Based on the book of the same name. A memoir written by John "Chick" Donohue and J.T. Molloy about Donohue's eight weeks in Vietnam delivering beer to his friends and other soldiers in combat.
Dylan O'Brien and Viggo Mortensen were originally attached the movie before Apple picked up the movie. They were replaced by Zac Efron and Russell Crowe.
Much is made about Donohue's supposed lack of military experience. In reality, he served in the Philippines and Japan for 6 years, but didn't see any combat.
This is Costume Designer, Bao Tranchi's first Hollywood movie. Tranchi, a Vietnamese-American fashion designer, left her native Vietnam when she was 10 months old, escaping a refugee camp with her family before emigrating to America.
Crazy credits: At the start of the credits, the photo of Chickie (Zac Efron) at LZ Jane is shown next to the real photo of the real Chickie in 1969. There is also a photo of the real Chickie and his four surviving friends today.
