Avoid the dubbed version at all costs.

Rented this movie on Amazon Prime and I had no choice but to rent the dubbed version of this film because the only other option was to buy the Spanish version. Avoid the dubbed version at all costs. One of the worst English dubbing of a film I've ever seen/heard, so it was difficult to fairly judge this movie. The voiceover actors should never be allowed to ruin someone's film like this again. It was worse than a 1960's Godzilla movie. If I were to walk down the block and grabbed strangers off the street, they would've done a better job. I'll have to watch this film again when I can see it for free and possibly revise my review then.

Cruel movie, but fascinating to follow

From technical point of view, the movie is probably 6 stars movie. However, the movie does small and little things right and it does the basic stuff right. After the final act, it almost feels like I want to give it 8 because the movie concludes everything what is required considering what the movie gives at the first act. Story gets captivating to follow that what is going to happen next. It's actually brilliant in that sense.

The movie is cruel in places but I suppose that it is the purpose of the movie and thus it delivers what it's expected. What comes to violence or gore, I think that it's managed very well. Not too little or not too much but good balance in right places.

Laura Galan (Sara) makes actually superb performance. She plays her part very well and I think she manages to kind of trick the viewer by the end of the movie. Too bad that the villain is not that convincing since it's almost like a the beauty and the beast kind of story. I also did like Carmen Machi (Sara's mother). She plays her part very well. I think she actually turns some things in the movie to comedy but at the same time she's very convincing.

The movie would be totally 8 starts or even 9 with a little bit of bigger budget and little bit of refinement in the overall production. Go and see it.

Good

Not everything works (the 2nd act is a bit too long, some characters' decisions are a bit questionable too), but this is really well done.

The first act is as uncomfortable as necessary and the most engaging part of the film IMO. Without it, you wouldn't get the motivations, the internal doubts, and the grey areas of our main character.

Even if it drags a bit in the middle, the third act is strong and the finale delivers. After being seen for the first time, everything changes, and now even her calls for help are heard.

Great performance by Claudia Salas and confident direction by Carlota Pereda.

Could have been better

"Piggy" is an interesting flick that could have been better. It's the kind of movie where you wish a different, more capable filmmaker had been given the job of making a movie with the same themes. It evokes real-life issues but doesn't really say much about them. In that regard it is almost annoying.

Sara is an overweight girl living in small-town Spain where she is bullied by girls who nicknamed her Piggy. One day she decides to go to the pool, where she encounters her bullies. They harass her with horrible verbal humiliation, and then even attempt to drown her.

Sara later sees that the girls have been kidnapped, seeing them taken away in a van. She ignores their pleas for help and decides not to tell anyone what happened.

Sara, the titular "Piggy", is a rare survivor of bullying who gets the opportunity to take revenge. She was entirely at the mercy of her bullies, but they end up in an even more precarious position in front of her.

One problem with the movie is that we never really feel for Sara, despite seeing the nightmare the other girls put her through. The movie depicts her at an odd distance, seemingly assigning us the role of bully too. Bullies don't see the real person, they just see whatever the dislike about themselves, and go after it. We never really see Sara as a real person either.

It feels like the movie raises genuinely timely issues but doesn't really do anything with them. It's also never really convincing. The filmmakers needed to engage us on the character level, to put us in Sara's world. But hardly any of them seem to know how to do that.

Real good

This is a delightful, grim tale of a lone fat girl who is bullied by everyone around her except her dear, sweet dad - and the killer. Great cinematography and acting are well directed; it is all encapsulated by a beautiful countryside. Sara tries her hardest to just live her life but she's bullied when she goes out and berated at home. After a particularly harrowing version of the daily insults she endures the very girls who were tormenting her a moment ago are now snatched up by the serial killer who watched as they belittled and tortured her. Sara knows. Sara saw them in his van. And he stops the van and leaves her a towel to cover herself because the bully girls stole her clothes. Her dilemma is whether to tell what she knows and therefore save their wretched selves or keep mum and keep her admittedly evil savior.

