The Blind Side is a biographical sports drama starring Sandra Bullock, which experienced a bit of resurgence in recent years. The film received critical acclaim and earned Bullock an Oscar win but became controversial because of some of its tropes and the complex real-life events that ensued after its release.

The castings underscore the heat the project is generating now that it is back on track after being sidelined for a year. Animals is heading towards an April start in Los Angeles. Denzel Washington isn’t upset about not being nominated for his role as Macrinus in “Gladiator II,” the actor told the New York Times in an interview published Saturday. “I was sitting there smiling, going: Look at you. On the day you didn’t get a nomination for an Oscar, you’re working on ‘Othello’ on Broadway,” he explained.
“Are you kidding me? Awww. Oh, I’m so upset. Listen, I’ve been around too long,” Washington added. “I’m getting wiser, working on talking less and learning to understand more — and that’s exciting.”
“Gladiator II” takes place 20 years after the original 2000 film and tells the story of Lucius, played by Paul Mescal. Mescal is joined by Pedro Pascal as Marcus Acacius.

Surrealist filmmaker David Lynch, who passed away on Jan. 15, 2025, at age 78, leaves behind one of the most unique filmographies of any director in cinematic history, releasing 10 feature films between 1977 and 2006. But arguably Lynch's most popular contribution to popular culture wasn't a film at all, but a TV show: Twin Peaks. Premiering on ABC in 1990 before being abruptly canceled after its second season in 1991, the supernatural mystery series centers on FBI agent Dale Cooper's (Kyle MacLachlan) investigation into the murder of local prom queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) in a small Washington town.
The series became an instant pop culture phenomenon, spawning a polarizing prequel film, an acclaimed third season released on Showtime in 2017, and various other media, from books to music. The Commanders will visit the Bucs in the nightcap of an NFL triple header on the first Sunday of the 2025 playoffs.
When the Washington Commanders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers square off in the Wild Card Weekend of the NFL playoffs, the Bucs will be the home team by virtue of the fact that they won the NFC South, but the Commanders come in with the better record. Tampa Bay finished the regular season at 10-7, while Washington was 12-5. However, aided by home-field advantage, the Bucs are favored by three points. With dynamic quarterbacks like Baker Mayfield and Jayden Daniels running the offenses, it should be an exciting matchup. The game will kick off at 8 p.m. Et on NBC and you can watch all of the action with a subscription to Sling TV.

Fans continue to be entertained by Gladiator as Ridley Scott's historical epic series sets more records. Thanks to Gladiator II's success, the revered titular franchise passes a new milestone at the box office.
Via Collider, Scott's Gladiator films have grossed over $900 million since the series debuted in 2000. Since Gladiator II premiered last November, the sequel has proved itself worthy, nearing its own milestone as it's earned just under $450 million ($449.8 million at the time of writing). The sequel is now over $15 million behind what Gladiator tallied following its debut ($465.2 million worldwide). However, it's unlikely to equal or eclipse what its predecessor made, given its run in cinemas is almost over and the movie is available digitally. Overall, the Gladiator duology has accumulated $915 million globally.

Denzel Washington's hopes of earning a third Academy Award for his performance in Gladiator 2 seem a lot less likely now. Denzel Washington is often regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation, with two historic Academy Awards to his name. Having previously won the Best Supporting Academy Award for Glory and Best Actor in Training Day, Washington was poised to potentially earn a third Oscar for his mesmerizing performance as the charming and manipulative Macrinus in Gladiator 2.
Although that film's overall award potential seemed blunted, Denzel's nomination at the Golden Globes kept hope for his victory alive. However, the latest nomination announcements from another historically important Oscar precursor didn't include Washington in the running for Best Supporting Actor. This might have dashed those Oscar hopes for Washington's Gladiator 2 performance, as the actor earning a win at the 97th Academy Awards — while not...

Johnny Depp opened up about how he would hide from Amber Heard’s violence ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard for $50M after a 2018 Washington Post op-ed where she described herself as a survivor of domestic abuse. Though Depp wasn’t named, he claims the article destroyed his reputation and career. Heard countered with a $100M lawsuit, alleging the actor defamed her through his legal team.
During the trial in Virginia, Depp painted a grim picture of their marriage. He described Heard’s anger escalating into physical violence—slaps, shoves, and even a remote hurled at his head. “I would remove myself from the situation,” he testified. “If she didn’t allow me to walk away, I’d lock myself in the bathroom or anywhere she couldn’t get in.”
The actor compared his coping mechanism to his childhood, alluding he learned early on to retreat from volatile situations.

