Stephen King’s Cujo is set to be adapted by Netflix, potentially with Darren Aronofsky as the director. The 1981 novel tells a chilling story about a mother and her son surrounded by horror, with their chances of survival growing dim as the plot unfolds. With Aronofsky in discussions with Netflix, this classic tale will soon come to life on screen.

Aronofsky’s knack for crafting psychological thrillers throughout his career and Netflix’s obsession with adapting Stephen King’s work sound like a match made in heaven. For those who have been waiting for a horror tale, Cujo will serve it right into their plates, evoking all sorts of harrowing emotions one might not be prepared for. This will also mark Aronofsky’s first feature on a streaming platform.

Netflix picked up the rights to Stephen King's 1981 novel Cujo and is currently developing a new adaptation. Now, The Hollywood Reporter says acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky—best known for Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, Mother!, and The Whale—is circling the project.
The 1983 version directed by Lewis Teague was a modest box office success despite garnering mixed reviews. In the decades since, Cujo has become a cult classic, with many praising the central performance from Dee Wallace who plays a desperate mother trying to protect her son from Cujo's wrath.
The poor St. Bernard starts out as your typical happy-go-lucky dog until he gets bitten by a rabid bat and turns feral. One of the film's most famous scenes is the climactic car showdown toward the end, when Cujo is frantically trying to break into Donna's (Wallace) vehicle as she hides inside it with her son. As...

We found out last week that a new take on Stephen King's killer dog novel, Cujo, is in the works for Netflix, and the project may have nabbed a somewhat surprising director.
According to Jeff Sneider in his latest newsletter (and since backed up by THR), Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to helm the movie.
Though some would consider this the filmmaker's first foray into the horror genre, that's certainly debatable. Aronofsky has included horror elements in a number of his previous films, and many would view the likes of Mother!, Black Swan, and even Requiem for a Dream to be full-on horror movies.
King's novel focuses on a mother and her young seizer-prone son being terrorized by a huge St. Bernard who becomes a rabid killing machine after being bitten by a bat.

Netflix's adaptation of Stephen King's Cujo takes another step forward, with an Oscar-nominated director reportedly a top contender to helm the upcoming film. Released in 1981, King's novel of the same tells the story of a sweet St. Bernard family pet who becomes a violent killing machine after contracting rabies from a bat, trapping a mother and her son inside a broken-down vehicle outside a mechanic's shop. Cujo was adapted into a movie in 1983 from director Lewis Teague, and it was announced last week that another take on the novel is now in the works at Netflix.
THR now reports that Darren Aronofsky is in talks to direct Cujo for Netflix, with Roy Lee producing. Darren Aronofsky is going to the dogs. Or maybe just one particular dog.
The acclaimed filmmaker, whose resume ranges from Requiem for a Dream to Black Swan to The Whale, is in talks to direct Netflix’s adaptation of Stephen King novel Cujo.
The feature project was only revealed last week, but it’s clearly further along than known or moving on the fast track.
Roy Lee, who established his King bonafides with the two It movies, Salem’s Lot, and the upcoming dystopian thriller The Long Walk, is producing. There is no writer yet on the project, but Aronofsky is expected to meet with candidates soon.

There have been rumblings of a remake of the classic Stephen King adaptation Cujo for a long time – in fact, one was officially announced way back in 2013. In 2015, we heard that the remake had taken an unexpected turn, reimagining the name Cujo as an acronym that stood for Canine Unit Joint Operations. That project seemed to be scrapped when King got the rights to the story back in 2017… But last week, we learned that the Cujo remake has found a new home: the Netflix streaming service. And now, industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider reports that a director might be close to signing on to the project, as Darren Aronofsky is said to be in negotiations to take the helm.
Aronofsky’s previous directorial efforts include Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, The Wrestler, Black Swan, Noah, mother!, and The Whale.

