David Lynch's seminal film Blue Velvet was a nightmarish and surreal story that exemplified the 1980s, but its ending left a lot of questions. Released in 1986, Blue Velvet was Lynch's return to form after the misstep that was the 1984 adaptation of Dune. The film held up an eerie mirror of small town America and showed the seedy underbelly that writhed beneath. Although it was a bit of a box office failure, grossing only 8.5 million (via Box Office Mojo), it was positively received by critics and even earned David Lynch his second Best Director Oscar nomination.

Unlike Lynch's other films that delved entirely into the surreal, Blue Velvet was still very much a mystery story that was interspersed with the director's signature brand of otherworldly vision. Ti West's "Pearl," a prequel to his subversive slasher "X," is one of the best horror movies in recent years. Mia Goth's spellbinding performance as a lonely, sadistic farmer's daughter with big dreams carries the film. Both "Pearl" and "X," as well as the upcoming third film in the trilogy, "MaXXXine," honor the film and pornography industries and study the allure of stardom through a celluloid aesthetic that captures a particular era in cinema history.

"X" was Ti West's homage to the schlocky 1970s grindhouse movies and the available snippet of "MaXXXine" seems to capture the grainy VHS artificiality of the 1980s. "Pearl," meanwhile, is like looking at classic Hollywood through a funhouse mirror. Ti West tells Filmmaker Magazine that he used the same dazzling Technicolor palette as "The Wizard of Oz." These striking colors are a visual expression of Pearl's romantic fantasies yet they feel uncanny as if something sinister lurks beneath.

Neil Young’s Official Bootleg Series is expanding with the releases of Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (Los Angeles 2/1/71), Royce Hall (Los Angeles 1/30/71), and Citizen Kane Jr. Blues (Live The Bottom Line) (New York City 5/16/74). Netflix in Spain has kicked off production on “Rainbow,” a new feature film from celebrated film and TV multi-hyphenate Paco León. Inspired by “The Wizard of Oz,” the film will heavily feature important aspects of contemporary culture such as dance, fashion, plastic arts and above all, music.

Netflix has teamed with Mediaset España’s Telecinco Cinema, the powerful feature film production arm of Spanish broadcaster Telecinco, to produce the new film, which his currently shooting in Madrid. The film will track the journey of a modern-day Dorothy teenage girl who embarks on a journey of her own.

According to León, he is “dead scared and hugely excited to see how this film, written during quarantine, comes out as I believe it is a step forward in my career as a director.”

The UK government is introducing a series of points-based immigration reforms that it says will make it easier and faster for people who have won various arts awards to receive a visa to live and work in the country.

Anyone who has won a specific category at the Oscars, BAFTAs or Golden Globes, such as the BAFTA best film prize, as well as a series of other awards from various disciplines, can as of Wednesday go via a fast-track system that allows them to make a single visa application. This replaces the previous ‘Global Talent’ system that required an endorsement from one of six qualifying bodies.

Linda Manz, best known for her role as “Peewee” in the film The Wanderers and appearances in Terrence Malick’s Days of Heaven and Dennis Hopper’s Out of the Blue, died Friday at age 58, according to her son, Michael Guthrie.

Guthrie started a GoFundMe page which said Manz died from lung cancer and pneumonia.

“She leaves behind a husband, two sons, and three grandchildren who all love and miss her tremendously,” Guthrie posted on the page. “Linda was a loving wife, a caring mom, a wonderful grandma, and a great friend who was loved by many. Thank you and God bless. Rest in peace. We love you, Mom.”

Ken Wahl remembered Manz in a Facebook post. They costarred in the 1979 The Wanderers.

Linda Manz, an actor known for her roles in Terrence Malick’s “Days of Heaven” and Dennis Hopper’s “Out of the Blue,” died on Friday. She was 58.

Her son, Michael Guthrie, started a GoFundMe fundraiser which announced that she had died after struggling with lung cancer and pneumonia.

“Linda passed away August 14 after battling with lung cancer and pneumonia. She leaves behind a husband, two sons and three grand-children who all love and miss her tremendously. Linda was a loving wife, a caring mom, a wonderful grandma and a great friend who was loved by many,” Guthrie wrote. “Thank you and God bless. Rest in peace. We love you, Mom.”

HBO received nine SAG Awards nominations Wednesday morning; meanwhile, Warner Bros. Disney-Fox’s “Ford v Ferrari,” starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon, is heading for a North American launch in the $23 million to $27 million range, early estimates showed Thursday.

