The Best Films Playing in New York and Los Angeles Repertory Theaters in April 2025
Image
Looking for a way to stay dry during the rainy month of April? What better place to cozy up than your local repertory cinema. For those based in New York and Los Angeles, the offerings over the next few weeks are some of the best of the year thus far, with multiple series being held on both coasts that put a light on some of cinema’s unsung heroes. Starting in the east, Film at Lincoln Center will be paying homage to UCLA’s L.A. Rebellion movement of the 1970s and ’80s. Revitalizing Black cinema after the market for Blaxploitation began to dwindle, this collective included filmmakers such as Charles Burnett, Julie Dash, Larry Clark, Zeinabu irene Davis, and many more.

On the west coast, not only will the Eagle at Vidiots be celebrating the late Gene Hackman with showings of two of his films, but American Cinematheque will...

Woody Harrelson's ‘Last Breath’ Crosses Major Domestic Box Office Milestone Despite a Suffocating Drop This Weekend
Image
Last Breath, the disaster thriller starring Woody Harrelson and Simu Liu, has passed another milestone at the domestic box office. Despite dropping 61% and earning only $887,000 during its fourth full weekend in theaters, Last Breath has now passed $20 million domestically. The film has yet to break into international markets and find success, currently sitting at an overseas total of only $981,000. At the time of writing, Last Breath is the 13th highest-grossing movie of the year at the domestic box office, finishing ahead of the international juggernaut Na Zhe 2 but still behind Wolf Man and Companion (Jack Quaid). It is also one of the top 50 highest-grossing movies ever for Focus Features, surpassing The Holdovers (2023) and The Eagle (2011).

Last Breath began its theatrical run with a $7.8 million opening, which was enough to make it the second-highest-grossing movie of the weekend, falling short of Captain America: Brave New World’s $14.8 million but finishing ahead of The Monkey’s $6.4 million.

‘One To One: John & Yoko’ Acquired By Magnolia Ahead Of Sundance, Sets Spring Imax Release
Image
Exclusive: Magnolia Pictures is taking North American rights to Kevin Macdonald’s documentary One to One: John & Yoko, which after making its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and playing at Telluride is making a pit stop in the Spotlight section this week at the Sundance Film Festival. One to One: John & Yoko is getting an April 11 release exclusively in Imax. Pic will air on HBO and stream on Max in late 2025.

The docu is a revelatory look at the 18 months John Lennon and Yoko Ono spent living in Greenwich Village in the early 1970s with never-before-seen material and newly restored footage of Lennon’s only full-length, post-Beatles concert. Sean Ono Lennon, the couple’s son, oversaw the audio remastering of the concert in the pic.

On August 30, 1972, in New York City, John Lennon played his only full-length show after leaving the Beatles: the One to One...

Heavy Metal Goes Medieval: Revisiting the Violent Action of ‘Ironclad’
Image
War is hell, and it’s been that way for a very long time. However, when it comes to moviemaking, many filmmakers have difficulty portraying large scale combat as anything but thrilling. This accidental glorification of collective violence is especially true when it comes to epic tales of historical warfare, with films like Braveheart and even Excalibur tending to shy away from the more horrific side of dark age violence.

And as someone who enjoys less glamorized takes on history, today I’d like to look back on Jonathan English’s underappreciated historical action film Ironclad, a 2011 flick that – while not really historically accurate – provides a disturbingly intimate view of a time when combat meant having to look your opponent in the eyes as your cleave their head in half and bathe in their fresh, steaming blood.

Funnily enough, the story of Ironclad begins during the 2008 recession, with the independent...

Spain’s Diverse Natural Landscapes and Cities, Ranging From Ancient to Ultra-Modern, Make It a Favorite Scouting Spot for International Location Managers
Image
Big Hollywood and international film and TV shoots have been held in Spain for decades, from “El Cid,” “Lawrence of Arabia” and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” to more recent standouts such as “The Crown,” “Game of Thrones,” “Venom: The Last Dance” and “Kaos.”

