“General Hospital” star Tristan Rogers announced on Thursday that he has been diagnosed with cancer. The type of cancer was not disclosed at press time.

“While he remains hopeful and is working closely with his medical team on a treatment plan, this is a challenging time for Tristan and his family,” read a statement released by a spokesperson for Rogers.

“As they face both the emotional and physical burdens that come with this diagnosis, the family kindly asks for privacy and understanding. They are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support and love from their friends and family,” the statement continued. “Tristan sends his love to his fans and wants them to know how much he appreciates their loyalty and encouragement over the years. This support means more to him now than ever.”

Future updates will be shared if deemed appropriate by Tristan and his family, the spokesperson noted.

As expected, Tracey Thomson has been named co-head writer of “Beyond the Gates” following the exit of Robert Guza Jr..

First reported by Soap Opera Network last month, Guza exited the daytime drama series as an executive producer and co-head writer after fulfilling the terms of his contract. Thomson was named his successor as an executive producer, one of eight, after her name was inadvertently revealed in a press release by CBS announcing that the show had been renewed for a second season.

In her role as co-head writer, Thomson works alongside series creator and head writer Michele Val Jean in crafting the show’s long-term story.

Thomson has an extensive career in daytime, including writing episodes of “General Hospital” and its spinoff, “General Hospital: Night Shift.” She also has substantial experience as co-head writer or associate head writer at “The Young and the Restless” and has written numerous scripts...

First off, it's Billy Dee Williams. Days of Our Lives vet Storms joined General Hospital in 2005 after playing Isabella “Belle” Black on the NBC drama from 1999 to 2004.

This is the second such switch of this character. Storms’ Maxie was temporarily recast in 2011, with Jen Lilley taking over the part until Storms returned in 2012. Storm also took temporary leaves from the show in 2016, 2017 and 2018, ranging from a couple days to a several-months hiatus, with Molly Burnett frequently filling in.

John Reilly, a veteran soap star whose daytime credits included a long stint on General Hospital, died Saturday evening, his daughter confirmed. He was 84 and no cause of death was revealed.

Caitlin Reilly shared the news on Instagram. “John Henry Matthew Reilly Aka Jack. The brightest light in the world has gone out. Imagine the best person in the world. Now imagine that person being your dad. I’m so grateful he was mine. I’m so grateful I got to love him. I’m so grateful I made it in time to hold him and say goodbye. I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do, but I know he’ll be with me. I love you forever Daddy.”

Born in Chicago, Reilly appeared on soap As the World Turns as Dr. Dan Stewart. He then had parts on television shows How the West Was Won, Quincy M.E. and Dallas.

Veteran actor John Reilly, whose daytime-tv credits alone included General Hospital, Passions and Sunset Beach, died on Saturday evening, TVLine has learned. He was 86.

One of Reilly’s daughters, actress and TikTok personality Caitlin Reilly, shared the news via Instagram saying, “John Henry Matthew Reilly Aka Jack. The brightest light in the world has gone out.” A cause of death has not yet been shared.

We have some terrible news to pass along today, as Disney Channel star Cameron Boyce has passed away. According to reports, the young actor died in his sleep after suffering a seizure which was the result of an ongoing medical condition. A family spokesperson confirmed Boyce's death in a statement, saying they are "utterly heartbroken" and asking for privacy at this time. "The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him," the statement reads. Boyce was just 20 years old.

Boyce knew at a young age he wanted to pursue a career in acting, getting his start at the age of 9. In 2008, he kicked off his movie career by appearing in the horror flick Mirrors with Kiefer Sutherland. NBC is adapting the popular Venezuelan telenovela The Black Widow for American audiences. Sri Rao (General Hospital: Night Shift) will write the script. The Black Widow is based on Venezuela's telenovela La Viuda Joven, which premiered in 2011 and aired 142 episodes around the world.

I've read a lot of the commentary about these scenes, and I think Edwin is wildly over-reacting. He acts as if Ron was under some obligation to tell him that was gay, but I don’t think he is. It’s not like it ever came up, and Ron certainly never lied to Edwin about it. I agree with Ron that Edwin is making a big deal about it, mostly because he thinks Ron is after him.

But how does Ron hiding his sexuality, which I don’t feel he did, mean that he is out to snare Edwin? And how would not telling Edwin he was gay help Ron if he really were out to get Edwin? That does not compute to me.

Besides, thus far Ron hasn’t done anything to undermine Lucas and Edwin’s relationship. On the contrary,...

Agnes Nixon, the legendary daytime scribe whose pen gave life to both One Life to Live (in 1968) and All My Children (1970), isn’t ready to write the serials’ epitaphs just yet.

One of our favorite mantras around the AfterElton offices is “because visibility matters.” Indeed, the idea that gay and bisexual men need to be visible, both to ourselves and to the wider culture, is one of the principle reasons AfterElton.com even exists. After all, it is only by being visible to family, friends and the world that we’ve been able to overcome the stereotypes and bigotry used to justify discrimination against the Glbt community.

