Even though 12 Angry Men is my favorite movie of all time, I don’t actively seek out dramas—and by drama, I mean pure dramas—set in a single location where people are just talking. I can’t explain why. Maybe Sidney Lumet has set the bar so high that I’m afraid that if I choose a movie that employs the same gimmick, I will end up comparing it with that masterpiece and be disappointed. So, I just sit calmly and let fate decide if it’s time for me to stumble upon a movie set in this subgenre. That’s how I have come across Man from Earth, Reality, The Courtroom, Sunny, The Humans, 7 Days, One Night in Miami, Yannick, and Dirty Laundry. And, unsurprisingly or maybe a bit surprisingly, almost all of these titles are included in my “favorite movies of all time” list. Does...

From Happy Madison & It’s So Easy Productions, Kinda Pregnant brings actor/comedian Amy Schumer back to film leading lady status for the first time since 2018’s I Feel Pretty. However, it’s hardly a comeback for Schumer as she has been hard at work since then as she’s written & performed multiple comedy specials, created & starred in Hulu’s Life After Beth, brought back Inside Amy Schumer for a 5 episode run in 2022, & co-starred in several films including The Humans, Bros, & Netflix’s Unfrosted. She also became a mother in 2019, which was well documented in the miniseries Expecting Amy released on HBO Max in 2020.
This new film, co-written & co-produced by Schumer, centers on pregnancy and motherhood as well (kinda) with Amy’s character Lainy finding herself desperate & jealous as a woman in her 40s who’s wanted a family of her own since childhood.

Leonardo DiCaprio turned 50 in November and celebrated with a bash at L.A. hotspot San Vicente Bungalows. But he wasn’t the person whose party people were talking about.
That would be “Thelma” star June Squibb, who turned 95 on Nov. 6 and whose birthday blowout was a testament to how wide the actor’s appeal is. People from all generations packed the private residence to pay their respects; celebs from Kumail Nanjiani, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kathryn Newton mingled about. A 16-minute video of well-wishers included everyone from Scarlett Johansson to John Goodman. It also included her “Glee” co-star Chris Colfer and his husband Will Sherrod pitching “Junerassic Park” — a theme destination dedicated to the actor that includes “Squibb Games.”

It’s that time of year for the Dahls, the close-knit Christian family at the center of Leslye Headland’s bleak and biting new play Cult of Love. Christmas is their favorite holiday, an occasion for the four adult children (plus their spouses) to convene at the elder Dahls’ house and imbibe on batch Manhattans, gorge on dense confectionaries, stow away extra figgy pudding and sing carols exalting their Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
No matter that a handful of the Dahls are having a crisis of faith, that one might be losing their memory, that another is in active recovery from drug addiction and a third might be buckling under the weight of their mental health issues. The Dahls, in service of their own self-image, prefer to lie and deny.

Go past the hut at the entrance to an apartment complex off a busy street in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles. Turn left at the Aloha Room and go past the little nook with a red waterfall and a sign that reads “Volcano Mauna Loa Falls.” Don’t worry about the black panther statue. Cross a little stream that signs call the Kauai River, look for the door on the left and you’ll find the modest kitchen table that served as Ground Zero for the movie “Thelma.”
First, though, June Squibb will have to invite you in, because the table is at the entrance to her kitchen, next to a formidable glassed-in bookcase that sports an impressive collection of carefully placed volumes dominated by mysteries and thrillers written by Scandinavian authors. “The Brutalist” cinematographer Lol Crawley will be honored with the Robby Müller Award at the 54th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, which runs Jan. 30 – Feb. 9.
The award acknowledges the “artistry of an exceptional image maker,” and is given in collaboration with the Netherlands Society of Cinematographers and Andrea Müller-Schirmer, the wife of the late Dutch cinematographer Robby Müller.
The award will be accompanied by a talk from Crawley during the festival, as well as a screening of “The Brutalist,” which marks the Dutch premiere of the film.
The jury for this year’s Robby Müller Award noted: “Lol Crawley’s camera is dedicated to the story and characters in a way that is both humble and ardent. It forms a close, dynamic relationship with them. His sensual cinematography embraces the environment as unpredictable and fluid and aims to align with its flow rather than confine it to a predefined frame.

