January and February usually aren’t the most stacked for box office performance, but there are normally some underrated hits that shine through the cracks and earn more than expected. One of the biggest surprises at the start of the year has been Becoming Led Zeppelin, the documentary detailing the rise to stardom of the classic band. Becoming Led Zeppelin earned another $740,000 during its fourth full weekend in theaters, which was enough to push the film past the $10 million global mark. Most of Becoming Led Zeppelin’s box office earnings have come from domestic markets, where it has earned $8.6 million, but it has also added $1.5 million internationally to help it reach its new total. The film was written and directed by Bernard MacMahon with Allison McGourty also earning a writing credit.

“No Other Land” is the most acclaimed film of 2024 without U.S. distribution, be it because of apprehension over embracing a story about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict or because of general concern for the documentary market theatrically.
And yet, even without a proper distributor backing it, the film has grossed just shy of $420,000 at the domestic box office. What’s more impressive — or perhaps more sad, considering the state of documentary film — is that the film is now the highest-grossing feature among the five doc features nominated at the Oscars this year.
According to data from Comscore, “Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat” (Kino Lorber) is the next highest with $320,530 cumulative as of February 25. “Porcelain War” (Picturehouse Films) came in at No. 3 with $215,826 cumulative, and No. 4 “Sugarcane” (Variance Films) has $112,251 cumulative. “Black Box Diaries” (MTV Documentary Films) had no reported numbers via Comscore but had a release on October 25, and Box Office...

Becoming Led Zeppelin has had an interesting story at the box office since it first arrived on screens the weekend before Valentine’s Day. The film grossed $2.5 million from only 369 theaters during its debut, giving it a per-theater gross of nearly $7,000, but then after expanding to more screens during its second weekend in theaters, it dropped 32% to $1.7 million despite then playing on over 1,000 screens. More recently, Becoming Led Zeppelin fell to $974,000 this weekend at the box office, and after also adding another $130,000 on Monday, February 24, the film has now safely passed $7.5 million at the domestic box office. Becoming Led Zeppelin has also earned $1.5 million internationally for a worldwide cumulative haul of $9 million.

For a second consecutive weekend, Captain America: Brave New World held onto the top spot of the box-office weekend, although this weekend’s lead of $14 million was considerably smaller than last week’s $75.5 million margin.
In its second weekend of release, Captain America: Brave New World brought in $28.2 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, giving the film a cumulative total of $141.2 million. Meanwhile, Neon saw The Monkey debut in second place with $14.2 million taken in over the weekend. After claiming second place last weekend, Sony Pictures Releasing’s Paddington in Peru fell to third place where it added $6.5 million, bringing its two-week tally to $25.3 million. Led by “Captain America: Brave New World” (Disney), the conjunction of Valentine’s Day falling on Friday and the Presidents Day weekend boosted U.S./Canada grosses to by far the best in 2025 so far. With over half ($88.5 million) of the weekend’s box office draw going to the latest Marvel release, theaters took in around $156 million. That’s 50 percent better than any weekend so far this year.
That counts as double relief for theaters. The needed strong total raises year-to-date numbers to 22 percent ahead of last year so far, and it also comes with reaffirmation that Marvel remains vital.
With its B- Cinemascore, the worst for an MCU film, as well as mostly bad reviews, there was real concern the first of three franchise releases in 2025 might fall flat. How it holds remains to be seen, but despite the headwinds it seemed to face, its gross is at or above expectations.

Becoming Led Zeppelin may have finished outside the top five at the box office this weekend, but the film still earned a per-theater total of nearly $7,000, the second-highest of any movie playing in theaters. Success for Becoming Led Zeppelin didn’t stop there, as the documentary film managed to earn more on Monday than Sunday, with its Monday haul leveling out at $300,00 after earning $297,000 on Sunday. This may be only a $3,000 difference, but earning more on the following Monday than on Sunday at the box office is almost unheard of; Becoming Led Zeppelin was the only movie on screens Monday to do so. For comparison, other movies at the top of the box office like Dog Man dropped 56% from Sunday to Monday, while Heart Eyes, Love Hurts, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Companion all dropped more than 60% from Sunday to Monday.

Universal’s “Dog Man” barked its way to the top of the U.K. and Ireland box office this weekend, debuting with a commanding £3.2 million ($4 million), according to Comscore.
The family-friendly animated adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s best-selling book series proved to be a major draw, delivering one of the biggest opening weekends of the year so far.
Last week’s leader, Disney’s “A Complete Unknown,” slid to second place, adding $1 million in its fourth weekend. The Timothée Chalamet-led Bob Dylan biopic has now reached $12.4 million. Also holding strong is Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King,” which took third place with $869,889 in its eighth weekend. The prequel has now crossed $37.6 million, cementing itself as one of the highest-grossing family films of the season.
Trafalgar Releasing’s “Macbeth: David Tennant And Cush Jumbo,” the filmed stage production of Shakespeare’s tragedy climbed to fourth place with $858,637, bringing its total to $1.9 million.

