Oscars afterglow: How many of this year’s acting nominees will be back next year?
Image
As we wind down this year’s Oscar season, we at Gold Derby are already looking forward to next year’s. Clearly, we can’t get enough. But next year’s Academy Awards season could also concern this year’s as the Oscars afterglow effect could be in full force. Actors can often garner a quick follow-up nomination after breaking through in the nominations list the year prior. Eddie Redmayne accomplished this when he followed up his 2015 Best Actor win for “The Theory of Everything” with a 2016 Best Actor bid for “The Danish Girl.” Similarly, Octavia Spencer was nominated for Best Supporting Actress two years in a row — in 2017 for “Hidden Figures” and in 2018 for “The Shape of Water.” So, which of these year’s acting nominees could return next year? Let’s take a look.

Best Actor

Bradley Cooper has an exciting project that should be out in time for next year’s Oscars.

This Best Picture Winner Almost Got The Batgirl Treatment
Image
Much has been made about the stunning decision by Warner Bros. Discovery to shelve the 90 million-dollar DC superhero film "Batgirl" ahead of its anticipated debut on HBO Max. As it stands, the newly-minted powers that be at the studio (including CEO David Zaslav) saw fit to use a "purchase accounting" maneuver to write off the movie and not carry the losses in a limited-timeframe tax loophole. While reports on whether the film tested well or not have been mixed, the move stands as a stain on the Warners reputation and will surely put talent off of working with the studio knowing their creative efforts might never see the light of day.

Dumping a film from release permanently is a rare move by major studios, although not unheard of. In 2007 director Beeban Kidron ("Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason") began shooting the British counterculture drama "Hippie Hippie Shake" starring Cillian Murphy...

Jay Underwood, Alex Hyde-White, Michael Bailey Smith, and Rebecca Staab in Les Quatre Fantastiques (1994)
7 unreleased films Hollywood doesn't want you to see: Roger Corman's Fantastic Four to The Day the Clown Cried
Jay Underwood, Alex Hyde-White, Michael Bailey Smith, and Rebecca Staab in Les Quatre Fantastiques (1994)
The Hollywood archives are packed with movies that, for myriad reasons, have somehow slipped between the cracks, never to be heard from again.

No film sums up that unfortunate group more than 1994's The Fantastic Four, a property now getting rebooted for a second time with a lavish budget and inescapable marketing campaign. We look back at seven movies the industry (and the filmmakers behind them) wants to sweep under the carpet.

1. The Fantastic Four

Bernd Eichinger snapped up the film rights to Marvel's first family in the '80s for a pittance, and with the clock ticking down on his ownership he teamed up with B-movie specialist Roger Corman to produce a $1 million picture in less than a month. With a cast of unknowns and music video director Oley Sassone at the helm, The Fantastic Four ended up getting buried by Marvel in a bid for brand protection.

Avi Arad,...

And while she was in the house to plug her new film “American Sniper,” Sienna ended up flashing back to her “Factory Girl” film days with Fallon.

Ms. Miller brought along some photographs from the flick, featuring Fallon’s awkwardly-dyed blonde hair and the two exchanged stories from the project.

Anna Kendrick Says Dylan Kidd's All-Star Comedy 'Get A Job' May Never See The Light Of Day
There's a weird netherworld that movies sometimes fall into, films that were completed, or as good as, but whether because of issues of quality, or because of circumstances outside their control, never saw release in any form, or at best were buried on DVD or VOD somewhere. Jerry Lewis' "The Day The Clown Cried" was a famous example, Kenneth Lonergan's "Margaret" lingered in limbo for six years before release, and more recently, films such as David O Russell's "Nailed" and Sienna Miller/Chris O'Dowd drama "Hippie Hippie Shake" finished principal photography, but never made it to a screen of any kind. And now, there's worrying signs that another film has joined those ranks. A couple of years ago, Dylan Kidd, director of the great "Roger Dodger" and the underrated "P.S," went behind cameras for the first time in nearly a decade with "Get A Job." An ensemble...

Chris O'Dowd: from The It Crowd to Hollywood
Comic hit in The It Crowd and leading man in Bridesmaids, Chris O'Dowd is now pushing at an open door in Hollywood

In January 2009, Chris O'Dowd bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles. By this point, he was best known for his role in the Channel 4 sitcom The It Crowd, written by Graham Linehan (Father Ted, Black Books), and had acted in a few British films of varying quality – the 2005 black comedy Festival, Richard Curtis's The Boat That Rocked, the as yet unreleased Hippie Hippie Shake, co-starring Sienna Miller. It looked increasingly as though O'Dowd might be yet another good actor destined to drift along in roles of middling quality. He'd also just come out of an eight-year relationship. And so he took a risk. He didn't have any "highfalutin ideas", he recalls. But, hey, why not?

The road to Hollywood may be littered with the dashed hopes of actors from overseas,...