The 94-year-old June Squibb's new action movie with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score has become a streaming success. Beginning her career on Broadway in 1959, Squibb's first film role didn't come until the age of 61 in Woody Allen's Alice. During the 1990s and early 2000s, she went on to have supporting roles, but never starring, in Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence, Frank Oz' In & Out, Martin Brest's Meet Joe Black, Alexander Panye's About Schmidt, and Todd Haynes' Far from Heaven.
In 2013, Squibb reunited with director Alexander Payne for Nebraska and broke through in a big way, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. For the remainder of the 2010s and into the early 2020s, Squibb continued to appear in movies such as I'll See You in My Dreams, Love the Coopers, Other People, Father Figures, Blow the Man Down,...

Brendan Patrick Hughes’s “Dindin” is a chamber drama that revolves around four middle-aged people – a married couple and their two friends. It is based on a play that a cast member wrote and others decided to turn into a movie. All of them are theatre actors. So, the film feels almost like a play unfolding in the presence of cameras around. After all, it is basically just four people sitting across a table discussing a wide range of topics through a free-flowing conversation, shot mostly in black and white. In its limited setting, what matters are mainly the performances and the writing.
In such cases, the actors need to be skilled enough to make the conflicts seem believable or the stakes urgent. Their faces need to be lit in specific ways to reveal more details of their shifting dynamic. With its monochromatic setting, the lighting, camera angles, and composition...

Almost 35 years ago, production designer David Gropman worked on a Merchant Ivory World War II-era drama called “Mr. & Mrs. Bridge,” in which the opening sequence was in black and white. He still remembers watching dailies to that sequence and hearing director James Ivory exclaim, “What have I been waiting for all these years? It works so much better in black and white!”
“He was right,” Gropman said, laughing. “And I have longed to do a black-and-white film since then.” He finally got his wish with “Ripley,” Steven Zaillian’s Netflix limited series based on the Patricia Highsmith novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley” — although Gropman estimates that the eight-episode, seven-hour series was really “about five films” in scale and complexity.
The action begins in New York in the early 1960s and then moves to Italy’s Amalfi Coast, where a petty criminal named Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) has been tasked...

If there’s one thing June Squibb has always known, it’s that she wanted to pursue a career in acting on her own terms. She’s the first to admit that she’s stubborn, but it’s a trait that has served her well over the past seven decades as she transitioned from local theater to Broadway to television and film. Her trajectory has been so singular, in fact, that Squibb didn’t land her first leading role until age 92, when writer-director Josh Margolin approached her to play the titular part in Thelma,...

Loneliness is the subject of a poetic exploration in Rachel Lambert’s Sometimes I Think About Dying. Premiering in Sundance’s U.S. Dramatic Competition and adapted from the Oscar-shortlisted live-action short of the same name (which was based on Kevin Armento’s play killers), Lambert’s film quietly observes the life of Fran (Daisy Ridley), a woman who feels most at home in her daydreams.
Fran is too distinctively drawn to be just an avatar, but the impressions of her solitude are aching reminders of how modern life nurtures an unsettling separateness. No time was that more evident than during the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, when quarantine measures revealed the degree to which many of us live in isolation. Sometimes I Think About Dying, then, is a graceful treatise on how challenging — but liberating — it can be to make connections.

Thanksgiving doesn’t have the greatest reputation among the major American holidays. It’s a time of the year often most famous for confrontational family conversations and marketers tend to give it the cold shoulder. It’s not that the other big holidays are perfect or that it’s impossible to have a good Thanksgiving. But Thanksgiving doesn’t have any of the present-opening joys of Christmas or fun parties of Halloween to compensate for its shortcomings. It’s harder to distract one from how often this holiday is known for shouting matches and burnt turkeys more than anything else. Maybe that’s why Hollywood has often avoided making movies centered on this holiday, though The Humans, a 2021 drama directed by Stephen Karam, makes it clear there’s lots of compelling cinematic potential to be wrung out of the terrors specific to Thanksgiving.

