Freida Pinto to Star in Netflix Drama Series Unaccustomed Earth, Based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s Acclaimed Stories
Freida Pinto at an event for Les Immortels (2011)
Netflix has announced its latest high-profile drama project, Unaccustomed Earth, with acclaimed actress Freida Pinto set to lead the cast as Parul Chaudhury. The eight-episode series is based on the beloved short story collection by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri and will bring to life a sweeping narrative set within an elite Indian-American community in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Described as an “epic, soapy, and culturally vibrant” drama, Unaccustomed Earth explores themes of love, longing, and identity. At its heart is a scandalous romance: a devoted wife rekindles a relationship with a long-lost love, igniting secrets and shifting loyalties in a close-knit immigrant community.

The series comes from showrunner and writer Madhuri Shekar, with direction by Ritesh Batra (The Lunchbox), who will helm the first two episodes and also serve as executive producer. Renowned producer John Wells joins the creative team, alongside a roster of executive producers that includes Lahiri herself, Nisha Ganatra,...

Watch: Danny Boyle & Dp Anthony Dod Mantle Discuss '28 Years Later'
Image
"Enormous tension between the ambition of the wide screen format and a small device - highly flexible, very little footprint... You need a great cinematographer to bring those two tensions together." Sony has revealed a 7-minute behind-the-scenes featurette for the hit zombie horror sequel 28 Years Later, which is now playing in theaters worldwide (one of my favorite films of the year so far). Following the trend set by Ryan Coogler with Sinners discussing film formats, they've released a cool video featuring Danny Boyle and his cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle discussing the style and techniques to film 28 Years Later. As everyone already knows, this British zombie horror movie was shot using iPhones, along with professional lenses and technical equipment attached to them, of course. They discuss all the equipment and the look they were going for, inspired by the rough digital look of the very first 28 Days Later all those years ago (c.

Freida Pinto to Star in ‘Unaccustomed Earth’ Series at Netflix
Image
Freida Pinto is set for a major role in Netflix’s upcoming series adaptation of the Jhumpa Lahiri short story collection “Unaccustomed Earth.”

Variety has learned that Pinto will play Parul Chaudhury in the series, which was originally announced in April. As previously reported, Netflix has commissioned eight episodes.

The official logline for the show states that it is “an epic, soapy, and culturally vibrant drama about a tight-knit Indian American community navigating love, desire, and belonging. Rich with nuance, passion, and unforgettable characters, ‘Unaccustomed Earth’ invites you into the elite and insular Indian-American community of Cambridge, Ma. When a star-crossed romance between a devoted wife and her long lost love comes to light, a scandalous affair is born and new battle lines are drawn in this intensely interconnected immigrant community.”

Pinto is perhaps best known for her breakout role in the Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire,” which marked her feature debut.

The Superman And Sinners Villains Have One Thing In Common (But Most Fans Missed It)
Image
Two of the biggest movies of the year 2025, Ryan Coogler's period vampire action horror/musical drama "Sinners" and James Gunn's DC Universe jump-starter "Superman," have one very particular thing in common. No, it's not their likeliness to wind up on "best of" lists at the end of the year, nor even the fact that both Coogler and Gunn are celebrated Marvel Cinematic Universe directors. It's the two movies' villains.

In "Superman," Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor is arguably the most comics-accurate live action depiction of the Man of Steel's bitter billionaire nemesis: A seething megalomaniac whose hubris builds Superman (David Corenswet) clones and pocket universes, and who kidnaps and torments ex-girlfriends and random civilians at the slightest provocation. Jack O'Connell's Remmick, the central antagonist of "Sinners," is an equally complex and bombastic beast, but far more sly. He's a lonely and ancient, yet decidedly demonic Irish immigrant vampire who uses tricks,...

All Danny Boyle Movies Ranked, From Worst to Best
Image
Danny Boyle is among the most fascinating directors to emerge from the rise of independent cinema in the 1990s, as he’s never been an artist content to do the same thing twice. While some of his contemporaries have been accused of simply being derivative of what made them acclaimed in the first place, Boyle has seamlessly floated between dramas, having made electrifying crime thrillers, high concept science fiction films, powerful human speculative dramas, fascinating biopics, and a few prestige television shows. Boyle is a strong humanist, as even at his most stylized, his films have a real interest in exploring the dimensionality of decisions and personal growth. He’s a filmmaker who has pushed the boundaries of the medium through his application of digital expressionism and hypnotic editing, but he’s also someone with a keen eye for casting, as he has identified some of the most influential actors of the generation through foresight.

