Roundtable Entertainment has announced that they’re teaming up with director Mark Pellington – whose credits include Arlington Road, The Mothman Prophecies, Henry Poole Is Here, The Last Word, The Severing, and Survive, among many other projects – for the adrenaline-fueled human trafficking revenge thriller Mom.
Scripted by Brent Jordan, Mom tells the compelling story of a single mother embarking on a daring cross-country rescue mission, piecing together clues in the search for her teenage daughter who has fallen victim to the horrors of human trafficking.
Casting Director Lisa Zagoria, who assembled the cast for the Best Picture winner Coda, will be handling the casting of this film as well.
Pellington had this to say about the project: “Mom is a fast-moving story of protection and revenge. The film explores the true price of violence and the cost of justice, when an ordinary mom is pushed to an extraordinary place. This is a muscular,...

“Pellington’s boldest and most audacious film to date, an unclassifiable dance movie that plays like a cross between Wim Wenders’ Pina and Saw…Pellington moves beyond the limitations of narrative to get at something primal and raw—but also ultimately transcendent and life affirming—that perfectly conveys the transformative effects of grief and loss.”

Director Mark Pellington has long been one of the American cinema’s great chroniclers of grief, from early genre films like The Mothman Prophecies to more overtly philosophical takes on the subject like I Melt With You, The Last Word, and Nostalgia. While Pellington’s work is undeniably informed by the devastating loss of his wife Jennifer in 2004, it has tended, up until this point, to come at the subject from oblique angles, as in the 2008 dramedy Henry Poole Is Here. It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Cantankerous old grump teaches directionless young people about life… in a way that is totally obnoxious and not in the least bit convincing. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women

It is not impossible to tell a story about a nasty character and make us like him or her. This is not a movie that achieves that. MaryAnn’s quick take… The ultimate anti-disaster movie. A supremely gripping and powerfully emotional film about, paradoxically, what happens when everything works as it should. I’m “biast” (pro): I remember that day vividly…

And almost everyone walked away unhurt. A bit cold and wet. One flight attendant got a nasty cut on her leg. We didn’t know that at the time. All we knew was that a goddamn plane had landed on the river and everything was fine.
It almost sounds like that...

The CW won't be returning to the place that's "not as brightly lit", as the network has apparently passed on the reboot of George A. Romero's 1980s anthology series, Tales From the Darkside.
According to CarterMatt.com, The CW will not be moving forward with their Tales From the Darkside reboot, with the show's anthology format and lack of a showrunner reportedly two of the reasons why the network passed on the series.
Joe Hill (Horns, NOS4A2, Locke & Key) wrote and executive produced the project and Kris Lemche (Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., Final Destination 3, Ginger Snaps, eXistenZ, Haven) was playing the lead role, a character named Newman who had knowledge of The Darkside and was going to appear in all (or most) episodes.

"...there is, unseen by most, an underworld, a place that is just as real, but not as brightly lit... a darkside." This underworld can now expect its first visitor, as the reboot of George A. Romero's 1980s anthology series Tales From the Darkside, a project that was recently given a pilot order from The CW, has now cast its lead.

Romero, anthology series Tales From the Darkside was The Twilight Zone of the 1980’s, delivering stories brimming with horror, science fiction, and dark humor into living rooms from ’84–’88, and continuing to bring the chills and thrills decades later as reruns. Since 2013, a reboot of Tales From the Darkside has been in the works, but now The CW has made it official by ordering the pilot episode.
Deadline reports that an hour-long Tales From the Darkside pilot has been ordered by The CW for their 2015–’16 schedule. Comic-Con is a wonderful place, one where exciting scoops can emerge from unexpected places. Attendees at the panel for Alexandre Aja’s upcoming Horns, a Daniel Radcliffe-led horror comedy about a young man trying to solve his girlfriend’s murder (which looks amazing by the way), were treated to plenty of information about that project, but one well-placed question led to an update about an entirely different but also promising project – Universal’s comic adaptation Locke & Key.
Joe Hill, the comic-book artist whose novel served as the inspiration for Horns, delivered the news, confirming that the long-in-development project will in fact be a trilogy and is currently taking shape at Universal Pictures. Albert Torres, the screenwriter of Henry Poole is Here, the upcoming Akira remake and an announced live-action version of Ben 10, has been tapped to adapt the L0cke & Key comic-book series, which Hill co-wrote with Gabriel Rodriguez.

Universal is wasting no time in getting their adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s Locke & Key off the ground. The studio acquired the rights to Idw Publishing’s supernatural graphic novel series last month and this week, they’ve brought on Henry Poole is Here scribe Albert Torres to pen the screenplay.
Torres’ resume is a bit lacking at the moment, though he’s reportedly been busy “tackling heavy-hitting tentpoles.” He worked on a draft of Warner Brothers’ own long-gestating graphic novel adaptation, Akira, as well as scripts for Silver Pictures’ Ben 10 and Paramount’s adaptation of the Dark Horse comic, Hyde.

Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Bobby Cohen are to produce, as is Ted Adams, the CEO and publisher of Idw Publishing, the company behind the comic.