Exclusive: 93-year-old Oscar nominee June Squibb (Nebraska) has found her first, long overdue leading role in Thelma, an upcoming “action” comedy written and directed by Josh Margolin, which has wrapped production. The actress is joined in the ensemble by Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus), Richard Roundtree (Shaft), Parker Posey (The Staircase), Clark Gregg (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange).
Margolin’s first feature, based on a real-life experience involving his grandmother, is (half-jokingly) billed as Nebraska meets Mission: Impossible. It centers on 90-year-old grandmother Thelma Post (Squibb), who gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson and sets out on a uniquely treacherous quest to reclaim what was taken from her.
Zoë Worth, a longtime collaborator of Margolin’s, and producing partner Chris Kaye started developing Thelma after reading an early draft in their writer’s group, Rock & Roll Universe. The film will be their first produced together.

Should “Inside Amy Schumer” Season 5 be considered a legacy revival? While the show’s time off the air hasn’t been quite as extensive as later-season revivals like “Arrested Development” or “The X-Files,” six and a half years can feel like an eternity in popular and political culture, especially when accompanied by a worldwide pandemic. Schumer herself must be particularly aware of the fullness of this time; when Season 4 of the show debuted in spring 2016, she was fresh off a big hit movie “Trainwreck” and a moment in the cultural zeitgeist; an ongoing Comedy Central sketch series seemed almost charmingly small-scale for such an ascendant star.
Since then, she’s starred in two more broad big-screen comedies, made her Broadway debut in Steve Martin’s “Meteor Shower,” given an underseen but excellent performance in “The Humans,” written and directed her Hulu series “Life & Beth,” co-hosted the Oscars, gotten married and had a child.

It’s no mystery why Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” is nominated for 17 Emmy Awards including comedy series, actor and guest actor and actress: a delish plot, snappy dialogue, pitch-perfect directing, and a cast to die for led by Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. They are “The Three Amigos” for the 21st century. To celebrate the series, which recently had its second season finale, why not look at some fun facts and trivia of the cast many of whom already have mantle full of honors.

Showtime has given a green light to half-hour comedy pilot Mason, from comedian Nathan Min (Joe Pera Talks To You), who also stars, Daniels (Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan), the team behind the box-office hit film Everything Everywhere All At Once, Oscar nominee Steven Yeun (Minari) and A24.
Created, executive produced and starring Min in the title role, Mason is a surrealist comedy based on Min’s real-life experiences. It revolves around a quiet man named Nathan, often misheard as “Mason,” seeking connection in a loud world.

“Nathan has brought Showtime a disarmingly funny and emotional project that feels like a punch to the gut in how astutely it conveys the trials and tribulations of being a human today.

"It isn't just the characters who have gone insane, but almost the environment itself." Can films from the early days of cinema still influence movies being made today? Of course they can! And they still do all the time. But this is still worth examining in closer detail. This video essay is from Thomas Flight, a popular YouTuber creating videos about cinema. It's titled "The Art Movement That Changed Film Forever", but it's really about German Expressionism - and how this cinema movement still influences films today. Obviously Flight was inpsired by the cinematography in Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth, and wanted to make this video about why it looks this way. He references three iconic films from the 1920s: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, and Metropolis; then goes on to connect how this distinct visual style is still evident in modern films from Blade Runner (both...

In the last few days of every Tony Awards season, prognosticators have the tendency to overthink some races that are likely done deals. That could be the case this year with the Featured Actress in a Play category, where frontrunner Kenita R. Miller (“for colored girls”) has dominated the conversation since the revival of Ntozake Shange’s classic choreopoem started previews. But a large number of our users think Uzo Aduba (“Clyde’s”) will pull off an upset, while dozens are picking Rachel Dratch (“Potus”). Those mavericks may be overlooking the real spoiler in the category, though, in past Tony winner Phylicia Rashad, who returned to Broadway in Dominique Morisseau’s Best Play nominee “Skeleton Crew.”
Right now, Miller leads the field to take home the Tony for her “resplendent” performance as the Lady in Red. The actress not only delivered an acclaimed turn, but she took on the role while pregnant,...

