India has selected Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) as its candidate for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.

Directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Jio Studios, the Hindi film is described as a lighthearted satire on patriarchy.

It follows two brides, whose identities are hidden by an elaborate bridal head covering, who get mixed up on the eve of their wedding days, setting them on the paths of very different destinies from those they had envisaged.

A committee overseen by the Film Federation of India selected the title from 29 contenders which also included Bollywood hit Animal, Malayalam National Award winner Aattam and Cannes title All We Imagine As Light.

The latter film, directed by Payal Kapadia, had been cited in international circles as a hot contender to represent India this year, thanks to its Cannes credentials.

Indian actor Vipin Sharma is earning global acclaim for playing a trans character in Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut “Monkey Man.”

Sharma plays Alpha, the leader of a trans community known in India as hijras, who is instrumental in providing a new lease on life to Patel’s character when he’s down and out in “Monkey Man.”

Aamir Khan’s “Taare Zameen Par” (2007) was Sharma’s breakthrough role, and since then he has won plaudits for “Paan Singh Tomar,” “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Shahid” (all 2012), “Raanjhanaa” (2013), “Raman Raghav 2.0” (2016), “Paatal Lok” (2020) and “Dear Jassi” (2023).

When director Anthony Maras offered Sharma a role in “Hotel Mumbai” (2018), starring Patel, the actor accepted. “He said, ‘It’s not a very big part, but it’s a very interesting part.’ I immediately took it because it was going to make me meet Dev who I really wanted to meet,” Sharma tells Variety.

Noted artist Lalita Lajmi, the sister of Indian auteur late Guru Dutt, passed away at the age of 90. A self-taught artist, Lalita appeared played a cameo in the Aamir Khan-starrer 2007 film ‘Taare Zameen Par’, in which the superstar played an arts teacher.

The Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation took to social media to share the news of the sad demise of Lajmi.

Sharing an old picture of Lalita and her creation, it wrote in the caption, “We are deeply saddened by the news of artist Lalitha Lajmi’s passing away. Lajmi was a self-taught artist with a keen interest in classical dance. Her works had an element of melancholy and performance, as seen here in her artwork, ‘Dance of Life and Death’.”

Lajmi’s earlier works drew inspirations from her personal life and observations, while her later works reflected the hidden tension between man and woman.

Veteran actress Ratna Pathak Shah, who is known for her iconic character Maya Sarabhai from the Indian sitcom ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’ is set to make her foray in Gujarati cinema with ‘Kutch Express’. The actress called the film an “unusual opportunity”.

It is easy and comforting to get swayed by the rags-to-riches fable constructed with such contemporary diligence and zeal by first-time director Advait Chandan. But once you get to penetrate the bubble of bonhomie and get into thick of things, so to speak, you come face-to-face with an unnerving sterility.

Secret Superstar is one of those well-meaning films that keeps reminding you constantly of how well-meaning it is. Many times as I watched Advait Chandan’s panoply of tricks and treats I felt I was being offered a Christmas deal with ‘Santa’ Aamir Khan mentoring the film’s 15-year old wanna-shine Zaira Wasim whose brilliance as an actor is far more dazzling than anything that is written into this film to support her dreams.

Aamir Khan’s next big screen outing Secret Superstar, which is based around the life of Zaira Wasim, who plays a Muslim girl aspiring to be a singer. While in his previous production, Taare Zameen Par, he played the role of a schoolteacher; Aamir plays the quirky music composer Shakti Kumarr. The audience meet this outlandish character in the latest track from the film, Sexy Baliye, which has been crooned by Mika Singh and composed by Amit Trivedi.

In the song, Aamir is seen in a never seen before avatar. Donning an outlandish jacket, blonde spikes whilst dancing like a roadside Romeo, the actor yet again has not failed to surprise the audience.

Advait Chandan is all set to make his debut as a director with Secret Superstar, featuring Zaira Wasim, MeherVij and Aamir Khan.

Interestingly, before he sat in the director’s chair, Chandan Was Aamir Khan’s manager. Recalling the moment when he met Aamir for the first time he said, “I remember his first message, his first instruction and also the moment when I was introduced to him. I distinctly remember his first instruction during the shooting of Taare Zameen Par when he called me by my name and requested to arrange ice cream for the whole unit. My next call was to my mother.”

Apprehensive about reaching out to Aamir for the narration of Secret Superstar, he narrated the idea first to producer and screenwriter Kiran Rao. It was during an outdoor shoot for the film Pk when Kiran heard the story and gave Advait the go ahead to write the screenplay.

He’s well known for playing some serious characters, like Mahavir Phogat in the critically-acclaimed Dangal, and some seriously loveable ones, like Nikumbh Sir in Taare Zameen Par – but for Secret Superstar, it seems Aamir Khan has gone bad in a most interesting way.

