The Traitors: The Alan Cumming-hosted mystery game series gets a Season 3 renewal
Image
Make room on your conspiracy whiteboard and grab some string and push-pins from your local craft store because The Traitors is getting a Season 3 renewal! Peacock wants more of the Alan Cumming-hosted unscripted series, which bends the brains of cast members and audiences alike with a psychological mystery. The Traitors Season 3 renewal arrives mid-way through the show’s second season.

The setup for The Traitors is quite genius. The series finds a group of reality stars and celebrities playing a murder mystery game in a castle in the Scottish Highlands. With instructions from the always-fabulous Alan Cumming, the group must work together on a wealth of missions to establish a prize fund worth up to a total of $250,000. While some contestants are Faithful, others are Traitors, aiming to eliminate the Faithful and steal the prize for themselves. Under the cloak of night, the Traitors murder the Faithful one at...

Tunisian Murder Mystery ‘Ashkal’ Triumphs At Fespaco

Tunisian director Youssef Chebbi’s investigative thriller Ashkal has won the top prize at the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (Fespaco). The festival, which ran from February 25 to March 4, unfolds every two years in Burkina Faso’s capital of Ouagadougou and is regarded as Africa’s equivalent of Cannes. Chebbi’s murder mystery revolves around a series of killings at a construction site on the outskirts of the Tunisian capital of Tunis. The film world premiered at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and then played a raft of other festivals including Toronto and London. The Fespaco jury head, producer Dora Bouchoucha, praised the film’s pairing of a strong aesthetic with a politically tuned-in storyline. Burkinabe filmmaker Apolline Traore won the Silver Stallion for Sira, about a woman kidnapped by Jihadists, and Kenyan director Angela Wamai took home the Bronze Stallion for Shimoni,...

Ciaran Hinds, Lily Franky, Ryo Nishikido Board Jessie Buckley’s ‘Cottontail’ (Exclusive)
Image
Lily Franky, Ciaran Hinds and Ryô Nishikido (“Hospitality Department”) have joined the cast of Oscar-nominated “Philomena” producer Gabrielle Tana’s forthcoming film “Cottontail,” starring Jessie Buckley.

BAFTA “Brit to Watch” director Patrick Dickinson directs. Japanese actor Franky replaces Ken Watanabe, who was previously attached to star in the pic. Also joining the cast are Japanese Academy Award winner Tae Kimura (“Zero Focus”) and Rin Takanashi (“Like Someone in Love”).

London’s WestEnd Films is handling world sales, and will continue to sell the film at this week’s European Film Market.

“Cottontail” tells the heart-rending story of Kenzaburo (Franky) who, after his wife Akiko (Kimura) passes away in Japan, travels with his estranged son Toshi (Nishikido) and daughter-in-law Satsuki (Takanashi) to the Lake District in England — the land of Beatrix Potter, whose charming tales of Peter Rabbit captivated Akiko as a child.

Akiko had always hoped to travel there one day with Kenzaburo,...

‘Phantom Thread’ Actor Lesley Manville Cast as Princess Margaret in ‘The Crown’
Image
Lesley Manville, Oscar nominated for “Phantom Thread,” will take over from Helena Bonham-Carter in the role of Princess Margaret in the final season of Netflix series “The Crown,” winner of several Emmys.

“I could not be happier to be playing Princess Margaret,” Manville said in a quote on “The Crown” Twitter feed. “The baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses and I really don’t want to let the side down. Furthermore to play siblings with my dear friend Imelda Staunton will be nothing short of a complete joy.”

Staunton was announced in the role of Queen Elizabeth II in January, replacing Olivia Coleman. Vanessa Kirby played Princess Margaret, the Queen’s younger sister, in the first two seasons, before Bonham-Carter took over in the third.

Manville scored Oscar and BAFTA supporting actress nominations for her role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread.” She is the narrator...