Slighty above average film but don't watch with English dub

I had to watch it dubbed in English but expected the dub to be good like any other english dubbed film out today, that was not the case for this film. The English dub is possibly the worst I've ever heard in any film. The people they chose to do the voices were awful and turned a drama into a kid's comedy. Seriously it felt like I was watching a straight up comedy film because the voices were so ridiculously over the top and awful as they didn't match the ages of the characters and it was not natural sounding. They used a grown woman for a little boy's voice and a young woman for the older woman playing the mother. Absolutely could not get past that at all. Made what should have been a serious drama into a joke. You could have hired anyone else and it would have been better than this. Aside from that, the film itself was decent. The acting from all was fairly realistic and I think it was an interesting take on bullying with a twist.

Shocking and entertaining.

Cerdita, aka Piggy, A Spanish movie from 2022.

Sara is an overweight teenage girl, who faces bullying from a group of teenage girls, the so called crowd. After a bullying incident, Sara sees her bullies in trouble, she has a choice to make.

It's another cracker from Spain, Piggy is a wonderfully timed horror thriller, it's bleak, it's thought provoking, it's very relevant.

The interest of course lays right at Sara's feet, after suffering for what would have been a teen's worst nightmare, she witnesses a horrifying event, putting yourself in Sara's place, is she glad her tormenter is in trouble, or guilty for not doing something.

Laura Galan is excellent from start to finish, a competent and capable performance. You see how cruel life can be for a teen that's different, in her case overweight, you see how cruel a group can be, it's very well observed.

The horror, bullying and gore are all measured, nothing is overdone, they could have easily made this into a gore fest, or gone too far, but they didn't.

That ending, I won't be forgetting that in a hurry.

8/10.

Fun ride

The piggy is a very good thrill ride all the way to the end. I saw it's trailer sometime before and I really liked it. The lead performer did a great job and acted very well. Also her mother performed very well. It could be a10/10 movie but it just lack some storytelling I guess. From start to the end it held my attention and the ending was also very good. The movie also gave a good motive to not to bully other person. All in all its a fun thrill ride and held your interest till the end I think YouTube channel alter showed its trailer two or three years ago I can't fully remember. Anyway good watch fun movie recommended.

It could and should have been so much more than what it was...

I saw the trailer for the 2022 Spanish movie "Cerdita" (aka "Piggy") somewhere and it left an impression on me, because as soon as writer and director Carlota Pereda's movie was available, I had to sit down and watch it. And I was actually harboring some expectations to the movie, after having seen the trailer.

The storyline in "Cerdita" started off good and there was a lot of potential to the storyline written by Carlota Pereda, I will say that much. Unfortunately, the movie derailed sometime before the halfway mark, and the movie just lost its momentum and settled into a stale and monotonous pace. What had started out rather well and interesting became a sluggish narrative that seemed random, erratic and semi-confusing. A shame really, because "Cerdita" had so much potential.

It should be said, though, that lead actress Laura Galán (playing Sara) really carried the movie quite well with her performance, and she is an actress with talent; one that definitely is worth paying attention to, because I think she could hit it big time.

Visually then "Cerdita" was an okay movie. You're not going to be in for anything extravagant here. But the special effects were adequate enough for the movie.

I was disappointed with the approach that director Carlota Pereda opted to go with "Cerdita", though I did manage to sit through the entire movie. I am not, however, going to return to the movie a second time.

"Cerdita" is listed as a horror drama, keep in mind here that the storyline focuses on the drama aspect, as the horror is merely a topping to spice up the storyline.

My rating of "Cerdita" lands on a disappointing four out of ten stars.

PIGGY is the right type of film to be one of the last movies in an event such as the Sundance Film Festival.

If you enjoy reading my Spoiler-Free thoughts, please follow my blog to read my full review :)

"PIGGY is the right type of film to be one of the last movies in an event such as the Sundance Film Festival. Carlota Pereda takes advantage of the terrific lead performance from Laura Galán, and delivers a shocking, violent, frighteningly grounded story about bullying, fat-shaming, and self-acceptance.

Despite taking a more revenge-driven approach, the filmmaker beautifully develops the moral concepts at hand. The romantic subplot doesn't really work, though, and the film would have benefited from a stronger atmosphere. In addition to this, just a couple of impactful dialogues surrounding the main themes would have drastically improved the overall piece.

Still, it's definitely a must-watch."

