‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’ Review
Image
Stars: Tim Key, Tom Basden, Carey Mulligan | Written by Tim Key, Tom Basden | Directed by James Griffiths

For many, getting a favourite musician to play a private gig is a dream scenario. But as fan culture often has toxic results, it is understandable that this scenario could deliver an unsettling thriller akin to Misery or Blink Twice. The Ballad of Wallis Island instead takes a kinder approach, which leaves a massively sweet surprise for viewers.

Based on the 2007 short film, The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island, the story takes place on the remote Wallis Island where eccentric lottery winner Charles Heath (Tim Key) lives alone. He has hired his favourite musician, Herb McGwyer (Tom Basden), to play an exclusive private gig. Herb intends to grin and bear it to fund his next solo album, but is surprised upon discovering that he will not be playing alone, as...

Cobie Smulders joins The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 in seemingly big role
Image
Haaaaaave you met Cobie Smulders in The Lincoln Lawyer season 4? Well, we haven't yet, but we're going to whenever the hit legal drama returns to Netflix. Variety reported on June 2 that Smulders has been added the fourth season of the Netflix original series, and while a lot of mystery continues to surround the How I Met Your Mother star's role, it seems to be a potentially big one.

According to a tease from Deadline about Smulders' role in The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 finale, there's a possibility that her character could return in the currently unconfirmed season 5. Again, there's not much known about who she's playing, but Deadline shares that Smulders plays Allison, "an important character connected to Mickey." I don't know about you, but that sounds like a pivotal role!

Smulders hasn't had a sizable role in a major television series lately, though she recently guest starred in the Apple TV+ comedy-drama Shrinking,...

The Ballad Of Wallis Island Review: Delightful Oddball Musical Drama
Image
Win the national lottery once and you’d be considered one of the luckiest people currently alive. Win the national lottery twice and you’d be firmly in a reality-adjacent world where the whimsical isn’t just an abstract idea, but the guiding principle underlying the central premise in The Ballad of Wallis Island, an utterly delightful comedy-drama co-written by — and co-starring two members in good standing of the British comedy troupe, the Cowards — Tom Basden and Tim Key, and directed by James Griffiths. When we first meet Charles Heath (Key), the aforementioned two-time national lottery award winner, he’s comfortably ensconced on the island of the title, a slightly dilapidated mansion up on a hill, and eagerly...

‘New Girl’ Cast: What Are They Doing in 2025?
Image
Back when New Girl first aired in 2011, we as audiences were introduced to Zooey Deschanel’s eccentric teacher Jessica Day, who moved into an apartment loft with three single men, following her bad breakup.

And in the aftermath of her relocation, it was the unexpected events and the roommates/dysfunctional family dynamics that turned the sitcom into a major hit.

A still from New Girl | image: 20th Century Fox Television

So now, after almost a decade, as former co-stars, Zooey Deschanel and Max Greenfield had a mini-reunion at this year’s SAG Awards, it became a major nostalgic moment for the New Girl fans. Not to mention, back in 2024, Jake Johnson, Greenfield, and Lamorne Morris had even admitted to being open to the idea of coming back.

But sadly, as the revival is yet to happen, let’s take a look at the main cast of New Girl, and what...

How I Met Your Mother Stars Cobie Smulders & Jason Segel Reunite 10 Years After Finale
Image
The next episode of Apple TV+'s Shrinking is going to be legen—wait for it—dary. How I Met Your Mother alums Cobie Smulders and Jason Segel will be appearing on-screen together for the first time since the CBS sitcom went off-air in 2014.

People shared several first look images from the Wednesday, Dec. 11 episode, which finds Segel's main character, Jimmy, looking to purchase a yellow Volkswagen vehicle from Smulders' Sophie. Jimmy arrives at Sophie's house to inspect the vehicle with his next-door neighbor, Derek (Ted McGinley), who claims to be good at negotiating. It's too early to tell if the Shrinking reunion will feature any subtle (or perhaps not so subtle) callbacks to Segel and Smulders' time together on How I Met Your Mother. Still, with less than a week to go until the episode drops on Apple TV+, fans won't have to wait long to find out.

