How Kevin Smith Rescued His Religious Comedy ‘Dogma’ From the Devil and Got It Back Into Theaters
Image
Kevin Smith’s “Dogma” is back.

After touring the film to sold-out crowds earlier this year, Smith’s controversial 1999 feature returns to theaters everywhere June 5 via Iconic Films, complete with a Q&a that was recorded at the first stop of the tour. What makes the movie’s resurrection so miraculous is the fact that the film, which stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as a pair of fallen angels looking to make hell on earth, had been out-of-print and downright impossible to stream for years.

In fact, until recently, it had been under the control of Harvey Weinstein. That’s right – a movie about angels had long been trapped by a man many see as the devil.

How “Dogma” made its way back to cinemas, on more screens than it did in 1999, is just as dramatic and unexpected as anything in the movie.

Lost in limbo

Back in 2022, we talked to Kevin Smith about “Dogma.

Gary Jensen, Stunt Coordinator on ‘The Usual Suspects’ and ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,’ Dies at 74
Image
Gary Jensen, a stunt coordinator who collaborated with Bryan Singer on The Usual Suspects and the first two X-Men films and with Kevin Smith on Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and four other movies, has died. He was 74.

Jensen recently spent two months in the hospital for back surgery and died April 11 at his home in Acton, California, his daughter-in-law Laura Jensen told The Hollywood Reporter.

He did stunts on films including Tron (1982), The Beastmaster (1982), Independence Day (1983), Hoosiers (1986), Peacemaker (1990), The Rookie (1990), In the Line of Fire (1993) and Due Date (2010).

Jensen also worked with Singer on Apt Pupil (1998) and with Smith on Dogma (1999), Clerks II (2006), Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008) and Red State (2011), and he was a coordinator on 14 Perry Mason telefilms at NBC from 1989-94.

Born in San Francisco on Dec. 11, 1950, Gary Peter Jensen graduated from Chico High School in 1969, where his 100-yard dash record still stands,...

15 Years Ago, Bruce Willis' Clash With Kevin Smith Resulted In A Big Box Office Flop
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"I know the real story. One guy wouldn't even sit for a f**kin' poster shoot." Those are the words of director Kevin Smith, speaking with Marc Maron on a January 2011 episode of his podcast "Wtf." Smith was coming off of his 2010 studio comedy "Cop Out," which starred "Die Hard" legend Bruce Willis and "SNL" alum Tracy Morgan as a pair of odd-couple cops. Needless to say, Smith had a tough time making the film. Also worth saying, Smith wasn't disheartened because of Morgan. "Were it not for Tracy, I might've killed myself or someone else in the making of that movie," Smith added.

Smith, who made himself known to the world with his beloved 1994 hit indie "Clerks," was coming off of...

Walmart Acquires the Mall From George Romero's Original 'Dawn of the Dead'
Image
The relentless wheel of capitalism has claimed another victim. Featured in George A. Romero's Dawn of The Dead, the iconic Monroeville Mall in Pennsylvania has officially been purchased by Walmart — and any horror fan worth their rock salt isn't happy about the imminent desecration of this monument to Romero's timeless work.

Per Bloody Disgusting, Pittsburgh's Action News 4 confirmed today that Walmart had acquired the mall in a $34 million deal — a particularly nasty sting given that Feb. 4 is also Romero's birthday. Alongside Cypress Equities, Walmart revealed in an official statement that they planned to "re-imagine Monroeville Mall into a new retail and commercial destination," hoping to use the space for a variety of public establishments such as retail businesses, restaurants, entertainment facilities, and hospitality centers. Cypress CEO Chris Maguire also revealed intentions to adjust their plans to the needs of the local community, stating: "We’ll do our higher-level...

Monroeville Mall: Walmart Just Purchased the Iconic ‘Dawn of the Dead’ Filming Location
Image
Almost 50 years ago, the late horror master George A. Romero forever immortalized Pennsylvania’s Monroeville Mall as a piece of horror history, filming his classic masterpiece Dawn of the Dead inside the real-life mall. Crazy enough, the mall has remained operational after all these decades. Even crazier, we’ve learned that Walmart just purchased the property.

Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reports today, on George A. Romero’s birthday of all days, that Walmart has been confirmed as the buyer and will manage the site with Cypress Equities.

