Exclusive: IFC Films and AMC+ have snapped up the U.S rights to Freegard from directors Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn.
The pic will see a theatrical release, PVOD and streaming debut on AMC+ later this summer.
The project is inspired by the chilling true story of conman Robert Freegard (James Norton) and Alice Archer (Gemma Arterton), the woman who brought him down. A master manipulator, Freegard kidnapped countless victims, convincing them he was undercover MI5. A tale of lies, loyalty, gaslighting, fear, hope, and the investigation and high-stakes manhunt, which saved the life of Freegard’s final victim.
Patterson and Lawn co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Bronner (The Mauritanian) based on the article Chasing Agent Freegard by Bronner. The pic also stars Shazad Latif (Star Trek Discovery), Marisa Abela (Industry), Edwina Findley (The Wire), Sarah Goldberg (The Dark Knight Rises), Jimmy Akingbola (Ted Lasso), and Julian Barratt (The Mighty...

Former Tele München Group managing director Herbert Kloiber’s Night Train Media has taken a majority stake in London-based non-scripted distributor BossaNova as it looks to align its documentary and drama businesses.
Under the deal, BossaNova — founded last year by non-scripted veterans Paul Heaney and Dina Subhani — will have access to an acquisition fund to fulfil the company’s mission of co-creating and co-funding projects by matching producers with the most relevant platforms and broadcasters: a clever model in the non-scripted arena that was popularized by Heaney at his former company, Tcb Media Rights, which was sold to “Pooch Perfect” distributor Beyond Rights last summer.
Earlier this year, as part of its inaugural BossaNova Development Day, the distributor connected with more than 50 buyers and commissioners from 35 channels and platforms with 30 producers, who pitched over 75 new projects. The company has also recently made its first volume catalogue buy, acquiring more than...

Gold Derby’s “American Idol” predictions center has been open for less than a week, but we already have ourselves a front-runner to win Season 19: Grace Kinstler. This 20-year-old college student from Lakewood, Il went viral with her original audition of “Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin, earning more YouTube views than anyone not named Claudia Conway.
Grace easily scored a Golden Ticket to Hollywood, where she’s been a fan-fave ever since. According to our odds, Willie Spence is currently in second place to win, while Chayce Beckham comes in third. Do you agree with your fellow “Idol” fans that Grace is the one to beat? Make your own predictions and then sound off down in the comments section.
See ‘American Idol’ schedule for season 19: When is the finale?
During Hollywood Week, Grace took on “10 Seconds” for the genre challenge, “Grenade” as her duet with Alyssa Wray and “Father” as her showstopper.

“The Lady Vanishes One More Time”
By Raymond Benson
The Criterion Collection has issued a Blu-ray upgrade to a previous winning DVD release—Carol Reed’s World War II suspense adventure, Night Train to Munich. It’s a terrific example of the fine cinema Britain was managing to produce even while at war. Released there in August of 1940, the country was already in the conflict, although the Blitz had not yet occurred.
What’s more striking is its resemblance to Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes (1938) in tone, setting, and even characters. Marketing pushes at the time suggested that Night Train to Munich was a “sequel” to Vanishes, which was an extremely popular movie on both sides of the Atlantic. Night Train is not a sequel, though—it’s more of a remake.

Jim Weatherly, the songwriter behind a string of 1970s hits for Gladys Knight & the Pips, including the destined-for-standard-status “Midnight Train to Georgia,” died Wednesday of natural causes at his home near Nashville. He was 77.
The singer-songwriter’s death was reported by music publisher and friend Charlie Monk to the Nashville Tennessean.
In addition to “Midnight Train to Georgia,” Weatherly wrote the early ’70s Knight hits “Neither One of Us Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye” and “You’re the Best Thing (That Ever Happened to Me).”
“I’m missing Jim Weatherly already,” Knight tweeted. “He was about life and love. ‘Neither One of Us’ and ‘Midnight Train’ – I remember him getting his Grammys for those. We were just made for each other. We grew our lives together. I’m gonna miss him terribly and love him always.”

Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 2
“You’ve achieved great things.”
“No, not yet.”
Fringe is a television series about an unstable rift between two alternate Earths where the survival of one depends on the destruction of the other. The characters on these opposing Earths both view themselves as the heroes because by nature the very existence of the other Earth makes it the “enemy.” Neither side functions as a villain, but this necessity for survival demands that they’re both viewed in this light anyway. The alternative is to accept that the other side deserves to exist more. It’s a fascinating question to have the audience consider, but Attack on Titan pushes this challenging paradigm to an even more ambitious place with how its fourth season presents the rest of its story. “Midnight Train” adds another satisfying layer to this larger question...

Having won the Golden Bear of the 64th Berlinale with “Black Coal, Thin Ice” in 2014, Chinese film has gained the attention of an international audience once more. “The Wild Goose Lake” continues the social realism that Diao Yinan laid out in his big festival hit. His first features “Uniform” (2003) and “Night Train” (2007) already showed the daily life of China’s citizens, focusing on relevant topics of power and identity in the context of the working class. “Black Coal, Thin Ice” dealt with the conflict between communism and capitalism. A symbolic crime story that touches the conflict between China’s past and present. “The Wild Goose Lake” can be seen clearly in the tradition of its predecessors, as Diao picks up all of the previous topics, but also brings his noted visual presentation to perfection.

Carol Morely’s fourth feature Out Of Blue stars Patricia Clarkson as a troubled detective on the pursuit of a suspected serial killer. Adapted from Martin Amis’s 1997 novel Night Train and with a screenplay courtesy of director herself, the film has aspirations of being a smart hardboiled neo-noir with a cosmic twist, but in reality it is a decidedly muddled, jarringly directionless and an altogether baffling offering from a filmmaker who, it has to be said, is capable of far more coherent output.
When famous astrophysicist Jennifer Rockwell (Mamie Gummer) is found dead at the observatory of her New Orleans university, detective Mike Hoolihan (Clarkson) is compelled by an unknown force that appears to bind her with the dead woman to pursue the case and find her killer. Some murder mysteries begin with murders; some begin with Mamie Gummer giving a lecture on a rooftop, arguing that all life springs from death, all death springs from life, and 90% of matter is invisible. “You can tell a lot by looking,” she tells her students. But in the world of “Out of Blue,” it’s the telling that takes up most of the running time, and it’s a little monotonous, if we’re being honest.
Patricia Clarkson stars as Mike Hoolihan, a detective investigating the death of astrophysicist Jennifer Rockwell (Gummer), who was shot in an observatory shortly after that opening lecture. Rockwell’s death is no ordinary murder. It looks suspiciously like the work of the never-captured but long since retired “.38 Caliber Killer.” And all of the suspects are spacey intellectuals who pontificate about highfalutin concepts like Schrödinger’s cat and alternate realities when they should be telling...

Without necessarily admiring the result, one can admire the wackadoodle ambition of Carol Morley’s “Out of Blue” (the missing definite article is itself a salutary warning about a plot that will misplace a whole bunch of articles en route to its mystifying finale). It’s not every filmmaker, after all, who’ll toss astrophysics, metaphysics, Martin Amis, cop procedurals, recovered memories, serial killers, family tragedies and a whole dress-up chest of unlikely costumes and props into the stratosphere on just her third narrative feature, and it’s the sort of reckless abandon we ought to applaud. But rather like Schrödinger’s famous thought experiment, which is laboriously outlined twice during this glitchy, shambolic affair, the resulting admixture exists in a quantum state. Schrödinger’s beleaguered cat is both alive and dead; “Out of Blue” is, at all times, both sort of interesting and quite bad — equal parts workaday homage...

