Lionsgate has finally launched the brand new trailer for their upcoming action-thriller Ballerina, offering a killer new look at Academy Award-nominee Ana de Armas (Knives Out; No Time to Die; Ghosted) heading into action as Eve Macarro, and it looks like her mission just got considerably more difficult than we imagined as she'll soon find herself up against Baba Yaga himself!
Yes, as the trailer reveals, The Director (Anjelica Huston) will send John Wick (Keanu Reeves) after Eve, in a last-ditch effort to stop her vendetta. John will offer her a choice, leave or die, and the battle commences. It certainly adds an interesting wrinkle to the film, as we were all previously under the assumption that Wick and Macarro would be allies and fight together, which could obviously still happen, but it looks like things will head into a different direction before the credits roll.
The film's official synopsis reads,...

It’s now only a few months until the “John Wick” franchise is back on the big screen — this time, with the Oscar-nominated Ana de Armas in the lead.
The new trailer for “Ballerina” shows de Armas in action as Eve Macarro, a Russian ballerina-turned-assassin with an eye for vengeance against the men who killed her family. But de Armas isn’t alone, as Keanu Reeves makes his anticipated return as John Wick.
“Ballerina” takes place in between “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum” and “John Wick: Chapter 4,” expanding the assassin role originally played by Unity Phelan with de Armas’ take on the character. The film comes two years since audiences saw Reeves in the fourth entry, which became the highest-grossing installment in the series with a worldwide gross of over $440 million. Altogether, the first four “John Wick” films grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

Shudder had pull for “Push,” as the all-horror-all-the-time streamer has acquired the home invasion thriller ahead of its U.S. premiere at Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, Calif. later this month. The film, directed by David Charbonier and Justin Powell, will make its exclusive debut directly on AMC Networks’ genre-focused service later this year.
“Push” stars Alicia Sanz, seen in Prime Video’s “El Cid,” and Raúl Castillo, seen in “Smile 2” and “Army of the Dead,” as a realtor and a killer, respectively. Their stand-off during an open house triggers the pregnant real estate agent into premature labor, adding another alarming layer of dread to the survival premise.
“With ‘Push,’ David and Justin continue to hone their spectacular skill for intimate, visceral suspense,” said Sam Zimmerman, Shudder’s head of programming. “After ‘Boy Behind the Door,’ we are thrilled to reteam with the dynamic duo on this frightening...

In 2023, New Line Cinema went all-in on a partnership with Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger and Barbarian’s producers at BoulderLight Pictures. New Line came out the winner in a bidding war over Weapons, which they’re planning to give a theatrical release date on January 16, 2026, and they’re also paying Cregger a sum in the eight figure range to make the movie. In addition to working with them on Weapons, New Line signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, tasking the company with developing high concept genre projects for them, and they gave a greenlight to the sci-fi thriller Companion, which was produced by BoulderLight and Cregger and released at the end of January. But while Cregger is collaborating with New Line Cinema, he’s also making a Resident Evil movie for Constantin Film – and while New Line’s parent company Warner Bros. participated in...

After seven live action movies and a short-lived Netflix television series, Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are bringing Resident Evil back to the big screen, with Zach Cregger (Barbarian) writing and directing. Several studios had been engaged in a bidding war for the project, but Deadline reports today that the property will stay at Sony.
Warner Bros. and Netflix had reportedly also been in the mix. Sony, who released all previous Re movies, will release Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil in theaters September 18, 2026.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is said to “take the title back to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games,” with Cregger and Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) writing.
“I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor,” Zach Cregger told Deadline in a statement published this afternoon.

Resident Evil is back in Sony’s hands.
The studio has won a hotly contested bidding war to nab not only the rights to the horror action movie franchise based on the popular video games, but also for the opportunity to work with hot filmmaker Zach Cregger. The studio has set a release date of Sept. 18, 2026 for the project.
Cregger, the writer-director behind acclaimed horror movie Barbarian and the upcoming ensemble piece Weapons, is attached to write and direct.
The franchise, which had called Sony label Screen Gems home since releasing the first movie in 2002, found itself in a unique position of being up for grabs in January, inciting an intense bidding war. In the end, Sony prevailed, this time via its Columbia Pictures banner, allowing for a bigger budget.

As we prepare for the 97th Academy Awards this weekend, here’s a reminder of the Oscars Cheer Moment, and the weirdest year in the body’s history.
On Valentine’s Day 2022, the American Academy of Motion Pictures unveiled a pair of awards so prestigious they could only be accurately communicated via hashtag.
#OscarsFanFavorite and #OscarsCheerMoment were the latest in a string of attempts from the world’s most famous awards body to stay popular and relevant. Dave Bautista, the performer most widely known for his role in the MCU as Drax the Destroyer, shares that he would have liked to see more of his character in the franchise. Bautista is committed to other projects today, but the actor nostalgically looks back at the role that paved a future for him in Hollywood.