Walmart told the news station in an official statement, “Walmart did purchase the Monroeville Mall and is very interested in being part of any future redevelopment of this site. Walmart is working with Cypress on mall operations and potential redevelopment of the site.”

As part of the $34 million deal, Walmart and Cypress will work together to “re-imagine Monroeville Mall into a new retail and commercial destination,...

Kevin Smith Recalls Voicing a Stormtrooper in Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Image
In 2015, writer, director and podcaster Kevin Smith was lucky enough to play a voice in a Star Wars film, but Smith admitted he wasnt sure which stormtrooper he actually voiced. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Smith talked about doing voice work in J.J. Abrams The Force Awakens.

J.J. was kind enough to let me do a voice for a stormtrooper. And he had a bunch of lines written, so he was like I dont know which one youre gonna be. Just say all 10 of these, the Mallrats director recalled. Flash forward to when the movie was released, Smith said he got a little confused about which part he played.

Kevin Smith Names the Gross Scene He Wants The Oscars to Play When He Dies
Image
While a lot of people plan their own funerals to save their families the pain and stress, Kevin Smith has planned his own In Memoriam section at the Oscars to save the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences the trouble although they might not be happy about his choice. As well as appearing on-screen as Silent Bob for 30 years, Kevin Smith is responsible for directing some of the most beloved, gross-out stoner movies of all-time. Clerks, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Zack and Miri Make a Porno are among some of Smith's most-beloved and vulgar movies. But, Smith's chosen scene from Clerks II trumps them all as the grossest, and perhaps the most on-brand choice for his moment.

The 4:30 Movie Review: Kevin Smith Channels John Hughes And Starts Getting His Groove Back
Image
Kevin Smith will always hold a special place in my heart as one of the filmmakers who defined my formative years in cinema. "Clerks," "Mallrats," "Chasing Amy," "Dogma," and even the silly "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" were packed full of hilarious yet immature laughs and pop culture references that tickled my funny bone and my geek gland. But ever since he tried to make his own Judd Apatow movie with "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," which made him feel like he ruined Seth Rogen's career at the time, he's struggled to re-capture the comedic voice that once defined him.

"Jay & Silent Bob Reboot" was a clumsy return to Kevin Smith's stoner slacker duo, and while "Clerks III" had a meaningful emotional core inspired by the filmmaker's real life brush with death and a meta narrative about the beginning of his film career, the movie ultimately...

The McU's F-Bomb Count Reaches New Heights Thanks To Deadpool & Wolverine
Image
Marvel Studios never ventured into R-rated territory before the naughty Merc with a Mouth came slicing through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The comic book movie house kept things PG-13, though they did manage to let their first f-bomb ever into "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." Of course, all of that relatively clean language that Captain America reluctantly defended in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" gets tossed right out the window with "Deadpool & Wolverine," which drops a plethora of profanity and other vicious vernacular.

Yes, "Deadpool & Wolverine" doesn't shy away from dropping many f-bombs. Apparently the folks at Discussing Film kept a tally, and the magic swear word is unleashed 118 times, bringing the total count of f-bombs in the MCU to 119. That's not a bad number at all, and it's enough to surpass the word's usage in "Deadpool 2," probably because Wolverine is throwing it around quite a bit in this movie too.

Kevin Smith loses MPAA battle over The 4:30 Movie’s R rating
Image
Kevin Smith has had his share of clashes throughout his career, with everybody from Bruce Willis to Southwest Airlines. While some have thankfully been squashed, none has been more consistent than his battles with the MPA (formerly the MPAA). Less than one month after it was announced that his next flick, The 4:30 Movie, would be receiving an R, Kevin Smith detailed why the MPA has gone forward with their choice.

Appearing on the Inside of You podcast, Kevin Smith said his latest issue with the MPA arose because he strictly meant to make a PG-13 movie instead of the Rs he is usually associated with. “There’s three things I know how to do in this world: I can play foosball really well, I know how to walk two German Shepherds on a tandem leash, and I know how to make an R-rated movie. I said, so I know...

