Chicago – Vern started his career as one of those snarky critics who wrote in to Harry Knowles’ landmark and influential movie website Ain’t It Cool News. He became a regular writer for the site and his work there turned him into a very unorthodox author. His first book was a fantastic examination of, believe it or not, the career of Steven Seagal. Newly updated with a dozen new chapters about the recent adventures of his subject matter (the first printing was in 2008), “Seagalogy: A Study of the Ass-Kicking Films of Steven Seagal” is a funny, clever read for fans of the unusual action star and those who have never seen one of his movies. Vern’s movie-loving, smart, enjoyable writing makes this a more entertaining experience than Seagal himself has ever produced.

Don’t worry. This is not tongue-in-cheek nonsense. To say that Vern takes his subject matter seriously would be a Massive understatement.

Death Race 2 is a sequel I don’t think anyone saw coming. I find it hard to imagine there were many people who after watching the first and very average instalment of Paul W.S. Anderson’s prison racing film felt like they needed more – but for those that did, you are in for a treat as this film offers more of the same convict-racing carnage and little else!

Jason Statham and Joan Allen won’t be returning in this straight to DVD sequel but have been replaced by (arguably) a stronger cast of Sean Bean, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo and Luke Goss.

Bloody Disgusting have unveiled the first trailer for Death Race: Frankenstein Lives, which is directed by Roel Reiné, who was responsible for the Steven Seagal flick Pistol Whipped and the WWE Films sequel The Marine 2; with a script from writer/director Tony Giglio who previously found success with his Dtv 80’s slasher throwback Timber Falls.

Death Race 2 takes place in the very near future, as the United States economy begins to decline and violent crime starts to spiral out of control. THR are reporting that Lord of the Rings‘ Boromir, aka actor Sean Bean, has signed up to join the cast of Death Race: Frankenstein Lives, the curently filming prequel to 2008’s Death Race which starred another Brit, Jason Statham.

Also in the cast are Luke Goss, Lauren Cohan, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo and Frederick Koehler. Paul W.S. Anderson, who directed the 2008 movie, is producing -with Roel Reine (Pistol Whipped, The Marine 2) directing. The prequel tells the origin of the character Frankenstein (as seen in the first film and played my Luke Goss this time round), a convicted cop killer in a declining American empire where a racing reality show is about to be born in the country’s corrupt prison system.

Death Race: Frankenstein Lives will be released direct to DVD by Universal as part of their “DVD Originals” line-up.

Who knew that the John Cena action extravaganza “The Marine” was popular enough to warrant a sequel? Not this guy, apparently. Cena, however, has moved on to greener pastures, allowing another WWE star to take the reins. Seeing as how I’m not a wrestling fan, the name Ted Dibiase does absolutely nothing for me. He must be a bankable guy, as he’s landed the lead role in “Pistol Whipped” director Roel Reiné’s follow-up to the mildly popular 2006 actioner. The aforementioned Dibiase stars as a highly-trained recon sniper who must save a gaggle of vacationers from a band of savage terrorists. A sequel that has nothing to do with the original? Imagine that! My Friend Michael Jackson: Uri's Story pulled in 2.98m (12.5%) for ITV1 last night, according to the latest viewing figures. The documentary, which followed Jackson as he visited Exeter Football Club and went on a midnight shopping spree at London's Harrods, came third during the 8pm hour. It was beaten by BBC One's Hope Springs, which put in 3.78m (15.9%), and Top Gear, which took a respectable 7.17m (30.2%) for BBC Two. Channel 4's Wife Swap managed 1.48m (1.99%), while Five's film fest kicked off with Charlie's Angels, which attracted 1.06m (4.7%) between 7.15pm and 9pm. Sony Pictures' upcoming release of Against the Dark (formerly called Last Night) will find Seagal amidst all manner of toothy mayhem.

Strange but true: Steven Seagal may be all washed up here in North America, where he’s become a bit of a side show curiosity and object of mockery. But Japan? Japan’s a different story. His films still do pretty well there, a decent number of them landing theatrical releases and provoking such things as, you know, full fledged marketing campaigns. Which means trailers. Yes, there is a Japanese trailer online now for Seagal’s latest, Pistol Whipped, which also stars Lance Henriksen in a support role, Sure, Henriksen will go pretty much anywhere and do pretty much anything for a paycheck but he’s pretty solid in everything he does and the production values in this actually look quite good. Plus, as an added bonus, you get a super enthusiastic Japanese narrator. Huzzah!
