Mubi is expanding its global theatrical footprint, and it is hiring a seasoned indie film vet to lead the charge. Mubi has hired Arianna Bocco, the former president of IFC Films, to join the company as its SVP of Global Distribution, the company announced Tuesday, January 7.
Bocco spent 16 years at IFC Films, leaving in 2023 (she was elevated to the role of president in 2020) amid major changes to the indie distributor that resulted in a slew of executive departures.
In her new role, Bocco will lead the international distribution of Mubi’s titles, helping to expand its foreign footprint theatrically. Mark Boxer, who currently leads the U.S. distribution team and also worked with Bocco at IFC Films, will continue in that role. Some of the titles she’ll be working on to start include Kelly Reichardt’s “The Mastermind” and Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother.”

Earlier this year, Suzanne Collins announced The Hunger Games series would be expanding, and her Sunrise On The Reaping prequel will shed light on an all-new Hunger Games—this time the second Quarter Quell. While much of the new Hunger Games book has been kept under wraps, its plot is likely to revolve around Haymitch Abernathy's time in the arena. This marks an exciting addition to Collins' Hunger Games franchise, and the second book in the series, Catching Fire, has already shared a glimpse at the games that will be shown throughout Sunrise On The Reaping.
This prequel will create a greater depth of understanding into the fan-favorite character, and Haymitch's Hunger Games are known to be the reason for his alcohol dependency in the later books. The second Quarter Quell is widely known to be the bloodiest Hunger Games in history, as twice the amount of tributes entered the arena that year.

The forthcoming remake of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” prepares to take flight with director Matthew Warchus boarding the production.
Tony and Olivier award winner Warchus will direct the film, based on the classic children’s story about a magical flying car, from a script by Tony winner Enda Walsh (“Small Things Like These”).
The new movie, which Eon Productions and Amazon MGM Studios announced earlier this month, is in the early stages of development. The project builds on the partnership between the studio and the “James Bond” producers amid their search for the new MI6 agent following Daniel Craig’s retirement from the role, following 2021’s “No Time to Die.”
Originally written by Bond creator Ian Fleming as a bedtime story for his son Casper, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” was adapted for the big screen in 1968. Dick Van Dyke starred in the kid-friendly musical fantasy film, directed by Ken Hughes,...

Matthew Warchus (Matilda: The Musical) is set to direct the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang reimagining in the works from Amazon MGM Studios and Eon Productions, Amazon said Thursday.
Warchus will work from a script by Enda Walsh (Small Things Like These). The film, which Deadline told you about first, is in early stages of development and builds on Eon and Amazon MGM’s partnership on the James Bond franchise.
Originally conceived by Bond author Ian Fleming as a bedtime story for his son Casper, his 1964 novel Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was previously adapted into a 1967 film directed by Ken Hughes off a script by Roald Dahl, Hughes and Richard Maibaum. The story is a whimsical family adventure following inventor Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke), his two children and Truly Scrumptious (Sally Anne Howes) — daughter of candy factory owner Lord Scrumptious (James Robertson Justice)— as they restore an old car, which...

January 2025 could mark a bleak month for very specific reasons, but in that month one can watch a nicely curated collection of David Bowie’s best performances. Nearly a decade since he passed, the iconic actor (who had some other trades) is celebrated with The Man Who Fell to Earth, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Linguini Incident, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Basquiat. (Note: watch The Missing Pieces under Fire Walk with Me‘s Criterion edition for about three times as much Phillip Jeffries.) It’s a retrospective-heavy month: Nicole Kidman, Cameron Crowe, Ethan Hawke, Paulin Soumanou Vieyra, Paolo Sorrentino, and Sean Baker are given spotlights; the first and last bring with them To Die For and Take Out‘s Criterion Editions, joining Still Walking, Hunger, and A Face in the Crowd.