Kevin Smith Battles With MPA Over the Rating of His Next Movie, The 4:30 Movie
Image
The MPA gave Kevin Smith's The 4:30 Movie an R rating, despite Smith's intentions of making a PG-13 film. This rating dispute with the MPA is unusual for Smith, who has successfully appealed past ratings for his films. Despite no f-bombs, sex, or nudity, The 4:30 Movie was rated R due to "pervasive innuendo" by the MPA.

Actor and director Kevin Smith has lost a major battle with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) over the age rating for his next project, The 4:30 Movie. Smith shot to fame in the 90s indie cinema scene with his self-funded comedy Clerks. Since then, Smith has become a fan favorite director, creating Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Dogma, and Mallrats, among many others.

Kevin Smith's The 4:30 Movie was given an R-rating by the MPA, a decision which Smith has already appealed. However, Smith has already appealed the decision, and he revealed...

Quick Links Tusk Marks A True Departure From Kevin Smith’s Usual Style Tusk Features An All-Time Great Michael Parks Performance There Was Still One Major Questionable Decision That Held the Film Back

Kevin Smith has proven to have staying power in the world of film-making whether his films reach large audiences or not. However, one of his least-discussed films came about during a period of his career most movie-goers would consider a “slump,” but Tusk itself would suggest that it certainly wasn’t a creative slump. Holding just a 46% Critics Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes -- and an even worse 36% audience score -- Tusk is one of Smith's lower-rated outings.

Regardless, Tusk offers a genuinely fascinating look into the work of a primarily comic director entering an entirely new genre, and it should be viewed as a success as far as creativity goes. While there are a few very...

What Happened To Justin Long After Accepted?
Image
Justin Long’s rise reached its peak in the late 2000s following his starring role in Accepted, but his career has since undergone an interesting transformation. With over 100 credits, Long has been working steadily for 20 years. His career began strong, with a small role in the 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest. Long played his first starring role as Darry in the slasher classic Jeepers Creepers in 2001 and appeared in a significant role as Justin in 2004’s Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.

Justin Long’s first leading role in a major Hollywood film came in 2006 when he starred in the slacker comedy Accepted. Accepted follows a young underachiever who chooses to create his own university after being rejected by numerous colleges, only to find himself in over his head when other college rejects begin applying. The film, which relied heavily on improvisation, owes much of its lasting appeal to a talented central cast of rising stars.

Weekend Box Office: Ant-Man 3 suffers worst second week drop in MCU history
Image
When a Marvel film hits theaters, they are events. People eagerly anticipate the continuing adventures of their favorite Marvel characters and tend to go back week after week after week giving the films legs that other movies would be envious of. Even though Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania won its second weekend with $32.2 million, that number represents a 70% drop off which is officially the largest second week decline in Marvel Cinematic Universe history. Something I did not expect when I said it would “Easily win the weekend.” Of course this threequel had further to fall than its predecessors, as it opened to a franchise best $106.1 million while the original Ant-Man opened with $57.2 million and lost 56.5% in its second weekend and its sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp opened to $75.8 million and lost 61.6% in its second weekend.

So the question now is: why did this one hit such a massive wall in its second weekend?...

Brandon Routh Changed How He Chose His Roles To 'Uphold An Image' Of Superman
Image
There are some roles that, as an actor, have to be more daunting than others. Particularly when you're talking about iconic characters that have already been pretty much perfected, like Sean Connery as James Bond, as an example. Sure, others can find some success, but sometimes it's just a shadow a little too big to step out from. That was pretty much always going to be the case for Brandon Routh when he tried to follow in the footsteps of Christopher Reeve as Superman with his performance in 2006's "Superman Returns."

Routh was very much aware of this challenge, but eager to take it on anyway. And when you put on that cape, working with a director in Bryan Singer who, at the time, was one of the hottest names in superhero cinema coming off the success of "X-Men" and "X2: X-Men United," at least part of you has...

Hulu New Releases: January 2023
Image
If January sets the tone for any streamer’s year then 2023 is certainly going to be the Year of True Crime on Hulu. That’s right, Hulu’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlight by several new true crime docuseries (and one charmingly goofy animated hero).

The true crime docuseries fest gets started with Death in the Dorms on Jan. 5. That will be followed by How I Caught My Killer on Jan. 12, and Web of Death on Jan. 19. The first is a six-episode series that will follow the real life case of murders at UCLA, while the latter two will both present several different stories.

