When Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his West Village apartment on Sunday, full and empty envelopes of heroin marked with an ace of spades were discovered near his body.

Philip Seymour Hoffman's 'Ace of Spades' Heroin

In total in Hoffman’s apartment, law enforcement agents found 49 sealed bags of heroin and 23 bags that were empty. Forty-nine of the bags bore the Ace of Spades label, while the remaining 13 were labeled with Ace of Hearts, reported the New York Post. The heroin brand Ace of Spades was prevalent in the New York City area a number of years ago, but has recently seen a resurgence.

In 2009, Ace of Spades heroin was found in a major bust in Queens after a prolonged investigation, according to the Daily Beast. “This investigation targeted a form of powdered heroin that is easily inhaled rather than injected,” U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said in a statement.

Russell Brand at an event for Arthur, un amour de milliardaire (2011)
How about some wee-tail therapy? Russell Brand went looking for love Saturday when he stopped by an adoption event organized by Ace of Hearts, an animal rescue group in Beverly Hills. The newly single actor, sporting a beard and looking casual in loose pants and a flowing shirt, spent some time with fans but zeroed in on - what else? - the dogs. Brand, like his ex Katy Perry, is an animal lover and already has a cat named Morrissey. He was perhaps looking to bring home a new pet and lingered over a group of adoptable dogs. Fantasia Film Festival 2011– Four Wild Cards #4 ‘Love’
The Fantasia Film Festival is celebrating it’s 15h anniversary, and they are doing it in style. Launched in 1996 with little financial backing, the festival has grown into one of the world’s largest genre film fest, fresh off a record year of 100,000 spectators in 2010. Fantasia has without a doubt become one of Montreal’s premiere events with four weeks of insanity, no sleep, heavy partying and dozens of great movies to watch. As with every year, the wonderful programmers (and I do mean that, because they are such nice people) have crammed as many movies as they possibly could into a four week program. This year I’ve counted around 126 films screening at the event and we still have no clue what those TBAs are. While festival goers are busy checking off the big name movies (Don’t Be Afraid of The Dark, Red State, Attack The Block), they...

Anniversaries: Mission of Burma’s Signals, Calls, and Marches Released 30 Years Ago
Mission of Burma: Signals, Calls, and Marches (Ace of Hearts)

It's apt that one of the great American indie albums was released on Independence Day.

In 1980, Mission of Burma had caused a little stir with a 7" single: "Academy Fight Song"/"Max Ernst." The A-side was an instant classic among the few people who heard it, but it was the follow-up, the six-song Ep Signals, Calls, and Marches (excellent example of the serial comma!) that established the quartet in the forefront of the American indie-rock scene.
