Vampire movies have had a resurgence in recent years, spanning across all kinds of genres. What We Do in the Shadows proved vampire comedies were a viable option 10 years ago, and films like Renfield and Vampires vs The Bronx have followed suit. Vampires returned to comic book movies with last year's Deadpool & Wolverine, and we’ve even seen entire films set around one section of Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel, like The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Perhaps Nosferatu is the most memorable modern vampire movie, once again retelling Stoker’s original story, with a Germanic-gothic spin from Robert Eggers. Wherever vampire films can be found, Dracula isn’t far behind. But a forgotten 2018 movie put an original new spin on Dracula never before seen in any film, and if its 80% Rotten Tomatoes score is anything to go by, it's worth checking out.

On March 15, a horror film is leaving Netflix that fright fans should scramble to see — just not alone, as Stephen King warns. The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a highly unusual shocker about a mysterious corpse that causes problems for a pair of father-son coroners. Their postmortem produces baffling clues to her origins that they will have to make sense of before her curse can take over their lives.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter director André Øvredal tackled this startlingly original story that Stephen King compared favorably with Alien and the early work of body horror king David Cronenberg. The gruesome autopsy triggers a series of supernatural events, while also provoking a painful dissection of the coroners' personal history. Excellent FX complements equally great performances, the best of which is delivered by the eerily lively Jane Doe herself.

Thanks to recent films like Renfield, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Abigail, and Nosferatu, Dracula is more popular than ever. The famous vampiric Count has risen from the dead in pop culture. Alongside his new cinematic nightmares, the Prince of Darkness' merchandise has been sucking the life out of horror collectors for the last number of years. This has included appeal collections, Funko Pops, and action figures. Now, Dracula has met his match as Neca has introduced their latest figure based on Peter Cushing's Doctor Van Helsing.

Whenever Christopher Nolan starts a new production, you can bet that the cast will be absolutely stacked. Like, come on, save some actors for the rest of Hollywood! Per THR and Deadline, Mia Goth (MaxXxine) and Corey Hawkins (The Last Voyage of the Demeter) have joined the cast of The Odyssey.
As you might expect, there are no official details on who Goth or Hawkins may be playing in the film, but THR does note that Goth’s role “may not even involve speaking at all.” They say she could be playing a siren, one of those enchanting creatures whose song lures sailors to their deaths, or perhaps a goddess or even a statue. Hrm.
The embarrassment of riches which makes up the cast of The Odyssey includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel,...

Last year, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman) went into production, with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now, Lawrence has confirmed to the folks at Collider that post-production work on the film is almost complete, and he’s “super happy” with it.
An adaptation of The Long Walk has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. It was announced at the start of the year that Robert Eggers will be following up Nosferatu with Werwulf for Focus Features, which has already been dated for release in 2026.
Set in the 13th century and being described as a medieval horror movie, Robert Eggers’ Werwulf will howl its way into theaters from Focus Features on Christmas Day 2026.
On stage at a recent event, Eggers promised – or warned, perhaps – that Werwulf is shaping up to be the darkest horror movie he’s ever made – and that’s saying something!
Eggers teases, “It’s a medieval werewolf movie. And it’s also the darkest thing I’ve ever written. By far.”
The filmmaker co-wrote the screenplay for Werwulf alongside Sjón, the Icelandic poet and novelist who previously co-wrote the Viking movie The Northman with Eggers. Sjón has also been announced as the co-writer for a new Labyrinth movie being directed by Eggers.

Is there anyone as disappointed in their adaptations as master of horror Clive Barker? Okay, part time Wizard and full-time curmudgeon Alan Moore is probably the most upset at his work being adapted but Clive is a close second. The sad part is that while he has had fewer of his novels or short stories adapted than someone like Stephen King, he has played a part in more of them and been let down more often than not. He also didn’t have a great beginning with film as his first screenplay Transmutations or Underworld he ended up hating. He first adapted his own work with Rawhead Rex in 1986 and hated the end product there too. Other than 1987’s Hellraiser which he wrote and directed, there hasn’t been something that he was disappointed in or was butchered by the studio and he has become a bit jaded. His films...

David Dastmalchian will always be known for his roles in Oppenheimer and The Suicide Squad, but the famous actor also has his sights set on another iconic role. Dastmalchian has been in a number of projects over the years, including joining major franchises like DC and Marvel, but he's also taken on roles in smaller horror movies like Late Night with the Devil and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Dastmalchian's second acting credit came in 2008 when he starred as Joker's Thug in The Dark Knight, and he also featured as Dwight Pollard in two episodes of Gotham. Collider's Aidan Kelley recently caught up with Dastmalchian at the Saturn Awards, and he expressed interest in stepping out from playing a henchman and putting on the makeup for Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime himself:...