Patricia Clarkson is drawn into a black hole of murder, murk and existential angst in this adaptation of Martin Amis’s Night Train
Carol Morley’s Out of Blue is an intriguing and perplexing creation, starting with that title, from which the word “the” seems to have been removed, making what’s on offer sound like an impressionist painting or a classic jazz album, or some slangily described phenomenon of theoretical physics. Carol Morley’s Out of Blue is an intriguing and perplexing creation, starting with that title, from which the word “the” seems to have been removed, making what’s on offer sound like an impressionist painting or a classic jazz album, or some slangily described phenomenon of theoretical physics. Chinese director Zhang Ming’s “The Pluto Moment” (“Ming Wang Xing Shi Ke”) has been acquired by French sales agent Loco Films ahead of its world premiere at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight.
Based on “The Tale of Darkness,” a traditional local song of mourning, “The Pluto Moment” follows Wang Zhun, a director in search of inspiration for his new script, who embarks on an unpredictable trek across the mountainous region of Shennongjia in Hubei province with his savvy producer Ding Hongmei, young actor Bai, and photographer Du Chun. The journey brings them unexpected physical challenges, while also bearing witnesses to the subtle emotional ebbs and flows of the protagonists.

Harlem's Apollo Theater, where James Brown recorded his legendary live album in 1962, was built in a middle school auditorium in Natchez, Miss., for the movie Get on Up. Photos Comic-Con: Our 10 Best Dressed "We got lucky," says production designer Mark Ricker. "The auditorium had just enough architecture going on that we could [add to]. We extended the stage, built all the boxes, a section of the balcony and just painted the hell out of the place." *full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by IFC Films. Director: Vincenzo Natali. Writer: Brian King. Cast: Abigail Breslin, Stephen McHattie, David Hewlett and Peter Outerbridge. Haunter is a film from American director Vincenzo Natali (Splice) and writer Brian King (Night Train). Natali has created a few standout films in his career, including 1997's chilling Cube. His latest is a haunted house thriller, which offers a few surprises in its short runtime. Very mysterious, Haunter brings an intriguing protagonist into this puzzling film. This title, from IFC Films, is one of the better horror features to release so far this year. The film begins and ends with Lisa (Abigail Breslin). She comes out of the Matrix (1999) of her life, after noticing how her life keeps repeating. Events start to change when she expresses the repetition to her family. More characters, also trapped in some sort of limbo,...

Vincenzo Natali (Cube) is the director behind the supernatural thriller Haunter. This film was developed from Brian King's (Night Train) script. Also, Haunter had its World Premiere at the South-by Southwest Film Festival in March of this year (Austin, Texas). And, the film stars Stephen McHattie (Pontypool) and Abigail Breslin (Zombieland). The film's first trailer reveals a little more from the film's storyline. Haunter is developed with a reverse plotline, in which a ghost realizes that another character is not actually haunting her. But, the other character, Olivia (Eleanor Zichy), is actually alive and the protagonist, Lisa (Breslin), is dead. However, Lisa has a tale to tell Olivia. And together, they attempt to track down a serial killer, called the Pale Man (McHattie). The Pale Man, in the clip, has other, more sinister plans for Olivia, though. Distribution house IFC Films has picked up this film for distribution in North America.

After venturing into thriller territory with The Call, teenage actress Abigail Breslin is now in straight-up horror territory with Haunter, the new film from Splice director Vincenzo Natali. When we heard about the story in the spring of 2012, it sounded like an original approach to familiar ghost stories we've seen before. However, this first trailer seems to be trying to hide the unique twist on this kind of thriller. We won't spoil it just in case that might ruin the movie, but you won't have to search far to find the original plot synopsis. The down side is without knowing those details, the film looks painfully generic for the genre. Here's the first trailer for Vincenzo Natali's Haunter, originally from Apple: Vincenzo Natali (Splice) directs Haunter from a script by Brian King (Cypher, Night Train). Abigail Breslin stars as a young girl who must unravel a decades-old mystery to...