Clive Barker's "Hellraiser" is a modest family drama about Faustian pacts, mysterious puzzle boxes that summon demons, and a wicked stepmother who smooches her skinless brother-in-law in a basement. It also paved the way for an ambitious franchise that's traveled everywhere from New York to outer space. Granted, some poorly received sequels have resulted in the "Hellraiser" movies ranking all over the pleasure and pain scale, but the series still has such sights to show us. The fifth film, "Hellraiser: Inferno," also marked Scott Derrickson's directorial debut, but the project was different before the future Marvel filmmaker took over.
The "Hellraiser" direct-to-video sequels don't have the best reputation among horror fans, as most of them are low-budget afterthoughts that were churned out so Miramax could retain the rights to the franchise. That said, "Inferno" is a compelling noir-inspired...

Did Micheal Fassbender almost mess up his role as Quentin Tarantino? ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
Hands down, Quentin Tarantino is an absolute legend, churning out movies that are as iconic as they are unmistakably his. From memorable characters to snappy dialogue, Tarantino’s films have a vibe, and A-listers like Samuel L. Jackson and Harvey Keitel are there to keep the magic alive.
But one standout collaboration got the fans talking: Michale Fassbender’s unforgettable role in Inglourious Bastards. Of course, Fassbender was already on the rise from his portrayal in Hunger and later blockbuster hits like X-Men: First Class and 12 Years an enslaved person. But his time with Tarantino? Absolutely one for the books, but did you know Fassbender almost blew his audition with the legend?
Michale Fassbender On Almost Blewing Quentin Tarantino’s Audition
It turns out that Michael Fassbender almost thought he had botched his shot at Inglourious Basterds.

Making movies is a hard business, but it’s much easier when you’re doing it with someone you value and respect. It seems the same can be said of picking movies, as collaborators Mike Leigh and Marianne Jean-Baptiste joined forces once again to take on the Criterion Closet. The two are currently promoting their most recent film together, “Hard Truths,” which is garnering Jean-Baptiste tremendous awards buzz, including recognition from the NYFCC, the Lafca, and the BIFAs this past weekend. She was previously nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Leigh’s 1996 Palme d’Or winner, “Secrets & Lies,” a film the pair look back on with fondness in the video below.
“Here’s a film you’re really going to like,” Leigh said, reaching for the film, to which Jean-Baptiste jokingly responded, “What’s that one about?”

Quentin Tarantino remains one of the most celebrated and respected directors working in Hollywood today. After he became a major name due to his breakout hit, Pulp Fiction, in 1994, he would go on to direct a handful of films that were either critically acclaimed or box office successes, or both. Tarantino movies often share a number of unique characteristics that make them instantly distinguishable, including memorable dialogue and select actors who have become regulars in his projects.
These regulars include Samuel L. Jackson, Eli Roth, Michael Madsen, and Harvey Keitel, but Fassbender is not among them. Fassbender worked steadily throughout the early 2000s, but it wasn't until later in the decade that his career really started to take off. After starring in Hunger (2008), the actor joined his first major franchise in 2011 with X-Men: First Class, in which he played a younger Magneto. Since then, he's appeared in projects like Prometheus...

Paramount+'s spy thriller The Agency is filled with high-profile actors, and its star-studded cast helped make the show's intricate plot work. The Agency is an English-language adaptation of the French show Le Bureau des Légendes, and it follows Martian (Michael Fassbender), a secret agent placed deep undercover who is suddenly told to report to his superiors in London. After the woman he romanced while undercover, Sami Zahir (Jodie Turner-Smith), finds him in London, Martian's split lives both begin to unravel. The Agency features an intricate story with fast-paced drama, and without its cast, none of that would have been possible.
Reviews for The Agency have been positive, and many critics have cited the show's cast as a major advantage. Many have singled out Michael Fassbender for his performance, and lauded his ability to navigate both of Martian's lives. Every actor and character contributed something unique to The Agency, however,...