The completed movies that appear to have disappeared
Nicolas Cage. John Cusack. Matt Damon. Mel Gibson. Eddie Murphy. Names that have launched many movies to box office glory. Yet, this collection can’t even get released right now…

It's not unusual for a film to be completed and then sit on the shelves for a long time. In some cases, such as with the Al Pacino vehicle 88 Minutes a few years back, it'll eventually get a cinema release some years after the final cut was locked. But in others, a film might linger in the hope of just getting a DVD release somewhere along the line.

However, it's rare when prominent films suffer the same fate. But that's just what's happened with the following movies, which have earned some degree of profile either thanks to the people in them, or the subject matter concerned. In each case, the film itself was seemingly finished, and then hasn't appeared for one reason or another.

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Nine
Shanghai

Opens: 2010

Cast: John Cusack, Gong Li, Ken Watanabe, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chow Yun-Fat

Director: Mikael Hafstrom

Summary: In the months leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, an American man arrives in Shanghai to find his friend recently murdered. In investigating his friend's death, he stumbles upon a secret the United States government has been keeping and falls in love in the process.

Analysis: After being granted permission to shoot in the Chinese city, the $10 million production found its permit quickly being revoked by the Government who expressed concerns about the script. The result is Bangkok and the United Kingdom standing in for the real Shanghai which seems kind of against the entire point.

Cusack himself has emphatically endorsed the project in interviews, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", but being stuck at the cash-strapped Weinstein Company means that its release plans are unsure beyond a vague promise of a limited bow around Easter.

Summary: Sent to prison, Malik El Djebena falls under the sway of a group of Corsicans who enforce their rule in the prison. As the 'missions' go by, he toughens himself and wins their confidence but uses his intelligence to discreetly develop his own network.

Analysis: Finally scoring a limited release in the Us in February, Jacques Audiard's violent and hard-edged prison drama won the Grand Prix at Cannes, scored Best Film at the London Film Festival, and is already the hotly tipped favourite to take the Oscar for Best Foreign Film late next month.

Reviews have been stellar around the world for the film which quickly became the most universally admired entry in the often hotly contentious first week of Cannes back in May. From a breakout performance by Tahar Rahim,...

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven
Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not...

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five
Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence...

Miller's New Movie In Chaos
Sienna Miller
The future of Sienna Miller's upcoming movie Hippie Hippie Shake has been thrown into jeopardy after the director quit the project in its post-production stage.

The British actress shot her role in the film in 2007 and the movie is slated for release later this year.

But the picture has hit trouble in the editing suite, with director Beeban Kidron walking away from the project over alleged "creative differences".

The shock departure follows the recent exit of Kidron's screenwriter husband Lee Hall.

A source tells British newspaper The Sun, "Producers had wanted to shoot certain scenes but it proved difficult to fit them around Sienna's schedule. Now it won't make it to the big screen until 2010."

The film, based on the memoirs of Australian magazine editor Richard Neville, also stars Irish actor Cillian Murphy.

"A photographer snuck onto the set and hid in a bush all night and got photos of me naked and put it on the cover of the News (more)...

I was having to pay people to see my movies!" the actress tells Nylon magazine in its August issue. "If you want to make amazing, artistic films, you've got to have some sort of box office credibility, which I don't have." Yet, Miller remains a favorite among paparazzi.

Hugh Bonneville on case for 'Legally Mad'
Hugh Bonneville
Hugh Bonneville has been tapped to star opposite Charity Wakefield in "Legally Mad," David E. Kelley's new legal drama for NBC.

The Warner Bros. TV-produced project centers on Brady Hamm (Wakefield), a twentysomething woman who takes a job at her father's law firm.

Bonneville will play the father, Gordon.

"Gordon Hamm is based on the true story of a real-life attorney who lives in my head," Kelley said. "Sharp litigator, a lot of fun and, deep down, a mess."

Kelley called the casting of Bonneville "a terrific coup."

"Hugh is one of the most versatile actors working today," he said.

The British actor, who earned a BAFTA nom for the 2001 film "Iris," starred in the HBO/BBC miniseries "Five Days" and "Tsunami: The Aftermath." His upcoming features include "Hippie Hippie Shake" and "French Film."

Bonneville is repped by UTA and U.K. agent Donna French.

Sienna Miller Settles With The Paparazzi
Labeled a "slut" and a "homewrecker" after paparazzi spread pictures of her frolicking topless on an Italian beach with married beau Balthazar Getty, actress Sienna Miller struck back in June of this year, slapping the English paparazzi agency Big Pictures with a lawsuit citing "substantial harm, fear and enormous distress."Having been awarded a $55,000 settlement last December after successfully suing English tabloids The Sun and News of the World for publishing nude pictures of her taken on the set of the movie "Hippie Hippie Shake," Miller scored her second coup this week after settling with Big Pictures to the tune of ...
