At one point Paul is putting on a mask and says "Ain't got no spit," which is the same line Hooper says in Les Dents de la mer (1975) before putting on his mask and entering the cage.
According to stories from fishermen around Baja California, the Black Demon legend has been told from generation to generation. It is told that thousand of fishermen have died facing this creature, due to the fact that their bodies are never found. It is also told that the Black Demon is the killer of hundreds of whales that are found dead along the Pacific Ocean, in what appears to be an attack from a huge beast. It has been seen in the Mar de Cortés too.
Despite the legend there is no scientific evidence to support the black demon tall tale.
