Marcia Gay Harden has been cast in Season 2 of “Murder in a Small Town,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Harden will appear in a series regular role, playing Mayor Christie Holman in the mystery drama. The character is described as “a beloved figure in the community and also a consummate political operator. She’s still a practicing doctor and has the best interests of the people of Gibsons at heart, but sometimes she lets her personal interests take precedence. She will complicate life for Karl (Rossif Sutherland) and Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk), as she uses the competing priorities of the community to advance her own agenda.”
Harden most recently starred in the CBS dramedy “So Help Me Todd” for two seasons. She has received Emmy nominations for her work in “The Morning Show,” “The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler,” and for guest starring on “Law & Order: Svu.” She won the Academy...

Although some of the most famous works about the Holocaust appear in other media — “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich,” for example, among books and Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List” in films — television is the medium that has brought the horror of the Nazis’ murder of six million Jews to the most people around the world. The importance of shining a light on the evil plan behind the Holocaust may be even more crucial today, as the Nazi agenda of white supremacy has made an unfortunate return in these times, once again rising (and even flourishing) in countries around the world.
Even taking on a subject as horrifyingly specific as the Holocaust, television has responded by telling the story in many different ways — through epic miniseries, dramas about Jewish prisoners, adventures of both rescuers and rebels and even a look into the Nazi psyche itself (“Conspiracy”).

This November, after three full years of waiting, fans of FX’s “Fargo” will be treated to a brand new season. Unlike the anthology series’ fourth iteration, which served as a prequel to its first two, the upcoming fifth batch of episodes will tell an entirely original Midwestern crime story. Leading the season’s star-studded cast is Jon Hamm, who has his sights set on earning his first Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor Golden Globe nomination this winter. Since he was already honored in the corresponding drama series category for “Mad Men” in 2008 and 2016, his possible new victory would make him the seventh man to clinch Golden Globes for performances on both continuing and non-continuing TV programs.
Hamm, who picked up four additional Golden Globe bids for “Mad Men” between 2009 and 2013, has already begun his splashy 2023 return to prestige TV by playing a new supporting role on the third season of “The Morning Show.

No show this past season had a breakout moment quite like “Squid Game” did. Just two months after Netflix released its entire nine-episode debut season on September 17, it was announced that the South Korean series about class, inequality and exploitation had become the streamer’s most-watched show of all time. Now, the mega hit has also taken the Emmys by storm, racking up an impressive 14 nominations. One of those is for guest star Lee You-mi, who is recognized for her heartbreaking portrayal of Ji-yeong (aka Player 240) on the show. This marks the career-first bid for the actor, who now hopes to, uh, get the green light all the way to her maiden victory.

Nearly two decades into her stand-up comedy career, Martha Kelly ventured into acting by taking on the role of Martha Brooks on the FX comedy series “Baskets.” In the half dozen years since her debut, she has carved out a niche playing perpetually soft-spoken, outwardly joyless characters on such sitcoms as “Will & Grace,” “Grace and Frankie,” and “Hacks.” She has also applied her notoriously deadpan performing style to a few dramatic parts, including the one for which she just received her first Emmy nomination: Laurie on HBO’s “Euphoria.”

Half of the record-breaking 14 acting Emmy nominations “Succession” received this year went to guest performers, three of whom are women. The only other series that have ever amassed as many simultaneous bids in the Best Drama Guest Actress category are “Six Feet Under” (2002), “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2009), and “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2018). Included among the “Succession” trio is Sanaa Lathan, whose third-season performance is the first for which she has earned TV academy recognition.

With an Oscar and a Tony under her belt, Marcia Gay Harden only needs an Emmy in order to accomplish the Triple Crown of Acting. Along with Judi Dench, Mercedes Ruehl, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, she is one of four living actresses who needs an Emmy to complete the hat trick, and she has now been given her third shot at nabbing the top TV prize. If she succeeds on her 2022 Best Drama Guest Actress nomination for “The Morning Show,” she will be the 16th woman to collect all three major acting awards and the eighth to do so in under 25 years.