Have We Already Seen This Year’s Best Picture Frontrunner?
Image
While speculation is already underway about which films will ostensibly launch their awards campaigns during the upcoming fall film festivals, here’s something worth remembering: the last four Best Picture winners all, quite notably, premiered before a fall festival run.

In other words, audiences may have already seen the next film that will win big at the Oscars.

Taking a look at the current crop of wide releases, recency bias has already put “F1: The Movie” on many a Best Picture prediction lists, given its warm critical response mixed with it slightly outperforming opening weekend box office expectations. The Apple Studios release comes from the same filmmaking team behind “Top Gun: Maverick,” leading to many comparisons between the two films.

But that may ultimately be to the film’s detriment, as the Tom Cruise-led legacy sequel set a very high bar. Still, there is definitely a road for the racing movie to,...

‘28 Years Later’ Has Grossed Five Times As Much As Danny Boyle’s Infamous 68% Rotten Tomatoes Film Noir
Image
Director Danny Boyle took a path befitting an Oscar-winner after Slumdog Millionaire, when he made the awards-bait survival drama 127 Hours, starring James Franco. But this well-mannered strategy lasted exactly one film, and Boyle was soon back to his transgressive ways with Trance, a neo-noir thriller starring James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson, and Vincent Cassel. The film underperformed at the box office, and drew raised eyebrows from critics. But it remains a cult favorite, with a considerably large contingent of defenders. Speaking of cults, Boyle's latest film, 28 Years Later, has now out-grossed Trance five times.

The movie recently passed the coveted $100 million mark at the worldwide box office, and is currently sitting at $104 million. By comparison, Tranceconcluded its run with just over $20 million globally. It didn't quite break even, since it cost a reported $20 million to produce. Trance received divisive reviews, and is currently sitting at a "fresh" 68% score on...

Sound And Vision: Danny Boyle
Image
In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Iggy Pop's Lust for Life, directed by Danny Boyle. It is somewhat baffling to me that Danny Boyle has only made one music video, and it is a tie-in to his film Trainspotting. Boyle is an avid music aficionado, and often has tie-in tracks to his films, like All Saint's Pure Shores for The Beach and Beck's Deadweight for A Life Less Ordinary (the music video of which was directed by no one other than Michel Gondry). Music plays a large role in films like Slumdog Millionaire, with its Bollywood inspired soundtrack and M.I.A.-centerpiece; 28 Days Later's central use of Godspeed You Black...

How to Train Your Dragon Worldwide Box Office: 3rd Weekend Update ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

How to Train Your Dragon crossed a major milestone at the worldwide box office on its third three-day weekend. The film has also crossed the $200 million milestone at the North American box office, surpassing the Marvel biggie Thunderbolts* and outgrossing Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning. Keep scrolling for the deets.

The live-action remake dropped to the second rank in the domestic box office chart due to Brad Pitt’s F1, but it still maintains a stronghold. The movie will most probably hit the $500 million milestone next weekend, but it is not a contender to gross $1 billion in its lifetime run. It will potentially emerge as the highest-grossing film in the entire franchise, paving the way for its live-action sequel.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Soars Past Danny Boyle’s $384 Million Sleeper Hit at the Global Box Office
Image
While older males are entertained by the Brad Pitt-led sports drama F1 this weekend, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake provided counter-programming to family audiences, hitting a massive milestone at the worldwide box office. The movie has passed the $450 million mark worldwide after completing two full weeks of release in theaters, and is on track to pass the half-billion mark in the next week or so. How to Train Your Dragon marks DreamWorks Animation’s first-ever live-action remake, after Disney cornered the market for over a decade, recently delivering Lilo & Stitch.

With $199 million domestically and another $254 million from overseas markets, the movie’s cumulative global haul now stands at a fantastic $454 million. By comparison, the original animated How to Train Your Dragon grossed nearly $500 million worldwide in 2010, while the sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, made over $600 million globally in 2014. A third installment ended up generating...

Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’ Crowned the Best Superhero Movie of the 21st Century
Image
Superhero movies have taken over Hollywood in the last 20 years, but one of them just got named the best of the bunch. According to a new ranking by The New York Times, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is the greatest superhero movie of the 21st century.

Over 500 people in the film industry took part in this poll, including actors, directors, and critics. They were asked to pick the best movies released since the start of the year 2000. Each person had their own idea of what makes a movie “the best,” but in the end, The Dark Knight made the biggest impression.

It landed at number 28 on the list of 100, making it the highest-ranked superhero film. The only other superhero movie that made it onto the list was Black Panther, which showed up much lower at number 96.

Batman Claims the Title of 21st Century’s Greatest Superhero Movie
Image
Superhero movies have taken over the cinema in the 21st century, but only one of them has been crowned the greatest of them all in a major new ranking. According to The New York Times, The Dark Knight is the top superhero film of this century.

The New York Times asked over 500 people in the film industry—including directors, actors, and critics, to vote for the best movies made since January 1, 2000. Everyone had their own idea of what “best” meant, and out of all the superhero movies released, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight came out on top. It landed at number 28 on the list of 100, way ahead of Black Panther, the only other superhero film on the list, which placed at number 96.

For Nolan, it was a big moment too. He had five movies make the top 100, but The Dark Knight ranked the highest. In their write-up, The New York Times said,...

Iconic Batman DC Film Ranks High on Nyt's Top 100 Movies of the 21st Century List
Image
The Dark Knight is the greatest superhero movie of the 21st century, at least according to The New York Times' polling pool. The publication recently unveiled its 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century List. The list polled more than 500 filmmakers, actors, and influential film fans to vote for the 10 best movies released since Jan. 1, 2000, and it was up to the voters to define what "best" meant to them. With superhero movies being one of, if not the dominant genre of the 21st century, the list would have to include at least one, and Batman ranked the highest.

The Dark Knight ranked #28 on the New York Times 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century List. It is one of only two superhero movies to make the list, alongside Black Panther, which ranked #96. The Dark Knight is also director Christopher Nolan's fifth film on the list, and his highest-ranked film. Regarding The Dark Knight,...

Echo Lake Entertainment Signs ‘Day My Brain Exploded’ Author Ashok Rajamani (Exclusive)

Echo Lake Entertainment has signed author Ashok Rajamani for representation in all areas. Rajamani will be represented by Amy Schiffman, partner at Echo Lake Entertainment.

The signing comes as Rajamani’s breakthrough memoir “The Day My Brain Exploded: A True Story” is set to be adapted into a feature film by the producers of Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire.” The book chronicles Rajamani’s extraordinary survival from a massive brain hemorrhage at age 25, tackling themes of disability, race, and cultural taboos.

Schiffman previously served as a partner at Intellectual Property Group and as head of literary property divisions at both Gersh and William Morris Endeavor before joining Echo Lake.

Crafting the ‘28 Years Later’ Soundtrack: How Scottish Band Young Fathers Worked With ‘King of the Needle Drop’ Danny Boyle
Image
Danny Boyle is a director known for his exceptional use of music to score key — and now iconic — scenes in his films. Think Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life” in “Trainspotting” as Ewan McGregor pounded the streets of Edinburgh or the movie’s euphoric closing moments as Underworld’s era-defining track “Born Slippy” played. In fact, think most of the “Trainspotting” soundtrack. Then there was A.R Rahman’s hands-in-the-air anthem “Jai Ho!” from the “Slumdog Millionaire finale, John Murphy’s rousing “Adagio in D Minor” from “Sunshine” (and numerous other subsequent films) and God Speed You Black Emperor’s “East Hastings,” heard as as Cillian Murphy famously wandered the streets of a deserted London at the start of “28 Days Later.”

According to Scottish band Young Fathers, Boyle is the “King of the Needle Drops,” and someone who can throw music — and sometimes not the music you’d expect — into...

‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’: Danny Boyle’s Risky Gamble Can Ruin Cillian Murphy’s Return
Image
Director Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later is now in theaters, receiving positive reviews with impressive box office numbers. The film is the first installment in a planned new trilogy set in the same universe that started with Boyle’s 2002 post-apocalyptic movie starring Cillian Murphy.