That quest for visibility explains why we have done so many polls including the AfterElton Hot 100, the Fifty Greatest Gay Movies, the Top 50 Gay TV Characters, and the 50 Best Gay Books. After all, it’s not as if Entertainment Weekly is going to ask gay and bisexual men which guys we think are the hottest, which movies mean the most to us or, in the case of our latest poll, which celebrities we most admire.

Antonio Sabato Jr., the sexy soap star who originated the role of Jagger Cates on General Hospital and its spin-off General Hospital: Night Shift, will embark on a love quest on the new reality dating series, My Antonio, beginning Sunday, August 16 at 10pm on VH1. The 37-year-old actor will choose from 13 beautiful women who will travel to an exotic paradise in Hawaii where they will attempt to capture his heart.

My Antonio, a 10-episode series, kicks off with the General Hospital actor's sexy swim ashore to meet the women competing for his attention. Within the first few moments, however, he makes a shocking elimination, leading the women to realize that anything can happen when Antonio is in charge.

In honor of AfterElton.com’s Hot 100 voting currently underway, I've decided to choose the 12 hottest soap guys we cover weekly in the Gays of our Lives.

Two weeks ago, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) named CBS’ daytime soap opera As the World Turns Outstanding Daily Drama for their storyline centered on gay teens Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer. This was the second year in a row that Atwt won the award.

It was also the second year in a row that Tom O’Neil, who writes the Gold Derby blog for the Los Angeles Times, decried GLAAD’s bestowing the honor on the show; last year he also called on the media watchdog group to rescind the same award. This year he was joined by Nelson Branco of The Suds Report in condemning both GLAAD and As the World Turns.

Chatting With … Sri Rao

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Sri Rao, the former head writer of last year’s best soap opera on either daytime or nighttime television, General Hospital: Night Shift. In addition to discussing his work on that gay-inclusive, critically acclaimed show, Rao also shared his thoughts on the depiction of gay characters in the genre, who should write gay characters, how As the World Turns handled the Luke and Noah storyline, as well as news about a new project very close to his heart.

AfterElton.com: You were the head writer for General Hospital: Night Shift. Had you written for soaps before that?

Sri Rao: No, this was my first foray into the soap opera genre. I had been watching General Hospital for my entire life. I’m a long-time fan of the show so I was very familiar with it.

This week we bid a fond farewell to Emmerdale’s Paul Lambert (out actor Matthew Bose) and Jonny Foster (Richard Grieve), by taking a look back at their relationship as they exit the series for a new life in Australia – oh, yeah, and to give their troubled marriage a second (or is it third?) chance. It’s been a long hard road for this couple that found their love tested time and again.

During Paul’s years living in Emmerdale, he endured a series of unsuccessful relationships and tumultuous events including the night he rescued his neighbor Grayson Sinclair (Christopher Villiers) during an assault (and somehow managing to learn of Grayson’s bisexuality in the process0. Grayson’s wife, Perdy (who is aware of her husband’s bisexuality) instantly concluded Paul and Grayson were secretly lovers, but once Paul convinced...

This week we speak with Tom Chroust, former head writer of Forbidden Love. Chroust started at the show as an intern in August 1998 and eventually became head writer at Fl from July 2007 to June 2008. (He now is part of the writing team at All That Matters.)

During Chroust's tenure as head writer at Fl he shepherded the internationally loved romance between Christian Mann (Thore Schölermann) and Olli Sabel (Jo Weil). We talked to the out writer via email about that storyline, as well as other plots and characters he enjoyed working on. We also asked him what he wished he could have done differently and lots more!

AfterElton.com: How did you come up with the love story for Christian and Olli? Was it a story that you already had in mind in general, meaning a gay love story, or for them in particular?

The premiere of SoapNet's original series General Hospital: Night Shift set records in its premiere at 11 p.m. Thursday, drawing the largest audience for any telecast in network history.

The debut episode of SoapNet's first original serialized drama averaged 1 million total viewers and 498,000 viewers in the women 18-49 demo, the network's largest audience in both total viewers and the demo. It also ranked as basic cable's No. 2 program in its time period in women 18-49.

The episode also improved over year-ago time period levels by 341% in total viewers (1 million vs. 236,000), by 482% in women 18-34 (192,000 vs. 33,000) and women 18-39 (498,000 vs. 77,000), according to Nielsen Media Research.

Meanwhile, the sixth-season premiere of The First 48 at 9 p.m. Thursday averaged 2.2 million total viewers, 1.1 million in adults 18-49 and 1.1 million in adults 25-54, which represents the show's most-watched season premiere ever.

Compared to the Season 5 premiere from January, the show was up 10% in both total viewers and 25-54.