It’s not just all true crime in January for Hulu. Jan. 9 sees the arrival of Koala Man, an animated series that envisions an Australian crime fighter of the same name. Also premiering is season 2 of How I Met Your Mather (Jan. 24) and superhero drama Extraordinary (Jan.

Makeup Effects Legend Tom Savini On Creepshow's 40th Anniversary And George Romero's Legacy [Exclusive Interview]

Wild Eye Releasing recently released a special edition Blu-ray of the 2015 documentary "Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini," a look at the storied life and career of makeup effects legend Tom Savini. Directed by Jason Baker, himself a protege of Savini's, the doc takes you on a tour of the man's life, from his childhood to serving as a combat photographer during the Vietnam War to becoming a dad. Of course, the film spends a lot of time focused on his vast filmography, which includes creating ghoulish effects on classics like "Dawn of the Dead," "Friday the 13th," "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2," the "Night of the Living Dead" remake (which he directed), and many others. It also puts a spotlight on Savini's colorful acting career in numerous movies, such as "From Dusk Till Dawn" and "Zack and Miri Make a Porno."

The Daily Stream: Zack And Miri Make A Porno Is A Pitch-Perfect Romantic Comedy
Image
The movie: "Zack and Miri Make a Porno"

Where you can stream it: Prime Video

The Pitch: Writer and director Kevin Smith brings his brand of crass but heartfelt comedy to a romantic story about two best friends, Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) who decide to make a porn film as a last-ditch effort to pay their rent and utility bills. While Smith usually prefers his performers to stick to the script because he writes such great dialogue, working with a bunch of actors who had come from the Judd Apatow world of improv acting allowed him to loosen up his storytelling style and let his performers go wild. The result is a heartwarming, absolutely hilarious romantic comedy that also might be one of the filthiest and most wholesome movies ever made.

As Zack and Miri try to make their movie, they meet a ragtag crew of sweet deviants who help them.

The 14 Best Against Type Performances In Cinematic History
Image
In the TV and film industry, "typecasting" refers to when an actor is consistently given the same kinds of roles. Sometimes, all it takes is a single memorable role for an actor to be cast as a similar character on a regular basis. It can often be a source of frustration for actors who want to branch out and demonstrate their versatility by playing a wide range of characters but are stuck with a label that prevents them from doing so. However, some actors seem to have no problems being constantly cast as the "mad scientist," the "loveable dufus," the "strong silent hero," or another type. After all, a regular paycheck is a regular paycheck.

Some actors have been lucky enough to make a successful career out of sticking to a certain genre only to branch out into roles completely unlike their previous work — often to critical acclaim. Here, we...

Périphériques, Les Mondes de Flynne (2022)
Amazon Prime Video New Releases: October 2022
Périphériques, Les Mondes de Flynne (2022)
With its list of new releases for October 2022, Amazon Prime Video isn’t fully aboard the spooky season train but it is at least spooky adjacent.

The biggest release this month is Prime Video original series The Peripheral on Oct. 21. While not outright horror, it does sound more than a little unnerving. Based on a 2014 sci-fi novel by William Gibson, The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a woman in a near-future society who may have just discovered an alternate reality. Fittingly, Westworld‘s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy serve as executive producers.

The other TV series of note in October is The Devil’s Hour on Oct. 28. This British thriller comes form Steven Moffat and tells the story of a woman who wakes up at 3:33 a.m. (the devil’s hour) each night to receive a disturbing vision.

October is home to a couple of Amazon movies of note as well.

Kevin Smith: Harvey Weinstein Offered to Fund ‘Dogma’ Series Before Holding Film ‘Hostage’
Image
Kevin Smith is coming clean about what really happened with the rights to his 1999 hit film “Dogma.”

The religious satire starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Chris Rock, and Alan Rickman is currently being “held hostage” by producer Harvey Weinstein, according to the filmmaker. The film is not available to stream online or purchase digitally, while rare Blu-rays sell for roughly 100.

“In order to tell the story, unfortunately, I’m gonna have to say the name that nobody wants to hear anymore. But of course, Harvey Weinstein figures into the story,” Smith told The Wrap when asked about the fate of box office and critical success “Dogma.”