While Murphy did not appear in 28 Years Later, he is expected to return in the sequel, titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. However, Boyle did not direct the second installment, which is a risky gamble given that the third installment isn’t set in stone. As a result, Boyle’s gamble risks ruining Murphy’s return and the planned trilogy, and here is how.

Danny Boyle took a risky gamble with 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple director

'40 Acres': 'Carry-On' Star's Post-Apocalyptic Thriller Hits Theaters Next Month
Image
If you heard the buzz coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival last year about 40 Acres but haven't been able to track it down, you're finally in luck. The post-apocalyptic action thriller starring Carry-On's Danielle Deadwyler is set to hit theaters on July 2, and based on its 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, this is one you're not going to want to miss.

Now, admittedly, 40 Acres will only be receiving a limited theatrical release, so it might not be playing at a cinema near you, but you should still keep it on your radar for when it eventually makes its way to streaming. Called an "entertaining edge of your seat thriller" by critic Courtney Small, the Canadian film features an eclectic mix of Black and Indigenous actors, including Kataem O'Connor, Michael Greyeyes, and Jaeda LeBlanc (Gen V). Directed by R.T. Thorne – who's primarily made his name directing episodes of TV shows like Kung Fu,...

Danny Boyle, 68, Passes Monumental Career Box Office Milestone Thanks to ’28 Years Later’
Image
If it seems like Danny Boylehas left an indelible impression on the last three decades of cinema, that's only because it's true. The British filmmaker has always been ahead of the curve, sometimes to his own detriment. His latest film,28 Years Later, finds him in typically adventurous form. He shot a large portion of it on iPhones and created startling images using inventive rigs and setups. The film opened this past week to positive reviews and helped push Boyle's career box office haul past a majestic milestone.

Thanks to the $60 million that the zombie sequel has grossed globally so far, the cumulative total of Boyle's movies has passed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. To be precise, the grand total revenue of all his films combined currently stands at around $1.04 billion globally. Boyle's biggest hit remains Slumdog Millionaire, the India-set sleeper hit that was almost released directly on home video,...

Alex Garland Says ’28 Years Later’ Isn’t About Covid But the Pandemic Still Shaped It: “It wouldn’t Have Been Possible to Work on This Film”
Image
After more than two decades, the team behind 28 Days Later is back with a brand-new chapter in the zombie saga. Director Danny Boyle, writer Alex Garland, and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, who all worked on the original 2002 film, have reunited for 28 Years Later, now in theaters through Sony Pictures Releasing.

The film picks up years after the Rage Virus first hit. This time, the story follows a small family—played by Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and newcomer Alfie Williams—who live on a quiet island far from the chaos of the infected mainland.

But when they head back to the mainland to search for supplies, they find themselves in deep trouble. Along the way, they face threats not just from the infected, but also from other survivors, including a few dangerous characters played by actors like Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell.

‘28 Years Later’ debuts with $30 million, ‘Elio’ lands Pixar’s lowest debut, and ‘Dragon’ is still No. 1
Image
Update June 22, 2025: How to Train Your Dragon continues to soar at the box office, earning $37 million over the June 20-22 weekend. Universal's live-action remake has now reached a worldwide total of $358 million in just two weeks.

Meanwhile, Sony's 28 Years Later emerged with a solid $30 million, marking the franchise's biggest opening ever and tripling the $10 million debut of 2002's 28 Days Later. The horror film added another $30 million from international audiences, bringing its worldwide total to $60 million — just $15 million short of 28 Days Later's $75 million lifetime theatrical gross.

Disney/Pixar's Elio delivered the studio's worst debut ever, earning just $21 million domestically. This performance lags behind Pixar's previous lowest openers — 1995’s Toy Story ($29.1 million), and 2023's Elemental ($29.6 million). Despite glowing audience reception — an A CinemaScore overall and an A+ from viewers under 25 — the film faces an uphill battle with its $150 million production budget. Overseas, Elio brought in a modest $14 million,...