Although none of the three new arrivals failed to take the top spot from Dog Man at the box office this weekend, some performed better than others. One of the newcomers was Becoming Led Zeppelin, the musical documentary that hit limited screens this weekend before it expands into more theaters this weekend. Becoming Led Zeppelin earned $2.5 million at the box office this weekend, finishing as the eighth highest-grossing movie and beyond other new arrivals Love Hurts and Heart Eyes. However, while not reaching the same total box office heights as its competition, Becoming Led Zeppelin earned its box office total from only 369 screens, leaving it with a per-theater gross of nearly $7,000. This is more than any movie playing in theaters except Parthenope, the A24 flick that earned $31,000 from 4 screens, a $7,900 per-theater total.

Ending a five-week trend of a new film claiming the top spot of the box-office weekend, Dog Man held onto the number one position for a second consecutive weekend, albeit by only a margin of only $5.2 million.
In its second weekend of release, DreamWorks Distribution’s Dog Man remained in first place with $13.7 million. This was more than enough to best second-place finisher, Heart Eyes, which debuted in second place with $8.5 million for Sony Pictures Releasing. Meanwhile, Universal Pictures saw its Love Hurts debut in third place with $5.8 million over the weekend. Dropping a spot from last weekend, Mufasa: The Lion King landed in fourth place where it took in $3.9 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, bringing its eight-week total to $235.2 million. Despite falling from second to fifth place this weekend, Companion managed to bring in $3.02 million in its second weekend of release to lift its overall total to $15.5 million for Warner Brothers.

Super Bowl weekend is notoriously tough for cinemagoing but fans turned out and tuned in for music documentary concert film Becoming Led Zeppelin from Sony Pictures Classics, which rocked the top ten. A Complete Unknown and The Brutalist are holding. Neon saw a bump for its Parasite re-release. Documentary No Other Land had a nice expansion.
Long-gestating Becoming Led Zeppelin, an early version of which premiered at Venice in 2021, charged to more than $2.6 million on 369 Imax screens and the no. 7 spot, the only indie in the top 10 this weekend.
That’s the biggest ever opening weekend domestically for an Imax-exclusive music release. Crowds are showing love across North America with strong results from both coasts as well as markets like Toronto, Cleveland, St. Louis and Dallas.
Also from SPC, Walter Salles I’m Still Here topping $1 million in week 4 on 704 screens, a big expansion from 93 last week, and Pedro Almodovar’s...

Led Zeppelin, if you take in the full measure of their annihilating sunburst grandeur, are a very hard band to categorize. They’re usually thought of as the gods of metal, and few would deny that — though it’s my opinion that the DNA of classic metal owes as much to Black Sabbath’s second album, “Paranoid,” as it does to Zeppelin. That said, Led Zeppelin loomed like figures on Olympus over the entire cosmos of metal: the hard-charging thunder chords and blistering guitar solos, the long-haired priapic strutting, the vocals that scream out their omnipotence, the eroticized vandalism, the power.
Yet I also think of Zeppelin as the Beatles of heavy metal. There was a yin to their destructive yang — the songs they would do, like “Going to California” or “Thank You,” that conjured a vision of life as incandescent and romantic and glorious. The place where the hippie spirit still lived in them.

If it makes anyone feel better, the $55 million total box office was the best for any Super Bowl weekend since 2020. It also continues year to date improvement, besting 2024 by close to 50 percent.
“Dog Man” (Universal) repeated as #1 with $13.7 million but unexpectedly dropped 62 percent in its second weekend after a surprisingly strong opening. “Heart Eyes” (Sony) and “Love Hurts” (Universal), two new wide releases, combined managed $15 million.
The DreamWorks animated film opened about the same as “The Wild Robot,” with a similar A Cinemascore. It was unlikely that “Dog Man” would reach the $144 million “The Wild Robot” attained, but based on precedent (similar films usually triple their openings), it seemed like it could become a $100 million grosser. With its steep drop, $85 million feels more likely.
The year has seen nine non-franchise studio wide releases to date, most mid-sized or lower budgets, but only “Dog Man” and “One of Them Days” (Sony...