Yesterday the 2017 Into Film Awards brought together some of the brightest new young filmmakers in the UK to celebrate their achievements, and promote the ongoing commitment to teaching film in schools. Many of the young filmmakers walked the red carpet before the ceremony, rubbing shoulders with some of our finest actors, directors and producers, and we were able to speak to many of them.

Eddie Redmayne, Daniel Craig, Amma Asante and Charles Dance were among those attending the event, and our collection of interviews are below. The great work Into Film undertakes to promote film education is second to none. Supported by the BFI and the National Lottery there is much to celebrate here, and we wish them well on their continuing adventure.

Irish actress Jenn Murray will have a "key role" in the Harry Potter spinoff, according to The Wrap.

Jk Rowling has written the script, expanding her Potter universe, with director David Yates returning to the series.

Eddie Redmayne will play the lead Newt Scamander, a magical zoologist on an adventure in New York.

Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol have been cast as sisters alongside Ezra Miller and Dan Fogler.

Murray will apparently appear in scenes with Miller, who is expected to be Scamander's rival.

The actress has previously starred in Dorothy Mills alongside Carice van Houten, while she has upcoming roles in Love and Friendship opposite Chloe Sevigny and Stephen Fry, and Brooklyn with Saoirse Ronan. She also appeared in BBC dramas Truckers and The Fades.

Tribeca 2011 marks the world premier of Agnès Merlet's (Dorothy Mills) intriguing looking teen drama about living with powers beyond your control. It sort of reminds me of a kitchen sink Heroes, though I doubt the characters in Merlet's film band together to fight any super villains.

Ten-year-old James Furlong's father was able to shut off all electricity around him when he was scared, and his grandfather went temporarily blind when he thought about sex. 'The Last Furlong' a France-Ireland co-production is set to start shooting in March 2010. The film which centres on a love between two teenagers will be shot around Dublin. The feature is written by Nick Murphy (The Running Mate) and will be directed by Agnes Merlet (Dorothy Mills). 'Sunshower', a 13 minute short film by Irish writer/director Liam Gavin, has been selected for competition for the 2009 Raindance Film Festival. Shot in the Dublin Mountains in January 2009, 'Sunshower' was produced by Maggie Mitchell of Samson Films and was funded by the Filmbase/Rte short film scheme. The short stars Jenn Murray (Dorothy Mills, Day of the Triffids) and Ifta winning actor Brendan Conroy (Kings), and depicts a somewhat frightening but ultimately redemptive encounter between a teenage girl and an old man, after she knocks him down with a stolen car in the middle of the countryside.

We got an exclusive inside tip this morning that both Eddie Redmayne and Carice Van Houten (Dorothy Mills, Repossession Mambo) have been cast alongside Sean Bean in Christopher Smith's (Creep, Severance) latest horror pic Black Death. Medieval England has fallen under the shadow of The Black Death. In this apocalyptic world, filled with fear and superstition, a young monk called Osmund is charged with leading a fearsome knight, Ulric (Sean Bean) and his group of mercenaries to a remote marsh. Their quest is to hunt down a necromancer - someone able to bring the dead back to life. Torn between his love of God and the love of a young woman, Osmund discovers the necromancer, a mysterious beauty called Langiva. After Langiva reveals her Satanic identity and offers Osmund his heart's desire, the horror of his real journey begins.

Directed by Agnès Merlet from a script she wrote with Juliette Sale, Dorothy Mills is about a psychiatrist (Carice van Houten) who travels to an island off the coast of Ireland to investigate the titular teenaged girl (Jenn Murray), who is accused of trying to kill a baby. What she finds are hostility from some of the locals and a frightening secret surrounding Dorothy. The DVD, which includes a making-of featurette, retails for $19.98 and can be pre-ordered here.

This is easily one of the best weeks for DVD releases we've seen in a long while in fact, as I write this, I realize that this post almost works to recap of a lot of the high points of last years cinematic offerings. So, I suggest you grab a coffee and take a few minutes to just digest all the great titles, read some of our past reviews, and look at some trailers before you take a trip through any of the amazon links and start browsing.

• The Weinstein Company did some shopping over at the American Film Market this past weekend picking up domestic rights to three titles under the Wild Bunch umbrella. Pascal Laugier's horror flick entitled Martyrs, Agnes Merlet's Dorothy Mills (starring Carice Van Houten) and the highly anticipated Marc Coro's first solo directing effort in the sci-fi film Dante 01.  With the the three new French titles, the Weinsteins have a healthy mix of genre-specific, foreign productions for their 2008 line up with Fanboys and My Blueberry Nights the first titles to be released.   ...