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a chilling horror film that delivers a uniquely atmospheric take on the classic Dracula mythos. Directed by André Øvredal, the movie adapts a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula—the doomed voyage of the Demeter, a Russian schooner transporting a mysterious cargo from Carpathia to England. This narrative decision to focus on a small portion of the novel allows the film to dive deep into the slow-building dread and claustrophobia of being trapped at sea with an unspeakable horror.

In 1992, Francis Ford Coppola released one of the first truly fresh and original iterations of Dracula in decades. His feverish version of Bram Stoker's tragic romance is a rare combination of high camp and powerful fantasy, and love it or hate it, Keanu Reeve's performance as Jonathan Harker is an integral part of this divisive film. Reeves' version of the leading man has been attacked by critics and horror fans alike — but in reality, he delivers exactly what the story requires.
Across the countless adaptations of Dracula, the story's center of gravity is the love triangle between the pure-hearted Mina, her fiancé Jonathan Harker, and the seductive vampire. A whole section of the Wikipedia page for Bram Stoker's Dracula is devoted to negative reviews of Keanu Reeves' performance, but because Harker is meant to be a naive third wheel, the good-natured hunk was perfectly cast.

Nosferatu has given Robert Eggers a lot to celebrate. The 2024 horror remake starring Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp, and Nicholas Hoult became the director's highest-grossing movie following its impressive Christmas week release and has since gone on to gross $90 million domestically and $156 million worldwide. With an incredible box office run and rave reviews, Nosferatu has certainly given Eggers a blank check, and he is cashing it in on another iconic monster archetype. He is moving from vampires to werewolves with his next feature film.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Eggers is following up Nosferatu with an original film, Werwulf, which he co-wrote with Sjón, his co-writer on The Northman. While plot details are being kept under wraps, sources close to THR say the story is set in 13th-century England and features dialogue that was true to the period and will have translations and annotations for those uninitiated to Old English. Focus Features has already dated Werwulf for theatrical release on Christmas Day 2026.
The Hollywood Reporter details, “Eggers wrote Werwulf with Sjón, who co-wrote heady Viking saga The Northman with the filmmaker. While details are scarce, sources say the story is set in 13th century England. The script also features dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English.”
“Initially, Eggers was planning on shooting the feature in black and white, but that is no longer the case,” THR’s exclusive report also notes. “Suffice to say that considering the setting and the dialect, Eggers is promising another deep dive into a muddy,...

It’s no secret that Universal has been having a tough time bringing their classic Universal Monsters back to the big screen for a new generation in recent years, with films including Renfield, The Last Voyage of the Demeter and Abigail failing to turn a profit at the box office. The sole success story of the bunch was Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, a bold take on the classic monster tale that scared up $144 million on a Blumhouse budget of just $7 million.
Whannell is back at the box office with Wolf Man for Blumhouse and Universal, another fresh take on a legendary monster from the Universal catalogue. The new movie’s production budget is a reported $25 million, quite a bit higher than the cost of The Invisible Man back in 2020. That means it’ll have to make more to become profitable, and it’s not off to a great start so far.

Despite The Invisible Man being a box office and critical hit that relaunched the Universal Monsters in a way the Dark Universe failed, director Leigh Whannell has no desire to make a sequel.
The Invisible Man opened in theaters on February 28, 2020, and despite only playing in theaters for three weeks before they shut down for nearly a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the movie managed to earn $144.5 million at the worldwide box office off of just a $7 million budget. With positive word of mouth from critics, Whannell became the go-to director to reimagine the classic Universal Monsters with a 21st-century spin, a trend he is continuing with Wolf Man.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about the release of Wolf Man, Whannell was asked about the possibility of a sequel to 2020's The Invisible Man. Whannell acknowledges that Universal Pictures might want to produce more Invisible Man movies, but he...

Since his directorial debut over two decades ago, André Øvredal has steadily built an impressive filmography, mostly working within the horror genre. After his first feature film, Future Murder, in 2000, the Norwegian filmmaker built a name for himself over a decade later, eventually directing popular films like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Last Voyage of the Demeter, with the latter hoping to find a place among the best Dracula movies of all time.
Despite working his way up to Hollywood productions, Øvredal is not yet a household name, but the signs of him becoming one are there, especially with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 in the works. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is by far his most famous film, earning over $104 million worldwide when it was released in 2019 (via Box Office Mojo), and the sequel has the potential to earn even more.