Forma Pro Films is planning to launch one of Europe’s largest LED Unit studios in Latvia this summer, Variety has learned. The virtual production facility will utilize the latest state-of-the-art technology in real-time rendering, live camera tracking hardware, and LED screens to enable what the company describes as “a completely new way” of producing films, TV shows and commercials.
Three films and seven commercials are already lined up for production.
The 16,000-square-foot site, set to open in the Latvian capital of Riga this August, will offer a combination of game engine technology and a photorealistic 3D environment to allow for the creation of spatial imagery that the company says goes beyond what is currently possible in film production.

Jude Law received his fourth Golden Globe Award nomination and first for television three years ago in the Best TV Movie/Limited Actor category for his eponymous role in “The Young Pope” on HBO. He reprised his role as Pius Xiii this year for a second season titled “The New Pope,” with John Malkovich joining the cast in the new title role as John Paul III. With Law downgrading to a supporting part in the Vatican drama, he contends for a repeat nomination now in the Best TV Supporting Actor race.

With “Genius: Aretha” (and everything else) forced to halt production in March, National Geographic moved the premiere of “Barkskins” up six months in their schedule to take its place as their big scripted push for the 2020 Emmys. The historical fiction drama series adapts the first 100 pages of the 2016 Annie Proulx novel of the same name across its eight-episode first season that will now air with back-to-back hour-long episodes over four Mondays in May and June, starting with Memorial Day. Nat Geo is shrewdly entering the show in the Best Limited Series race to capitalize on their momentum from “Genius” in the race.
The network broke into the major categories at the Emmys for the anthology’s 2017 debut starring Geoffrey Rush as Albert Einstein. He received a Best Movie/Limited Actor nomination, alongside nominations in Best Movie/Limited Directing for Ron Howard, Best Limited Series and seven categories below the line for a total of 10 nominations.

The Oscar for Best Supporting Actress went to a wide swath of talented actresses in the 1990s, including Whoopi Goldberg, Marisa Tomei, Anna Paquin, Judi Dench and Angelina Jolie. Last night the 67th Annual Golden Globes were awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to just about everyone who didn’t deserve one. Shrug.
When you’re watching the Globes, it’s hard not to get swept up in the celebrities, the red carpet, and the Hollywood gushing as if any of this means anything. Then they hand a golden statue to a movie where a naked Asian man jumps out of a trunk with a crowbar (The Hangover), and you remember, “Ohhhh yeah, this award is completely meaningless in about seven weeks.”
Due to the endless array of Globes to distribute, Ricky Gervais was given a short monologue and a few mean-spirited laughs at the expense of the presenters. A Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler reunion (to promote their awful upcoming The Bounty Hunter) was overshadowed by the host calling them “Rachel from ‘Friends’ and that bloke from...

I’m sure if you’re at all interested in which movies win what at each of the big award ceremonies, you caught the 67 Annual Golden Globe Awards last night on NBC. It was a fun show (as the Globes usually are compared to the Oscars), with some predictable/expected winners and some pretty major shocks.
Rickey Gervais was an absolute hoot as the host, jabbing in and out with often controversial but almost always funny gags which ranged from a Mel Gibson drinking joke (“I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson.”) to one about Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler (“It’s Rachel from Friends and that bloke out of 300.”). Great stuff from a great host choice.

Photo: Hollywood Foreign Press Association The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards were held tonight and it's hard to say there were very many surprises as much as there were disappointments. Of course, I think the fact a film like Sherlock Holmes gets recognized for an award while The Hurt Locker goes home empty-handed is a complete sham. I believe Avatar is worthy of awards, but technical awards, which it will win at the Oscars, but since those aren't handed out at the Globes it means the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Hfpa) feels the need to dote on it in categories where others are more deserving.
Avatar took home Best Picture (Drama) and director James Cameron won over the presumptive winner Kathryn Bigelow. This only causes agitation for me personally, because the whole show continued celebrity love while the smaller more deserving names were consistently overlooked.