While filmmakers often have the final say in where their film will be shot, and producers are often concerned with the bottom line, location managers almost always serve as the icebreaker when it comes to shooting in a foreign territory. They’re the first ones to assess the viability of locations, scout the logistical viability of a country and meet with the locals that will contribute to production.

So what is it that attracts these professionals to Spain, and why do they continue recommending the country as a shooting location for their foreign shoots?

The easy answer is that it could be cheaper to...

“The Eagle: Season Two” – Review
Image
Cross-border police dramas have been popular for quite a while in Europe. “The Eagle” ran for three seasons on Danish TV in 2004-06, and counts among their solid entries in the genre. The title was the nickname accorded to Hallgrim, a first-class detective from Iceland who has distinguished himself serving in Denmark. When Season One began, he’d just been appointed to head a new unit specializing in cases involving suspects or victims from two or more countries, ideally to minimize jurisdictional restraints and complications in preventing or solving crimes. The first of eight episodes begins with a new serious crime to handle just as he’s trying to return to Iceland to spend time with his dying mother. The urgent threat preempts the personal.

The hourlong programs deal with a main case every one or two episodes, with some running threads and recurring characters loosely linking them. That makes...

Channing Tatum's Roman Epic Praised by Historian Despite Bad Reviews
Image
2011's The Eagle could have been a highlight in Channing Tatum's career but the film was a box-office disappointment. A Roman history expert revisits one scene that redeems the movie's poor reception among audiences and critics.

Sword-and-sandal films have been popular since the turn of the 19th century; the genre has also launched many actors into highly successful careers. Standout examples of these include Kirk Douglas' casting in Spartacus, Charlton Heston in Ben-Hur, and Russell Crowe in Gladiator; Troy and Alexander attempted to replicate this with Brad Pitt and Colin Farrell, but critics and audiences panned their performances. Channing Tatum received similar feedback for 2011's The Eagle, now confirmed as one of his worst-reviewed movies. Fans now have an incentive to revisit that film thanks to Insider and Michael Taylor, an expert on ancient Roman history.

Channing Tatum's Poorly-Reviewed Historical Movie Gets Near Perfect Accuracy Score From Expert
Image
Historian Michael Taylor praises The Eagle's accurate battle scene depiction and formations. The movie received poor reviews upon release due to its direction and Channing Tatum's performance. Some positive aspects include well-executed battle scenes and limited use of CGI.

Channing Tatums 2011 epic The Eagle, which received poor reviews upon release, received a near-perfect score from a historian. Directed by Scottish filmmaker Kevin Macdonald, the historical drama, which was set in 140 Ad, followed the chief protagonist Marcus Aquila, a young Roman officer who ventures into ancient Britain in hopes of recovering the lost Roman Ninth Legion's golden emblem. Tatum played the role of Marcus Aquila and was joined by other popular names, including Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland, Mark Strong, and Tahar Rahim. The movie was a critical failure, but one historian has found something positive to praise.

In a recent video by Insider, historian Michael Taylor analyzed one of...

Hugh Jackman's 10 Best Movies, Ranked
Image
Hugh Jackman is synonymous with his role as Wolverine in the X-Men films, which launched him into superstardom and made him one of the most beloved movie stars of his era. The Greatest Showman showcases Jackman's roots as a theatre performer and his vibrant, charming performance as P.T. Barnum, despite mixed reception. Logan, while considered the perfect send-off for the Wolverine character, is a gritty, mature superhero film that showcases Jackman's award-worthy and powerful performance.

Hugh Jackman is one of the most iconic movie stars of the 21st century, and some films stand out as his best work. The actor began his career in the late '90s with Australian television and theatre acting before earning international acclaim for his performance in the musical Oklahoma! and its film version. Musicals have remained a staple of Jackman's career, but he's become best known for playing Wolverine in the X-Men films,...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: January 2024
Image
Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.

Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

Here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month.

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.

First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.

We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Recent Netflix Hit Could Mean It's Time To Revisit A Genre That Died 10 Years Ago
Image
Despite its initial lack of success, the recent popularity of "The Eagle" on Netflix suggests a potential resurgence in sword and sandal movies. The success of "The Eagle" on Netflix indicates that audiences may be ready for the return of Roman and Spartan films. The upcoming sequel to "Gladiator" has the potential to fully revive interest in Roman and Spartan movies and rejuvenate the genre as a whole with improved special effects and fresh perspectives.

Despite being released in 2011, The Eagle has found some newfound and unexpected success after being added to Netflix's roster, leading many to wonder if there could be a resurgence in a long-dead movie genre. The Eagle is a historical epic movie that stars Channing Tatum as Marcus Flavius Aquila, the son of a legendary warrior, who goes on a mission to find his father and the Roman's Ninth Legion 20 years after they disappeared. The True Story Of The Eagle's Ninth Legion & How Much Of The Movie Is Real
Image
Historical dramas like The Eagle are loved by movie enthusiasts, but their accuracy is often debated due to the lack of concrete evidence from the past. Writers can get creative with possible scenarios, making it hard for modern audiences to comprehend. The disappearance of the Roman Ninth Legion, upon which The Eagle is based, is a historical mystery. Theories on their fate have varied, with some suggesting they were wiped out in Northern Britain while others have found evidence of their presence in the Netherlands. The movie takes liberties with historical facts, including the portrayal of the Roman aquila and the significance of Hadrian's Wall. The protagonist Marcus and his slave Esca are fictional characters, and the wall's purpose in reality was not as an impenetrable fortress but a checkpoint and trade route.

Historical drama The Eagle was based on a book, but it asks of how much of the...

Google Play VOD Chart Goes Awol — and Exactly How Is ‘Woody Woodpecker’ a Netflix Original?
Image
Tomorrow, “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) will make its home-viewing debut at $24.99 for rental, $29.99 for digital download, and will presumably sweep all #1 positions for weeks to come. The extent may depend on the as-yet undated PVOD arrivals of “Oppenheimer,” “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning: Part One,” and “Sound of Freedom.”

For now, our usual chart lineup is down one list: Google Play mysteriously has the same films in the same order for more than a week. In that universe, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is still #1 while “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” has yet to chart.

“Strays” Courtesy Universal Pictures

Other #1 slots reflect the ways iTunes and Vudu calculate their lists. “No Hard Feelings” (Sony), which had an early rental price reduction to $5.99 after success at $19.99, is #1 on iTunes, which calculates by transactions. Just-released R-rated comedy “Strays” (Universal) leads at Vudu, which ranks by revenue.

“No Hard Feelings” is in sixth place at Vudu,...

Image
Sunday Am Writethru: After Saturday Am update As the pandemic eases and the town questions what works on the big screen, the answers are largely family films, even if they are dated three weekends in a row. We’re talking about Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s overperformance of its 69M production The Bad Guys, which is notching a solid debut of 24M and a great A CinemaScore. Per EntTelligence, the Pierre Perifel-directed animated movie drew 2.1M admissions. Paramount’s third weekend of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is even coming up strong in second place with -48 hold, a 15.2M weekend, and tally of 145.8M by Eod Sunday.

“The very positive critical and audience reaction to The Bad Guys echoes the overperformance of our title at the domestic box office this weekend and deservedly so as this is a broad, action-packed, charming film with clever comedy for the entire family,” said...

Buffing up Bond: when it's time to send for the script doctor
As Phoebe Waller-Bridge puts a spring in Bond 25’s step, we salute the craft of Hollywood’s rewrite maestros, from Carrie Fisher to Quentin Tarantino

Script doctors are the well-remunerated but mostly unsung heroes of the film world, usually brought in to pep up lacklustre dialogue, help nail that difficult third act and generally give the movie an extra touch of class. Recruited from the ranks of established/hot writers, the gig can be seen as a lucrative payday, with little opprobrium attached if the picture is a flop and high praise if it is seen as having benefited from their input.