Stories mutate over time, adapting to both storytellers and their audience in often unpredictable ways. This is precisely why folks will still flock to creature features about monsters they’ve seen a million times before, as it’s always fun to find out how filmmakers have managed to update the source material. And when it comes to classic monsters that have gone through cinematic makeovers, it’s hard to compete with the good-old vampire.
From foreign sex symbols to zombie-like hordes and even mindless bat-monsters, vampires have proven to be an oddly versatile creature for filmmakers of every disposition. And in honor of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu remake revamping one of the most iconic depictions of blood-sucking ghouls in cinema history, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest vampire designs in horror!

In 2024, Nosferatu made waves in cinemas as an incredible retelling of the century-old masterpiece of the same name. However, the movie is plagued with fascinating origins and legal troubles as the movie is basically a rip-off of the original Bram Stoker tale of Dracula. With only a few names and plot points moved around and changed, the studio tried to have Nosferatu fly under the radar of legality. However, that didn't happen, and the Bram Stoker estate attempted to have every copy of the film destroyed. Luckily, various copies survived, and due to the film being in the public domain, now anyone can see the original glorious vampire masterpiece, which is Nosferatu.

Big Nick (Gerard Butler) is back in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and the long-awaited sequel won the weekend box office with an estimated $15.5 million domestically (per The Numbers). Director Christian Gudegast’s heist film managed to hold off No. 2 Mufasa: The Lion King ($13.2 million) to finally end the Disney movie’s reign at No. 1. However, the new chapter in the Mouse House’s circle of life did cross the half-a-billion-dollar mark over the weekend as the animated adventure’s worldwide total now stands at $539.7 million.
Nevertheless, the weekend belonged to O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Butler’s big-screen reunion, which opened nearly seven years after the initial Den of Thieves. The sequel’s $15.5 million was only slightly better than the original’s debut of $15.2 million back in 2018, and both films in the heist franchise have garnered “B+” CinemaScores. However, Den of Thieves 2 easily outperformed its predecessor on Rotten Tomatoes.

Michael B. Jordan is armed and ready for action in a new image from director Ryan Coogler's Sinners. Jordan leads the Sinners cast in dual-roles as twin brothers Elijah and Elias Smoke, with Hailee Steinfeld and Jack O'Connell also starring. As was teased in the first trailer, the movie follows Elijah and Elias as they return to their hometown, only to find themselves facing off against a terrifying evil. It has been theorized that this evil is vampires, but no such creature has actually been shown in any marketing materials, keeping the threat shrouded in mystery.

Get ready to feel the fear in more ways than one with Blumhouse's next Universal Monsters film. Director Leigh Whannell has been leading the revival of the classic horror icons with his films, the 2020 reimagination of The Invisible Man starring Elizabeth Moss, and his upcoming release, Wolf Man, starring Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott. Whannell has already proved that he can take spooky characters that audiences have largely become desensitized to and turn them into horror villains that haunt fans' nightmares, but now the Australian director is taking it a step further with his new film, inspired by David Cronenberg's famous body-horror flick The Fly.
As Whannell told Empire, he's interested in showcasing "the tragedy of the human body falling apart" in his version of the classic scary story, and this time he's pulling all the stops. Wolf Man is celebrating its upcoming multisensory screenings with a new, creepy poster,...

Quick Links Modern Horror Movies Love to Hide the Monsters Nosferatu Shows Its Count Orlok From the First Act
The following contains spoilers for Nosferatu, in theaters now.
Fans have been waiting for Robert Eggers' Nosferatu for some time. They have seen many vampire movies and shows over the years try to tackle Vlad the Impaler and his turn as Dracula. Now, Eggers leans more into the folk and gothic horror aspect of the character as he reinterprets the 1922 Nosferatu movie.
Interestingly, as with many films involving creature designs, viewers were wondering beforehand if Eggers would follow a creature feature trope that many properties lean into: hiding the monster until the end. Nosferatu does not adopt this approach, and it makes this movie even better due to the main plot driver: toxic love.

A disgusting, blood-obsessed, bat-like creature haunts the corridors of your home. You spend each waking moment terrified of its return in the night. Your friends are dropping like flies and there is nothing you can do to stop it. This might sound like Robert Eggers' latest historical horror film, Nosferatu, but it is indeed a description of The Last Voyage of The Demeter. Both films adapted, at least in part, from Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Last Voyage of The Demeter chronicles the final days of The Demeter's crew as they begin to realize the cargo they carry is eating them alive. Overlooked in the horror space, the film boasts gorgeous nautical sets, a killer score by Bear McCreary, and an uber-talented ensemble cast that includes the likes of Corey Hawkins, Liam Cunningham, Aisling Franciosi, and David Dastmalchian.

