‘Moonrise’ Had More Than Just Netflix to Blame for It to Become a Sleeper Anime
Image
Released this month, Moonrise, an adventure sci-fi anime, has been one of those hidden gems, sparking mixed reactions among fans. There is no denying that the animation is beautiful; the action scenes are like fireworks or something that pull you in. With such dazzling animation featuring some compelling characters, this anime has the potential to be the next big thing.

But here’s the issue- for all of that, it feels and looks kind of buried. What’s stopping Moonrise from eliciting more hype? Yeah, part of the popularity issue to consider is that Netflix didn’t promote Moonrise very well. But there’s more to the story than poor promotion.

From some questionable storytelling choices to the sheer amount of anime dropping at the same time, there are some reasons why this hidden gem of an anime isn’t shining as brightly as it should.

“Worst marketing ever”: Wit Studios Is Signing Up for ‘Moonrise’s’ Failure Because of Netflix’s Release Pattern
Image
Wit Studio’s new original anime Moonrise is finally coming out on April 10, 2025, and on paper, it’s a total banger. We’re talking about a high-stakes sci-fi war drama set on the Moon, directed by Attack on Titan‘s Masashi Koizuka, character designs by Fullmetal Alchemist legend Hiromu Arakawa, and the mind behind Psycho-Pass and Fafner, Tou Ubukata, writing the script.

It’s got political tension. It’s got ethical dilemmas. It’s got a revenge plot. It’s even got the Moon. What can possibly go wrong? Well, everything, if you’re Netflix. Despite being one of the most promising anime originals in recent memory, fans are already throwing shade at Moonrise‘s release plan.

And they’re not even wrong. Because even with all the talent that went into it, Moonrise is getting the dreaded Netflix binge-drop treatment,...

10 Signs An Anime is Starting to Run Out of Steam
Image
Whether an anime is short and sweet or long and epic, its story must stay strong until the very end. Ideally, plot beats should be evenly spaced, ensuring no part feels rushed or dragged out. A rushed story leaves plot threads and characters underdeveloped, while a drawn-out one results in thinly written episodes. Worst of all, the anime might lose steam partway through.

While a drop in quality is subjective, an anime running out of steam is far more obvious. When a series runs out of ideas and fails to end on time, cracks appear in the narrative. Even the most popular anime can suffer from this, weakening an otherwise excellent story. The best anime may lose steam in one or two ways, while more mediocre series often struggle in multiple areas, compounding the issue.

Plenty of anime shows have the same aesthetic and themes as Metal Gear Solid, offering complex storylines, military technology, and larger-than-life characters.