In the words of rewrite king Tom Mankiewicz: “It’s one of the few times when the writer has a certain control over a film, because you’re coming in when the people on the film are at their most insecure, after all, if you’re there,...

Tahar Rahim (‘The Looming Tower’) on the lesson of Hulu series: ‘If you don’t learn about history, you’re doomed to repeat it’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
“If you don’t learn about your history, you’re doomed to repeat it.” That’s one of the most important takeaways of the Hulu limited series “The Looming Tower,” according to actor Tahar Rahim. He stars as Ali Soufan, a real-life FBI agent who investigated al-Qaeda in the years leading up to the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Watch our exclusive video interview with Rahim above.

Rahim had the opportunity to meet Soufan before portraying him, and he wanted to get to know him “just like two friends, to understand more about who he is in his private life so I could bring this to the character.” He was especially impressed by Soufan’s dedication at such a young age. He was in his 20s when he joined the FBI, while Rahim remembers his own 20s as “hanging out with my friends, having fun, parties, restaurants. I was not even aware...

2017 BAFTA Nominations Spotlight The Usual Suspects; La La Land, Arrival All Up For Awards
With little over a month to go until the big night, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has unveiled the 2017 BAFTA nominations, and it’s Damien Chazelle’s La La Land that leads the charge.

Following its historic turn at last weekend’s Golden Globes ceremony – Chazelle’s old-timey musical walked away with seven wins, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor/Actress gongs for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone – La La Land continues its strong run in this year’s awards season with BAFTA nominations in all of the major categories.

For Best Film, it’ll be competing against Arrival, Manchester By the Sea and Moonlight – three formidable and worthy opponents that have collected scores of nominations between them – along with I, Daniel Blake, Ken Loach’s profound and perceptive portrayal of unemployment and its subsequent stigma in northerly England. By and large, the official BAFTA...

When Did Channing Tatum Start To Rock?
At some point Channing Tatum went from man-candy (what? It's been said) to movie star. His star rose when Step Up stole the hearts of romantic comedy lovers that had waited too long for a new dance film. Seemed like Save The Last Dance had been decades before, despite the fact it actually released only five years prior. But, let's take a look back at Channing's filmography and see exactly where Tatum became something more.

Kevin Macdonald To Direct Whitney Houston Documentary, And Amazon Sci-Fi Series 'Strange New Things'
Try as you might, you can't pin down director Kevin Macdonald. As a documentary filmmaker, he won an Oscar for "One Day In September," and has also helmed "Life In A Day" and "Marley" among others. And in features, he's bounced between true life tales ("The Last King Of Scotland"), swords and sandals epics ("The Eagle"), submarine thrillers ("Black Sea"), and political potboilers ("State Of Play"). And once again, he's got his hands in a few different pots. First up, Macdonald will be helming an officially authorized documentary about Whitney Houston. Folks who were involved with "Searching For Sugar Man" and "Amy" will be backing the project, which promises not to sugercoat the legendary singer's life, which had more than it's fair share of controversy and tabloid worthy headlines. And crucially, Clive Davis, who discovered Houston and propelled her to fame, will be part of those...

Channing Tatum
The Charming Potato and 'Kingsman 2' seem to be a match made in Heaven
Channing Tatum
The Charming Potato is joining the cast of Kingsman: The Golden Circle! I remember the moment Channing Tatum clicked for me. It certainly wasn’t on first exposure. Sometimes I see an actor and immediately like what they’re doing, and when I saw A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, it was with some early hype about both the director, Dito Montiel, and this amazing new young star, Channing Tatum. Didn’t work for me at all. He was fine in the Step Up films, but that’s because the dancing was front and center. Films like Dear John or Stop-Loss did nothing to change my opinion of Tatum, and in a few cases, like G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra or The Eagle, I thought his presence actually damaged the overall movie. For me, the first sign that he might actually be worth paying attention to was The Dilemma,...

