Disney’s hotly anticipated Snow White is finally here, but did critics love it? To divert attention from the many controversies incited by lead actress Rachel Zegler’s outspoken stance, the House of Mouse desperately seeks favorable reviews to woo audiences.

Unfortunately for Disney, when it confidently lifted the review embargo on Wednesday, expecting a positive critical reception, the results were quite the contrary. Snow White has manifested a milquetoast response, with even its positive reviews ceasing well short of calling it a masterpiece.

Snow White holds a 48% “rotten” score on the namesake site after 83 critics weighed in, its aggregated score stranded at 5.5/10. While not abysmal, this number falls below Disney’s recent middling releases, including Moana 2 (61%) and Mufasa: The Lion King (57%). Over on Metacritic, Snow White sits at an equally unimpressive 46.

With all the turmoil besetting the real world, you’d think there might be more important things to inflate into controversies than the pre-release kerfuffles that have plagued “Snow White.” As it turns out, this is one of the better live-action adaptations of a Disney animated feature. And I say that as someone who mostly doesn’t like them. Yes, I’ve enjoyed a couple. At heart, though, I still don’t truly get the idea of Disney strip-mining its animated IP — and doing so not because there’s anything inherently appealing about turning painterly fairy-tale cartoons into stilted, less sublime real-life versions of themselves. All that said, the chirpy, vivacious, just-romantic-enough-to-get-by “Snow White” proves to be an exception to the rule.

Disney’s live-action “Snow White” remake has finally been unveiled at the movie’s Hollywood premiere, and first reactions are trickling in calling it a dazzling hit for the House of Mouse.

Variety film reporter Katcy Stephan praised star Rachel Zegler as “a shining supernova,” adding that the film is a “visual feast with show-stopping new musical numbers and, of course, dozens of enchanting animated animals. The screenplay wisely gives its heroine newfound depth through her fervent desire to become the leader her father believed she could be, and a love story that’s sweet as apple pie.”

Online critic Christopher Rates It wrote of the film, “‘Snow White’ is not only one of their best live-action remakes in years, but it’s also a film that recaptures the magic of the 1937 movie. Rachel Zegler Is Snow White, and she delivers such a magical performance.”

The South Korean box office saw a major shake-up this weekend with the arrival of “Captain America: Brave New World,” which took a commanding lead in its debut. The Marvel film dominated with a massive market share, pushing holdover “Hitman 2” down the rankings.

“Captain America: Brave New World” opened with KRW5.91 billion ($4 million), accounting for 62.2% of the total market share. The superhero epic attracted 583,851 viewers in its opening weekend, amassing a cumulative total of $5.5 million, according to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council.

Musical romance “Secret: Untold Melody” stayed at second place with $543,509, taking 8.3% of the market share. The film declined 42.2% from last weekend and drew 78,241 viewers, bringing its cumulative total to $4.7 million.

“Hitman 2” slid to third place with $461,619, making up 7% of the weekend market. The action-comedy sequel has now grossed $16 million.

Rom-coms have been no small piece of director Mark Waters’s career. He’s the man behind films including “Just Like Heaven” and “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” he produced “500 Days of Summer,” and more.

But, even with a new rom-com out on Netflix this week, if you ask Waters himself, he wouldn’t necessarily tout himself as a king in the genre.

“I think I’m the person who’s responsible for killing people’s rom-com career,” Waters joked with TheWrap. “Because I know that Mark Ruffalo, after [‘Just Like Heaven’], I don’t think he did another rom-com. “Notting Hill” screenwriter Richard Curtis is detailing why there hasn’t been a sequel: And it turns out Julia Roberts part of the reason why.

Curtis told IndieWire while promoting his upcoming Netflix animated film “That Christmas,” which premieres December 4, that he wanted to do a “mini sequel” to the beloved 1999 rom-com as part of Red Nose Day. However, Roberts had issues with the script idea, which involved her A-list actress character Anna Scott divorcing bookstore owner William Thacker, played by Curtis’ longtime collaborator Hugh Grant.

Curtis previously has reunited the cast of his feature “Love Actually” for short film follow-ups that benefit the annual charity event.

When asked if Curtis would want to revisit any of his past films in a formal feature sequel form, he said, “I don’t think so. I actually did four Red Nose Days and Comic Relief. We did those mini sequels to ‘Love Actually’ and those satisfied me.
