Kieran Turner, a documentary filmmaker who created the web series “Wallflowers,” died Dec. 23 in West Hollywood. He was 56.

Turner’s death after a battle with cancer was confirmed by Christy Grosz, president of CLG3 Communications.

In addition to creating “Wallflowers,” Turner wrote and produced the online web series which ran for two seasons from 2013 to 2014 and followed four friends who join a support group to help them get dates. The show starred Gibson Frazier, Sarah Saltzberg, Christianne Tisdale, Susan Louise O’Connor and Ricky Dunlop and is now streaming on Dekkoo.

Through his independent production company Eight Track Tape Productions, which works in both film and television, Turner directed and produced the documentary “Jobriath A.D.” about the ‘70s glam rock musician who died of AIDS. The production company specializes in telling LGBTQ+ related stories both fictional and non-fictional.

Ahead of Insidious: The Red Door releasing in theaters next month, James Wan and Patrick Wilson took part in an Ask-Me-Anything session over on Reddit last week. During the chat, Wan and Wilson answered various questions from fans about the Insidious franchise and beyond, but one answer from Wan in particular really caught our attention.

When asked if he has any dream project that he hopes to someday bring to life, James Wan brought up The Call of Cthulhu, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic short story.

Of particular note, it sounds like Wan has already been low-key toying with a potential adaptation of Lovecraft’s tale, which was first published in Weird Tales in February 1928.

Wan teases during the Reddit Ama chat, “My dream project, that I have been secretly cooking away on the down low for the last 5 years, is The Call of Cthulhu.”

When you think of actors playing comic book characters, your mind tends to instantly jump to the ones that played the same role for a number of years that have become inextricably linked with the part, like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine or Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. However, more than a few names have dabbled in the genre multiple times, and it isn’t exactly surprising that the results were more than a little hit-or-miss.

Brandon Routh is still best known for playing the title hero in Superman Returns, which he would eventually reprise in the Arrowverse’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” despite already having starred as Legends of Tomorrow’s Ray Palmer. Outside of the world of DC though, he also played a supporting role in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and took the lead in 2011’s forgotten box office bomb Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.

“Aquaman” director James Wan’s Atomic Monster is teaming up with prominent Italian comics publisher Sergio Bonelli Editore to co-produce an English-language TV series based on cult horror comic “Dylan Dog.

Bonelli’s “Dylan Dog” property is being developed as a 10-episode live-action series based on Tiziano Sclavi’s popular franchise chronicling the exploits of its titular British paranormal investigator, who with his sidekick Grouch, a Marx impersonator, takes on cases that usually involve monsters, ghosts, vampires, werewolves and zombies.

The 33-year-old comic book series, published in the U.S. by Dark Horse Comics, boasts more than 500 installments and sales of more than 50 million copies worldwide.

Bonelli branched out into production a year ago with a dedicated arm called Bonelli Entertainment that was set up to give them a hands-on role. They bought back the rights to “Dylan Dog” which in 2011 was adapted by Hollywood indie Hyde Park Entertainment into...

Things went from bad to worse for Dark Phoenix over the weekend. Much, much worse. The latest X-Men movie, which is set to be the final one in this particular version of the franchise, entered its second weekend of release with a pack of newcomers such as Men In Black: International and Shaft. That, coupled with bad buzz has led to a disastrous second weekend take at the box office, marking one of the biggest drop-offs in superhero movie history, and certainly the biggest ever in the modern era. The movie could fare even worse than Fox's maligned Fantastic Four reboot. As such, Dark Phoenix is going to lose a whole bunch of money, likely more than $100 million, for the studio.

Per weekend box office estimates, Dark Phoenix dropped a staggering 72.6 percent week-to-week, bringing in just $9 million. On its opening weekend, it made an unimpressive $33 million. Things have gone from bad to cataclysmic.

Leading Italian comics publisher Sergio Bonelli Editore is branching out into TV production with plans to make an English-language show based on cult horror series “Dylan Dog,” plus other projects based on its properties, which are distributed in 35 countries.

Bonelli’s long-expected move into production, with a dedicated arm called Bonelli Entertainment, unlocks its expandable comics universe for a wide range of adaptations, but comes with the key proviso that the company wants to “be in charge,” following some “bad experiences,” said development chief Vincenzo Sarno. A 2011 Hollywood indie movie adaptation, “Dylan Dog: Dead of Night,” bombed at the box office.

Sarno said the company is in talks with prospective Italian and international partners, including global streaming services, on its new projects.