President Joe Biden is concluding his time in office by naming his last round of Presidential Medal of Freedom honorees, and they include two iconic Hollywood names. Entertainment Weekly reports that two-time Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington and five-time Emmy-winner Michael J. Fox are among this year’s Medal of Freedom recipients. Nineteen people in total are included in this year’s honor.
The award is the nation’s highest civilian honor. It is presented to people who have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.”
The White House released a statement regarding the honorees that read: “President Biden believes great leaders keep the faith, give everyone a fair shot, and put decency above all else. These 19 Americans are great leaders because they are good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world.

Three decades ago, Quentin Tarantino and Denzel Washington had a falling out during production of a film that only one of them is credited for. Both Tarantino and Washington have had significantly important careers in Hollywood. Quentin Tarantino's movies are some of the best in modern Hollywood, while Denzel Washington is commonly considered one of the best actors of all time. Despite the popularity of both of them, neither has been credited for working on the same film, for a particular reason.
Despite not "officially" working together, Denzel Washington has expressed interest in doing it. In an interview on the Friday Night With Jonathan Ross show (via YouTube), Tarantino even said he would be honored to have Denzel Washington play a role in one of his films. Given that interview was back in 2009, the two of them have still never worked together - though it almost happened. In 1995, a film...

Gary Larson's The Far Side may be beloved by all fans of all ages, but the comic has always dealt with some dark subject matter, from animals eating humans alive to worldwide thermonuclear war. Indeed, war is a recurring theme in Larson's comics, and for very good reason, given his own childhood experiences.

Denzel Washington might kick a lot of asses in The Equalizer franchise, and he might be causing a lot of trouble in Gladiator 2 thanks to his portrayal of the manipulative Macrinus, but behind the camera he’s actually a pretty chill dude. He’s got a wife, a few kids, and now, when he’s not acting, Washington can probably be found officiating a wedding or two, as he recently got baptized and received his minister's license in a ceremony that took place at Kelly Temple in New York City.
Archbishop Christopher Bryant took to Facebook (seen below) to post about the joyous occasion, saying, "We celebrate the addition of Minister Denzel Washington into the clergy, having received his minister's license in the Church of God in Christ today, in a truly uplifting moment." Denzel Washington's career is mostly a model of consistency. Once he officially broke through with his Academy Award-nominated performance as South African activist Steve Biko in "Cry Freedom," he deftly alternated between prestige roles and strictly commercial parts. There were missteps, but you can at least understand why he signed on to a buddy comedy like "Heart Condition;" he hadn't won his Oscar for "Glory" just yet, and the opportunity to act opposite a tremendously talented performer like Bob Hoskins surely looked appealing in theory. The movie is dreadful, but neither Washington nor Hoskins phone it in.
And yet there was a sense among some in 1992 that Washington's brilliantly multifaceted performance in Spike Lee's "Malcolm X" would put an end to such frivolities as "Heart Condition" and "Ricochet." It's intriguing to consider what might've happened had the Academy not determined that '92 was the year to honor the...

A new release this month on Netflix has been getting mixed reviews but it’s one we should all watch. That’s despite our rating the movie as one to miss when we gave you the three best new Netflix movies to watch (and two to skip) in December 2024. As a spoiler, the reason we used to skip The Six Triple Eight wasn’t that it’s not a good movie, it was more about the late December timing of the release.
The Six Triple Eight was released in selected cinemas in early December and became available on Netflix on Friday, December 20. It has a strong cast and relates an important story set in World War II. That's part of the reason why it should be a must-watch.

Denzel Washington is currently riding high on the success of Gladiator II, which has not only become the highest-grossing film of his career, but it's also garnering significant awards buzz. He's already picked up Critics Choice and Golden Globe Award nominations for his supporting turn and some believe an Oscar nomination could be a lock. Washington doesn't need a reason for anyone to rediscover his films, but the interest in him is at a high at the moment, which could be why one of his signature films, 2004's Man on Fire, has become a hit once again on streaming.

Denzel Washington is having a huge career year, which is deserved after his decades of work in the industry. Ridley Scott's historical epic Gladiator II, in which Washington played Macrinus, became the highest-grossing movie in the actor's career. He was nominated for both a Critics Choice Award and a Golden Globe award for his work in the film, and is expected to get an Oscar nomination next month. Awards have oft recognized Washington's work as such, as he has won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor, for Glory and Training Day, respectively.
That said, not all of Washington's work has been met with such overwhelming praise. Though he has had some notably critically acclaimed work, the actor's Rotten Tomatoes scores have also struggled at points. Denzel Washington is one of the most celebrated actors of his generation. He has been acting for decades, and has been nominated for multiple Oscars along the way, including winning awards for Glory and Training Day. Contributing his talents to movies like Fences and Malcolm X, Washington's career is characterized by powerful drama. He recently set a career achievement through Gladiator II, as the movie became the highest-grossing within his filmography. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his work in Gladiator II, for playing Macrinus.
Ryan Reynolds is, in some ways, a very different actor than Washington. He is primarily known for comedy, frequenting movies like Free Guy and the like. Like Washington, 2024 has also been a fairly significant year for Reynolds' career. Most notably, he reprised his role as Deadpool for Deadpool & Wolverine, the first of the Deadpool movies to be officially part of the MCU.

