The film was initially scheduled for release on March 26, 2020 but because of the Covid-19 pandemic the premiere was postponed. The film was eventually released on November 26, 2020.
The story was loosely inspired by the 2016 Olympic Games when Russian sabre fencers Sofya Velikaya and Yana Egorian had to face each other in the finale.
Olympic épée fencing champion and former Minister of Sport Pavel Kolobkov has a cameo in the film.
The role of Aleksandra Pokrovskaya was written specifically with Svetlana Khodchenkova in mind.
Na ostrie was the closing film of the Moscow International Film Festival in 2020.
