose which role Zendaya auditioned for, she likely tried out for either Mal, daughter of Maleficent, or Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen, which ultimately went to Dove Cameron and Sofia Carson, respectively. "[Zendaya] put so much effort and so much work into it, too. Its just one of those things," the former Disney exec added.

Alexander Payne, whose most recent film “The Holdovers” picked up five Oscar nominations and one win, will receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award at the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival, in recognition of his “outstanding contribution to the art of film.”

Payne’s longtime collaborator Jim Taylor, with whom he shared the 2005 adapted screenplay Oscar for “Sideways,” will join him at the festival, which runs Aug. 16 to 23. Payne will present a special screening of “Sideways,” which earned five Academy Award nominations.

Payne also will hold a masterclass, which will be “an opportunity for the film enthusiasts to learn from him about film production, directing, screenwriting, and other key aspects of his career,” according to a statement from the festival.

Payne’s eight feature films have been nominated for 24 Oscars, including four times for best picture and three times for director. He has won twice for adapted screenplay, and “The Holdovers” won supporting actress this year.