After then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner allegedly told Smith to “not make ‘Dogma'” as it was “too hot button” of a film, Weinstein greenlit the film anyways and eventually sold it to himself and released the movie through his company Shining Excalibur.

Smith said...

Kevin Smith Movies Ranked from Worst to Best
Kevin Smith
Regardless of what you might think of his movies, his worldview, or anything else, filmmaker Kevin Smith remains a genuine maverick in the industry. His first movie, Clerks, was made for 27,000 with local actors in and around the south New Jersey environs of his youth, which inspired the movie. And it remains a genuine milestone of independent filmmaking. It helped pave the way for more DIY filmmakers to emerge outside the confines of the studio systems, with its improvised, lo-fi aesthetic being seen today in movies filmed on iPhones.

In the nearly 30 years since Clerks was released, Smith has continued to write and direct his own features while also occasionally working as a director-for-hire on larger studio projects. The core movies of his canon, known as the View Askewniverse and featuring Jason Mewes and Smith himself as anchor characters Jay and Silent Bob, predated the Marvel Cinematic Universe by more than a decade.

Kevin Smith Explains How Harvey Weinstein Is Holding ‘Dogma’ Hostage: ‘My Movie About Heaven Is in Limbo’
Image
If the opening of “Clerks III” this week has you feeling nostalgic about the earlier films of writer/director Kevin Smith, you’ll hit a dead-end when searching for one of his greatest accomplishments – 1999’s religious satire “Dogma.”

“Dogma,” which stars Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Alan Rickman and Chris Rock, is currently not available to stream anywhere or buy digitally, and the out-of-print Blu-ray frequently sells for around 100 on the secondary market. While religious groups were bent out of shape by the movie, it was warmly received by critics (Roger Ebert gave it three-and-a-half out of four stars) and made 44 million at the box office (it only cost 10 million). The success of “Dogma” makes its obscurity even more puzzling.

When I asked Smith why, he said it was a “great question.” “In order to tell the story unfortunately, I’m gonna have to say the name that nobody wants to hear anymore.

Kevin Smith's latest film, "Clerks III," catches up with the characters of Dante (Brian O'Halloran) and Randall (Jeff Anderson) after their brief dalliance with low-level employment at a burger joint in 2006's "Clerks II." At the end of that film, Dante and Randall found themselves directionless after spending their 40s in minimum-wage jobs. Dante left his fiancée, and the pair found themselves in jail with the perpetual stoners Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Smith). Dante and Randall found that their way out of their rut was to go back. Using weed money from Jay and Silent Bob, Dante and Randall merely bought the convenience store they felt trapped in back in the original "Clerks."

It was a happy ending for Dante and Randall, but also a declaration from Smith. Staying put (critics might say stagnating) was, Smith declared, a form of triumph.

In "Clerks III," however, Dante...

Clerks 3: Release Date, Cast And More
Image
(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)

Nearly 30 years after its cinematic debut, I assure you, the Quick Stop is open once again thanks to "Clerks III." After trying to manifest this project in a number of different ways since the release of the second film in 2006, fan-favorite filmmaker Kevin Smith is finally presenting the third chapter in Dante Hicks and Randal Graves' story in a theater near you. And interestingly enough, this movie brings the New Jersey native all the way back to his first chapter as the characters that kickstarted his career back in the early '90s are now making their own movie about working in a convenience store.

To avoid the real tragedy of showing up at the theater when you're not even supposed to be there today,...

‘The Office’ Star Craig Robinson Evacuated From Comedy Club Due to ‘Active Shooter’ Incident
Image
Craig Robinson, the star of “The Office” and “Hot Tub Time Machine,” was evacuated from the Charlotte, N.C. comedy club where he was scheduled to perform on Saturday night after a man brandished a gun and demanded everyone leave the venue. He later discharged the firearm, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, which reports that there were no injuries and the suspect is in custody. The club was evacuated before the gun was fired, police said.

Robinson shared the experience on social media. “I’m safe,” he said in a video message on Instagram. “I’m cool. It was wild I was in the green room and they’re like ‘everybody get out.’ It was a moment for sure.”

Robinson posted the video while watching a Big Time Rush concert at the Metro Credit Union Amphitheater, saying that he had been told to go to the nearby theater while...