Am I destined for greatness, to save the world or even the whole galaxy even if I am a foolhardy, thoughtless, unfocused screwup with almost nothing to my name but maybe some undisciplined smarts and outsized aspirations to grandeur?...

It's been quite some time since we've seen any footage from Ratchet & Clank, with our last glimpse coming with the second trailer released way back in October. Now that we're getting closer and closer to the April 29 release, Playstation Nation has unveiled two new TV spots, which showcases the transforming powers of a weapon known as 'The Sheepinator.' As you might have guessed, this crazy ray gun turns its targets into sheep. We're not quite sure how exactly that's useful, but The Sheepinator was a popular weapon used in the Playstation video game series this animated movie is based on.

Way back in 2013, the first trailer arrived from the highly-anticipated video game adaptation Ratchet & Clank, although it didn't feature any actual footage, serving as somewhat of a parody of the movie itself. Today, Apple has released the first full trailer with our first true look at this adaptation, which features voice actors James Arnold Taylor and David Kaye reprising their roles as the title characters from this hit video game, which shows how this lovable "lombax" and his robot friend first meet. We also get a glimpse at the nefarious villain, Chairman Drek, voiced by Paul Giamatti.

Hugh Jackman has played Logan aka Wolverine in seven different films. It’s an impressive number that will shortly increase with a third solo Wolverine film and possibly X-Men:Apocalypse, although at the time of writing he has yet to be officially cast. A few other names are snapping at the heels of Jackman, notably the cast of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Earlier this month, Marvel picked Scott Derrickson as the director of Doctor Strange. The project about a neurosurgeon turned sorcerer and protecter of Earth is wasting no time picking up steam, as Marvel has announced the writer they want to craft the Doctor’s first big screen adventure.

According to Deadline, Marvel has set their sights on Jon Spaihts to work on the screenplay for Doctor Strange. A first draft of the movie’s screenplay, written by Thomas Dean Donnelly (Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, Sahara) and Joshua Oppenheimer (Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, Sahara), already exists. It’s likely that Spaihts would be brought on to do a script re-write. Spaihts has some key recent writing credits: he wrote The Mummy reboot for Universal and was the first writer to work on the Prometheus screenplay. Utero is a character-driven story that is structured in a similar fashion of the horror films of yesteryear, and follows an agoraphobic unwed mother, played by Jessica Cameron (pictured above on set), who finds her psyche unraveling as she becomes convinced that her unborn child is more monster than human.

Director/writer Coyne had this to say about the movie:

“Shooting Utero was a dream come true for me. Like any filmmaking experience it was a grandiose challenge. But the commitment of our crew and cast, a wonderful commune of pure artists, helped me achieve something astoundingly effective. I can’t wait for this film to be seen.”

I was able to see Odd Thomas well before its Blu-ray debut, thanks to friends on the festival circuit that granted me access to a private screener. I wasn’t even aware of the film, honestly, until my friend Kevin from Screen-Connections mentioned it to me. He also clued me in on the legal hell that the movie had been experiencing, and the fact that it was unlikely that it would be released anytime soon, if ever. Cut forward to October of 2013 and the film was playing Toronto After Dark, and other festivals. Shortly thereafter, the film was picked up for home video distribution Via Image Entertainment, and now we have a nice shiny Blu-ray of this great little movie. Will Cory Monteith sing for a pair of narcotics detectives? We'll have to wait and see.

The "Glee" star is going to get to play the bad guy as he's been booked for the old-school cop thriller, "McCanick," according to Variety.

"McCanick" stars David Morse as Eugene 'Mack' McCanick, a narc who gets caught up in a web of paranoia and violence after a young criminal (Monteith) is released from prison. Over the course of a day, McCanick and his partner (Brandon Routh) track down the ex-con, who holds the key to something dark and nasty from McCanick's past.

The film is being described as a throwback to the gritty cop thrillers of the '70s such as "Dirty Harry" and "The French Connection" as it tells its mythic character-driven tale of revenge and obsession.

First of all, this sounds awesome. Second of all, bonus points for casting Finn Hudson from "Glee" as the villain.

Elevator based thrills ensue in Stig Svendsen's 'Elevator' (of course!) when a group of strangers trapped in a lift try to uncover which one of them is concealing a bomb. Director Svendsen shoots from a script penned by 'December Boys' scribe Marc Rosenberg and Inception Media Group is releasing it onto DVD from 21 August in the Us. Brandon Routh is one of those actors who shot up the ladder of fame thanks to Superman Returns. In Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, he's a sleuth, another comic-book hero, who tries to be slicker than oil. The movie is just as good as The Spirit, and both are catering to a very select market. There is nothing like an outstanding short film. You get all the perks of a feature without having to dedicate two hours to the thing. And BenDavid Grabinski has a star-studded short for you entitled Cost of Living.