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s canine crime adventure “Dog Man” sniffed and scratched its way to No. 1 at the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend. Meanwhile two newcomers, Universal’s action comedy “Love Hurts” and Sony’s gory slasher “Heart Eyes,” mostly settled for scraps in this quiet Super Bowl stretch.
“Dog Man,” a family film about a police officer who becomes surgically fused to his faithful pup after getting injured on the job, collected $13.7 million from 3,887 North American theaters over the weekend. Those ticket sales, down 62% from its $36 million debut, were behind the second-weekend projections of $19 million to $22 million. So far, “Dog Man” has grossed $54.1 million domestically and $66 million globally against its $40 million budget.

Sunday Am: In a motion picture industry crunched by streaming, where studios are watching their ledgers closer than ever, Super Bowl weekend might be worth the spend to drop a tentpole trailer during the big game ($8M for 30 seconds of time this year), but it sure as hell isn’t a place to open a movie anymore.
True, more often than not, Super Bowl weekend is the frame where titles open to single digits, and studios have used the frame over and over again as a dumping ground. This year wasn’t any different.
However, studios have been able to bust through in the past with horror movies and female skewing titles. The biggest opening title ever during Super Bowl weekend remains Disney’s Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concerts back in 2008 with $31.1M. The last time a No. 1 movie crossed $30M over Super Bowl...

We’ve already gotta whole lotta love for “Becoming Led Zeppelin” — the rock documentary and concert film about one of the greatest bands ever — and that’s just based on its trailer, released Thursday.
The film itself doesn’t come out until February 7, 2025, but it could be worth the wait: Sony Pictures Classics is releasing “Becoming Led Zeppelin” exclusively into nearly 200 U.S. IMAX theaters. It will play in preview screenings across 18 markets for one night on February 5. It will then open nationwide on 1000 screens beginning February 14 (playing some Zeppelin is always a good move on Valentine’s Day).
The film, directed by Bernard MacMahon, is billed as the first “authorized” documentary on the foursome of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and the late John Bonham. It features a never-before-heard interview with Bonham about the band’s trajectory and legacy.

“Becoming Led Zeppelin,” a documentary that chronicles the origins and meteoric rise of the iconic English rock band, will play on the big screen in 2025.
Sony Picture Classics, which acquired the film earlier this year, plans to release “Becoming Led Zeppelin” only in Imax on Feb. 7. Ahead of the release on roughly 200 theaters, Imax will hold early access screenings in 18 markets on Feb. 5.
“The cinematic power of Imax paired with the film’s authentic sound creates an immersive and transportive viewing experience letting audiences feel like they are there, in the venues with the band,” the film’s director Bernard MacMahon said in a statement.
“Becoming Led Zeppelin” explores their origins with never-before-seen footage and commentary from the notoriously private band, consisting of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham. Described as a “hybrid docu-concert” movie, the doc also includes rare, unseen performances including concert halls of Led Zeppelin’s nascent tours.

The chance for the public to see the long-awaited documentary “Becoming Led Zeppelin” is finally becoming a reality for fans of the classic rock band. The film has been acquired for release by Sony Classics Pictures, and will get a big-screen theatrical rollout, the company announced Wednesday.
The rights picked up by Sony Classics are for North America, Latin America, Southeast Asia (except for Japan), the Middle East and Benelux. Negotiations for the deal took place between Sony Classics, director Bernard MacMahon and Altitude Film Sales.
No time frame was given for the film’s release, but Zeppelin fans have waited for years, so a possible matter of months may come as good news at this point. A rough version of the film premiered at and was reviewed out of the Venice Film Festival in September 2021, before it seemed to slip into limbo, as far as the general public knew.

For a band that’s now thought of as the Beatles of heavy metal, not to mention one of the four or five greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands of all time, Led Zeppelin got shockingly little critical respect back in the day. You could say that sort of thing happens a lot — in music (just look at the reverence with which Abba are now regarded; in their heyday they were often dismissed as facile creators of pop jingles) or in movies. But in the case of Led Zeppelin, there’s something uniquely telling about the vast chasm between the way they were viewed by their fans and by the gatekeepers of respectability in rock. And that helps to explain why Zep, 50 years on, still sound so raw and explosive and primal and volcanic.

“American Epic” director Bernard MacMahon has revealed the title of his long-awaited and recently completed Led Zeppelin feature documentary: “Becoming Led Zeppelin.”
The project, which was first announced in 2019, has unprecedented access to the band, marking the first and only time the group has participated in a documentary in 50 years. Though 1976 doc “The Song Remains the Same” centred on the band, that was largely a concert film of a series of Madison Square Garden performances in 1973.
“’Becoming Led Zeppelin’ is a film that no one thought could be made,” said MacMahon. “The band’s meteoric rise to stardom was swift and virtually undocumented. Through an intense search across the globe and years of restoration of the visual and audio archive found, this story is finally able to be told.”
A release date hasn’t yet been set for the pic. Altitude Film Sales and Submarine Entertainment will be co-repping sales.