The next addition to The Hunger Games franchise will take place more than two decades before Katniss Everdeen volunteers as tribute, but a great Sunrise on the Reaping theory would make a cameo possible. Sunrise on the Reaping will tell Haymitch Abernathy's story, following him into the deadly arena during the 50th Hunger Games tournament. This is one of the deadliest Games in Panem's history, and Suzanne Collins teased a focus on the "use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative" (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Needless to say, it sounds like the Sunrise on the Reaping book will be another biting political commentary, and its movie adaptation will follow suit. While both versions of the story will place a heavy focus on Haymitch, we'll probably see other familiar faces from previous Hunger Games movies. Katniss appearing seems like a stretch, as she won't be born yet...

The sci-fi subgenre where teens battle against a future dystopia was all the rage in the 2010s but seems to have gone out of style since then, or at least that seemed to be the takeaway from the Netflix movie Uglies, which came out the other month to applause from nobody. But The Hunger Games series, which kicked off the teen dystopia boom in the first place, is still going strong: the 2023 movie The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, a prequel about future dictator Coriolanus Snow Snow, did very well. When author Suzanne Collins revealed that she was writing another prequel, this time about Katniss Everdeen's mentor Haymitch Abernathy, Lionsgate announced it was making a movie version at the exact same time. Plucky teens will fight to the death and you'll like it!
Anyway, the prequel is called Sunrise on the Reaping, and it's set around 25 years before Katniss entered...

Two years ago, it was announced that Sam Claflin, who may be best known for playing Oswald Mosley on Peaky Blinders, Finnick Odair in the Hunger Games franchise, and Billy Dunne in Daisy Jones & the Six, had signed on to star in the supernatural thriller Bagman, from Hunger Games‘ home studio Lionsgate. The finished film received a theatrical release at the end of September, but it seems that few movie-goers noticed. Maybe Bagman will catch more attention now that horror fans will have the chance to watch it in their comfort of their own homes, as the film is set to receive a digital and VOD release this Friday, October 18th. It’s available for pre-order on Amazon, going for the price of $14.99.

Chef Ella works as a sous chef at Hain, a restaurant that’s not doing so well. When her boss, Chef Chico, the head chef, as well as the guy she’s interested in, falls into a coma, the survival of the restaurant falls on her shoulders. With the help of her fellow chefs, patrons, and a mystery man named Raymond in the mix, will Ella be able to save Hain from an inevitable disaster? Replacing Chef Chico is set in the fine dining restaurant Hain, which combines Filipino dishes with a special Hain experience that is like no other. Chico and Ella are actually poles apart, especially at work, but somehow, after work, everything is forgotten. This is the first time I’ve watched anything Filipino, and my initial reaction was surprise at the predominantly English dialogue of the show.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes!
The filming location for the arena scenes in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Centennial Hall in Wrocław, Poland, was used by Adolf Hitler during World War II, adding a tangible feeling of terror to the film. The choice of this infamous location underscores the thematic exploration of Coriolanus Snow's rise as a tyrannical leader in Panem, highlighting the darker early days of the Games. Snow's decision to align himself with Panem's elite, resulting in his ruthless actions, sets up his role as the antagonist in the core films. The dark nature of the arena scenes aligns with the movie's themes.

Aoy In Netflix’s ‘Hunger’ (2023), Explained: Why Does Aoy Return To Her Roots After Tasting Success?
Sitisiri Mongkolsiri’s Netflix movie “Hunger” is a play on the word, reflecting the literal and metaphorical sense of what Hunger can mean. For the poor, Hunger is the burning sensation of an empty stomach that craves succor so that sleep can arrive as an escape from the realities of poverty. For the wealthy, Hunger is the craving the elites have to exhibit their wealth to others and remind everyone of their social standing in the world. In Mongkolsiri’s movie, Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying plays the role of Aoy, a cook in her family’s restaurant who gets a ticket to escape poverty and achieve fame. Aoy does accept the offer, and for a while, she lives a life of success, but she chooses to return to her roots by the end of the movie. Let’s find out why.

