Back in 2021, Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and director Scott Derrickson brought us an adaptation of the Joe Hill short story The Black Phone (check out our review Here) that appeared to tell a complete story that would stand on its own… but the film was made on a budget of around $16 million and earned over $160 million at the global box office. So, on October 17, 2025, we’ll be getting The Black Phone 2. Filming wrapped in January, and during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Derrickson (whose new film The Gorge was released through Apple TV+ today) said that he’s aiming to surprise viewers with the Black Phone sequel, which is “more complicated” than its predecessor.
Derrickson wrote the screenplay for the first film with C. Robert Cargill, and Derrickson and Cargill have written the screenplay for The Black Phone 2 as well, with Derrickson returning to the helm. He...

Exclusive: Preston Oliver (Secrets of Sulphur Springs), West Mulholland (Steven Soderbergh’s Presence), Ruby Rose Turner (Descendants: The Rise of Red), and Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight) have wrapped production on Someone Saved My Life, a period drama based on the Bloomington, Indiana childhood of Angelo Pizzo, the multi-hyphenate behind titles like Rudy and Hoosiers.
Set in the 1960s, the film follows junior high schooler Dean (Oliver), who strikes up a friendship with the vibrant yet reckless Roy (Mulholland), in an effort to escape his mother’s (Lefevre) controlling grasp. But when the boys’ friendship threatens Dean’s budding romance with Beth (Turner) and his own well-being, Dean must find his own voice, or risk following Roy down an increasingly dangerous path.
Pizzo directed from his own script. Bradley Gallo and Michael A. Helfant produced for Amasia Entertainment, with Jo Throckmorton and Joseph Stern (Judging Amy) also producing. Pizzo exec produced alongside Michael Leahy, Josh Sathre for Amasia, and Sugar Studios CEO Jijo Reed.
Pizzo is a writer, director and producer who broke out with a pair of classic films penned for director David Anspaugh: 1986’s inspirational high school basketball Hoosiers, which landed Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor Dennis Hopper and Original Score (Jerry Goldsmith), and the Sean Astin-led college football drama Rudy, which brought Goldsmith another nomination and is considered to be among the best sports films ever made. Most recently, Pizzo co-wrote The Hill, another sports drama starring Dennis Quaid, which tells the story of a pastor’s son who pursues his dream of becoming a pro baseball player.
Oliver has appeared in Disney Channel’s Secrets of Sulpher Springs, as well as the series Roswell, New Mexico, This Is Us, and Chicago Fire.
Soon to be seen in Steven Soderbergh’s Presence, Mulholland’s also appeared on shows like Animal Kingdom, Little Fires Everywhere, and Legion.
Turner is best known for turns in Disney+’s Descendants: The Rise of Red and Disney Channel’s Coop and Cami Ask the World.
Meanwhile, Lefevre has been seen in The Twilight Saga, shows like Proven Innocent, and more.
Oliver is repped by Lbi Entertainment, Coast to Coast Talent Group, and Schreck Rose Dapello; Mulholland by Seven Summits Pictures & Management and Osbrink Talent Agency; Turner by Definition Entertainment, CAA, and Skrzyniarz & Mallean; and Lefevre by Gersh, Alternative Agency, Pearl Hanan Management, and Meyer & Downs.

Now that 2024 has come to a close, it’s official, Netflix once again handed out the most cancellations in the calendar year – though at this point, I don’t think anyone will find this surprising. While the streaming platform has gotten better as the years have gone by in giving shows final seasons and the chances to establish themselves with audiences, the streaming platform continues to have some of the biggest cancellation rates in the business and 2024 was no different.
In total, Netflix canceled 16 shows in 2024 while also handing six additional shows their walking papers with final season orders which are about as close to cancellations as you can get the only difference being that those lucky six shows will get to actually wrap up their runs with proper sendoffs. So when you combine the two groups, Netflix decided to end a whopping 22 shows in 2024 be it by canceling them directly or ordering final seasons.

Disney Channel has officially canceled The Villains of Valley View ten months after the live-action comedy’s second season ended its run on the network. Chris Peterson, who co-created and executive produced the series with Bryan Moore, shared the news on X.
“While it was never our intention to end the series on a cliffhanger, we hope that Amy, Hartley and the Maddens will live on in your hearts (and on Disney+) forever,” Peterson wrote in his message to fans. (You can read it in full below.)
Disney Branded Television has been overhauling Disney Channel’s lineup of live-action sitcoms. Over the past year, a number of series came to an end, including Bunk’d, Raven’s Home and Secrets Of Sulphur Springs. The Villains of Valley View was the last remaining ongoing live-action comedy, with the first one under the new programming direction, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, set to debut later this month.