Movies frequently use novels as source material. When authors create rich, vibrant stories inside their pages, it's hard not to want to see them played out on the big screen. Countless fairy tales, children's books, dramas and romance novels eventually become films. For horror movie fans, they can also see their favorite books turned into fantastically scary movies.
Sometimes, a reader's imagination is a lot scarier than that of a movie adaptation. These horror books may have been adapted into entertaining, beloved movies, but they are still worth reading because of the frights they deliver. Horror fans will be missing out if they don't add these terrifying novels to their Tbr lists.
Updated on March 11, 2025, by Robert Vaux: Horror novels provide easy name recognition and a built-in audience. Hollywood has no shortage of horror movie adaptations that can't quite match the terrors evoked by their source material. The article is updated with five new entries,...

When it comes to authors who have had their works adapted into major feature films, Stephen King has few equals. 1976's Carrie from director Brian De Palma marks the first of the author's works to get the big-screen treatment, and it paved the way for dozens more in the decades that followed. Stanbley Kubrick's The Shining was released in 1980 and now stands as one of the most iconic and beloved adaptations of King's work, even if the author himself infamously doesn't care for it.
Rob Reiner's Stand By Me hit theaters in 1986, marking the first non-horror King adaptation. It would ultimately be followed by movies like The Running Man (1987), Misery (1990), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and The Green Mile (1999). More than two decades later, new King movies continue to release at a regular cadence, including titles like Gerald's Game (2017), Pet Sematary (2019), Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022), The Boogeyman (2023), and Salem's Lot (2024). Stephen King's presence in the cultural milieu never fully went away, but he is making a bit of a comeback from dipping in popularity. At least, as far as consistent adaptations of his work. That is completely changing currently and will continue to do so.
In 2024, Max put out a series based on King's novel, Salem's Lot. It was not perfect, but at least it tried to stick to what the author had produced. Taking a book and making it into a full series is tricky. A film adaptation would have probably been the wiser choice.
The Monkey, based on a short story by King, was a recent theatrical release. Amazon MGM Studios and the fantastic Mike Flanagan are currently working on an adaptation of Carrie. Edgar Wright is working with star Glen Powell on a new edition of The Running Man, and projects for It sequel Welcome to Derry,...

A Top Gun: Maverick star has joined Sally Field in Netflix's adaptation of a New York Times best-selling novel, Remarkably Bright Creatures. Written by Shelby Van Pelt, the 2022 novel follows a lonely elderly widow named Tova working as a janitor at an aquarium who forms a friendship with a Giant Pacific octopus. Netflix's film adaptation of Remarkably Bright Creatures was first announced in August 2024, with the two-time Oscar-winner Sally Field starring in the lead role as Tova and Olivia Newman (Where the Crawdads Sing) directing.
Now, Netflix's film adaptation is fleshing out its cast. Per Netflix, Lewis Pullman has joined Netflix's adaptation of Remarkably Bright Creatures. It's unknown what role he will be playing, though Pullman will be "co-starring" alongside Sally Field. Also joining the cast are Colm Meaney, Joan Chen, Kathy Baker, Beth Grant, and Sofia Black D'Elia in undisclosed roles. The film is now shooting in Vancouver.

You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home. Ryan Coogler’s (Creed, Black Panther) Sinners is headed to theaters in just about a month from Warner Bros., and the vampire movie has officially received its “R” rating from the MPA this week.
Sinners is rated “R” for “Strong bloody violence, sexual content and language.”
Michael B. Jordan plays dual roles in Sinners, which Warner Bros. is describing as “a new vision of fear from Ryan Coogler.” The film will be unleashed in theaters on April 18, 2025.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for Sinners, which is said to be “genre fluid,” with sources of inspiration including From Dusk Till Dawn, The Faculty, Salem’s Lot, and John Carpenter.
“Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

Netflix has given a green light to a movie reboot of the Stephen King novel Cujo, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Roy Lee will produce the remake of the horror story about a mother and son who fight off a rabid dog while trapped in their car. Cujo was first adapted from King’s 1981 psychological horror novel of the same name where Cujo is at first a lovable St. Bernard, but after being bitten by a bat becomes everyone’s worst enemy.
In the 1983 film Cujo, a mother, Donna (Dee Wallace), and her son, Tad (Danny Pintauro) come into contact with Cujo and must fight for their lives. King’s novels, starting with 1976’s Carrie, have long been picked up by Hollywood for movie adaptations.