It's the picture that launched a thousand rumors and frenzied meltdowns among fans. Recently, the very socially active James Gunn tweeted out a picture that promptly sent the comic book fanbase into a tailspin. Although a longtime friend and creative collaborator of Zack Snyder, the filmmaker who was last given the reins to the DC empire and famously parted ways with the franchise following the release of "Justice League" in 2017, Gunn's status as the new co-ceo of DC Studios (alongside Peter Safran) has sparked a rivalry of sorts between the two. Never mind that they actually worked together to help bring Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead" remake to life back in 2004 and, by all accounts, get along swimmingly. A combination of the very different storytelling approaches between the two directors, Gunn's crossover into the DC world with 2021's "The Suicide Squad," and that Marvel/DC rivalry stemming from...

The DC comics have spawned so many great stories and characters, and some of them got the chance to be adapted on the big and small screen. Zack Snyder was among the first filmmakers to tackle several projects in the DC Extended Universe but, as his time with the studio was done, James Gunn will take over the characters in the upcoming DC Universe.
The conversation about whose universe was better is inevitable, as Snyder has a series of devoted fans set to praise him, while Gunn has yet to impress since he's at the beginning of his long journey. However, over the years, the two filmmakers have often praised each other's work. Now, Gunn has proven the two are close in real life, as well, with a photo on Threads that's going viral on social media.

Snyder was known for directing many of the Dceu's movies, including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Zack Snyder's Justice League.
The director eventually moved away from the superhero universe to direct some of his passion projects like Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon, but that doesn't rule Snyder out from returning to the Dcu under Gunn.

The fight for Zach Cregger’s new movie is on.
In what seems to have become the first major auction of the year, an intense bidding war is underway for a reboot of Resident Evil, the horror action movie franchise based on the popular video games. Cregger is attached to write and direct.
Four studios are elbowing for the win, among them Warner Bros. and Netflix, according to sources.
Constantin Film, which has held the screen rights to the title since the late 1990s and has been behind the previous movies, will produce the reboot along with PlayStation Productions. Shay Hatten, who worked on John Wick: Chapter 4 and Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, is co-writing.
The movies, six starring Milla Jovovich plus one origin feature made during the pandemic, have been moneymakers. But Cregger is the reason studios are willing to shell out major money.

Disney's The Lion the Witch in the Wardrobe movie is 20 years old this year. Despite two sequels eventually coming out in theaters, Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the franchise never got to adapt the whole of The Chronicles of Narnia book series by C.W. Lewis. But now, enough time has passed for Netflix to try making its own set of Narnia movies, and they've hired Barbie director Greta Gerwig to helm them. While Netflix is often loathe to release its movies is theaters, her first Narnia film will get a (limited) theatrical release!
Netflix has released a few movies in theaters over the years. For instance, tick, tick…Boom!, Army of the Dead and The Power of the Dog got limited theatrical releases. But mostly, new Netflix movies drop on the streaming service and there they remain, never to be experienced on the big screen.

Olatunde Osunsanmi's new TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31" is weirdly retro in its setup, feeling reminiscent of delightfully corny B-movies of the 1980s like Peter Manoogian's low-budget time-travel lark "Eliminators." The main character is Empress Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), the genocidal tyrant of the Mirror Universe, and she has been enlisted to be part of Section 31, Starfleet's ethics-free black ops organization that handles dangerous secret missions.
The film's cast, however, is rounded out by a rogues' gallery of diverse aliens and specialists, each one enlisted to help the Empress on a vital mission to retrieve a doomsday device. There is the shapeshifter Quasi (Sam Richardson), a none-too-bright cyborg bruiser named Fuzz (Sven Ruygrok), a microscopic organism named Zeph piloting a human-sized robot (Robert Kazinsky), an ultra-seductive Deltan named Melle (Humberly Gonzalez), and Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl), a straight-laced Starfleet officer who is there to make sure...

As breakout TV star Ella Purnell looks to capitalize on her 2024 success, Tim Burton should consider making a sequel to the ill-fated Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The 2016 teen fantasy film, cut from the cloth of Harry Potter and X-Men, follows the mysterious residents of the titular home, where a group of youngsters with strange superpowers come of age, develop their skills, and embrace their peculiarities while fending off a formidable foe.
Despite scoring mixed-to-positive reviews and nearly tripling its budget at the international box office, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was shuttered before receiving its planned cinematic sequel. Now that a decade has passed and Ella Purnell has become a highly sought-after Hollywood A-lister, Tim Burton Productions and 20th Century Fox should revisit the movie and make an official sequel.

Before she was the toast of Hollywood, Ella Purnell had a starring role in Zack Snyder's 2021, Army of the Dead, and it's not the only time she's worked with the director. Army of the Dead is one of the Zack Snyder projects that feels a little bit lost to time. That's probably because it was released on Netflix in May 2021, smack-dab in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, not exactly when audiences were searching for a movie about a viral outbreak that destroys society and turns the afflicted into shambling, quarantined monsters.
It's a serviceable zombie action flick but feels a little half-baked in a few too many ways. Perhaps that's why audiences haven't attached themselves to it the same way Snyder fanboys have to movies like Justice League, Watchmen, and 300. Whatever issues the movie has, the cast isn't one of them. Ella Purnell, in particular, is a standout,...