Blumhouse has announced a trio of upcoming horror movie release dates today, the first of which is the official date for the sequel to hit video game movie Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will release in theaters December 5, 2025.
Released in theaters and available for streaming on Peacock on the same day, the Emma Tammi-directed Five Night’s at Freddy’s was Blumhouse’s highest grossing movie of all time. In other words, it’s no surprise that the sequel was quickly greenlit.
In last year’s horror movie, “After accepting a security guard job from Steve, Mike (Josh Hutcherson; The Hunger Games Franchise) discovers an abandoned restaurant may actually be haunted by murderous animatronics.”

Like all of Mike Flanagan's projects with Netflix, The Fall of the House of Usher left viewers completely satisfied. Unlike The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, however, this 2023 series pays homage to one of the greatest American writers: Edgar Allan Poe. The series follows the last days of the Ushers, a billionaire clan, as death takes them one by one, and they are simply unable to stop it from happening.
The Fall of the House of Usher is based on Poe's eponymous story, and each character takes their name from a character in Poe's bibliography. Pieces like "The Raven," "The Spectacles," and "Tamerlane" inspired each of these character's storylines and definitely hint at their demise. Poe lovers surely saw it coming, but viewers who went into the series without this information will be surprised to learn about how faithful these adaptations were.

Back in October, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced that The Black Phone 2 will be receiving a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, marking the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” Soon after, it was revealed that the sequel will see the return of Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) as Finney Shaw, Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs) as Finney’s sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as their dad Terrence, and Miguel Mora, whose only previous credit is The Black Phone, as Robin, a friend of Finney’s who was killed in the first movie. Ethan Hawke will reprise his role as The Grabber in the sequel to 2022's horror film The Black Phone, alongside other returning actors Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora. The follow-up film is set to be released on June 27, 2025, after the success of the first film which earned critical praise and grossed $161 million at the box office. Last month, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced that The Black Phone 2 will be receiving a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, marking the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” Now Deadline has broken the news that Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber in the sequel – and he’s joined in the cast by several of his co-stars from The Black Phone! Also returning for this one are Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) as Finney Shaw, Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs) as Finney’s sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as their dad Terrence, and Miguel Mora, whose only previous credit is The Black Phone, as Robin, a friend of Finney’s who was killed in the first movie.
Details on the plot and exactly what the characters will be doing this time around are being kept under wraps.

It was announced earlier this year that Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone is getting a sequel, and Deadline reports today that Ethan Hawke will be back as The Grabber.
Actors Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies (Justified) and Miguel Mora (The Black Phone) are also set to return for The Black Phone 2, Deadline reports.
Universal and Blumhouse will release The Black Phone 2 in theaters on June 27, 2025, and Deadline also confirms that Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill will be writing and producing the upcoming sequel. The first movie was based on Joe Hill’s short story.
No word on whether or not Derrickson will again be directing. Stay tuned.
In the first film, Finney (Thames), a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer (Hawke) and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use.

Madeline has no children but Roderick has many: Frederick (Henry Thomas, The Haunting of Hill House), the eldest offspring, yet a manchild; Tamerlane (Samantha Sloyan,...

When I read that Mike Flanagan was planning to turn The Fall of the House of Usher into an eight-hour mini-series for Netflix I did a major double take. I’ve read the story, and I’ve seen an astounding number of takes on it, from Roger Corman’s classic to reimaginings like The Fall of Usher and Lady Usher. But there was no possible way I could see someone getting eight hours of material out of it.
And I was right, rather than an adaptation of one story The Fall of the House of Usher is an adaptation of Poe’s works en masse with Roderick and his sister Madeline Usher reinvented as heads of a Sackler like pharmaceutical empire.

With its list of new releases for March 2023, Disney+ is premiering another season of arguably its most successful and recognizable series. That’s right: it’s time for more of The Mandalorian. Ever heard of it??!??!?
The Mandalorian season 3 premieres Wednesday, March 1 on Disney+ with “Chapter 17” and will continue to air new episodes weekly. A lot has changed since The Mandalorian signed off in its mind-bending season 2 finale on Dec. 18, 2020. Star Pedro Pascal has continued his destiny as a lone wolf guiding a young cub with The Last of Us. Cara Dune actress Gina Carano did some stuff. And most importantly: The Book of Boba Fett served as a sort of Mandalorian season 2.5. So when you see Grogu a.k.a. Baby Yoda back in season 3 despite jetting off in the season 2 finale, rest assured that that it all makes canonical sense.

Bel-Air, based on Morgan Cooper’s popular fan film that reenvisions the 1990s Will Smith sitcom The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air as a drama, hails from Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group. In its first season, it became Peacock’s most streamed original series.
Set in modern-day America, Bel-Air follows Will’s (Jabari Banks) complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. As these two worlds collide, Will reckons with the power of second chances while navigating the conflicts, emotions, and biases of a world far different from the only one he’s ever known.

None of this would have fazed Din a short time ago, when he was a ruthless bounty hunter who adopted Mandalorian traditions, but now he has someone to protect — and the power of the Force at his side.