I’m dumbfounded that The Hurt Locker didn’t win a single trophy in any of the 3 categories it was nominated, with James Cameron & the over-rated Avatar doing quite well. Meh…
Good to see Mo’Nique win though. That was the only win for Precious, as expected; I think the Oscar is hers to lose.
Sandra “You threaten my son, you threaten me” Bullock winning for The Blind Side was an unfortunate surprise. Winning over Helen Mirren and Carey Mulligan was a head-scratcher.
The Princess & The Frog walked away empty handed, losing to Up in the animation category;
And lastly, in the best dramatic actor category, in which Morgan Freeman was nominated, the award went to Jeff Bridges, for his work in Crazy Heart – a film I haven’t seen.
The rest below…

In case you missed the Golden Globes tonight, here is a quick recap of all the big winners at the event... and there were definitely a few surprises. James Cameron took home the award for Best Director and believe it or not, Avatar won for Best Motion Picture (Drama), lending more weight to the film's Oscar chances. Jeff Bridges won Best Actor (Drama) for Crazy Heart, while Sandra Bullock won Best Actress (Drama) for The Blind Side. It was no surprise to see Christoph Waltz win Best Supporting Actor for his turn in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, but I think more than a few eyebrows were raised when The Hangover scored the trophy for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical)! Surprisingly, Cameron's ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow and her film The Hurt Locker came away empty handed. You can argue all you want over whether or not the Golden Globes mean anything,...

What the Golden Globe Awards lack in prestige they make up for in being damn entertaining. The Oscars are a serious affair and you can make all the jokes you want as long as they don’t mock the pomp and circumstance of the ceremony. The Golden Globes, on the other hand, are selected by the sycophantic Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and they need to keep a modicum of respectability while still netting all the big-name stars they can to come to their party. Since everyone knows the score, it’s a more relaxed affair with meals, jokes, and giving awards to non-traditional nominees that the Academy may not bother to nominate at all, (e.g. Sacha Baron Cohen for Best Actor in a Comedy for Borat).

It may have been a dark and stormy night outside the Beverly Hilton, but inside the glittery 67th annual Golden Globes kicked off with a frothy start as the evening's host, Ricky Gervais, welcomed the assembled movie and TV stars."Let's get on with it before NBC replaces me with Jay Leno," Gervais cracked as he kicked off the proceedings.Nicole Kidman, the first presenter, pointed out that a lot of the attendees were wearing ribbons in support of Haiti and plugged the upcoming George Clooney-organized concert to benefit the stricken country. The most-nominated actor or actress in Globes history, Meryl Streep received her seventh Globe for "Julie & Julia," which Tom Hanks described as "the Meryl Streep movie where she doesn't end up in bed with Alec Baldwin, but does with Stanley Tucci -- by any measure a substantial move up." In fact, Streep's "Julie" win beat out her...

The results are in! The 67th annual Golden Globes, the first Hollywood award ceremony of the year, kicked off tonight at 8pm Est on NBC with several fashion hits and misses, teary acceptance speeches and some witty punch lines served by British comedian host Ricky Gervais.Though some winners were predictable, this year's Golden Globes event honored a lot of first timers unlike the previous ceremonies. Mo'Nique took home the first award of the evening as she was named Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Mary Lee Johnston in Precious, a film adaptation of the award-winning 1996 novel Push by Sapphire.Toni Collette, on the other hand, got the first TV award of the night as she earned her first Globe following three previous nominations for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV series Comedy in The United States of Tara, where she plays a mother with multiple personalities.