Making Bacon - Very Good

I watched this as part of my ménage a un Shocktober season of horror films. Based on the description I thought this would be another rip-off of Carrie, but it far exceeded my expectations.

Overweight, teenage butcher and hunter, Sara (played by Laura Galán) is bullied by her seemingly more attractive and popular classmates. She is nicknamed Piggy. After a chance encounter with an almost mute maleweirdo at the swimming pool her classmates start to go missing.

This isn't a film for the ages like Halloween or Dawn of the Dead. It is a violent slasher film bordering on the torture porn subgenre of films like Wolf Creek and Calvaire (The Ordeal). The film captures the mentality of small town gossip. The film is helped immensely by some effective cinematography that captures the Spanish countryside and convincing acting. Laura Galán could be one to watch for the future, but how many times have we said that? Jamie Bell, anyone?

Well worth a watch as a shocking, effective horror, but doesn't innovate.

Perfection...

With the summer sun beating down on her rural Spanish town, Sara hides in her parents' butcher shop. A teenager whose overweight makes her the target of incessant bullying, she runs away from a band of capricious girls who torment her at the town pool, only to find them being brutally kidnapped by a stranger, who drives off with them in his van. . When the police start asking questions, Sara is silent. Intrigued by the stranger - a mutual interest - she is torn between revealing the truth and protecting the man who saved her.

Adorable, a Spanish horror thriller out of the box, French and Spanish cinema standing out in the latest productions, the excellent script, revenge is never full, I love revenge, especially when the evil of the century enters the scene, bullying, disgusting and angry , especially Laura Galán, does wonderfully well... A simple script, wonderfully efficient, plausible, bloody, exaggerated, very good, worth every drop of blood... Perfection...

Trash

The movie had potential. But the last 30 minutes ruins everything created before. Shame on script and producers.

First, the main character makes a great job. She was really credible, intense and perfect for the role. On the other hand the other cast mostly acting is pretty weak and amateurish.

Second, the script is full of plot holes. Overall the movie is a total nonsense. To add, is as obvious as predictable as Prince of Bel Air episode.

Last, the mixture of the past with the present doesn't work Why people are driving cars and motorbikes from the 80's in 2022, but at the same time using Instagram and IPhones? Pretty Weird. Not real.

To sum up, I had high hopes on this one, after reading the great reviews, but honestly, even I'm Spaniard, but overall is a wasted opportunity to create something weird, raw and brutal. The result is a plain weird thriller.

A Rare Realistic Horror Movie

"Piggy" stands out in a pool of often unrealistic horror/thriller films. It took me a while to appreciate the main character's seeming weak nature, only to find it well-aligned with the story's objective of portraying reality. This film brings to life a relatable character arc, causing viewers to experience a spectrum of emotions.

Opinions diverge when discussing the relationship between the psychopath villain and the main character-the foundation is unsettling. But the protagonist Sara's emotional journey feels real and rewarding, ending with a powerful lesson for bullies. "Piggy" is more about realistic character development.

Ingenious Idea, Poorly Executed

Really don't know how to describe this film's entirely original perspective, but I definitely don't want to spoil it. I'd have loved to see it better written with more directional flare. Very fresh premise, with a bombshell twist that I haven't seen mentioned in any of the other reviews.

This is a psycho drama, not a horror film. But the spotlight isn't on the killer, but rather his relationship with the main character. This was barely shown on camera but should have been the focus of the story - as it was most likely intended - setting this film uniquely apart.

Beyond that, acting was good, script was not. Really, the whole thing was very poorly written. And still, it's definitely worth a watch. Hope I see it re-made one day.

kept me hooked

Watched this without knowing anything about it, didn't even bother checking out the trailer. Surprisingly good, interesting and well-acted. I like how straight to the point it is, they just stick to the story and what's happening in the present. Although it'd be great if we see more of the guy, 'cause it felt like he was just there commit violence, all I know is he clearly doesn't like bullies and arrogant people so he somehow took a liking to Sara when he saw her being bullied. When the guy started abducting the three girls it kinda reminded me of JD from the movie 'Heathers'.

It's also nice that they didn't make the bullies change what they feel towards Sara right away and still calling her "Piggy" and an idiot while Sara tries to help them. This makes Sara be the bigger person (no pun intended).

All in all a good find, great actress. Would recommend.
