Based on the first volume of the "Moribito" fantasy novel series by Nahoko Uehashi: "Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit" (published July 1996 by Kaisei-Sha). The animated adaptation greatly expands the midsection of the novel.
The live action version of the series, Seirei no moribito (2016) (Seirei no moribito), was released in 2016 and ran for three seasons.