Over a year after Universal Pictures acquired the theatrical rights for Locke & Key, the studio has brought on Albert Torres to write the adapted screenplay.
Joe Hill (Horns) and Gabriel Rodriguez created the comic book series, which follows three siblings who move into their creepy ancestral home in Maine, after their father passes away. They come to learn that the house comes with a set of magical keys that gives the user mysterious, supernatural powers, before discovering that an evil demon also wants the keys.
Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Bobby Cohen will produce alongside Ted Adams, the CEO of Idw which publishes the comic book series. No production schedule was given. Locke & Key was previously adapted as a TV pilot for Fox, but it was never ordered to series.

Albert Torres ("Henry Poole is Here") has been selected to pen the latest attempt to adapt Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's award-winning supernatural comic book series "Locke & Key" at Universal Pictures.
Set in a small Massachusetts village, the story follows a mother and her three children who move into their family estate after her husband is murdered. The vast estate has many areas only accessible by special keys, while a malevolent force within the house lures the husband's killer to the town to finish off the rest of the family.
Originally "Transformers" and "Star Trek" scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman had planned to adapt the property into a single film. That collapsed, leading to a TV series adaptation. A Mark Romanek-directed pilot was produced but didn't get picked up to series.
Then in late 2012 came word that Orci and Kurtzman were planning to turn the property into a film trilogy at Universal.

Locke & Key tried to find life on the small screen, but the adaptation of the acclaimed comic book series never made it past the pilot stage. Fortunately for fans, Universal picked up the rights to the comics not too long ago and now they're getting serious about making the film as they've hired a writer to pen the script.
Locke & Key are among some of my favorite comics. They don't feature any superheroes, but it's a powerful story about dealing with loss, the supernatural, and figuring out what it means to grow up. If you haven't read it, the series from Joe Hill has wrapped up and all six graphic novels are available for purchase. I highly recommend them.
As such, I'm pretty excited to hear that Universal (thanks to THR for the scoop) have hired a writer for their big screen adaptation of the series:

On Wednesday, Feb. 26, ABC premieres "Mixology," a comedy set in one night in one bar -- high-end Manhattan watering hole Mix -- as 10 single people try to find love, or at least lust.
Blake Lee stars as Tom, a man recently dumped by his fiancee, whose friends -- confident Cal (Craig Frank) and fast-talking Bruce (Andrew Santino) -- are tossing him into the singles pool after a decade off the market. First, he meets beautiful but brutal attorney Maya (Ginger Gonzaga), which leaves him in tears. It gets worse after that.
"Cal is the more levelheaded, clear-thinking man," Santino tells Zap2it, "and Tom is very impulsive and nervous and riddled with anxiety, and Bruce is the devil on his shoulder, if you will. I'm trying to get Tom to do something he's not used to. Instead of putting his feet in the water, I tell him to jump all...

We heard some time ago that Joel Silver - producer of, among many others things, Sherlock Holmes, V For Vendetta, and the Matrix trilogy - had signed on to develop a live-action feature film based on Cartoon Network's Ben 10 sci-fi franchise, with an eye toward distribution through Warner Bros. The show's creator gave us an update a while ago, but aside from that all had been quiet since. But now THR report that the movie has a new writer - Ryan Engle, who is also working on New Line’s adaptation of the Rampage video game and New Regency’s The New West, which is based on a comic from Black Bull Media. Engle will work off of the script by Albert Torres (Henry Poole Is Here).

Screenwriter Albert Torres who is currently modifying the script for the live-action Akira movie, will rewrite the screenplay for the feature adaptation of The Strange Case of Mr. Hyde, based on the Dark Horse graphic novel.
The Strange Case of Mr. Hyde follows a recently rehabilitated Dr. Jekyll tracking down a criminal (or monster) using an improved formula from the infamous Hyde Experiment. Awesome book, awesome graphic novel, now if they would only make the film awesome as well – I’d be the happiest person in the world (yeah, I’m That demanding, hahah).
Torres has no actual finished credit to his name other than Henry Poole is Here, which is a low budget Luke Wilson dramedy.

Screenwriter Albert Torres ("Henry Poole Is Here," "Akira") has come on board to pen a re-write of the film adaptation of Cole Haddon's 2011 graphic novel "The Strange Case of Hyde" at Dark Horse Entertainment, Skydance Productions and the Mark Gordon Company.
A pseudo-sequel to the classic Robert Louis Stevenson story, the action is set five years later with Dr. Jekyll in prison and allegedly rehabilitated.
Inspector Thomas Adye of Scotland Yard commissions Jekyll into hunting down a new terror, a monster that has been murdering prostitutes and appears to be the product of an improved version of the infamous Hyde serum.
Adding to the complications, it seems Jekyll isn't completely cured of Hyde either.