Let’s break up the tornado of fiascoes that Disney has been drowning in since 2019.
MCU’s Avengers: Endgame was followed by a troubling phase that left the fans more distraught than ever. Star Wars never found itself in a more ugly controversy than right now with The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew. Johnny Depp’s booting from the Pirates franchise marked the end of a significant IP for Disney that could’ve covered the losses incurred by Marvel and Star Wars.

If Disney was set on a path of self-destruction, it could not have looked better than this.

News has emerged that ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ might see the return of Johnny Depp as the beloved Captain Jack Sparrow.
Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer behind the franchise, revealed earlier to EW that Disney is developing two separate scripts for the franchise’s future.
While one script aims to reboot the series with a fresh cast, another is geared towards creating a female-led story with Margot Robbie potentially at the helm.
The big question that fans are eager to have answered is whether Johnny Depp will reprise his iconic role.
According to Variety, Disney hasn’t closed the door on Depp’s involvement and is considering a script that could facilitate his return, depending on negotiations with the star.
It’s noteworthy that Disney had previously distanced itself from Depp following allegations of spousal abuse published in Amber Heard’s Washington Post op-ed.

Denzel Washington is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most respected actors. Having built a grand career defined by powerhouse performances and critical acclaim, his influence expands beyond domestic boundaries. Yet, despite all the fame he has achieved, the actor has never been a box office king, like his contemporaries.

Recently, his collaboration with Ridley Scott has made it to the top of his list when it comes to his highest box office gross. On the other hand, his second-highest film was also a Scott-helmed film, released 17 years ago.

The success of Gladiator II, although still in its early stages, has boosted the careers of everyone involved. Some of them, like director Ridley Scott and star Denzel Washington, have been working for decades. But despite their significant achievements, Gladiator II is among their biggest hits. In fact, for Washington, it’s his biggest hit ever, having recently overtaken American Gangster at the global box office. Incidentally, that film was directed by Scott as well. Having begun his career in the 1970s, the 86-year-old Scott is now firmly among the highest-grossing filmmakers in the history of the medium. And Gladiator II has only pushed him further up the rankings.

While auteur Tim Burton doesn’t want to revisit projects like Edward Scissorhands for any potential sequels, he said he feels positive he’ll return to the beloved film’s leading man, Johnny Depp.
“There are certain films I don’t want to make a sequel to,” he said at the Marrakech International Film Festival following the box office success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, per IndieWire. “I didn’t want to make a sequel to [Scissorhands] because it felt like a one-off thing. I didn’t want to have a sequel for The Nightmare Before Christmas because it also felt like a one-off thing. Certain things are best left on their own and that for me is one of them.”
When asked if there would be further collaborations with frequent screen partner Depp — whom he’s directed in a slate of films including Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd and Ed Wood — he answered,...

Spike Lee argues that Denzel Washington should’ve won Best Actor for their 1992 biopic, and explains why exactly he lost. Washington was among the nominees when the Oscars for Best Actor were handed out in 1992, having given a powerful performance as Malcolm X in Lee’s unconventional portrait of the slain civil rights leader. But when Oscar night rolled around, Washington was left empty-handed. Instead, Al Pacino took the gold for his performance as a blind man in Scent of a Woman. The controversial decision continues to draw arguments even 30 years after the awards were officially handed out.
Debate rages on about Pacino’s controversial 1992 win over Washington, and Lee knows exactly where he falls in that argument, telling The Realest Podcast Ever that Washington’s loss was “egregious” while going on to explain how the Academy sometimes passes over worthy nominees to reward people they previously snubbed. Using a basketball metaphor,...

Denzel Washington is by far one of the greatest actors of our generation, but even the best have some duds. The Little Things, released in theaters and on streaming in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, is a star-studded thriller that failed to enrapture audiences in its serial killer mystery. Featuring some head-scratching performances and a far too self-serious story, despite being so audacious, not even Washington could save The Little Things from becoming a forgotten part of the actor's recent filmography. Well, audiences can find that out for themselves before it leaves Netflix by the end of November.
The Little Things is set to leave Netflix by December 1, before it arrives back at its original streaming home, Max. The neo-noir period thriller certainly has its fans, so it is good to know that the Washington-led film will still have a place in the vast streaming world. The Little Things also...