Starring no less than Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Dylan Dog: Dead of Night) and Bret Harrison ("V," "Reaper" and "Breaking In"), Cost of Living is a cool look at the day-to-day life of a pair of security guards who are just about fed up with their current positions.

Wow, we're already a month into 2012. Can you believe it? Hell, it seems like yesterday when we were looking forward to the New Year. Now, we're already 1/12 of the way done with it! Despite how fast it feels at the current moment, years are actually pretty damn long. Because of this, it's pretty easy to forgot about mediocre films. A year after the fact, I always gawk in amazement that certain films came out the year previously. It seemed like such a long time ago, yet it's only been twelve months. Below is fifteen of these films, the unsung losers of 2011. They may not be bad...but they are certainly forgetable.

Season of the Witch

This Nicolas Cage disaster began the year of 2011 with a whimper. Other than Ron Perlman head butting a demon (which should be in every movie, btw), no one can remember a damn thing about this film.

A new character featurette has been released online that focuses on Snow, the cynical, ascerbic, wrongly-convicted anti-hero played by Guy Pearce at the center of Lock-Out — or Ms One: Maximum Security, as it's called in France — the new sci-fi movie co-written (with first-time feature co-directors James Mather and Stephen St. Leger) and produced by Luc Besson (The Transporter, Columbiana) that takes place in a prison orbiting the earth.

When the president's daughter (Maggie Grace) gets trapped aboard the prison following a riot, Snow is offered his freedom in exchange for her safe return. Of course, the chances of Snow safely infiltrating the orbiting prison, fending off the deadliest-of-deadly inmates who now have the run of the prison, and finding the president's daughter are slim-to-none, but those are just the kind of odds that a "badass" like Snow can get behind. In fact, compared to his incarceration, he considers the job a "dream vacaction.

This year has seen a fair number of superhero films and other comic book adaptations on the big screen, including two sparkly new releases from Marvel and a reinvigoration of the X-Men franchise that surprised many jaded fans.

But which were the heroes and which were the zeros? Here we take a look back at this year's releases and check out the facts and figures for each one.

The year began with The Green Hornet, a crimefighter who originated in 1930s radio serials before moving into film serials, TV and comics.

After a couple of other studios had earlier attempted to get a new movie off the ground, Sony delivered its action-comedy take with Seth Rogen in the title role, Asian pop star Jay Chou as sidekick Kato and Michel Gondry directing.

The end result was a lot of fun, though with too much of Rogen's dorky comedy, too many...

Of course, while most critics make a point to try to seek out the allegedly best in cinema in any given year, not quite as much effort is made to track down every would-be stinker. As such, I’ve tried to highlight truly terrible films that either ‘damn well should have been good’ or represent something greater than itself via its artistic failure. Anyway, without further pretentious ado, here are the nine worst films in alphabetical order, followed by the absolute worst picture in 2011.

I use the term "worst" loosely as I am generally not paid to see the obviously terrible films that open all year round. Plus, I'm not feeling the negativity this year. Or, rather, I'm trying not to feel it. With Bridesmaids and Melancholia both speaking so eloquently on the subject of depression this year like some perfect if unlikely double feature (more on that soon) why should I wallow in my own? No, 2011 was a good year for cinema. So here is a very quick purge of the things that momentarily led me to believe otherwise. 

Hell's Multiplex

Hell's multiplex has noisy audiences, crying babies, constant texting, and 50 million miniature screens showing only 50 movies, a million microscopic screens for each sorry movie! Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!

Another indie horror flick has found itself a home as IFC Midnight announced today that the company has acquired the U.S. rights to director Padraig Reynolds’ thriller Rites of Spring.

Rites of Spring stars Aj Bowen (The Signal, The House of the Devil, Hatchet 2), his Signal co-star Anessa Ramsey, Marco St. John from the Dylan Dog adaptation Dead of Night, and Shanna Forrestall (The Last Exorcism).

The weather outside isn't the only thing that's frightful as we have compiled a list of the year's best and worst Blu-ray packages for you or the horror fan on your holiday shopping list! Being that you can score a player for way less than 200 bucks now, there's little reason not to upgrade to the glorious world of high definition horror. Read on to find out where the smart money is!

