Saiyaara (2025) Movie Review: A Somewhat Sincere Love Ballad Peppered With Familiar Mohit Suri-Isms
Image
A month ago, most of us did not know about “Saiyaara” or the people who starred in it. Fast forward to now, and the film has slowly creeped up on everyone’s collective timelines, whilst raising a storm at the box office. Not only has it turned eyeballs, but its surge has made it bigger than it was ever supposed to be. So, although the mystery of this phenomenon remains largely unknown, it’s not difficult to understand why the Indian audience would flock to an old-school romance, loosely fitted to imperfection for the new generation.

I mean, after being served with jingoistic, testosterone-fueled bullshit for years, the recent resurgence of going back to basics has sparked some newfound hope in the movie-going audience. Only a few weeks ago, we were dipped in nostalgia with Anurag Basu’s “Metro…In Dino,” and now Mohit Suri has offered another call-back to...

Mohit Suri’s ‘Saiyaara’ Sets Sights on Bollywood Love Stories Comeback: ‘Romance as a Genre Is Waiting to Deliver’
Image
The romance genre is primed for a comeback in Bollywood, and director Mohit Suri believes his upcoming film “Saiyaara” could be the catalyst.

The anticipated Hindi-language romantic drama marks the first collaboration between Yash Raj Films (Yrf) and Suri.

“Romance as a genre is waiting to deliver and it should happen with ‘Saiyaara,'” says Suri, who celebrates his 20th year in cinema with the project. The film has already generated significant buzz with its teaser and hit songs.

“Saiyaara” launches Ahaan Panday as a Yrf hero, with the studio handpicking Aneet Padda – who captured hearts with her acclaimed performance in “Big Girls Don’t Cry”- as their next leading lady.

For Suri, whose romantic filmography includes “Aashiqui 2,” “Awarapan,” and “Hamari Adhuri Kahani,” the project represents a return to his roots. “For me, romance is a genre that I love the most maybe because I have always been...

This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha Celebrates 18 Years Of Mahesh Bhatt-Mohit Suri’s Awarapan
Image
Celebrating the Mahesh Bhatt-Mohit Suri’s Awarapan, which starred Emraan Hashmi, Subhash K Jha looks back at the drama that released in 2007. And Mahesh Bhatt reveals what he thinks made Awarapan so special in a new installment of This Day That Year.

Freedom could be a song or it could be a poem. In Awarapan, it’s a thought that gets smothered in a stifled scream. Mohit Suri has specialised in manifesting the fears and anxieties of tortured souls in flight. After trying it out with lukewarm success in Kalyug and Woh Lamhe, he gets it right this time.

Freedom is a major driving force behind Mahesh Bhatt’s cinema. Like it or not, Mahesh’s tortured vision colours and complements every frame that his protégées, from Anurag Basu to Mohit Suri, have created. In this hauntingly delineated portrait of a woman’s right to self-fulfillment, Mohit Suri...

Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, the Bollywood action thriller was theatrically released on January 31, 2025. It opened to mixed reviews from critics, but the performance of Shahid Kapoor was appreciated unanimously. It had a share of massy elements but that didn’t help in getting much traction. “The trailer of Mohit Suri’s Malang is like a rollercoaster ride …on speed” – Subhash K Jha
The trailer of Mohit Suri’s Malang is like a rollercoaster ride …on Speed. The images are deliberately done in distinctive blotchy colours to show minds on the brink. Producer Luv Ranjan says Malang is the most emotionally violent film he has produced. After seeing the trailer I have to agree.

There are no normal characters in Malang, at least none is visible in the tempestuous trailer. Each of the four protagonists played by Aditya Roy Kapoor, Disha Patani, Kunal Khemmu and (above all) Anil Kapoor is high on life. They jump off planes, they whizz past life in fast cars, they bathe themselves in bright colours.

These are characters who live in the fast aand furious lane. I don’t know what motivates their ceaseless rush of surplus adrenaline, maybe the realization that any of the fearless four can end up dead on the slippery sidewalk.

Mohit Suri’s characters,...

Mohit Suri: “Ek Villain is an unconventional musical romance born out of angst”
Director Mohit Suri, who is, at 33, Bollywood’s youngest veteran, is already nine films old.