Netflix is preparing to make another Stephen King adaptation! According to a new Deadline exclusive, the streamer has finalized a deal to adapt King's novel Cujo into a new feature film with Roy Lee set to produce.
Lee is a well-known horror movie producer, having produced hit movies like Barbarian, Strange Darling, Companion, The Ring, and more. He's also producing the upcoming films Weapons and Until Dawn. But most notably, Lee has produced multiple King projects such as Doctor Sleep, Salem's Lot, It, It: Chapter Two, and The Stand. And Netflix has released a few adaptations, too, between Gerald's Game, 1922, and In the Tall Grass, so Lee and Netflix working together makes a lot of sense.
First published in 1981, Cujo is King's novel about a once sweet Saint Bernard who gets bit by a bat and turns rabid. From there, the massive animal goes on a rampage, killing multiple people throughout the book.

A remake of Stephen King’s “Cujo” is in the works at Netflix, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
Roy Lee (“Barbarian”) will produce “Cujo,” which is currently out to writers.
King’s original 1981 novel centers on a mother and son, who are trapped in a hot car, being terrorized by a rabid 200-lbs. St. Bernard. As time ticks on, it becomes clear that they will die unless they do something.
A 1983 film adaptation was directed by Lewis Teague and starred Dee Wallace, Daniel Hugh Kelly and Danny Pintauro.
King is one of the most prolific American writers of his generation. He has penned more than 65 novels, and published countless short stories. His bibliography is a gold mine of horror, sci-fi and everything in between.
Most recently, a remake of “Salem’s Lot” was released on Max. In his review of the film, TheWrap’s William Bibbiani wrote,...

Osgood Perkins, the visionary filmmaker behind last year’s creepy-as-hell “Longlegs,” still remembers the first time he was exposed to Stephen King’s macabre world.
He was a kid and his parents (actor Anthony Perkins and actress Berry Berenson) had left him with a babysitter. He crept downstairs and what he saw horrified and delighted him. It was “Salem’s Lot,” the 1979 CBS miniseries by “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” auteur Tobe Hooper, based on King’s beloved 1975 novel. He vividly remembers – still – the little vampire kid floating outside the window.
And now, with “The Monkey,” his adaptation of King’s 1980 short story (collected in “Skeleton Crew” in 1985), Perkins has made something that will traumatize an entirely new generation of curious kids with sleepy babysitters.
Perkins said that James Wan, the director of “The Conjuring” and “Saw,” and his producing partner at Atomic Monster, had held the rights to the story for a long time.

It is not uncommon for movie adaptations to change elements of the book in order to give audiences a more visually compelling experience. In other instances, writers and directors have to change elements from the book due to rights and ownership of specific concepts or properties. These changes can work out really well, or sometimes they can have a negative effect on the audience. In most cases, adaptations will already have a large following of fans and those fans will expect the adaptation of their favorite books or comics or games to adhere to the original vision of the source material.
In the case of The Monkey, there isn't as big of a following because even though it is based on a Stephen King work, it is based on an obscure Stephen King short story as opposed to one of his all-time bestsellers. In The Monkey, writer/director Osgood Perkins...

The release of The Monkey marks a continuation of Stephen King's long and weird film career. Directed by Osgood Perkins, the film reaches far back into King's past for material, now joining the ranks of other King adaptations like Carrie, The Running Man, and The Shining. However, as it turns out, Perkins isn't the first to bring this supposedly untouched short story to life. Kudos to you X-File fanatics who recall the episode “Chinga” in 1998, which used this same plot.
As part of a special series in Season 5, creator Chris Carter recruited some ringers to guest write. The result was an unofficial adaptation of King’s 1980 short story, “The Monkey,” swapping out the cymbal-clutching monkey for a creepy, haunted, Victorian Doll. Perhaps for legal reasons, the story was modified, concealing the origins. But enough of the core elements remain to trace the provenance of "Chinga." That short story is...