“Kind Of Cultural Appropriation”: 28 Years Later Director Argues His $378M Oscar-Winning Movie Wouldn’t Get Made Today
Image
Danny Boyle is back with his new movie, 28 Years Later, and he has been talking about his career, which includes the first movie in the series, 28 Days Later. However, he has also been discussing other films in his career, including his Oscar-winning Bollywood hit Slumdog Millionaire. In a recent interview, Boyle said he doesn't think someone like him could make that movie today.

Boyle was speaking to The Guardian about 28 Years Later when they began to discuss Slumdog Millionaire. The movie is a loose adaptation of the novel Q&a by Indian author Vikas Swarup. Dev Patel stars as a young man who grew up in the slums of Mumbai. He goes on a game show that is the Indian equivalent of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, hoping to raise his position in life and win over his childhood sweetheart.

However, when discussing making the film, Boyle said...

‘What Happens if Our Culture Dies?’ Danny Boyle on ’28 Years Later’

“I mean, this is our culture?” Danny Boyle asks, rhetorically. “Right?”

Or maybe he’s not being rhetorical — the British director has a tendency to pose as many questions as he does provide answers during an interview, and seems genuinely interested in having a conversation rather than simply being the “A” half of a Q&a. ‘28 Years Later’ Director Danny Boyle Follow Tom Hanks In ‘Regretting’ His Oscar Winning Work
Image
Director Danny Boyle directed 28 Years Later, which was recently released in theaters. Boyle is an Oscar-winner, with many casual viewers recognizing his name from his work on the 2008 drama movie Slumdog Millionaire, which emerged as a sleeper hit at the box office.

Years later, Boyle admitted that he regrets directing the movie, which explores the Indian culture and diaspora. As a result, Boyle is following actor Tom Hanks, who similarly distanced himself from one of his Oscar-winning roles. While Boyle’s comments make sense, he missed one key point Hanks got right, and here is what the acclaimed filmmaker had to say.

Danny Boyle reveals why he regrets directing Slumdog Millionaire

Danny Boyle Says He Could Not Make Slumdog Millionaire Now Because of Cultural Backlash
Image
Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire not only won the Best Picture Oscar but also the Academy Award for Best Director. Much has changed in the 17 years since Slumdog Millionaire's release, and the legendary director doesn't think he would make that movie today. Yet, unlike others who might rail against the idea of things being too politically correct, Danny Boyle doesn't think that is necessarily bad.

Speaking with The Guardian ahead of the release of 28 Years Later, Boyle was asked about making Slumdog Millionaire. The director looked back on it and how much the world has changed, and attitudes towards white filmmakers going in and telling stories of different races and cultures since he shot the film, saying, "Yeah, we wouldn’t be able to make that now, and that’s how it should be. It’s time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the...

Danny Boyle on why he would never think about doing Slumdog Millionaire today
Danny Boyle
Danny Boyle won the Academy Award for Best Director for Slumdog Millionaire over fifteen years ago, but he doubts he would be able to make the movie nowadays. The film starred Dev Patel as a teenager from the slums of Mumbai who won big in the Hindi version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. When interrogated on his suspicious performance on the show, he explains how his life story gave him all the answers.

“Yeah, we wouldn’t be able to make that now,” Boyle told The Guardian. “And that’s how it should be. It’s time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we’ve left on the world.“

Boyle continued, “At the time it felt radical, We made the decision that only a handful of us would go to Mumbai. We’d work with...

After Winning 8 Oscars in 2009, Danny Boyle Says His Most Acclaimed Film Couldn't Be Made Today
Image
Slumdog Millionaire was a massive hit for director Danny Boyle, and it helped put star Dev Patel on the movie map. But Boyle wouldn't direct it today, he has revealed.

It's not because of the quality of the movie, but rather because Boyle feels the job should have gone to an Indian director instead. After all, the film is set in India and is about Indian people. “We wouldn’t be able to make that now,” he told The Guardian while promoting his new film28 Years Later. “And that’s how it should be. It’s time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we’ve left on the world.”

From there, the conversation became about British colonialism. Asked if he felt the film was a product of that, Boyle answered, “No, no. Well, only in the sense that everything is.

Danny Boyle Says He Couldn’t Make ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Today

Danny Boyle may have won a best picture Oscar for his 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, but the director believes they wouldn’t be able to make that film in present time.

In an interview with The Guardian published Friday, the 28 Years Later director reflected on the Oscar-winning film that starred Dev Patel and Freida Pinto.

