“Washington Black” is adapted from Esi Edugyan’s novel of the same name. The nine-episode series is set in the 19th century and follows Washington “Wash” Black (Ernest Kingsley Jr.) as he flees from a Barbados sugar plantation after a shocking death threatens to upend his life. He becomes the protégé of Medwin Harris (Sterling K. Brown), a Black refugee from Nova Scotia who serves as the de facto major of Black Halifax. While trying to outrun his past and the hunters on his tail, he meets Tanna (Lola Evans), a young wealthy British woman who passed as white but was secretly born of a Melanesian mother on the Solomon Islands, forcing her and her father to flee London for Nova Scotia. The career trajectory of Charles Martin Smith has been a fascinating one to watch. The perennial character actor (supporting roles in American Graffiti, Starman & The Untouchables) slowly transitioned behind the camera, helming such genre fare as Trick or Treat and Fifty/Fifty. Since then, Smith has transitioned to directing more topical dramas: The Snow Walker & Stone of Destiny – before finding commercial success with the family-friendly Dolphin Tale. The surprise success of Dolphin Tale, the film grossed more than 70 million domestically, has not only spawned a sequel opening this weekend but also helped to establish an aquarium (The Clearwater Marine Aquarium) that houses Winter and Hope, the titular aquatic stars of both Dolphin Tale films. In the following interview with Charles Martin Smith, the writer/director discusses the darker adult themes of Dolphin Tale 2, the writing process behind the sequel and his approach to working with child-actors. In addition, Smith...

Ashley Judd’s acting career started in Florida with Ruby in Paradise, so it was nice to see her return to the gulf for her latest film Dolphin Tale. Judd went from indie darling to hot starlet to A-lister with a penchant for thrillers, and then back to a working actress. But throughout her career, Judd has been excellent, and sadly her skills on screen are often overlooked because of her attractiveness. Judd has a reputation of being press shy, and initially she walked in and then was dragged out shortly thereafter. There was concern she was gone for good, but Judd came back and gave a thoughtful interview. We also talked briefly about her relationship with George Lucas. Check out the interview after the jump. They were in the midst of shooting, but Judd was warm and friendly. Perhaps it was her role as a mother to a child...

Love continued to linger in the air Wednesday (December 29) as Billy Boyd, best known as Pippin the hobbit in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Ali McKinnon.
Though he earned international fame and legions of fans for a quest for a different One Ring, The Evening Times reports Boyd kept the wedding very small and intimate.
Boyd and McKinnon met in 2002 at a pantomime (British winter musical comedy theater) she was appearing in. The two have a 4-year-old son, Jack, and have been living together in Glasgow's West End for several years.

Four years ago off the coast of Florida and near Cape Canavaral, a three-month-old dolphin found herself bound by a crab trap line, unable to escape. Her attempts to free herself and her growing panic at being able to do so had cut deeply into her body. Before she could succumb to her injuries, the dolphin was discovered by humans, cut free and taken to the nearby Clearwater Marine Aquarium. There veternarians assessed the dolphin's condition. She wasn't expected to survive more than 24 hours.
Fighting to save the mammal's life, doctors had to amputate the dolphin's entire tail as well as two of her vertebrae. Even after surgery the vets didn't give much hope for the animal to live long. Going from inspirational sports stories like "The Blind Side" to inspirational animal stories, Warner Bros.-based Alcon Entertainment is tapping Charles Martin Smith to write and direct "A Dolphin's Tale."
"Dolphin" is inspired by the true story of a dolphin named Winter who was rescued off the Florida coast and taken in by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
The movie version centers on a boy who befriends an injured dolphin who lost her tail in a crab trap. Through their bond and friendship, the boy motivates everyone around him to help save the dolphin by creating a prosthetic appendage to replace the dolphin's tail. The marine mammal's strong survival instincts become an inspiration to people with special needs throughout the world.
Alcon, run by co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, will finance and co-produce with Alcon marketing president Richard Ingber.
Ingber saw the story on NBC's "Today" and tracked down the rights,...

Lee Hits Out At 'Ageist' Movie Bosses
Acting legend Christopher Lee has slammed movie bosses for cutting his scenes from new film Stone Of Destiny - branding them ageist and "spineless".
The Wicker Man star shot scenes for the forthcoming movie but was disappointed to learn that his role had been scrapped, after focus groups gave a negative response to seeing an elderly gentleman on screen.
And Lee, 86, has criticised the people in charge of the picture - insisting they should not discard veteran actors.
He says, "The American distributors looked at the film and decided they didn't want me in it. These people are guided by focus groups; their ideal film-goer is apparently 18 and has an aversion to old faces.
"But what struck me as depressing was that the director, Charles Martin Smith, and his team agreed to this request. This seemed to me spineless. You would think they would have more pride in their work."...
