Workers in the nonfiction entertainment division of RadicalMedia are seeking representation from the Writers Guild of America East.
The guild revealed the organizing effort in a memo Wednesday, with an “overwhelming majority” of the 65-member bargaining unit in support. The Wgae also called for voluntary recognition from management at RadicalMedia, which has produced documentaries including Summer of Soul, Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, What Happened, Miss Simone? and Hollywood Black.
The decision to organize “reflects our collective commitment to fostering a collaborative, equitable, and respectful work environment that aligns with RadicalMedia’s core values and aspirations: using storytelling in radical new ways to create a more fair and equitable world,” the newly formed union’s members wrote in an open letter on Wednesday.
In the letter, workers explained that they hope to achieve contract language around workplace conditions, as well as job security and comprehensive benefits.

In 2020, Netflix released Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, an in-depth look at Jeffrey Epstein's sex-trafficking scandal and how he used his power and wealth to cover up his crimes. The docuseries went into detail about Epstein and Guylaine Maxwell's roles in recruiting women (including minors) who later came forward as victims of a molestation "pyramid scheme". Although this Netflix original gave an overview of what happened behind closed doors in the criminal case against the financier, it didn't go into detail about one of the people linked to this operation. The British royal family has been immersed in several headlines, from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepping down as senior royals to the recent online obsession around Kate Middleton, leading her to make a public announcement about her battle with cancer.

Apple is developing a series version of “The Prince of Tides.”
The series would be a remake of the 1991 film of the same name, which was itself an adaptation of the 1986 novel by Pat Conroy. Like the film, the series would follow Tom Wingo, who travels to New York after his sister attempts suicide. While there, he develops a relationship with his sister’s therapist, Susan Lowenstein, while also delving into painful memories from his childhood.
Tate Taylor will write and executive produce the adaptation, with John Norris executive producing with Taylor under their Wyolah Entertainment banner. Craig Anderson and Sharon Hall also executive produce. Sony Pictures Television is the studio.
Sources say that scripts are still being completed for the series. Apple does not comment on projects in development.

The rise and fall of American financier and convicted Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff is the subject of a new docuseries ordered by Netflix. The as-yet untitled series hails from Paradise Lost and Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes director Joe Berlinger and RadicalMedia in association with Berlinger’s Third Eye Motion Picture Company.
Madoff, once the most respected man on Wall Street and the biggest con artist it would ever see,
pulled the levers behind a decades-long, multi-billion-dollar Ponzi scheme that left a devastating financial and human toll. Madoff died in April at Federal Medical Center in Butner, N.C. at the age of 82.
With unique access to victims, whistleblowers, investigators, and archives, the series will explore the cautionary tale of big money, insatiable greed, and a broken system that enabled one man to single-handedly manipulate the global financial market, according to Netflix.

Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell says the beloved HBO adaptation should not serve as a guide for how women should live.
“We never talk about this, but that’s something that women need to think about: You can do a lot less . . . when you have to rely on a man,” Bushnell said in a New York Post interview. “The TV show and the message were not very feminist at the end. But that’s TV. That’s entertainment. That’s why people should not base their lives on a TV show.”
Regarding the super fans who look to the show for guidance, Bushnell minimized the importance of landing your own “Mr. Big” – the now-famous archetype of the elusive, attractive and successful metropolitan man.
“The reality is, finding a guy is maybe not your best economic choice in the long term. Men can be very dangerous to women in a lot of different ways,...

The messy legal battle over Netflix’s Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich docuseries has now gotten down and dirty.
In a flurry of filings Monday, the streamer, director-showrunner Lisa Bryant, executive producer Joe Berlinger, and producers RadicalMedia LLC and Leroy & Morton Productions LLC all denied Alan Dershowitz’s claims of defamation and more made in May this year when he said he was hoodwinked into appearing in the high-profile series in 2019.
In very similar language from their mutual attorneys at Palm Beach’s Shullman Fugate Pllc and NYC’s Davis Wright Tremain Llp, they all also denied there was any special deal to show Dershowitz’s so-called “materials” or “evidence” of his non-involvement with then-teenager Virginia Giuffre, as they looked at the widely publicized allegations that he had sex with a minor groomed by the now mysteriously dead convicted sex offender.

Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz on Wednesday filed an $80 million lawsuit against Netflix over the four-part documentary Filthy Rich, which debuted on the streamer last year. AP broke the story.
Director Lisa Bryant’s docuseries centers on stories from survivors of abuse at the hands of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who used his wealth, power and connections to carry out his abuses. Epstein committed suicide in his jail cell in 2019.
One of the survivors, Virgina Giuffre, says in the docuseries that she was 17 when she was hired as a masseuse for Epstein, was soon groomed to have sex with Epstein, Dershowitz and other powerful men as part of a sex-trafficking ring.
Dershowitz, who once defended Epstein in a Florida case, denies Giuffre’s claims and has called her “a serial liar who has deliberately made up stories about me and others in the hopes of cashing in on millions of dollars.