Update: Stephen King clarified via Bluesky that he is not writing for Mike Flanagan’s The Dark Tower series.
Stephen King is writing for Mike Flanagan‘s adaptation of his magnum opus, The Dark Tower.
“All I can say is it’s happening,” King revealed at IGN Fan Fest when asked if he’d be interested in contributing new material to the adaptation.
“I am writing stuff now and I think that’s all I want to say, because the next thing you know I’ll stir up a bunch of stuff I don’t necessarily want to stir up yet. I’m in process right now, and to say too much feels like a jinx.”
King previously wrote a new coda for The Stand miniseries in 2020.

Let’s be honest Longlegs was a disappointment. Although it did contain a great central performance from Maika Monroe, it’s supernatural storyline owed much too much to many far better films. Added to this, the marketing campaign – which hyped it beyond belief – set audience expectations far higher than anyone could achieve.
That said, the film did extremely well at cinemas across the land, propelling its writer and director into the limelight and as my review said “all we can hope is going forwards, Osgood Perkins uses the new found fame and commercial footing to indulge his more interesting and unconventional horror ideas.”
On the face of it, adapting a Stephen King story is neither interesting nor unconventional. With a career spanning over 50 years, King’s works have been remade by multiple directors inciting fear on screens large and small for centuries, from Carrie to Misery, The Lawnmower Man to The Shawshank Redemption,...

Osgood "Oz" Perkins, the director in charge of the upcoming Stephen King film The Monkey, has revealed some of his favorite works by the author behind titles like It, The Shining and Salem's Lot. Perkins is the latest Hollywood visionary to bring one of King's works to the big screen. Early reviews showed that The Monkey is a winner in the pantheon of King's horror adaptations.
Per Bloody Disgusting, the director behind films like Longlegs and The Blackcoat's Daughter said this about adapting a work by "one of the great American authors. I suppose the unique challenge in adapting a Stephen King story is parsing out 'Oh, it’s the greatest author of all time in the genre, one of the great American authors of all time,' and sort of letting that aspect not become daunting. Since the publication of "Carrie" in 1974, Stephen King's been a consistent hot topic in horror circles. This slim saga of a girl tormented past the point of ever using her telekinetic powers for good landed like a bang, and from the start savvy readers could spot the influences King grew up with. Stories of dangerous mental abilities, vampires, and self-devouring societies quickly point to a childhood of wonderful pulp sci fi and horror, from cheapie Vincent Price classics to the works of "Twilight Zone" veteran writer, Richard Matheson.
It's an all consuming love for both the joy and goopy scares of the horror genre, but more visceral horror sometimes colors his work, too. The vague memories of a four year old King shape "The Body," as one of his friends was killed by a train, and it's not just his magnum opus, "The Dark Tower" that relived King's personal...

Since the publication of "Carrie" in 1974, Stephen King has knocked out over 60 books (which have been turned into 59 movies). That's better than a book-per-year pace, which is doubly impressive considering that he's still, at the age of 77, the United States' most prominent author of fiction. Every book isn't necessarily a winner, but he delivers the spine-tingling goods frequently enough to keep his massive fanbase happy.
Though he's still regularly acquiring new fans thanks in large part to the timelessness of novels like "The Shining," "It," and "Pet Sematary," his longtime readers are, in some cases, more than just fans. They're collectors. And they guard their early purchases fiercely due to a combination of sentimental value and actual monetary value — because depending on how early you started buying King's books, you might have some immensely valuable volumes resting on your shelf or stashed away in storage. Stephen King is one of the most respected storytellers of his — or any — generation. The word prolific hardly covers the man's output, from his earliest works like "Salem's Lot" to more recent masterpieces such as "Revival." For decades now, King's works have inspired dozens of movies and TV shows of varying quality. In all of those years, King directed just one of those movies himself in the form of "Maximum Overdrive," a truly bonkers piece of cinema with a wild story behind it. At least one small part of that story involves none other than David Lynch.
King recently appeared as a guest on "The Kingcast" and discussed the film. Released in the summer of '86, the film was based on the short story "Trucks" from the short story collection "Night Shift." It picks up after a strange comet passes by Earth,...