Directed by Adavit Chandan and starring Zaira Wasim, who also appeared alongside Khan as his second daughter, Geeta Phogat in Dangal, Secret Superstar is set to be one of Khan’s more unusual roles.

“Dangal” is Disney India’s big Christmas bet, and the Aamir Khan wrestling drama starts strong. The characters are sketched with the kind of patience that can only come from a place of confidence. There are enough crowd-pleasing moments to fill an entire summer blockbuster. The soundtrack is brash and exhilarating; the songs here will dominate many workout playlists in the new year. The social commentary is not subtle, but it is forthright and consistent.

What a shame about that second half. It is rare that a film manages to undo so much of its groundwork so thoroughly in so short a span of time. The creative decisions made here amount to self-sabotage.

The Nitesh Tiwari's directorial, which tells the inspiring journey of a wrestler father Mahavir Phogat who trains his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari in wrestling in a small orthodox village of Haryana, will see Aamir playing three different ages in the film. We recently told you that Eros was launching a new franchise studio called Trinity Pictures. We just have learned that they have begun their first feature film and it is an exciting project.

Titled Sniff, the film is unique because it is a big-scale kid’s live action-adventure. The first of its kind in India!

Sniff is helmed by acclaimed director, Amole Gupte, of Taare Zameen Par and Stanley Ka Dabba fame. Following his vintage feature Bombay Velvet, Gangs of Wasseypur director Anurag Kashyap is taking a darker turn. His new film — which he wrote, produced and directed — Raman Raghav 2.0 follows notorious serial killer Raman Raghav. Over the 1960’s in Mumbai, Raghav committed various crimes including murder and assault.

With the lead killer portrayed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Manjhi – The Mountain Man), the film focuses on his new obsession, a cop (played by Vicky Kaushal) as Raghav watches and creates situations where both characters go head to head. Ahead of a Cannes premiere in Directors’ Fortnight, the first trailer has landed below for the film also featuring Vipin Sharma (Taare Zameen Par), Amruta Subhash (Killa) and winner of Miss India Earth 2013 Sobhita Dhulipala.

Raman Raghav 2.0 is set to premiere at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.

Tisca Chopra seems to quite a favourite when it comes to starring in home productions of our Bolly stars be it Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par, or Sunny Deol’s forthcoming Ghayal Once Again. But what’s even more interesting is the fact that both these films have been directed by them too.

Talking about this co-incidence, Tisca says that it’s exciting to be a part of these films and with them directing it’s all the more interesting for sure. She adds, “Being actors, they do tend to bring in a new approach so it’s nice to be working with them as co-actors and also in a different capacity with being directed by them.”

The inaugural Indian Film Festival Vietnam (Iffv) will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam from December 18 to bridge the gap between the entertainment industries of the two countries.

Three award winning filmmakers from India, producer of hit films like Saheb Biwi aur Gangster, Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns, Bullett Raja & Revolver Rani & CEO Wave Cinemas Rahul Mittra and directors Rakesh OmPrakash Mehra & Umesh Shukla will open this six-day fest, which will conclude on December 23 and be held at the National Cinema Centre in Hanoi.

A. The response has been phenomenal. Any film that Aamir Khan does, creates tremendous curiosity amongst the audience. The effort that he’s been putting into Dangal seems to be 10x more than some of his previous films. That’s the perception that’s been creating in the media.

Sonakshi Sinha, who is currently judging the reality singing show Indian Idol Junior 2, has been enthralled by the performances of the kids on the show. The makers are celebrating Parents Day on the show and all the contestants were singing songs as a ode to their parents.

As per the sources, Sonakshi started crying almost inconsolable recently on the sets of the show. One of the top 9 contestants Nahid, performed on the song ‘Meri Maa’ from the movie Taare Zameen Par. His performance left everyone spellbound especially Sonakshi.

Kabir Khan created a brilliant climax scene for Bajrangi Bhaijaan. People from India and Pakistan converged on both sides in an attempt to set Pavan Kumar Chaturvedi free. Apparently, there was a movie contest where winners were being given their free tickets. The film critics and assorted media was there too, on invitation. However, one had to push through the crowd to get to the front only to be told by the usher that we would have to enter with the tickets.

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, who made his directorial debut with Taare Zameen Par in 2007 will be returning to directing with Barf.

At an interview, when asked him about the film, he said, "I will direct at some point. I am not planning to make it now. I have bought the rights of that and I am going to make it."

Further ask him if it is an adoption and he says, "Barf is an original script. The thing is if I get into making a film, then I can't act for 2-3 years. As it is my film comes once in two years and if I direct, I will become once in four years.

When asked him if he will be acting in the film or no he said, "No, there is no role for me, I will only be directing it."