Duncan Kenworthy talks his under-the-radar strategy for 'The Pass'
Russell Tovey and Arinzé Kene in The Pass (2016)
How the Love Actually producer guided the gay-footballers chamber piece from Royal Court sell-out to BFI Flare opening-night film.

Last night (Mar 16), The Pass opened the 30th edition of the BFI’s long-running Lgbt film festival - now called Flare - at the Odeon Leicester Square.

As well as being the first Flare opener to premiere at Odeon’s flagship cinema in 10 years, it also marked a return for Duncan Kenworthy, producer of Four Weddings And A Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually and The Eagle among others, who has premiered four films at the venue.

For Kenworthy, opening BFI Flare with The Pass was an optimal result for a film he self-funded and produced entirely under the radar, with the understanding that if it wasn’t a creative success, he could decide not to unveil it to the wider world. Fortunately, reviews for the Ben A. Williams-directed adaptation of John Donnelly’s play about gay footballers...

'Rams' Composer Atli Örvarsson Wins Best Film Score at the 2016 Harpa Awards
Icelandic cinema scored one more victory at the 2016 Harpa Awards, which took place at the Nordic Embassies during Berlinale on February 15, 2016. Composer Atli Örvarsson won the award for Best Film Score for the Icelandic film "Rams," while Johann Johannson took home the Honorary Award.

“The award for Best Film Score goes to a man with a unique sound,” said the jury who consisted of Thomas Robsahm, Konrad Sommermeyer and Christineauf der Haar. “The accordion perfectly matches the loneliness, the nature and the sound of the sheep calling out for each other - the bleating. The music, the atmosphere and the pictures fit perfectly together. It feels as if the director and the composer really are in close contact – and telling their story together.”

Grímur Hákonarson's "Rams" took home the Un Certain Regard Award at last year's Cannes Film Festival and has since screened at numerous festivals around the world charming critics and audiences alike. Cohen Media Group released the film stateside earlier this month.

Read More: 'Rams' Director Grímur Hákonarson on Icelandic Pastoral Life and Casting the Right Sheep

Atli has worked with Hans Zimmer in Los Angeles for a number of years. Since moving back to his original hometown Akureyri in northern Iceland, he has scored a number of Hollywood films and TV series as well as Icelandic films. The film "Rams" was coincidentally shot in the remote countryside village where his mother grew up and is based on a true story about two elderly brothers living on the same farm and leading a very rural countryside life - but have not spoken to each other for many decades. Atli is the son of Iceland´s most distinguished accordionist Örvar Kristánsson who passed away last year. Atli created the score to a large degree using his father’s old accordion which is heavily featured in the score.

Atli’s credits include orchestrating and writing music for some of Hollywood’s biggest projects, including the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. He has contributed music to films from "Angels and Demons" to "The Holiday. As a composer, Atli Örvarsson displays musical diversity throughout his action-film scores in "The Eagle," "Vantage Point," "Babylon A.D.," the Morgan Freeman caper "Thick as Thieves," "The Fourth Kind," and the Nicolas Cage medieval fantasy "Season of the Witch." Atli’s most recent credits include "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," the dark and edgy film "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," the drama/thriller "A Single Shot" starring Sam Rockwell, the hit NBC series "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago Pd," and working with Hans Zimmer to contribute music to the Zack Snyder's Superman reinstallment "Man of Steel."

The Harpa Awards were invented in 2009. The aim was to put a spotlight on Nordic talent, skills and know-how and to promote the great Nordic film talents in music and acting for the international film industry and thereby strengthening the opportunities for cooperation between the Nordic countries and the international film market. More information you can visit http://www.nordicfilmmusicdays.com/
