Despite dropping 61% and earning only $887,000 during its fourth full weekend in theaters, Last Breath has now passed $20 million domestically. The film has yet to break into international markets and find success, currently sitting at an overseas total of only $981,000. At the time of writing, Last Breath is the 13th highest-grossing movie of the year at the domestic box office, finishing ahead of the international juggernaut Na Zhe 2 but still behind Wolf Man and Companion (Jack Quaid). It is also one of the top 50 highest-grossing movies ever for Focus Features, surpassing The Holdovers (2023) and The Eagle (2011).

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.

First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.

We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

“Veep” star Timothy Simons and “This Is Us” actor Ron Cephas Jones have both been cast as series regulars in the upcoming Hulu limited series “Looking For Alaska,” Variety has learned.

The 8-episode series is based on the John Green novel of the same name and is told through the eyes of teenager Miles “Pudge” Halter (Charlie Plummer), as he enrolls in boarding school to try to gain a deeper perspective on life. He falls in love with a girl, Alaska Young (Kristine Froseth), and after her unexpected death, he and his close friends attempt to uncover the truth behind her death and make sense of it.

Simons has been cast in the role of ‘The Eagle,’ who is described as a stern, humorless character, devoted to the code of Culver Creek Academy. The Eagle runs the school and enjoys the power. He warns Miles against following in his father’s prankster footsteps.

French actor Tahar Rahim is in early talks to star in Damien Chazelle’s Netflix show “The Eddy,” an individual with knowledge tells TheWrap.

If cast, Rahim will be the first-announced star for the eight-episode series ordered by Netflix in 2017. Set in contemporary multi-cultural Paris, “The Eddy” is a musical drama that will center around a club, its owner, the house band, and the chaotic city that surrounds them.

Chazelle (“La La Land”) is serving as executive producer and will direct the first two episodes of the series. It’s being written by Jack Thorne and will feature dialogue in French, English and Arabic. Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Glen Ballard will compose the original music.

Some classic comedies will also become available in September, like the original “Ghostbusters,” “Jerry Maguire,” and “Smokey and the Bandit.” In more of a dramatic mood as the weather shifts? Dramas like “Sleepless in Seattle” starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan should do the trick.

Last step before the Oscars! The top actors, directors, writers, and producers from all over the world gathered in London on Sunday night for the 2017 British Academy of Film and Television Awards.

With little over a month to go until the big night, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts has unveiled the 2017 BAFTA nominations, and it’s Damien Chazelle’s La La Land that leads the charge.

Following its historic turn at last weekend’s Golden Globes ceremony – Chazelle’s old-timey musical walked away with seven wins, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor/Actress gongs for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone – La La Land continues its strong run in this year’s awards season with BAFTA nominations in all of the major categories.

How the Love Actually producer guided the gay-footballers chamber piece from Royal Court sell-out to BFI Flare opening-night film.

Last night (Mar 16), The Pass opened the 30th edition of the BFI’s long-running Lgbt film festival - now called Flare - at the Odeon Leicester Square.

As well as being the first Flare opener to premiere at Odeon’s flagship cinema in 10 years, it also marked a return for Duncan Kenworthy, producer of Four Weddings And A Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually and The Eagle among others, who has premiered four films at the venue.

For Kenworthy, opening BFI Flare with The Pass was an optimal result for a film he self-funded and produced entirely under the radar, with the understanding that if it wasn’t a creative success, he could decide not to unveil it to the wider world. Icelandic cinema scored one more victory at the 2016 Harpa Awards, which took place at the Nordic Embassies during Berlinale on February 15, 2016. Composer Atli Örvarsson won the award for Best Film Score for the Icelandic film "Rams," while Johann Johannson took home the Honorary Award.

“The award for Best Film Score goes to a man with a unique sound,” said the jury who consisted of Thomas Robsahm, Konrad Sommermeyer and Christineauf der Haar. “The accordion perfectly matches the loneliness, the nature and the sound of the sheep calling out for each other - the bleating. The music, the atmosphere and the pictures fit perfectly together. It feels as if the director and the composer really are in close contact – and telling their story together.”

Grímur Hákonarson's "Rams" took home the Un Certain Regard Award at last year's Cannes Film Festival and has since screened at numerous festivals around the world charming critics and audiences alike. Cohen Media Group released the film stateside earlier this month.

Atli has worked with Hans Zimmer in Los Angeles for a number of years. Since moving back to his original hometown Akureyri in northern Iceland, he has scored a number of Hollywood films and TV series as well as Icelandic films. The film "Rams" was coincidentally shot in the remote countryside village where his mother grew up and is based on a true story about two elderly brothers living on the same farm and leading a very rural countryside life - but have not spoken to each other for many decades. Atli is the son of Iceland´s most distinguished accordionist Örvar Kristánsson who passed away last year. Atli created the score to a large degree using his father’s old accordion which is heavily featured in the score.

Atli’s credits include orchestrating and writing music for some of Hollywood’s biggest projects, including the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. He has contributed music to films from "Angels and Demons" to "The Holiday. As a composer, Atli Örvarsson displays musical diversity throughout his action-film scores in "The Eagle," "Vantage Point," "Babylon A.D.," the Morgan Freeman caper "Thick as Thieves," "The Fourth Kind," and the Nicolas Cage medieval fantasy "Season of the Witch." Atli’s most recent credits include "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," the dark and edgy film "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," the drama/thriller "A Single Shot" starring Sam Rockwell, the hit NBC series "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago Pd," and working with Hans Zimmer to contribute music to the Zack Snyder's Superman reinstallment "Man of Steel."

While Batman Vs Superman, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men Apocalypse and other mega franchises are expected to dominate cinemas in 2016, let’s hear it for the films below. None are sequels, few have titanic budgets, all of them are British and each of them has the potential to be great.

2016 looks to be a particularly strong year for UK crime drama, with Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire, Adam Smith’s Trespass Against Us and Michael Apted’s Unlocked on their way.