“Yeah, we wouldn’t be able to make that now,” he said of the film. “And that’s how it should be. It’s time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we’ve left on the world.”

When asked whether the production itself amounted to a form of colonialism, the director denied that but added, “Well, only in the sense that everything is. At the time it felt radical. We made the decision that only a handful of us would go to Mumbai.

Danny Boyle Says He Couldn’t Make ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Today, and He’d Want ‘a Young Indian Filmmaker’ Instead
Image
Danny Boyle is still “proud” of his Best Picture Oscar winner “Slumdog Millionaire,” even while acknowledging that, as a white British director, he could not make the Bollywood-influenced Mumbai epic today.

Boyle told The Guardian that his 2008 film, in hindsight, carries a weight of “cultural appropriation” despite working with “a big Indian crew.” Boyle also said “Slumdog Millionaire” would not get financed today with a director such as himself attached.

“We wouldn’t be able to make that now,” Boyle said. “And that’s how it should be. It’s time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we’ve left on the world.”

He continued, “I mean, I’m proud of the film, but you wouldn’t even contemplate doing something like that today. It wouldn’t even get financed. Even if I was involved, I’d...

Why Danny Boyle Passed On Directing Alien Sequel Revealed 27 Years After Divisive Response
Danny Boyle
With director Danny Boyle returning to the horror franchise he helped start in 28 Years Later, he also reflected on turning down his previous opportunity to direct Alien Resurrection. Boyle's return in 28 Years Later comes more than two decades after he helped redefine the zombie movie genre with 28 Days Later. The 2002 movie was Boyle's first horror movie, and he proved to be a true talent for the genre. However, closer to the start of his career, Boyle was offered the chance to direct a sequel in one of the biggest horror franchises of all time.

Speaking toThe Hollywood Reporter, Boyle explained that he was approached to direct the fourth movie in the Alien franchise, Alien: Resurrection. The movie ended up being directed by French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet, but Boyle was the studio's first choice for the project, coming off his acclaimed breakout movie, Trainspotting. However, while Boyle was approached...

Danny Boyle admitted to The Guardian on his press tour for “28 Years Later” that he would not even think about making his Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire” today. Citing “cultural appropriation” concerns, Boyle noted that he’d be “looking for a young Indian filmmaker” to direct “Slumdog Millionaire” if he was developing the project in 2025.

“We wouldn’t be able to make that now,” Boyle said. “And that’s how it should be. It’s time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we’ve left on the world.”

Worth the wait: To me, it feels like just yesterday watching Cillian Murphy wander around empty London streets in hospital scrubs in 28 Days Later. It wasn’t though – it was 23 years ago and I’m just showing my age. No doubt, however, that the love for Danny Boyle’s zombie horror franchise has lasted all that time, as proven by the noise around the premiere of the third instalment, and the first since 2007’s 28 Weeks Later. 28 Years Later had become the second-most watched horror trailer in history well before Boyle,...

Danny Boyle Says He Would Never Make Oscar-Winner ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Now Amid “Cultural Appropriation” Concerns
Image
Danny Boyle says he remains proud of Slumdog Millionaire, but he would never make the Oscar-winning film in the current climate.

Reflecting on his 2008 Best Picture winner in an interview with The Guardian, Boyle said the film, about a Mumbai ghetto kid (Dev Patel) who wins a quiz jackpot, would be difficult to mount — and for good reasons.

“We wouldn’t be able to make that now,” the 28 Years Later director said. “And that’s how it should be. It’s time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we’ve left on the world.”

Asked if he felt the production was a form of colonialism, Boyle responded: “No, no … Well, only in the sense that everything is. At the time it felt radical. We made the decision that only a handful of us would go to Mumbai.

Danny Boyle Reveals the Real Reason Why He Didn't Make 'Alien: Resurrection'
Image
Danny Boyle, the director of films like Trainspotting, The Beach, and 28 Days Later, has revealed that he was supposed to make the fourth film in the Alien series, the sci-fi horror franchise created by Ridley Scott in 1979. The director said he was happy to be involved in the film, which eventually became Alien Resurrection. However, he ultimately decided to abandon the project because he felt he wasn't "the right guy" to direct the horror sequel.