Could the reign of "30 Rock" at awards shows be at an end? If we're right about Sunday's Golden Globes, it might be.
The reigning Globe winner for best comedy series, actor (Alec Baldwin) and actress (Tina Fey) is no longer a clear-cut favorite to sweep the 67th annual awards Sunday (Jan. 17). A renaissance in TV comedy in the past year means a much more crowded field -- newcomers "Glee," "Modern Family," "Nurse Jackie" and "United States of Tara" are all nominated.
Taking into account the best of what TV had to offer in 2009 -- and the fact that Golden Globes voters tend to favor both big stars and new shows -- we offer our predictions for how the awards for TV comedy and TV movies and miniseries will (and should) go come Sunday.

The DGA, which unveiled the small-screen nominations in eight categories last Friday, will announce the winners Jan. 30 at its 62nd annual awards ceremonies at the Century Plaza Hotel. AMC’s Mad Men received three Directors Guild of America TV nominations for drama series and HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and Fox’s Glee each got a pair for comedy. "Mad Men" crew prove themselves that they work with the best. The AMC drama has just received three nominations at 2010 Directors Guild Awards. Three episodic directors, Jennifer Getzinger, Lesli Linka Glatter and Matthew Weiner, will compete against each other in Dramatic Series category.
The domination by "Mad Men" is almost being toppled by Fox's new series, "Glee", which nabs two under the category of Comedy Series. Similarly, HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" also has two candidates under Comedy, Jeff Schaffer and Larry Charles, who are both known as executive producers as well.
"Television directors play a crucial role in eliciting performance, advancing the story and establishing the look and feel in all genres of television," said DGA President Taylor Hackford. "The DGA Awards highlight the most outstanding examples of excellence in television each year, and our 41 nominees in eight categories have distinguished themselves with creative, compelling projects that entertained and informed a diverse worldwide audience.

The Directors Guild of America has revealed its nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television, Drama Series, Comedy Series, Musical Variety, Reality Programs, Daytime Serials, Children’s Programs and Commercials. Despite the shit TV directors get, TV is progressing toward a greater cinematic atmosphere and TV directors are having greater relevance in the medium. DGA President, Taylor Hackford said, “television directors play a crucial role in eliciting performance, advancing the story and establishing the look and feel in all genres of television”. There’s no better example than Lost, which feels more like an hour-long, big-budget film than a TV show. The two-part season 5 finale received a nod, and Curb Your Enthusiasim director’s Jeff Schaffer and Larry Charles were nominated for their work on the last two episodes of the fictional Seinfeld-reunion that took place on the show. Unlike the 19 pro pundits who weighed in with Golden Globe predictions, 7 of our forum moderators think that the main competition for "Up in the Air" as best drama picture is "Inglourious Basterds" rather than "Avatar." While the pros were almost evenly divided as to the winner of the drama movie actress -- with a slim majority going with Carey Mulligan ("An Education") -- our moderators are firmly on the side of Sandra Bullock ("The Blind Side"). Neither the pros nor the moderators can agree on who will win drama movie actor or comedy/musical movie. As with all but one of the pros, our moderators agree that Meryl Streep ("Julie & Julia") will win comedy/musical movie actress. However, almost all of our moderators are backing Robert Downey Jr. ("Sherlock Holmes") to win comedy/musical movie actor while the pros spread their predictions around all five contenders.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Hfpa) announced their nominees for the 67th Annual Golden Globes and before I comment on the nominees, I first have to explain something about the Globes. The Globes are not really an indiciator of the Oscars. Critics lists and awards from various guilds are far better predictors because the Globes are ultimately bought and paid for by the studios. The Oscars are as well to some extent, but the Globes are just ridiculous. However, it doesn’t mean they’re not a lot of fun and that they’ll take chances Oscar won’t.
But the big movie nominee was a safe choice with Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air grabbing six nods followed by Rob Marshall’s Nine, which racked up five. But looking through the nominees, there are some absolutely bizarre inclusions: Julia Roberts for Duplicity (this one makes sense when you...