Some of his earlier films like Awarapan, Zeher, Woh Lamhe, Murder-2 and Aashiqui-2, are evidence of his school of romance, which keeps away from roses and candy floss. In a time where run-of-the-mill romantic comedies are abundant, Suri’s cinema continues to depict romance in its intense, haunting and raw form.

His forthcoming release, Ek Villain, is a story about prohibited and forbidden love, bearing the quintessential Suri trademark.

Says Mohit, “Ek Villain speaks of a love that wasn’t meant to be. The sweet girl-next-door with fire in her heart and an angry young man hell-bent on setting the world on fire. This is an unconventional musical romance born out of angst.”

From all the new screen pairings, the fresh Sidharth – Shraddha combination has evoked unprecedented excitement amongst the youth. Trade pundits are gambling...

Top Pakistani singers roped in for Ek Villain
By launching Atif Aslam into the world of Bollywood, the Bhatts and director Mohit Suri opened the doors for accomplished and ambitious Pakistani artistes to become a part of the Indian music scene.

Mustafa Zahid, the lead vocalist of the Lahore-based Roxen band, became a Bhatt favorite, as he rendered hit numbers for Awarapan, Blood Money and Aashiqui-2. Subsequently, Balaji used his golden voice in Shootout at Wadala and Ragini Mms-2. Both Suri and Balaji, who are coming together on the keenly awaited Ek Villain, have continued the tryst with Pakistan, by getting Mustafa to render the ‘Zaroorat’ track in Ek Villain. Picturised on Sidharth Malhotra and Shraddha Kapoor, and composed and written by Mithoon, ‘Zaroorat’ is expected to release online on May 29.

If this wasn’t enough, Suri has introduced a Pakistani band, Soch, to compose and render a track called ‘Awari’ in Ek Villain. Composed, rendered and...

Mohit Suri talks about unconventional casting and great music in Ek Villain
Mohit Suri’s Ek Villain starring Riteish Deshmukh, Sidharth Malhotra and Shraddha Kapoor is among the most keenly awaited films of the season what with his enviable track record of blockbusters behind him.

Talking about the film’s unusual casting, Mohit says, “I’ve never followed convention. I’ve never cast people just because they’re hot or popular. For me, it’s always been about who is right for the role. Riteish, for instance, has never done something like this before. You’ve seen him largely in comic roles. Yet when you watch Ek Villain you will realize that there is no one better than Riteish for this role. Sidharth has struggled his way up; he’s seen dark days. There was angst in him that made him a perfect fit for this film. Shraddha is more like a boyfriend, a guy buddy I can call in the middle of the night.

Mustafa Zahid sings for Tiger Shroff in Heropanti
Mustafa Zahid, who is swiftly storming the Bollywood playback scene, has added another feather to his cap.

He has sung a track for Jackie Shroff’s son, Tiger, who is gearing up for a high-profile launch by Sajid Nadiadwala in the forthcoming Heropanti, releasing worldwide on May 23.

The Pakistan-based rock star created a special acoustic version of the track ‘Tere Bina’, which will feature in the background during a high-voltage emotional sequence between Tiger Shroff and Kriti Shannon.

Having lent his voice for Emraan Hashmi (Awarapan), Kunal Kemmu (Blood Money), John Abraham (Shootout At Wadala), Aditya Roy Kapoor (Aashiqui-2), Randeep Hooda (Murder-3) and Sunny Leone (Ragini Mms-2), Mustafa is overwhelmed with the response to his newest track for Tiger.

Continuing to be the voice of Bollywood’s Gen-x, word has it that Mustafa has also rendered a Mithoon composition (‘Zaroorat’) for the handsome Sidharth Malhotra in Balaji and Mohit Suri’s keenly awaited Ek Villain.

Koffee with Karan Season 4: With Emraan Hashmi and Mahesh Bhatt
Stars come and go on this show. Some entertain, some make us yawn. But this time, Karan Johar brought to his couch the not so social yet popular for his numerous kisses on screen actor Emraan Hashmi. The second guest of the night is probably the most transparent filmmaker of the industry at present, Mahesh Bhatt. This episode was nothing like a usual filmy chat, but instead we not only had moments that left us speechless but also got an insight on this side of cinema that is still being experimented with.

Emraan Hashmi is barely seen on the off sets scenario, and as even K Jo pointed out we have never seen his wife. “I did try to experiment the peripherals of the industry but I realised that I don’t enjoy it. It’s not my thing. Since I don’t watch Bollywood films, what do I even talk about at film parties?...