10 Underrated Recent Detective TV Shows You Probably Missed
Image
This article contains references to violence and assault.

Detective and crime TV shows are always being produced, and while some make headlines, there are plenty that fly under the radar. However, that doesn't mean these shows are any less compelling or lack the drive to capture audiences' attention. While the crime procedural uses many of the elements of the detective series, there's a central difference between them. Procedurals focus on a new crime every week, while most prestige detective shows look at an overarching narrative that takes many twists throughout a season. This creates further opportunities for character development and narrative turns.

Plenty of detective TV shows like Sherlock follow the story of a central investigator who's tortured by their past but is also the best at what they do. However, the other characters who make up these dramas' ensembles are equally important, as the mystery of who committed the...

USA Reenters Scripted With ‘The Rainmaker’ Reboot From Jason Blum
Image
USA Network is reentering the scripted originals space.

The NBCUniversal-owned basic cable network has handed out a straight-to-series order for a reboot of The Rainmaker, from producers Lionsgate TV and Blumhouse TV, marking its first non-shared scripted series since 2020.

The cabler, which saw its former hits Suits and White Collar pop on Netflix, currently shares linear rights with corporate sibling Syfy to Chucky as its lone scripted series. The drama is the only scripted original to air on the network that previously ranked as the most watched cable network for a dozen years straight.

Based on the best-selling 1995 novel by John Grisham and subsequent 1997 feature film adaptation starring Matt Damon, Claire Danes, Jon Voight and Danny DeVito, The Rainmaker revolves around Rudy Baylor, a fresh out of law school attorney who goes head to head with courtroom lion Leo Drummond, as well as his law school girlfriend. Rudy, along...

Echo Is Disney+'s Second Biggest TV Series In 2024...But It's Still A Long Way From First Place
Image
Variety has shared a piece on 2024's streaming titles, confirming Echo is the second most-viewed series on Disney+ this year so far. It's an impressive achievement, particularly as Marvel Studios dropped all five episodes at once, leading to the show being quickly forgotten.

We've seen in recent years that weekly drops are much better for keeping people talking about new titles (which goes against Netflix's once highly successful streaming model of releasing every episode at once).

Rumour has it Echo suffered from quite a few issues behind the scenes, with six instalments becoming five, as a result. That could explain why they hit Disney+ on the same day, though reviews were somewhat positive as is evident from the show's 71% Rotten Tomatoes score.

However, putting this news into context is the fact, "[Percy Jackson and the Olympians] accounts for nearly a quarter of Disney+ original series viewing time so far...

Murder mystery drama Death And Other Details is heading to Disney+ – and the show even has a new trailer! Have a gander within.

Michael Weiss has been a producer and screenwriter on many successful shows, including Chicago P.D, The Mentalist and the terrific Cobie Smulders private eye comedy drama Stumptown, which sadly only ran for a single series but is well worth watching. It’s currently streaming on Disney+.

Weiss is now co-showrunner of Death And Other Details, a murder mystery drama series heading to Hulu in the US and Disney+ in other territories, including the UK. It looks like a cross between Death On The Nile and The White Lotus, which is a pretty good hybrid if you ask us.

The synopsis reads as follows:

Set amidst the glamor of the global elite, Hulu’s new series Death and Other Details centers on the brilliant and restless Imogene Scott...

Marvel Studios’ Echo gets reactions to the brutality in the first two episodes on social media
Image
Marvel Studios’ new series Echo is only a month away, and it’s turning a lot of heads by boasting the mature content it is said to feature. The show that connects to the MCU joins the gritty takes that have been emulated from similar Marvel shows like Daredevil and The Punisher, which feature lower-level urban-type threats, and our heroes don’t hold back on the brutality of justice or vengeance. The juggernaut film and TV studio recently held an advance screening of the first two episodes and reactions recently have poured onto social media. While the attendees have kept their lips tight on details, they do reiterate how incredibly dark the show was.

A user with the handle @twpercival1 posted, “Saw the first two episodes of #echo tonight and have a lot of thoughts. I think fans of Netflix’s Daredevil are going to love it. It’s like...