Netflix would be wise to not only renew Star Trek: Prodigy, but also benefit from the rising star power of Ella Purnell. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 is the only current Star Trek series that boasts a perfect 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a stellar 96% audience score. Despite widespread critical and fan acclaim, and charting in Netflix's top 10 in several countries, however, Star Trek: Prodigy didn't reach the same heights in the United States, and the streamer has yet to green light Star Trek: Prodigy season 3.
Star Trek: Prodigy cast Ella Purnell as Gwyndala just as the British actress was starting to make inroads. Purnell had lead roles in Ordeal By Innocence, Sweetbitter on Starz, and Belgravia, but she began to gain fame from playing Dave Bautista's daughter in Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead and as Jackie Taylor in Showtime's hit series Yellowjackets. The highly anticipated first trailer for James Gunn’s Superman movie has been released, offering a vibrant, energetic reimagining of the iconic hero. Shot on Red Digital Cinema cameras by celebrated cinematographer Henry Braham, the film’s visual style departs significantly from Zack Snyder’s darker and more desaturated take on Superman in Man of Steel. This stylistic evolution is a hot topic among fans and filmmakers alike, sparking discussions about the creative choices behind the camera.

Both Gunn and Snyder have an affinity for Red’s large-sensor digital cinema cameras, but their approaches couldn’t be more different. The Netflix film Carry-On is a thriller that will leave audiences unsettled just before the start of the holiday season. When Tsa agent Ethan Kopek gets entangled with dangerous individuals, he'll stop at nothing to keep them from causing a disaster in the air. And what sounds like a straightforward action piece is enhanced by the actors who bring their characters to life.
One such star is Theo Rossi, the Sons of Anarchy veteran who steps into the role known only as Watcher. Rossi's character is part of the villainous crew and as the moniker suggests, he's responsible for observing everything that goes on. It sounds like a vague and possibly even boring part to play, but Cbr spoke with Rossi about how he created the character and what it's like for him to play so many darker characters, from The Penguin's Dr. Julian Rush to now this killer without a name.

Since movie theaters had to seemingly fight for their survival and relevance during and after the Covid-19 Pandemic, the theatrical experience has recently been re-evaluated as sacred and necessary, especially in the eyes of filmmakers promoting their films. Christopher Nolan's newly inked deal with Universal Pictures is a direct result of trying to preserve the movie-going experience after the fiasco of Warner Bros.'s botched release of his 2020 film Tenet. However, not every creative thinks that their work is comprised if not released in a theater.
Zack Snyder in particular had something to say about the theatrical versus streaming experience. In an interview with Wired, The 300 Director addressed his feelings on the matter, and his belief that any creative should be considered an artist whether their project is viewed on the big screen or at home, saying:

Ella Purnell had a huge 2024 as she starred in three hit shows which all received stellar reviews, and some recent announcements suggest her career is continuing in the right direction. Although she had featured in some major projects like Yellowjackets and Army of the Dead before 2024, her Fallout role felt like a massive turning point as it instantly became one of Ella Purnell's best TV shows. Her performance as Lucy MacLean instantly won over audiences, and the video game adaptation surprised everyone with its quality by creating a unique narrative while staying faithful to the source material.
Despite how impressive Fallout was, it wasn't the first time Purnell had excelled in a gaming adaptation, as she voiced Jinx in 2021's Arcane and reprised the role for its second and final season in November. Warning: there are Spoilers for every movie mentioned in this articleThe horror genre is alive and well, thanks to the wonderfully sadistic Art the Clown in his latest sequel Terrifier 3, plus other great franchise movies such as the surprisingly humorous Smile 2. One of the best elements of the horror genre is not just the actual frights and scares that audiences get from the kills and suspense, it's also when there's a plot twist that no one saw coming.
Sometimes, these surprises work extremely well. For example, when John Kramer rises from the dead in 2004's Saw, or when the hag-like creature appears in Barbarian from 2022. They were great plot twists that we never saw coming. However, despite the best intentions of all involved, there are many horror movies with a plot twist that's so obvious, that when it happens it's a let-down rather than a horrific shock.

Despite Zack Snyder's reputation as one of the biggest names in Hollywood, the writer/director has three cinematic franchises that remain incomplete. Snyder's DC movies are perhaps what the filmmaker is most known for, but he has also worked on projects outside the comic book genre. Unfortunately, the reception of Snyder's sprawling franchises has often failed to live up to the hype and his immense level of ambition. The result has been three sagas that haven't been seen through to a proper conclusion.
Zack Snyder has a long history of adapting source material into live-action projects, but he has also written and directed standalone movies. For instance, 2011's Sucker Punch was Snyder's first movie based on an original concept, rather than reworking an existing story or using established characters. Generally, Snyder has had far more success when adapting IPs, but his large back catalog has still gained him a devoted following.

With the Rebel Moon films in his rearview, Zack Snyder is set to reteam with Netflix on an untitled project on the Los Angeles Police Department, in early development at the streamer, Deadline has confirmed.

Snyder will produce alongside wife and creative partner Deborah Snyder, as well as his partner Wesley Coller for Stone Quary. Stone Quarry also produced Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves for Netflix, and debuted animated series Twilight of the Gods on the streamer in September.