Nosferatu's Count Orlok is one of the darkest depictions of vampires to date. He's definitely a departure from romanticized versions of the monster, particularly the glamorized Cullen family from the Twilight movies.
Director Robert Eggers said Nosferatu is his response to "sympathetic vampires" like Edward Cullen. Speaking to Radio Times, Eggers asserted the need to bring back truly evil vampires in modern adaptations. "As the cinematic vampire has evolved, he's become more and more and more sympathetic," he mused. "You know, first sort of sad and isolated, and then an anti-hero, and finally, climaxing with like Edward Cullen kind of stuff where he's not threatening. And so, how do you make a vampire scary again? And I said, well, I guess I'm gonna have to find out what vampires were like when people actually believed that they were real."

With Christmas firmly in the rearview mirror, 2024 is nearly in the books. More importantly, several new releases also found their footing to help close out the year on a high note, with director Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu," in particular, having a stellar opening. The long-awaited new take on the vampire classic absolutely blew by expectations, delivering a big win for horror as the new year approaches.

Nosferatu director Robert Eggers has explained why his version of the iconic vampire features a new distinct feature. The image of 1922's Nosferatu's Count Orlok is iconic, whose monstrous appearance drastically differs from that of the more human-looking Count Dracula. With a bald head, sharp fingernails, and buck fangs like a bat, the image of Count Orlok is ingrained in popular culture, so it made the remake's decision to hide his appearance in the trailers so riveting as it suggested a drastic reimagining of the character. Audiences were likely shocked to see this monstrous vampire with a prominent mustache.
While speaking with Variety, Eggers explained why he gave Count Orlok, played by Bill Skarsgard, the defining facial feature that no other version of the character has used. It came down to a combination of historical accuracy, as Transylvanian noblemen like Orlok would have had a mustache. It also drew...

Nosferatu director Robert Eggers addresses Count Orlok drinking blood from the chest and not from the neck in his new horror movie. After The Northman (2022), Eggers returns to horror with his upcoming adaptation of the 1922 German film of the same name. Bill Skarsgård leads the Nosferatu cast as the villainous Orlok, a vampire who becomes transfixed with a local, haunted young woman, and the movie features some key differences from more traditional vampire stories, including how the monster drains blood from his victims.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Eggers explains why Count Orlok drinks blood from his victims' chests in Nosferatu, explaining that it was all about leaning more into a folkloric take on a vampire. According to the director, the old folk tales he drew from describe victims feeling vampire attacks in their chests rather than their necks. Check out Eggers' explanation below:

In 2024, we have no need to try and make vampires happen. They have already happened for at least a century, and they're very much still happening: stories about vampires have saturated just about every medium there is. Weirdly, though, we may have to work a little harder to make the vampire happen again — as in the most legendary bloodsucker of all: Dracula.
In fairness, it may not be Dracula himself whose popularity is waning, but rather movies about him. Ever since his screen debut in the lost film "Dracula's Death" in 1921, barely a decade has gone by without some iteration of the Count turning up in cinemas, which is partially why the character has undergone so many various iterations. Like all fictional creations who've been built to last, Dracula endures by embracing change. Yet there can always been too much of a good thing; the last several films to prominently...

Bill Skarsgård, the young actor who rose to fame after playing the horror icon Pennywise in the modern adaptation of Stephen King's It, has now given life to yet another classic horror monster., that of Nosferatu in Robert Eggers' 2024 remake of the German classic by F.W. Murnau. But, as iconic as these roles have been, Skarsgård has grown a little tired of playing the same kind of evil character. And, despite being so good at it, he may never do it again.
Skarsgård recently spoke to Empire about his latest role in the horror film, which will be internationally released on December 25. Although Skarsgård will surely help turn Nosferatu into a modern horror icon, it seems he doesn't really want to play another character like that again:
"When we were done with it, I was like, 'I never want to play something this evil again. I never want to put on prosthetics again'.

Robert Eggers bought himself instant star status in the horror world with his feature debut "The Witch" in 2016. Now, after taking a detour into the realm of big-budget, historical epic action with "The Northman," the acclaimed director is back with a new horror movie in the form of "Nosferatu," Eggers' long-awaited fresh take on F.W. Murnau's 1922 vampire classic. The question is, can this gothic vampire tale take a big enough bite out of the Christmas box office?
Focus Features' "Nosferatu" is currently eyeing an opening weekend between $12 and $16 million, per Box Office Theory. But that's only part of the equation here. The film is hitting theaters on Christmas Day, which falls on a Wednesday this year. Much like "Moana 2" did over its record-breaking five-day run over Thanksgiving, Eggers' latest will have a long holiday weekend to make its money.