According to The Wrap, screenwriter Albert Torres (Henry Poole Is Here) has been hired to write a new draft of the planned big screen adaptation of The Strange Case Of Hyde, a Dark Horse graphic novel which was written by Cole Haddon and published last year. The film adaptation is being produced by Dark Horse Entertainment, Skydance Productions and Mark Gordon Productions. The story (which serves as a sequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde) follows Dr. Jekyll, after he is allegedly rehabilitated, and released from prison to help hunt a new monster who appears to be using an improved version of the infamous Hyde serum. Is there any show that is more shambled, barely wheezing and in a shell of its former self than "The Office"? After Steve Carell exited the show (which was already wobbling in its last season with him), it seems the writers and showrunners had no idea what to do, flailing about as the comedy got much more broad, and the focus shifted away from the absurd mundane workaday life at Dunder Mifflin, into the corporate shenanigans at Sabre -- and all this while trying to establish Rainn Wilson as the show's next breakout star (plans to spin off Dwight Schrute into his own show, "The Farm," seem ill-advised at best). Anyway, long story short, they need some new life and they are pinning the hopes on some young talent.

Get ready for even more Ben 10. In the Cartoon Network animated series, Ben Tennyson tangos with aliens. Now Joel Silver has set his sights on making a major live action motion picture out of Ben’s stories. Today we learned the project now has a writer. The scribe’s name is Albert Torres and here is why you should be excited about that.
Torres has been official hired by Silver Pictures to write the script for the live-action Ben 10 movie. He wrote the script for the black comedy, Henry Poole is Here, but also flexed his screenwriting muscle by performing a rewrite on the script for what was supposed to be a life-action version of Akira.
According to Variety, Joel Silver’s baby still doesn’t have a distributor, yet but everyone hopes Warner Bros. will take the bait very soon. will sign on due to the close...

Last summer, we brought you the news when the Cartoon Network signed a deal with Silver Pictures to develop a live action, feature film version of their animated series Ben 10. The series focuses on a boy named Ben Tennyson who gets his hands on an alien, watch-like device called the Omnitrix, that allows him to turn into various alien creatures, which he uses to fight evil, with the help of his cousin Gwen, and Grandpa Max.
Now, Variety reports that Albert Torres (Henry Poole Is Here), who most recently rewrote the Akira script for Warner Bros. Pictures has been hired by Silver Pictures to write the script for the big-screen project.
No production or release dates have been announced for Ben 10.

A lengthy seven and a half months after Joel Silver got his hands on the property, Variety reports that a screenwriter has boarded a live-action take on Ben 1o Alien Force, simply titled Ben 10. That fellow is Albert Torres, writer of Henry Poole is Here and, no less, one of the many names attached to the script of Warner’s Akira. For Silver — and, it looks like, Warner Bros. — he’ll be adapting the tale of “Ben Tennyson, a boy who can transform into 10 different alien creatures with the help of a glovelike device called the Omnitrix.”
This, on the surface, will come across to some as a minor update, but it’s actually a big step forward — especially since I thought this project just kind of fell by the wayside. Now, I don’t know if Torres can actually make something strong out of this material — his weak...

In spite of the fact that the 2011 Sundance Film Festival press screening of director Mark Pellington's (Henry Poole is Here) new movie, I Melt With You, resulted in what New York Magazine (Nym) described as a "moviegoer exodus," speculatively attributed to the "movie's constant drug-taking, which is so immense that the characters may have more lines of coke than lines of dialogue," Magnolia Pictures picked up the distribution rights to the movie and will be releasing it On Demand on Nov. 4, before its limited theatrical run on Dec. 9.
Written by Glenn Porter, I Melt With You stars Rob Lowe, Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven and Christian McKay as four former high school friends who reunite at a summer beach house to, as Nym puts it, "do drugs, cry and scream about their midlife crises, and do more drugs." Watch the new Red Band trailer and see for yourself why some...

Cocaine. I think the "you" in the title is cocaine. Magnolia Pictures has passed along the red band trailer for the Mark Pellington-directed (Arlington Road, Henry Poole Is Here) I Melt With You. From the look of the trailer, the mid-life crisis ensemble drama is some kind of mash up of The Big Chill and Stag. Or Very Bad Things if you prefer Christian Slater to Mario Van Peebles. Either way, it's middle-class to rich white guys lamenting the dead ends of their lives in drug-o-vision, and I think I might have to sit this one out. Alright, that's not even being close to fair--but there's something off-putting about the combination of the music and the cast of actors looking sad about growing older...

It's been three years since Mark Pellington directed the spiritual dramedy, Henry Poole is Here, about a lonely man who gets more attention than he bargained for when people start seeing of image of Christ on the side of his home. Back in May of this year, we told you that Albert Hughes (Book of Eli) was no longer to direct Warner Bros’ live-action adaptation of the anime cult classic, Akira, originally a graphic novel by Katsuhiro Otomo. Hughes reported left due to “amicable creative differences.” Keanu Reeves, who had been the front-runner to star as Kaneda, had also passed on the project in May.
Now, Variety reports that Warner Bros has tapped Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown, Orphan) to helm the project.
Steve Kloves, (Harry Potter 1-8) has written the latest draft of this live-action Akira. Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta, Albert Torres (Henry Poole is Here), and Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby have also contributed drafts in this development process. With the WB drawing from talent it has worked with successfully before like Kloves and Collet-Serra, it looks like this project is finally getting its legs underneath it.
