Italy’s Leone Film Group and Rai Cinema jointly acquired “Day Drinker” from Lionsgate.

Materialists Worldwide Box Office: Chris Evans & Dakota Johnson’s Rom-Com Nears $50M
Image
Materialists Worldwide Box Office (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Materialists marks the beginning of a bold run for distributor A24, a company which is aiming to step into the bigger game this year. The romantic drama, packed with star power like Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, has managed a solid theatrical performance so far.

While the genre hasn’t exactly seen a consistent streak lately, this one is holding its ground and climbing steadily. It’s already on track to surpass Celine Song’s Past Lives and should easily wrap up with more than $50 million worldwide.

The New York based entertainment company has already tasted success. Last year, titles like Heretic, Babygirl, and We Live in Time each crossed the $60 million mark, but Materialists stands apart. The movie has only a production budget of $20m, but its success story will lay down tracks for bigger titles like The Smashing Machine...

Dakota Johnson’s New Rom-Com Overtakes Chris Evans’ Forgotten 73% Rotten Tomatoes Drama at the Global Box Office
Image
The first in a string of movies this year that the distributor A24 hopes will elevate it into the big leagues, Materialists certainly had the star-power to compete with the best of them. The romantic drama is headlined by Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, and has had a rather solid theatrical run so far, especially considering how uneven the response to the genre has been lately. Materialists is on track to overtake director Celine Song’s breakout movie, Past Lives, and should comfortably conclude its run with over $50 million worldwide.

Just last year, a trio of A24 titles — Heretic, Babygirl, and We Live in Time — had excellent runs at the box office, grossing around $60 million each. But Materialists is a different beast; it cost a reported $20 million to produce, and is setting the stage for bigger A24 titles such as The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne Johnson, and Marty Supreme,...

Amanda Seyfried Reveals Plans for ‘Jennifer’s Body 2’ With Resurrected Megan Fox, Pitches Adam Brody to Play the Devil
Image
Is “Jennifer’s Body” ready to come off the ice?

The cult horror film starring Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried and Adam Brody is nearing its 20th anniversary, but sequel talk has moved at a steady clip in the years following its 2009 release. Seyfried and Brody, in contention for Emmy nominations this year, recently reunited for a roving “Actors on Actors” conversation where Variety got important updates on the second film.

“We’re making another one,” Seyfried told Brody definitively during their chat.

“I heard, what can you tell me?” he asked in return.

In the original movie, “Mamma Mia!” star Seyfried played Anita “Needy” Lesnicki, the wallflower best friend of bad girl Fox (the titular Jennifer). Brody played Nikolai, lead singer of the aspiring rock band Low Shoulder. When the girls head to a local dive bar to see them play, Brody’s character reveals bigger plans for his groupie...

Image
After building his career on dramatic roles and as Marvel’s Loki, Tim Hiddleston is trying out a new title in his upcoming movie The Life of Chuck: dancer.

The film, which won the audience award at TIFF last year, is adapted from a Stephen King novella and follows three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz (played in part by Hiddleston) whose death coincides with the end of the world. Along the way, it also features plenty of dancing from the actor.

’Netflix’s Answer to ‘Yellowstone’ Falls Off of Streaming Charts as Fans Await Season 2 News
Image
It’s now been over a month since the first season of Ransom Canyon premiered in its entirety on Netflix. The series spent the better part of the last month in the Netflix top 10, but fans have still not been gifted the Season 2 renewal that they’ve been waiting for. Enough time has now passed that Ransom Canyon has slipped out of the Netflix top 10. Despite cast members giving updates on what they’d like to see in a second season, Netflix has stayed eerily quiet on the Ransom Canyon renewal front. The show, which has been dubbed as Netflix’s version of Yellowstone, is a romance-fueled family drama following three intersecting ranching families. It’s set against the sweeping tundras and beautiful landscapes of Texas Hill Country.

Starring in the lead role of Staten Kirkland in Ransom Canyon is Josh Duhamel. Duhamel is also known for his role as...