While many networks have been forthcoming with decisions for the bulk of their scripted series, Fox has been holding its cards close to its chest.
The network has now announced that 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star and The Resident will be a part of its 2021-22 TV schedule.

Malcolm Bright can unfortunately add “abandonment issues” to his long list of troubles. Fox has cancelled Prodigal Son after two seasons, TVLine has learned, turning the May 18 season finale into a series ender.
Fox declined to comment, but a network insider tells TVLine that the decision to pull the plug on the dramatic thriller was an “incredibly difficult” one, adding, however, that Prodigal Son‘s viewership was just too small to justify bringing it back for a third season.

Network has also decided against “Blood Relative” pilot
Fox has decided not to move forward with two drama pilots, “Blood Relative” and an untitled drama that was to follow three kids as they tried to make a shot-for-shot remake of Steven Spielberg’s “The Goonies.”
The network was said to be happy with both but ultimately decided to give series orders to “Monarch” and “The Cleaning Lady” instead, a person with knowledge told TheWrap.
“Blood Relative” was to star Melissa Leo as Louise Kelly, a genetic genealogist who applies her talents to crime scene forensics. Tate Donovan and Tyrone Marshall Brown were also set to star.
The “Goonies” re-enactment series did not have title but was described as such: “After failing to make it in New York and carrying a heavy secret with her, Stella Cooper returns to her distressed automotive hometown to substitute teach. She finds inspiration, hope, and...

Musical series is from Melissa London Hilfers
Fox has handed out a straight to series order for country music drama “Monarch.”
The series is from creator Melissa London Hilfers. Michael Rauch will serve as showrunner. Gail Berman and Hend Baghdady of The Jackal Group will executive produce alongside country music manager Jason Owen.
Here is the logline for “Monach:” “Monarch” is a Texas-sized, multigenerational musical drama about America’s first family of country music. The Romans are fiercely talented, but while their name is synonymous with honesty, the very foundation of their success is a lie. When their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, Nicky Roman, the heir to the crown, already battling an industry stacked against her, will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy.
Owen’s client roster includes Kacey Musgraves, Faith Hill, Dan + Shay, Little Big Town, Kelsea Ballerini, Midland, as well...

Show starring Elodie Yung hails from Miranda Kwok and Shay Mitchell
Fox has ordered its immigration/mob-crime drama pilot “The Cleaning Lady” to series for the 2021-22 season, the broadcast network said Friday.

But when the system fails and pushes her into hiding, she refuses to be beaten down and marginalized. Instead, she becomes a cleaning lady for the mob and starts playing the game by her own rules.”
Created by “The 100” writer Miranda Kwok based on an Argentine series of the same name, “The Cleaning Lady” is executive produced by Kwok, showrunner Melissa Carter and pilot director Michael Offer, as well as “Pretty Little Liars” alum Shay Mitchell, Rose Marie Vega and Paola Suarez.

Liz Heldens-created series is described as “an innovative show-within-a-show”
After a long delay due to the coronavirus pandemic, Fox has ordered the Scott Foley-starring dramedy pilot “The Big Leap” to series, the broadcast network revealed Wednesday.
Created by “Deception” mastermind and “Friday Night Lights” alum Liz Heldens, the “big-hearted, rowdy dramedy” follows “a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck characters attempting to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show that builds to a live production of Swan Lake. What this group of underdogs lack in dance training, they make up for with their edge, wit and desire to reimagine an iconic story to fit their own mold.”
Based on a U.K. reality format, “The Big Leap” is described as “an innovative show-within-a-show that takes viewers on a journey of self-acceptance, body-positivity and empowerment at any age” and “a modern tale about second chances and...

The new Starz documentary series Confronting a Serial Killer is captivating, immersive and infuriating. One of the first things we learn is how victims are parsed through the criminal justice system. On the scale of homicide priorities, “pretty white college students are the most dead, black hookers are the least dead.”
Because it tells a story about an under-represented and largely dismissed cross-section of the community, Confronting a Serial Killer focuses on the victims. Even the journalist spearheading the investigation is a survivor. Putting a human face and voice to statistics is a slowly growing trend in true crime coverage. It was recently done in Peacock Originals’ John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise. But the Killer Clown is one of the most recognizable names in the history of homicide. While Samuel Little may have racked up a higher body count, his is a lesser-known name.
Little extinguished 93 lives over four decades.
