Scriptwriter Paul Cornell based this serial upon his 1995 Doctor Who novel, "Human Nature", making this two-parter the first time in series history that an original Doctor Who novel was adapted for television.
Consideration was given to attempting the story entirely without the use of computer effects, but this was ultimately abandoned.
The bulk of this episode takes place 5 years to the day in advance of the armistice signed with Germany, ending WWI.