Looking for great rom-com movies? Here’s the streamer that should be first on your list
Image
From ‘Say Anything’ to ‘Palm Springs,’ Hulu nail every era of the rom-com.

Rom-coms are my favorite genre because when they really work, they deliver one of the best story experiences. Put simply, they both make me laugh and move me emotionally. Now, I’m not talking about the made-for-tv kind with generic meet-cutes and soft lighting, but the real deal: big-screen, laugh-out-loud, emotionally layered stories that actually stick with you.

So I started digging across the streamers, looking for the good ones. And while it’s obviously subjective, the best collection I found was on Hulu. Not the most rom-coms, but the right ones for me — a killer mix of 2000s nostalgia, indie hits, and buzzy modern entries that all hit that sweet spot. Here’s why Hulu is the best streamer for rom-com lovers who want quality, not quantity.

Everything you need to know about the best streamer for rom-com movies.

Emily Deschanel's Sister Zooey Guest Starred In One Of The Best Bones Episodes
Image
For a show that featured a lot of death, "Bones" sure did have a lot of heart. A series doesn't run for 12 seasons without an effective emotional core, after all, and "Bones" certainly managed to maintain a soft spot, even as Emily Deschanel's Temperance Brennan and David Boreanaz's Agent Seeley Booth inspected some of the most horrific corpses you've ever seen on TV.

One nice behind-the-scenes aspect of the series to offset the ongoing corpse inspections was the fact that the "Bones" cast often included family members of the stars and the show's creator, Hart Hanson. David Boreanaz's father, Dave Roberts, appeared in an uncredited cameo as an FBI agent, while Hanson's own father, Paul, showed up as a vending machine repairman. But it was during one Christmas episode that we got perhaps the most notable family-member appearance in the series.

Yes, even "Bones," with fake cadavers...

The Ballad of Wallis Island Review: The Bittersweet Movie Is Painfully Deep
Image
Directed by James Griffiths, written by and starring Tom Basden and Tim Key, and featuring Carey Mulligan, Akemnji Ndifornyen and Sian Clifford, the British indie film The Ballad of Wallis Island seems poised to be the best romantic comedy of 2025. But this is not a romantic comedy. This tale of love, loss, nostalgia, grief and acceptance is set to an acoustic indie folk-revival soundtrack. Equal parts drama, buddy comedy and musical, The Ballad of Wallis Island is a bittersweet yet poignant meditation about the power of nostalgia and the importance of acceptance.

Charles (Tim Key) is a bereaved widower and deeply eccentric soul whose good fortune at the lottery led him to own a mansion on the secluded Wallis Island in Great Britain. Five years after the passing of his wife, Charles wants nothing more than to listen to his and his wife's favorite indie folk duo, McGwyer and Mortimer,...

Back when New Girl first aired in 2011, we as audiences were introduced to Zooey Deschanel’s eccentric teacher Jessica Day, who moved into an apartment loft with three single men, following her bad breakup.

And in the aftermath of her relocation, it was the unexpected events and the roommates/dysfunctional family dynamics that turned the sitcom into a major hit.

Image
Disney is no stranger to controversies. Since its creation, and release of its first animated film, 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the studio has become of the biggest names in the film industry, and its continuous changes have often come with pushback from audiences.

Throughout its long run, Disney has taken good and bad decisions with its big franchises. A huge conglomerate, the studio owns some of the biggest titles of all time, and has set itself apart as one of the highest-grossing studios. Its latest project is a live-action version of Snow White, which has been hit with controversy and bad reviews, but the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes following its Mar. 21 release tells a different, more enchanting story.

Rachel Zegler Snow White Review (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Disney’s hotly anticipated Snow White is finally here, but did critics love it? To divert attention from the many controversies incited by lead actress Rachel Zegler’s outspoken stance, the House of Mouse desperately seeks favorable reviews to woo audiences.

Unfortunately for Disney, when it confidently lifted the review embargo on Wednesday, expecting a positive critical reception, the results were quite the contrary. Snow White has manifested a milquetoast response, with even its positive reviews ceasing well short of calling it a masterpiece.