Bill Murray (Space Jam) and Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live) are two gangsters who need to get their s*** together in the official trailer for Riff Raff. The latest film to come from Critical Thinking and The Clapper helmer, Dito Montiel, is a star-studded production that’s overflowing with some of the biggest names in the industry, all joining forces for a unique comedy crime drama. While you may be intrigued by the involvement of Davidson, Gabrielle Union (Bring It On), Ed Harris (Love Lies Bleeding) and Lewis Pullman (Salem’s Lot), the trailer makes it obvious that Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus) is really the star of the show — or, movie rather. Set for a theatrical arrival on February 28, the Lionsgate film appears to be another money-maker for the studio.

One of the greatest horror authors ever is Stephen King. There isn't a catalog of work quite like King's, where he continues to push the imagination to new limits with each and every book he writes. In the middle of all his classic horror stories is also one of the best science fiction/fantasy book series ever, The Dark Tower. Stephen King is truly a master storyteller, and he continues to entertain his readers still to this day. For over fifty years now, King has brought new ideas to the horror genre.
When considering what his best works are, it becomes difficult to determine. For die-hard fans of the author's work, there are times when some books are higher on the list than others. The titles can be very interchangeable depending on what kind of mood the reader might be in. However, many of King's works are classics like The Stand and Carrie,...

Ryan Coogler is one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. He's the rare writer/director who actually managed to make the jump from doing small independent movies to tackling massive blockbuster franchises without losing his style. Quite the contrary, in an era where the pipeline of Sundance darling to pawn in a superhero or big franchise machine has all but ruined the future of many a once-promising filmmaker, Coogler gave us not one but two exciting creative-driven properties.
First, he revitalized the "Rocky" franchise with the phenomenal "Creed," one of the best movies of the century and a nuanced and thrilling exploration of nature and nurture, with boxing thrown in for good measure. Coogler's legacy sequel approach worked wonders, kickstarting a trilogy, allowing Sylvester Stallone to do his best work in the franchise, and making Michael B. Jordan a star.
Next, Coogler went even bigger with "Black Panther" and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

It's been 12 years since Ryan Coogler made his startlingly assured feature filmmaking debut with "Fruitvale Station," but he still feels like an unknown quantity as an artist. We know from "Creed" and "Black Panther" that he's got a knack for imbuing franchise movies with uncommon heart, and no shortage of swagger when it comes to staging dynamite action set pieces. But due to circumstances beyond his control (the death of Chadwick Boseman and the Covid-19 pandemic), he's only made one movie over the last seven years. That's a lot of time for a still-young filmmaker (he's 38) to sit on the sidelines, especially one whose oeuvre is curiously light on original movies.
That's not a knock on Coogler at all. Christopher Nolan directed a remake ("Insomnia") and three Batman movies en route to becoming the most prominent and praised studio filmmaker on the planet, so Coogler is in excellent company. But...

From Fruitvale Station to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ryan Coogler has established himself as one of the most vital voices in filmmaking over the past 12 years, and now he's stepping into the world of horror with his latest film, Sinners. Ahead of the movie's April 18th release in theaters, Warner Bros. revealed a new trailer for Sinners that sinks its teeth into visceral scares and unveils the vampiric side of its chilling and emotional story.

My maternal grandfather is from Mississippi. And my uncle James, who passed away while I was finishing up Creed, was also from Mississippi. And it was a place I had never been. My maternal grandfather passed before I was born.

Stephen King has written about 65 books at this point, and by the time you finish reading this article, it'll probably be 66. Not all of them are winners, but he's batting at such a high average that it's hard to complain. The only problem is that it's a little intimidating for first-time readers to decide where to start with him. Do you go in chronological order, or should you go by whichever book's premise catches your eye the most? And what if your goal is to get as good an idea of King's whole schtick in as little time as possible? If you could only read five books to try to get the widest understanding of Stephen King, what should you pick?
That's a tough question, given King's stories hold a wide range of lengths, tones, and genres, but I'll be answering it anyway. Here's my curated list of five introductory Stephen King books,...