Splice director Vincenzo Natali’s new supernatural tale Haunter was just picked up by IFC Midnight for distribution after showing at South By Southwest. Haunter is written by Brian King who also wrote Night Train and Cypher, and stars Abigail Breslin as a teenage girl who is forced to relive the day she died.
"It's not just King's deftly-layered and slyly contorted screenplay or Jon Joffin's frankly beautiful cinematography that makes Haunter such an interesting little 'throwback' thriller. Natali and editor Michael Doherty seem intent on playing games with their viewers, and only those who have a lot of experience with haunted house movies will be able to glean a few early clues," Scott Weinberg said in his review from SXSW.

Appearances can be deceiving. It’s a bright, sunny Tuesday afternoon in May, 2012. The air is calm. It’s warm and peaceful outside. As the cliché goes, it feels like a good day to be alive. And yet, inside an unassuming studio building, tucked away on a downtown Toronto side road, dwells a malevolent, and rest assuredly, undead presence. This is the set for the supernatural thriller, Haunter, from Cube/Splice director Vincenzo Natali, Ginger Snaps producer Steven Hoban and Night Train scribe Brian King.
Described as “a reverse ghost story,” the movie follows Lisa Johnson (Zombieland’s Abigail Breslin), a teenage girl who died under mysterious circumstances in 1986 and whose spirit is trapped in her former family home. Now, she must somehow warn the current residents about the sinister Pale Man (Pontypool’s Stephen McHattie), before they fall prey to his evil as well. And the only way to...

Video Nasty is a term coined in the United Kingdom in 1982, describing films that were criticized by the press and religious groups for their violent content. The concern being that with titles available on home video, the films were accessible by anyone, with no age restrictions. The lack of a censorship system for home video titles led to The Video Recordings Act 1984. The Video Recordings Act required stricter censorship standards for titles released to home video than what was required for a film’s theatrical release.
With the introduction of home video in the UK, the governing standard of decency was the obscene publications act of 1959. Under that act, any title found to be indecent by the Director of Public Prosecutions could find the film’s producers, distributors and retailers subject to prosecution. The act also allowed for local police to seize content from video retailers if they felt that...

Nashville, Tenn. -- Turns out Adele ruled 2012, too – and set a record while she was at it.
The British singer's "21" was the highest-selling album in the U.S. for the second consecutive year, according to 2012 sales figures released by Nielsen SoundScan on Thursday. That's a first in the SoundScan era.
Adele sold 4.4 million copies of the album in 2012 after selling 5.8 million in 2011. She crossed the 10 million threshold in November and was only rivaled by Taylor Swift, whose "Red" was second on the list. If her album sales continue apace in 2013, `21' will move into the top 10 list for sales since 1993, when SoundScan began current tracking methods.
Gotye scored the year's top-selling song with "Somebody That I Used To Know" featuring Kimbra. The song was downloaded a record 6.8 million times. Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" was next at 6.5 million. Both songs are the first to cross the 6 million digital sales mark,...

Nashville, Tenn. — Winning the Country Music Association Awards' entertainer of the year is a top honor and always counted as a career high point. But for Blake Shelton it wasn't even the most memorable moment of an amazing Thursday night.
"The Voice" star took home three trophies, including his third straight male vocalist victory, but nothing compared to sharing song of the year with wife Miranda Lambert. The pair wrote "Over You," about the death of Shelton's brother Richie in a car wreck 15 years ago. He said that trophy will always have a special place in their Oklahoma home.
"For me as a songwriter that is as personal as I can get," Shelton said. "So that songwriter award, song of the year award, it will have its own shelf. It will have spotlights on it and an alarm and everything. Trip wires and there will be a land mine if you walk towards it.

His closest competition comes from Jason Aldean who contended in this category for the first time last year. While he lost this race, he did win Album of the Year for "My Kinda Party." His newest disc, "Night Train," just debuted in the top slot on the Billboard 200. He has odds of 13 to 8 to win this award. The Broken Bow release not only secures the country superstar his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 but also the second-largest debut of the year. Only Mumford & Sons' Babel, which moved 600,000 in its first week (Oct. 13), started with a bigger number.