Snow White holds a 48% “rotten” score on the namesake site after 83 critics weighed in, its aggregated score stranded at 5.5/10. While not abysmal, this number falls below Disney’s recent middling releases, including Moana 2 (61%) and Mufasa: The Lion King (57%). Over on Metacritic, Snow White sits at an equally unimpressive 46.

‘Snow White’ reviews better than expected after controversies: ‘Spirit and sweet’ with a standout Rachel Zegler performance

Disney’s embattled live-action version of Snow White isn’t necessarily the fairest of them all, but its reviews aren’t as outright negative as the prerelease buzz might have indicated.

“As it turns out, this is one of the better live-action adaptations of a Disney animated feature,” Variety critic Owen Gleiberman wrote on Wednesday as the film’s review embargo lifted, a sentiment shared by many — but not most — critics.

Directed by Marc Webb, the new version of Snow White has been central to several controversies and outrage cycles over the last several years — from a racist backlash to casting Rachel Zegler, who is of Colombian descent, in the title role to grievances from Disney fans over Zegler’s comments about the 1937 animated classic’s retrograde view of women. The project unwittingly became entangled with geopolitics as well. Zegler and costar Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen, stand...

‘Snow White’ Review: Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot Face Off in One of the Better Live-Action Disney Remakes. And Yes, the Controversies Are Bupkes
Image
With all the turmoil besetting the real world, you’d think there might be more important things to inflate into controversies than the pre-release kerfuffles that have plagued “Snow White.” As it turns out, this is one of the better live-action adaptations of a Disney animated feature. And I say that as someone who mostly doesn’t like them. Yes, I’ve enjoyed a couple. At heart, though, I still don’t truly get the idea of Disney strip-mining its animated IP — and doing so not because there’s anything inherently appealing about turning painterly fairy-tale cartoons into stilted, less sublime real-life versions of themselves. What the remakes are selling is the theme-park novelty of the transformation: Look, here’s what an animated classic looks like when it’s retrofitted with sets and actors!

All that said, the chirpy, vivacious, just-romantic-enough-to-get-by “Snow White” proves to be an exception to the rule.

'Snow White' Review: Rachel Zegler Proves Haters Wrong
Image
Disney's live-action adaption of Snow White arrives on the silver screen after years of production controversies and significant blowback to star Rachel Zegler's political rhetoric. Snow White stays mostly true to the classic cartoon's beloved narrative with enchanting performances, fantastic musical numbers, and just enough darkness to soften the sweet sentiments. Hearts will swell as a magnificent fable champions the virtues of kindness and community over greed and villainy. Snow White is far from the "woke" disaster certain audiences have predicted, and perhaps hoped for, since the trailer's release.

Adorable CGI critters open a storybook that explains how a baby girl was born to the King (Hadley Fraser) and Queen (Lorena Andrea) during a ferocious blizzard. They named their daughter Snow White (young Emilia Faucher) and instilled in her a love for the Kingdom, its people, and nature's bounty, but their treasured family's happiness didn't last long. The heartbroken...

‘Snow White’ Is Like Being Stuck in the Most Controversial Disney-Adult Nightmare Ever
Image
If every movie is also a documentary of the moment in which it’s made — big up the French filmmaker behind that quote — it’s way more interesting to think of this new, live-action Snow White as a time capsule for our through-the-looking-glass moment than as a fresh take on a Disney staple. Thanks to comic strips, theatrical productions, and several early attempts to adapt this fairy tale for the screen (including the 1916 version a teen Walt Disney saw in Kansas City, Missouri, which had a formative impact on his...

Sound And Vision: Marc Webb
Image
In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week, five music videos that Marc Webb made that feel like precursors for his new adaptation of Snow White. As a music video director Marc Webb specialized in videos for nu-metal, pop punk and emo acts. A lot of these videos, like the genres of music themselves, scan as achingly sincere, bordering on the silly. It is in a lot of the films Webb made ever since that this balance between the silly and the sincere gets pushed into the extreme. The rebound romance for the protagonist of 500 Days of Summer having the name Autumn is such a groan worthy moment. And while there is a...