It’s possible that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) might have somehow been an even bigger box-office sensation had it not been released during a global pandemic, but all things considered, it still did pretty well for itself. Monetary success aside, this is a rousing and thrilling superhero tale that manages to feel self-contained as it compulsorily sets the stage for a whole bunch of upcoming MCU plot twists. The 4K and Blu-ray versions include a smattering of extras, including bloopers, panel discussions with the guest villains, and behind-the-scenes featurettes.
Also available:
“C’mon C’mon” (Lionsgate): Mike Mills’ disarmingly lovely look at family ties offers Joaquin Phoenix one of the more subdued and humane characters he’s ever played.
“Death on the Nile” (20th Century Studios): Toast Kenneth Branagh’s second Agatha Christie adaptation with enough champagne to fill the… oh, you know.

The 37th Annual Independent Spirit Awards took place on Sunday, returning to an in-person format following last year’s virtual ceremony. Many of the biggest names in the independent film community made the trek out to the beach in Santa Monica with the hopes of taking home the most coveted prizes in indie film. While the Spirit Awards typically take place the week before the Oscars, this year’s unique Covid-influenced awards season calendar meant that they were held nearly a month in advance. Hollywood couple Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally served as emcees of the proceedings.
This year’s class of nominees draws from films largely shut out from the Oscars, with indie hits like Oscar nominee “The Lost Daughter,” “C’mon C’mon,” and “Zola” racking up the most nominations. “The Lost Daughter” cleaned up, with three wins for Netflix including Best Feature and Best Director Maggie Gyllenhaal. Oscar no-show...

SEE2022 Oscars guild awards scorecard: ‘King Richard’ reigns over SAG and Ace Eddies to grab early lead
These awards are unique in that they are limited to American films made for under $20 million; films made outside the United States are eligible for Best International Feature. And the awards are decided in two stages. In the first round, committees of film professionals, experts, and critics choose the nominees. In the second round, the entire Film Independent membership gets to vote for the winners. Members include industry insiders, but also anyone in the general public who wish to pay yearly dues starting at $95 per year.

The stars came out in full glam to celebrate the 2022 Independent Film Spirit Awards.
Co-hosted by married comedy duo Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman, the latest awards show leading up to the 97th Academy Awards kicked off on Sunday, March 6, marking a return to pre-covid red carpet proceedings in Santa Monica, Calif.
Nominees Maggie Gyllenhaal, Simon Rex, Taylour Paige, Jessie Buckley, Ruth Negga, and Troy Kotsur stunned on the red carpet, as distributor A24 marked its big night with 13 total nominations for films including “C’mon, C’mon,” “Zola,” “The Humans,” and “Red Rocket.” Notably, four women were featured in the Best Director category this year, including Gyllenhaal for “The Lost Daughter,” Janicza Bravo for “Zola,” Lauren Hadaway for “The Novice,” and Ninja Thyberg for “Pleasure.”
Hosts Mullally and Offerman promised to be a “little rowdy” during the ceremony, while assuring “it’ll mainly be legitimate cinematic discourse,” per a press statement.

Three awards ceremonies are taking place the weekend of March 5. On Saturday, a double dose of the Art Directors Guild (Adg) and American Cinema Editors Awards (Ace Eddies), and on Sunday, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, airing on IFC.
Paying special attention to Adg and Ace Eddies since there’s Oscar crossover, we’re expecting a couple of surprises at both. On the Adg side, “Dune” and “Nightmare Alley” should reign triumphant, but “Don’t Look Up” may overcome fellow Netflix property “The Lost Daughter.”
At Ace Eddies, there’s a possible upset on the drama side in the favor of “King Richard’s” Pamela Martin, besting Joe Walker for “Dune.” On the other hand, “Tick, Tick … Boom!” is expected to sneak past “Licorice Pizza.”
What’s most interesting is that there is very little to no presence of the presumed Oscar frontrunners this weekend, including Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,...