In an array of “eat-the-rich” narratives, “Hunger” attempts to tell a similar tale mixed with the power of passion. From the trailer alone, “Hunger” gives off “The Menu” vibes, adding cultural context through a Thai lens, but unfortunately, it’s neither as entertaining nor as impactful due to its tedious pacing and on-the-nose presentation of the concept. Visually, it is charming, and Bangkok looks as dreamy as ever. The trouble is not the concept but the execution. The director of the hit series “Girl From Nowhere,” Sitisiri Mongkolsiri, brings out his thriller instincts in “Hunger,” drenching it in blood and darkness but failing to pack a punch, unlike the aforementioned series. Personally, I think there should’ve been more cultural involvement in “Hunger” than the blatant display of the class divide in Thailand.
“Hunger” follows Aoy (Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying), a culinary prodigy who has recently inherited her father’s pad see ew restaurant.

Josh Brolin blames director Jimmy Hayward and studio interference for the failure of 'Jonah Hex'.The 52-year-old actor starred in the lead role of the 2010 comic book movie, which was a critical and commercial flop, and he thinks he "still owes" his co-stars an apology because of what the film turned out to be, which he blames on the filmmaker going "out partying" instead of devoting all his time to the project. He told Variety: "It was not successful creatively or monetarily. I mean, everybody knows how I feel about 'Jonah Hex'."But the biggest thing with 'Jonah Hex' is rushing into hiring somebody. I remember Jeff Robinov, who I’m still close with, who was running Warner Brothers at the time and he was like, look, you’ve got to get a director in the next two weeks, otherwise we’ve got to can this thing.

Sir Steve McQueen is warning his unflinching film on the Grenfell Tower disaster will leave audiences “disturbed”.The Oscar-winning ’12 Years a Slave’ director shot his movie of the burned out husk of the high-rise flat block from a helicopter – just before its charred remains were shrouded in white plastic emblazoned with a giant green heart – as a stark reminder of the brutal destruction the building represents – and of the fact not one person or firm has been punished for their role in the 72 deaths in the inferno there on June 14, 2017.McQueen told The Guardian he wanted to use the 24-minute film, soundtracked only by natural noise, to ensure people didn’t get “want to let people off the hook” when it came to the reality of the tragedy. He said: “You must understand that the violence that was inflicted on that community was no joke.“I didn’t want to let people off the hook.

“To be a chef, you need a drive stronger than love,” is the advice that Aoy, a young woman working at her family’s nondescript noodle shop, is given in the opening moments of the trailer for Hunger, the new Thai drama due out on Netflix next month. Assured that she’s meant for greater things by a mysterious man, Aoy is plucked from her life of drudgery and thrown headfirst into the cutthroat world of haute cuisine.

"Do it until it's right!" Netflix has launched the official trailer for an intense thriller film called Hunger, made in Thailand about the food industry in Thailand. At first glance this reminds me of The Menu, but it also seems a bit more like FX's "The Bear" meets Eyes Wide Shut (yeah check it out). With a few sprinkles of The Platform thrown in. "Experience the kind of hunger you have never seen before... in Hunger." A woman running her family's noodle restaurant receives an invite to join the fine-dining industry under the tutelage of an infamous chef. Model Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying stars as Amy, a young woman who gets taken into a high society cooking company called "Hunger" and learns how insane people are up there. The film also stars Nopachai Jayanama and Gunn Svasti Na Ayudhya . This will be streaming on Netflix in April worldwide - I definitely need to watch this.

Elijah Bynum didn’t want to look the man in the eye. No one at the gym did. He was massive, a bodybuilder who inspired fear because of his size.
“No one wanted to be caught in his path, I think because he made us uncomfortable,” says Bynum of the feeling of his fellow gym patrons.
It was relatively early in the pandemic. Bynum had been thinking a lot about isolation, and wanted to craft a character forgotten by society. When he saw how people avoided this bodybuilder, something clicked: “You have an individual who is both feared and invisible — because of everyone around him. And I thought it was a really peculiar way for someone to move through the world.”
That was the genesis of Magazine Dreams, the new feature that debuted at Sundance last month and took home the creative vision jury prize. It is earning rave reviews for Jonathan Majors,...