‘Snow White’ First Reactions Praise Film as a ‘Visual Feast’ and One of Disney’s ‘Best Live-Action Remakes in Years’
Image
Disney’s live-action “Snow White” remake has finally been unveiled at the movie’s Hollywood premiere, and first reactions are trickling in calling it a dazzling hit for the House of Mouse.

Variety film reporter Katcy Stephan praised star Rachel Zegler as “a shining supernova,” adding that the film is a “visual feast with show-stopping new musical numbers and, of course, dozens of enchanting animated animals. The screenplay wisely gives its heroine newfound depth through her fervent desire to become the leader her father believed she could be, and a love story that’s sweet as apple pie.”

Online critic Christopher Rates It wrote of the film, “‘Snow White’ is not only one of their best live-action remakes in years, but it’s also a film that recaptures the magic of the 1937 movie. Rachel Zegler Is Snow White, and she delivers such a magical performance.”

Filmhounds editor Paul Klein echoed the praise with one caveat,...

Snow White's Controversies Continue as Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler 'Have Nothing in Common'
Image
The upcoming live-action remake of Snow White is not Disney's first venture into the world of remakes, but it's certainly one of its most controversial projects. With several other successful attempts, like 2015's Cinderella and 2017's Beauty and the Beast, the fairest of them all is not quite as popular.

The upcoming Disney film stars West Side Story's Rachel Zegler as the titular character and Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Zegler's casting has led to a wave of backlash, as her mother has Columbian descendants, and the character is described as fair-skinned. With the premiere getting closer, an insider claimed the "tensions" are getting higher between the two co-stars, telling People that Gadot and Zegler have "nothing in common."

The two actresses might have a huge age gap, but that hasn't stopped other actors. Press tours are vital in the promotion of a film, which...

Although Hayao Miyazaki may be the world's leading figure in Japanese anime films, thanks to his widely recognized and beloved work from Studio Ghibli, other anime directors such as Makoto Shinkai have gained more and more recognition from Western audiences within the last decade. Despite being unfairly overlooked by the Academy, Shinkai’s 2016 film Your Name has been considered to be one of the best animated films of the century, ranking at number 83 on IMDb’s Top 250. It's a visual and thematic masterpiece of animation, which is why it’s so shocking that J.J. Abrams is currently feeling the need to remake it in live-action for American audiences. Abrams has accomplished quite a bit throughout his career as a producer and director,...

‘La Dolce Villa’ Director Mark Waters Talks ‘Killing People’s Rom-Com Careers’ and ‘Freakier Friday’
Image
Rom-coms have been no small piece of director Mark Waters’s career. He’s the man behind films including “Just Like Heaven” and “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” he produced “500 Days of Summer,” and more.

But, even with a new rom-com out on Netflix this week, if you ask Waters himself, he wouldn’t necessarily tout himself as a king in the genre.

“I think I’m the person who’s responsible for killing people’s rom-com career,” Waters joked with TheWrap. “Because I know that Mark Ruffalo, after [‘Just Like Heaven’], I don’t think he did another rom-com. And after ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,’ I think Matthew McConaughey never did another one.”

In fairness, that’s because both actors went on to star in much heavier fare, intentionally so. And Waters knows that, saying that “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” was a “bridging” role for McConaughey, as the character...

What Happened To Caroline Julian Actress Patricia Belcher After Bones?
Image
"Bones" was led by David Boreanez and Emily Deschanel as FBI agent Seeley Booth and forensic anthropologist Temperance "Bones" Brennan, respectively. But while this duo were the core of the series, no TV show can last a full 12 seasons without some support from other cast members. In the case of "Bones," the Fox procedural was undergirded by a wide array of supporting characters and guest stars who helped to give the series its enduring appeal. Alongside the team of "squints" at the fictional Jeffersonian Institute Medico-Legal Lab — the idea for which was brought to the show by a real detective — there was an array of guest stars who helped expand the "Bones" universe, many of whom became fan-favorites.

Just take Patricia Belcher, who played U.S. Attorney's office federal prosecutor Caroline Julian. She remains the only "Bones" guest star to appear in every season of the series from 2005-2017. First...