Clerks 3: Everything We Know So Far
Kevin Smith, Jeff Anderson, Rosario Dawson, Jason Mewes, and Brian O'Halloran in Clerks II (2006)
Following the release of "Clerks II" in 2006, fan-favorite writer/director/podcaster Kevin Smith started branching out from his View Askewniverse in 2008 with projects like "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," "Cop Out," and "Red State." However, it never felt like the cinematic universe that birthed Jay and Silent Bob was ever that far away from the New Jersey native. Not only did he release 2013's "Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie!" and eventually "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" in 2019, but he also continued to tease a third (and final?) chapter for the cult classic saga of "Clerks" in the 14 years since we last saw...

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in Serial noceurs (2005)
The Surprising Character Nicolas Cage Almost Played In Wedding Crashers
Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in Serial noceurs (2005)
Back in 2005, "Wedding Crashers" reignited the R-rated comedy. In fact, it was one of the most successful comedies of the 2000s and a firm favorite of single guys everywhere. It also paved the way for a raunchy resurgence, with the likes of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" following in its footsteps.

"Wedding Crashers" tells the story of John (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) — two divorce mediators who crash weddings with the purpose of meeting and seducing women. It obviously all goes awry when they begin to fall in love ... but while Wilson and Vaughn make a formidable...

‘Magic: The Gathering’ Netflix Animated Series Casts Brandon Routh in Lead Role
Image
The animated “Magic: The Gathering” series at Netflix has cast Brandon Routh in the lead role.

The announcement was made during Wizards of the Coast’s Magic Showcase 2021 stream. Plot details on the series are still being kept under wraps, but it was confirmed that Routh will voice the character Gideon Jura. It was previously announced that the show expands on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are the game’s magic-wielding heroes and villains.

In addition, it was announced that a prequel novel by Django Wexler will be released in conjunction with the series, which is slated to debut in 2022.

The novel, which hails from Del Rey Books, sees Planeswalkers Gideon Jura and Jace Beleren adventuring together as they right wrongs across the multiverse. But with very different insights into what they witness, it is safe to say that the partnership is under quite a bit of strain.

Routh...

Patton Oswalt in M.O.D.O.K. (2021)
Hulu New Releases: May 2021
Patton Oswalt in M.O.D.O.K. (2021)
Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.

The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.

In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

New on Netflix: May 2021 Releases
Image
It’s safe to say that the Covid content drought is just about over. Netflix prides itself on being the most, let’s say, prolific streaming service in the game. With its list of new releases for May 2021 it’s once again revealing why.

There is a lot going on for Netflix this month and it all starts with some high profile original films. Zack Snyder’s latest zombie effort Army of the Dead premieres on May 21. That will be preceded by Monster, the adaptation of Walter Dean Myers’ classic YA book, on May 7 and Amy Adams Rear Window-esque The Woman in the Window on May 14.

‘The Multivorce’ Animated Comedy From Kirker Butler, Scott Mosier & Kapital In Works At CBS All Access
Image
Exclusive: CBS All Access is developing The Multivorce, an adult animated TV series created by Kirker Butler (Family Guy) and Scott Mosier (The Grinch), I have learned. It hails from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS TV Studios.

Described by sources as Marriage Story mixed with Rick and Morty, The Multivorce is a half-hour animated comedy about the Gundersons, a seemingly normal American family: mother, father, three kids dealing with the complicated realities of divorce. However, instead of the kids having to spend every other weekend at their father’s shitty bachelor apartment across town, they spend every other weekend with their warrior queen mother in her very exciting (and often very dangerous) kingdom somewhere in the Multivorce.

Butler and Mosier executive produce with Kapital’s Kaplan and Dana Honor.

Mosier produced his first movie, Clerks, at age twenty-one with writer-director Kevin Smith. He went on to produce Smith’s Mallrats,...

Netflix Is Losing A Lot Of Big Movies/TV Shows Next Month

It’s the way it always is with Netflix. You get a ton of new movies and TV shows every month, but you also lose a bunch of stuff, too, as the licensing agreements expire and they hop over to another streaming platform. September will be no different in that regard, either, as the company has now announced a hefty list of titles that are set to make their exit over the coming weeks.

As always, the biggest bulk of departures will go down at the end of the month, but the days leading up to then will also see some notable movies and TV shows vanish from the site, too. And below, you can see the full list of what Netflix will be losing in September.