While the cinematic and televised realms of Stephen King are both old hat and as constant and unchanging as death and taxes now, it wasn’t always this way. Sure, he had movies hitting the theater pretty consistently all through the late 70s through, well, still today, but TV was a different story altogether. Salem’s Lot came out in 1979, and it was a big hit in both viewership numbers and critical appraisal but that was it for a while. We would even get that strange and wonderful Larry Cohen sequel to Salem’s Lot before we would get another King TV series. Once It hit screens over a weekend though, the flood gates would be opened with The Tommyknockers, The Stand, The Langoliers, and many other including actual TV shows. It would remain incredibly popular and fond in our memories but is It any good 35 years later or is It just...

Every genre has positives and negatives that give viewers ample opportunities to have engaging, interesting discussions. Horror has a wide range of sub-genres that pair well with different themes and tones fitting to the nuances of the genre, making it entertaining for many different viewers. However, the complexities of horror also cause a great deal of controversy that makes the fanbase just as pleasant as daunting.
Even successful films from this year, including Late Night With the Devil, Oddity, and The Substance, are the subject of contempt for many viewers, each offering their own reason why certain films don't meet expectations. This conflicting reception to inclusions in the genre has to do with the complexities of fan's expectations and industry trends, which highlight the harsh realities of being a fan of horror.

There have been a lot of movies and TV shows based on the works of author Stephen King, but there are also still a good number of King stories that have slipped through the cracks and never received an adaptation. For example, the short story The Monkey has been around for over forty years, but it’s only just now getting the big screen treatment, with Neon planning to give a film based on The Monkey a theatrical release on February 21, 2025. With that date just a few months away, we figured this would be a good time for us to put together a list of Everything We Know About The Monkey.
Story

Larry Cohen isn’t really a horror guy, at least not in the same vein as his contemporary filmmakers like Wes Craven, John Carpenter, or Tobe Hooper. Cohen wasn’t even really the same type of director as he wrote almost 3 times as many projects as he directed. What he lacked in quantity for horror movies though, he more than made up for in quality. This quality started with 1974’s It’s Alive and moved through very different types of horror like God Told Me To, The Stuff, and Q the Winged Serpent. The only series of movies he was involved in was his trilogy of It’s Alive movies. While the first two were heavy hitters in terms of themes that were hidden under the guise of creature features, the third one had far less to say but is unfairly seen as less fun. 1987 was a weird year for the man,...

“Every night, somebody new is trying to kill us.” The Until Dawn video game gets a time loop twist in the upcoming movie adaptation from Sony Pictures, and the trailer has arrived.
From director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle Creation, Shazam) and writer Gary Dauberman (It, The Nun), Until Dawn arrives in theaters on April 25, 2025.
The upcoming movie will have a similar mechanic to the choose-your-own-adventure style of the video game, a unique way to bring the experience to life on the big screen. We’ve been told not to expect a 1:1 adaptation of the fan favorite video game, but it looks like Sandberg and company made sure their Until Dawn movie has that video game feel to it all the same.
Think Until Dawn meets… The Cabin in the Woods.

The Monkey director Osgood Perkins has confirmed just how violent the upcoming Stephen King adaptation will be, teasing expectations for the horror-comedy. The Monkey's story focuses on twin brothers, Hal and Bill (Theo James), who are forced to confront a toy monkey whose curse causes someone to die every time it bangs its cymbals together. Unlike Perkins' previous film, Longlegs, hailed for its slow-burn terror, the King adaptation is a horror-comedy, expected to utilize wild deaths as part of its funny moments. This gives it a very different tone to the director's prior work.
Speaking with Empire, Perkins revealed The Monkey's death sequences will include a lot of blood, with plenty of over-the-top, gory kills to compliment its horror-comedy elements. The director explained how some deaths would involve more blood than is possible for a person to have in their body, hyping a "Rube Goldbergian connectivity" to the set-pieces. He...