The 12 Best Movies To Watch If You Like 500 Days Of Summer
Image
The acclaimed 2009 comedy "500 Days of Summer," memorably starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, is widely considered a love story, despite the movie explicitly denying this association. As its lead actors maintain, the film is more of a coming-of-age tale than a conventional romance, with its protagonist confronting the truth about the nature of love. For those who enjoy the movie's quirky sense of humor, eclectic soundtrack, and refreshingly grounded and related performances, there are several thematically similar films. While some of these comparable movies are outright romantic comedies, what really links them to "500 Days of Summer" are their young adult coming-of-age sensibilities.

This isn't to say that these movies are directly inspired by "500 Days of Summer" either; several on this list were released years before. What these movies have in common is a wry, often self-aware and dialogue-driven sense of humor, with the story anchored by two likable leads.

‘Snow White’ Trailer: Rachel Zegler Meets the Seven Dwarfs, Defies the Evil Queen and Showcases Her Singing
Image
The new trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of “Snow White” has officially released, showcasing more of Rachel Zegler’s vocals, the seven dwarfs and Gal Gadot’s villainous turn as the evil queen.

The film is directed by Marc Webb and is the latest Disney remake. Following the 1937 animated classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” this newest iteration of the story follows Snow White after the jealous wicked queen, who also happens to be her mother, orders her murder. Snow White runs away into a forest and discovers the magic of the seven dwarfs in a cottage.

After her film breakout in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” Zegler returns to sing her heart out on the big screen. Gadot stars as the evil queen alongside Andrew Burnap, Martin Klebba and Ansu Kabia. The screenplay is written by Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”) and Erin Cressida Wilson (“The Girl on the Train...

Julia Roberts Turned Down a ‘Notting Hill’ Reunion Due to a Divorce Plot, Says Writer Richard Curtis
Image
“Notting Hill” screenwriter Richard Curtis is detailing why there hasn’t been a sequel: And it turns out Julia Roberts part of the reason why.

Curtis told IndieWire while promoting his upcoming Netflix animated film “That Christmas,” which premieres December 4, that he wanted to do a “mini sequel” to the beloved 1999 rom-com as part of Red Nose Day. However, Roberts had issues with the script idea, which involved her A-list actress character Anna Scott divorcing bookstore owner William Thacker, played by Curtis’ longtime collaborator Hugh Grant.

Curtis previously has reunited the cast of his feature “Love Actually” for short film follow-ups that benefit the annual charity event.

When asked if Curtis would want to revisit any of his past films in a formal feature sequel form, he said, “I don’t think so. I actually did four Red Nose Days and Comic Relief. We did those mini sequels to ‘Love Actually’ and those satisfied me.

10 Non-Musical Movies With 1 Incredible Musical Sequence
Image
Surprisingly, some of the best musical sequences in cinematic history aren't found in true musicals. Traditionally, the best musicals are able to express character's feelings directly to the audience in a way that feels powerful instead of expositional. Over the years, a long list of movies have leaned into this idea, but not all fully committed to it. In other words, some movies were willing to make song and dance a big part of a major scene, but didn't want it to define the story.

There is a long history in Hollywood of dramas and comedies to have one special musical sequence to express a characters emotions in a way that goes beyond simple words. While the feeling being expressed is usually romantic, it can be silly or entertaining in its delivery, with the song used to convey powerful emotion.

Why Netflix Canceled The Society After One Season
Image
Netflix has a long, storied history of canceling shows early on in their runs. The winner of the streaming wars may spend billions of dollars on original movies and TV shows, but letting any of those shows live beyond a few seasons is a rarity. 2019's young adult series "The Society" was one of those shows that was a one-and-done, with the series lasting just a single season. But that wasn't the original plan. So, why was this popular series canceled after only one season?

For those who may not be familiar, "The Society" follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to an exact replica of their wealthy New England town, only with no trace of their parents to be found. The series hailed from Chris Keyser and Marc Webb with a promising young cast led by then-up-and-comer Kathryn Newton.

Originally, Netflix had renewed "The Society" for a second season.