Kevin Smith Says Harvey Weinstein Refused to Pay Him Royalties for ‘Clerks’ (Exclusive)
Kevin Smith
Kevin Smith sold his first movie, “Clerks,” to Harvey Weinstein out of the Sundance Film Festival in 1994.

Weinstein, who ran Miramax at the time, shelled out $227,000 for the black-and-white movie set in a video store. But their agreement allowed for Smith to receive a backend if the movie became profitable.

That fall, “Clerks” grossed $3.2 million in North American theaters. And it generated tens of millions more on VHS, as it became a cult hit.

Now, in a recent interview with Variety, Smith reveals that it took Weinstein seven years to pay him back some of the royalties that he was owed. And even then, Weinstein deployed sketchy accounting tactics, like billing “Clerks” for the costs associated with renting a yacht for “Pulp Fiction” at the Cannes Film Festival.

Weinstein, who is serving 23 years in prison after being convicted in February of a criminal sex act and rape, could not be reached for comment,...

What’s Coming to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime in October 2018
Horror pics are making a return across the board as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime update their streaming platforms for the spooky season.

“The Shining” will kick off Netflix’s horror film slate, followed by “Truth or Dare” with Lucy Hale and Tyler Posey, “The Haunting of Molly Hartley,” and the Netflix original “The Haunting of Hill House.” Non-horror fans can also look forward to the addition of several big movies, including “Blazing Saddles,” “The NeverEnding Story,” and “Zack and Miri Make a Porno.” Additionally, “Marvel’s Daredevil” is returning for a third season alongside Season 2 of “Making a Murderer” and “Big Mouth.”

Hulu is upping its horror game with titles such as “American Psycho,” “Anaconda” starring Jennifer Lopez, and “The Blair Witch Project.” The films will also appear alongside some more lighthearted content, including Season 5 of “Black-ish,” Season 9 of “Bob’s Burgers,” and Season 16 of “Family Guy.”

Rounding out the list,...

Kevin Smith Donating Residuals from Weinstein-Made Movies to Women in Film
Kevin Smith, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Jeff Anderson, Brian O'Halloran, and Lisa Spoonauer in Clerks : Les Employés modèles (1994)
Kevin Smith's allegiance to Harvey Weinstein dissolved earlier this month amid reports that the now-disgraced movie mogul had sexually assaulted or harassed dozens of women in the industry over the years.

And on October 13th, the filmmaker decided to take action to show his solidarity for those who have suffered abuse – at the hands of Weinstein or otherwise.

"My entire career is tied up with this man," Smith said during his Hollywood Babble-On podcast. "It's been a weird fucking week. I just wanted to make some fucking movies, that's it.

Kevin Smith Will No Longer Profit From Weinstein Movies, Vows to Donate Residuals to Women in Film
Kevin Smith
Kevin Smith and Harvey Weinstein’s careers have been linked since the mid-1990s, when Miramax launched the young director’s career by purchasing “Clerks” at Sundance. Kevin Smith owes Weinstein his career, which has made the latter’s sexual harassment scandal all the more personal for Smith. The director explained on his “Hollywood Babble-On” podcast that in light of recent events he will no longer be accepting residuals from the films he made under Weinstein, which includes “Clerks II,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” “Jersey Girl,” and “Zack and Miri Make a Porno.”

“My entire career is tied up with the man,” Smith said. “It’s been a weird fucking week. I just wanted to make some fucking movies, that’s it. That’s why I came, that’s why I made ‘Clerks.’ And no fucking movie is worth all this. Like, my entire career, fuck it, take it.

Kevin Smith Is Donating Weinstein Movie Residuals to Women's Charity
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
As more and more women keep coming forward with their stories of sexual harassment and sexual assault at the hands of Harvey Weinstein, many of the male filmmakers and actors he's worked with over the past few decades have spoken against his actions, including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and even a brief statement from Quentin Tarantino last week. Today we have word that another filmmaker, Kevin Smith, whose career was launched with Clerks, distributed by Harvey Weinstein's Miramax, is taking it to another level. The filmmaker announced on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast that he will be donating all of the residuals from the movies he made with Harvey Weinstein to a women's charity.