The folks over at Cinematical were good enough to be up early this December morning to update folks in real-time with the 67th Annual Golden Globe nominations. Things are officially gearing up to the Awards season early next year, all leading up to the “big ones” – the Oscars. The Golden Globes are arguably the second-biggest awards out there, and we have this year’s nominations right here.
I’d say for the most part that the nominations are quite predictable. Not that that’s a bad thing – if it’s clear to all what the best movies, performances, scores etc are, then it should result in them getting nominated (that’s the way it Should work, anyway – hey-oh! ). Before I get to some of my thoughts on who’s been nominated, check out the nominations list yourself, again thanks to Cinematical (as well as GoldenGlobes.org):

Photo: Hollywood Foreign Press Association The nominations are in for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards and the leader at the moment is Up In the Air with six nominations, followed by Nine with five and Inglourious Basterds and Avatar both earning four nominations each. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me personally is the absence of In the Loop in the Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) category as well as Peter Capaldi not getting a Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) nomination. It's a great film and this was really it's only chance and it has come up empty.
As far as nominated surprises go, Tobey Maguire getting a Best Actor (Drama) nom for Brothers is surprising, but at the same time it is well-deserved (even if I think Jake Gyllenhaal had the best performance in that flick). Coen brothers fans will be happy to see Michael Stuhlbarg getting a nomination for A Serious Man...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced its nominations this morning for the 67th annual Golden Globes Awards. "Up in the Air" received six nominations including Best Picture, Drama, while "Nine" received five noms including Best Picture, Comedy (huh? "Nine" is definitely Not a comedy!).
"Avatar," "Inglourious Basterds," "The Hurt Locker," and "Precious" are also Best Picture, Drama contenders, while "(500) Days of Summer," "The Hangover," "It's Complicated," "Julie and Julia" complete the Best Picture, Comedy list.
Sandra Bullock received two acting nominations. One for drama for "The Blind Side" and one for comedy for "The Proposal." She's really having a terrific year!
Meryl Streep is also having a terrific year. She's a double contender for Best Actress, Comedy or Musical for "Julie and Julia" and "It's Complicated."
I enjoyed "Nine," but didn't love it, and I suspect many voters felt the same. The nominees from the film are certainly deserving especially Marion Cotillard (Best Actress,...

It felt like a mad, pop-culture scavenger hunt as noms for the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards were read early Tuesday.
On the one hand, the 83 voting members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. endorsed Paramount's "Up in the Air," the zeitgeisty movie about corporate downsizing, by rewarding it with six noms, including best drama. That underscored the movie's status as an awards season front-runner that doesn't flinch from real-world issues but instead confronts recession-era America head-on.
At the same time, the Hfpa applauded the Weinstein Co.'s "Nine," a musical reworking of Fellini's 1963 film "8 1/2," with five noms. Reveling in the glamour of early '60s Rome, "Nine" couldn't care less about the problems of the average guy as it swirls around a world-famous director (played by nominee Daniel Day-Lewis) as he worries about his next film while juggling the many women in his life.

Justin Timberlake, John Krasinski and Diane Kruger got up extra early on Tuesday, December 15 to read out the contenders for 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Under the Motion Pictures category, "Up in the Air", the dramedy starring George O'Clooney and Anna Kendrick, receives six nods including Best Motion Picture Drama.
Next earner in terms of number is Rob Marshall's "Nine" with five nominations. Its lead actors Marion Cotillard and Daniel Day-Lewis are nominated for Best Actress and Actor in Motion Picture respectively while the movie itself is vying for Best Motion Picture along with "Julie & Julia" and "The Hangover" among others. Studio-wise, The Weinstein Company leads with 12, thanks to "Nine" and "Inglourious Basterds".
In the meantime, the TV category is led by Fox's critically-praised musical "Glee". Beating the number that last year's big winners "30 Rock" and "Mad Men" got this year by a sheer 1, "Glee" has the chance to win Best TV Series,...
