In rowing, timing is everything. The classic 8 has eight rowers who need to do everything at the same time to not throw the boat off-balance. "Swing" refers to that a-ha moment when everything just works. The timing is crisp and all individuals are acting together as a singular boat rather than 8 individual people. Like in every other sport, these perfect moments don't always happen and a boat is still plenty fast without swing. The thing that is unique about swing is that the boat feels like it's effortlessly gliding through the water, the boat is almost flying. Every crew hopes to have swing or a swing moment, but very few experience it regularly