After the original sexual harassment allegations surfaced earlier this month, Kevin Smith released a brief statement on Twitter, stating that Harvey Weinstein financed the first 14 years of his career, and that he "feels ashamed" that "others...

Kevin Smith on Harvey Weinstein: ‘Now I Know While I Was Profiting, Others Were in Terrible Pain’
Harvey Weinstein and Ryan Kavanaugh
Kevin Smith has joined the growing chorus of filmmakers, actors, and others within the film industry to speak up about Harvey Weinstein, who was fired yesterday after numerous accusations of sexual harassment were leveled against him.

Asked about Weinstein on Twitter, the “Clerks,” “Dogma,” and “Chasing Amy” director replied, “He financed the first 14 years of my career – and now I know while I was profiting, others were in terrible pain.”

“It makes me feel ashamed,” he added. Weinstein, then the head of Miramax, bought “Clerks” at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival and helped launch Smith’s career. They worked together for more than a decade after that, first at Miramax and then at the Weinstein Company; following the disappointing box-office returns of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” their relationship took a downturn.

Kevin Smith's Jay And Silent Bob Reboot Begins Filming This Fall
Jay and Silent Bob are finally returning to the big screen after over a decade hiatus, last appearing in Clerks II in 2006. Jay and Silent Bob are, of course, the dynamic duo created by Kevin Smith, who also plays Silent Bob, appearing in most of his movies since his very first film, Clerks, in 1994. Since Clerks, the pair have popped up in Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma, culminating an Avengers-type film that brought Smith’s entire View Askewniverse together in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The pair have been absent this past decade as Smith tried his hand at more serious fare in Jersey Girl, avoided the pair all together in Zack and Miri Make A Porno, did a studio film in Cop Out, tried horror with Red State, and got just downright bizarre with Tusk and Yoga Hosers.

16 years ago, #JayAndSilentBobStrikeBack was released in theaters. And this Fall,...

Charlie's Angels Gets The Reboot...Again
Variety is reporting that Charlie's Angels will hit the big screen again on June 7th, 2019. The film is set to be directed by Elizabeth Banks, famous for her work as Betty Brant in the original Spider-Man and as Miri in Zack and Miri Make A Porno. This would be the second feature that Elizabeth Banks has directed, the first one being Pitch Perfect 2.

The big question I have to ask is why? I haven't seen a film that Elizabeth Banks has directed so she may be a great director. This version of Charlie's Angels may be a good film. It certainly couldn't be any worse than the Drew Barrymore versions in 2000 and 2003. It would certainly be better than the reboot for ABC that occurred in 2011. But why are we looking at our third reboot of this franchise is less than twenty years? Is there really any audience for Charlie's Angels...

Judd Apatow and Kevin Smith: Filmmakers most overdue their first Oscar nomination
Continuing on with a yearly series I like to do on those deserving of Academy Award wins or nominations, it’s time to turn attention to filmmakers. Actors and actresses are the sexier group, but writers and directors are the backbone of the industry. There are plenty who have never been cited by the Academy, so that will be the focus today. I’ll be running down ten filmmakers who I feel are due a nomination. In a handful of cases, they’ll be more comedic storytellers, since Oscar voters can often overlook them. That’s a real shame in my mind, but that could be a piece for another day. Anyway, you’ll see them below, and obviously know that your own mileage may vary. So, without further delay, here goes nothing… Here now are the ten writers and/or directors most due for their first Oscar nomination: 10. Kevin Smith – Hear me out.

Kevin Smith Says Without Jeff Anderson, There Is No Clerks 3
The entire fate of Clerks 3 depends on one actor.

Lrm and Review Nation was told by Kevin Smith that Jeff Anderson was the previously unnamed actor who refused to be in Clerks 3. He was already suspected and implied by the Internet community, but this is an official confirmation by the director since the announcement of the cancellation of the film.

Anderson is well known as Randal Graves, the best friend to Dante in Clerks and Clerks II. He was the wise-ass slacker who worked in the video store, who managed to convince consistently Dante to ditch his responsibilities and get into trouble.

He reprised his role multiple times, not only in the sequel, but also in the animated series Clerks, the film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and The Flying Car short. He has also appeared in Smith’s other works, including Dogma and Zack and Miri Make a Porno.