Boyle is currently promoting his most recent feature, 28 Years Later. The zombie horror movie is the third in the franchise, and it marks Boyle's official return to the series. He directed 28 Days Later in 2002, the groundbreaking movie that revolutionized the zombie genre. He wasn't involved in the sequel, 28 Weeks Later, but almost 20 years later, he has decided to revisit the post-apocalyptic horror franchise.

The director sat down with The Hollywood Reporter...

‘28 Years Later’ Director Danny Boyle On Return To Horror Series & Whether 007 Is In His Future – Crew Call Podcast
Image
Yes, there are a lot of horror movies out right now, and there are a lot of zombie everywhere from TV to film. But when they’re great, they’ll definitely find an audience. Enter the next installment of Danny Boyle’s 28 infected feature series 28 Years Later, which elevates the undead genre to sophisticated storytelling (a helluva second act) and visual dimensions, the latter as the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire director shot the movie on an iPhone 15 ProMax with a Theo Angelopoulos sense of natural lighting.

There was always a want for both screenwriter Alex Garland and Boyle to return to the 28 films after 2009’s 28 Weeks Later (which was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo). While talks fell apart back in the day, coming away from a global pandemic can serve as an inspiration for a director and scribe whose previous work on the subject seemed prescience for a year...

’28 Years Later’ Review: Still Infectiously Good

Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfie Williams in Columbia Pictures’ ’28 Years Later’

How long is a long time to wait for a sequel? Recently, we’ve waited 36 years for a Beetlejuice sequel, 36 years for a Top Gun sequel, 35 years for a Blade Runner sequel, and 30 years for a Mad Max sequel. This makes the 18 years since 28 Weeks Later seem like an afternoon nap, but considering they missed out on 28 Months Later, fans have been salivating. Well, the wait is over, and 28 Years Later is here.

After the events of 28 Days Later…, the entire British Isles were quarantined to keep the Rage virus off of mainland Europe. The survivors of the virus were left on the Isles to fend for themselves.

Danny Boyle Talks ‘28 Years Later’ Trilogy Plan, Turning Down ‘Alien’ and the Time ‘127 Hours’ Made Pixar Animators Faint
Image
On Danny Boyle’s 11th birthday, he and his twin sister were given a special treat, when their parents took them to the movies for the first time. Boyle and his father saw the Henry Fonda war epic Battle of the Bulge, while Boyle’s sister and mother watched The Sound of Music, which a year earlier won best picture at the Oscars.

Boyle was hooked. But growing up in a working-class family near Manchester, England, no one could have guessed that five decades years later, he would boast his own best picture winning-movie, 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire, and a kinetic style he has applied to dizzying number of genres, including drug-infused dark comedy (Trainspotting), zombie thriller (28 Days Later), true-life tale (Steve Jobs, 127 Hours) hard sci-fi (Sunshine), and feel-good musical (Yesterday), to name a few.

On Friday, the auteur returns to theaters with 28 Years Later, a $60 million sequel...

Danny Boyle Shares His One Regret About Walking Away From Directing ‘James Bond’
Image
James Bond may live to see another chapter in his new Amazon home, but British director Danny Boyle has ruled himself out of joining him there.

The Oscar winner (for Slumdog Millionaire) was the director of the 25th Bond movie, until he dropped out in 2018 over creative differences with the producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. He was replaced by Cary Joji Fukunaga, and the film No Time to Die was released in 2021.

Asked if he would consider picking up the baton again with the sale of the franchise to Amazon, Boyle told Business Insider: “That ship has sailed.”

He added that the one regret he had about leaving the project in 2018 was that “the script was really good. John Hodge (Boyle’s longtime collaborator) is a wonderful writer.”

Business Insider added that Boyle had previously revealed his plot would revolve around a Russian villain, and would have...

US sound editors in pioneering ban of generative AI from Golden Reel contenders

The Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) has become the first Hollywood awards group to come out strongly against generative AI, blocking any project that uses the technology from consideration for its Golden Reel Awards.

“We support and prize technological advances that assist artists in their creations,” the group said on Thursday. “However, standards for the legal and ethical use of Generative A.I. have yet to be established and are far from being accepted broadly. What we choose to promote as award-worthy points to how much we value the human endeavour of artistic creation.”