Netflix recently added multiple horror titles including Insidious, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, House, Children of the Corn, I Sell the Dead, Chillerama, Creepshow 2, House II, Vamp, Final Destination 2, C.H.U.D., Return of the Killer Tomatoes, Midnight Movie, and The Evil of Frankenstein.

Horror releases from October include Red State, The Ward, Paranormal Activity 2, The Last Exorcism, Poltergeist II, Poltergeist III, Ghoulies, Children of the Corn: Revelations, and The Nesting.

Also, don’t forget that Netflix added The Walking Dead Season 1 to their streaming service not too long ago, and has a deal in place to stream future seasons as well. While some Netflix users find their TV and new release offerings to be lacking, the horror category is something they continue to update regularly and there are plenty of classic/cult titles to enjoy.

One of history’s most iconic action heroes makes his home entertainment debut when Lionsgate releases Conan The Barbarian on Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack (Blu-ray 3D +Blu-ray +DVD + Digital Copy). Journey to the Center of the Earth was released in 3D in theaters and on anaglyph 3D (with those lovely red/green glasses) on Blu-ray and DVD back in 2008, but this release is for the better Blu-ray 3D.

Based on the novel by Jules Verne, the 2008 science-fiction movie stars Brendan Fraser (Furry Vengeance) as a scientist who, with his nephew (Josh Hutcherson, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant), traces the last journey of his missing brother. They travel to Iceland and find a guide (Anita Briem, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night), but after getting trapped in a cave, they fall into a hole that leads them to a lost world in — you guessed it — the center of the Earth.

Directed by Eric Brevig (Yogi Bear), the PG-rated action adventure film Journey to the Center of the Earth grossed $101.7 million when it was in theaters.

Brandon Routh starred in the 2006 film, Superman Returns, as the man of steel. Before the film was released, there was a lot of hope and enthusiasm bringing back Superman to the big screen. However once the film was released, it was not received well by its loyal following, nor by critics. We spoke to Brandon Routh and Sam Huntington, who both starred in Superman Returns, and reunited for the horror/comedy Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, which opens in theatres April 29th. Routh told us that while he liked Superman Returns, he admits there were flaws in the film. Routh also adds if given to chance to star in the reboot of Superman film, Superman: Man Of Steel, he feels he could have brought a little growth to the character, considering he is six years older and more mature than when the last film was released. A private investigator who chases cheating spouses, is brought back into the world of the paranormal after abandoning it when he takes on a client whose father was murdered by a creature of the night.

A pleasant, if not particularly distinguished or memorable, diversion. The word that singularly best describes Dylan Dog is “almost”. The proceedings are amusing , but if the pacing had been tighter Dylan Dog would have been much more exciting and fun. Brandon Routh makes for an alright hero, but he is never really given all that much to do. Routh gets to engage in plenty of action, but is never given any action sequences that really showcase him well. He is never given that big emotional scene that makes it so that his character resonates with viewers.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is probably one of the most lazy films of 2010. I make fun of terrible low-budget horror and action films all the time, but these films did not have the advantages of Brandon Routh or Taye Diggs in leading roles. Most of these movies went straight to DVD and never expected audiences to shell out $12 for a ticket. Dylan Dog: Dead of Night had the advantages of a known property and fairly big-name leading actors, but the product they turned out would be more at home on the SyFy channel than in movie theaters.

I think most of us can agree that, judging by the trailers for Dylan Dog and the poor box office turnout, viewing this silly monster murder mystery was probably best saved for DVD. The DVD was released last week and it was time to see if it could be better than I thought. I remained optimistic. I believed that, just maybe, Brandon Routh could be involved in an entertaining film and redeem himself after the unfortunate Superman reboot.

I wondered if this might be an action horror film in major release that rises above what it seems. What it seemed like was a silly noir detective story with a big budget gloss and monsters thrown in for good measure. Low and behold that is exactly what it is. It's not as bad as the universal panning by critics or the huge box office bomb would suggest, but...

Last June, Marvel Studios hired Conan: The Barbarian reboot screenwriters Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to write a script for a potential Doctor Strange movie. While not the most well-known character in Marvel's canon, the move was an attempt to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and one that was approved by the character's creator, Stan Lee.

While Oppenheimer and Donnelly obviously have experience working with supernatural and fantasy comic book characters after working on Conan and Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, their script was apparently good enough for Marvel to move forward. Twitch Film reports that Marvel has received the Doctor Strange script and are putting together a shortlist of directors in order to find someone to "oversee continued development".
