The MCU has been capturing the imagination of moviegoers and converting many of them to superhero nerds for almost two decades now, but it's also been responsible for drastically altering the career trajectories of many of its prominent stars. Among those most affected was Chris Hemsworth. The Aussie heartthrob may be a household name now, but before he first wielded Thor's mighty hammer, he wasn't well-known outside Australian soaps.
However, after a brief 2009 appearance as Kirk's father in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, Hemsworth went on to gain some recognition for his gritty portrayal of Kyle Garrity in Perfect Getaway. His true break would come two years later when he was given the role of the title character...

In 2009, J.J. Abrams rebooted the beloved Star Trek franchise for the big screen. The cast included several big stars, like Chris Pine, Simon Pegg and Zo Saldaa. Fresh faces littered the cast, some that would quickly rise in stardom far beyond the little screen time they enjoyed in this blockbuster hit. Looking back, some fans might be surprised to see Marvel's Thor playing the small role of Captain Kirk's father, George, especially considering that George Kirk sacrifices himself in the opening scene.
Chris Hemsworth jumped from television to film with his short appearance in the opening of Abrams' Star Trek. As he sacrifices himself to save his family, he and his wife try and decide what to name their baby, ultimately deciding to call him Jim. With so few lines, the role gave Hemsworth little room to show off his acting chops, but the part was clearly the first...

Considering the relatively short window of time hes been in the public spotlight, Chris Hemsworths rise as a movie star has been incredibly impressive to watch. Early projects like his brief cameo in 2009s Star Trek and the neo-noir thriller A Perfect Getaway indicated that he was one to watch, but Hemsworth attracted a legion of loyal fans thanks to his performance as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His success also kickstarted another franchise on Netflix with his performance as Tyler Rake in the Extraction action films.

Chris Hemsworth struggled with Thor: Love and Thunder, feeling he became a parody of himself. Some fans felt Love and Thunder leaned too heavily into silliness, leading to tonal inconsistencies and wasted characters. Despite occasional frustrations with his role, Hemsworth's portrayal of Thor has been praised by co-star Robert Downey Jr.

MCU launched actors like Hemsworth into stardom after smaller, darker roles. Hemsworth's intense performance in A Perfect Getaway showcased his early range. Despite early success in MCU, Hemsworth's prior roles displayed his versatility in acting craft.
When plainly put, the Marvel Cinematic Universe helped to make massive stars out of celebrities who were previously just drifting in and out of movies. For example — after starring in many, many films since 1970 that either barely passed at the box office (regarding ticket sales) or flat-out failed, Robert Downey Jr. flew to the sky with his role as Tony Stark in 2008's Iron Man.
Right before donning the role of the red, white, and blue hero in 2011's Captain America, Chris Evans was plagued with a line of mediocrely successful films (including a dead-on-arrival romantic comedy that almost ruined his career). How can Amazon Prime Video followup the first season finale of its biggest series ever in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? The answer lies in its list of new releases for November 2022.
Understandably, Prime Video is probably pretty tired and won’t be opting for any more Middle-earth spectacle for awhile. In its place, however, are a couple of still intriguing Amazon Original series. British Western drama series The English is set to arrive on Nov. 11 to both Prime Video and BBC Two. Emily Blunt stars as a woman who heads to the American West in 1890 looking for revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Cool! Speaking of the English, the James Corden-starring Mammals also premieres on Nov. 11.

Let the Steve Zahnaissance commence. Whether it’s Saving Silverman, A Perfect Getaway, That Thing You Do!, You’ve Got Mail, Rescue Dawn, or even War for the Planet of the Apes, Steve Zahn’s appearance on the big screen is always a welcome one. His next role, in Anna Kerrigan’s modern-day western Cowboys, is one of his most acclaimed.
Premiering at Tribeca Film Festival last year, where Zahn picked up Best Actor and Kerrigan won Best Screenplay, the film follows the actor as a troubled but well-intentioned father who has recently separated from his wife Sally (Jillian Bell). When his wife refuses to let their trans son Joe (Sasha Knight) live as his authentic self, Troy runs off with Joe into the Montana wilderness. Ahead of a release next month on February 12, the first trailer and poster have arrived.

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen reboot is picking up speed, filling out its cast, and moving closer to production, for an expected 2018 release. We already know that David Harbour (Stranger Things) will star as Hellboy, Ian McShane (Deadwood, American Gods) will play his adoptive father, Professor Trevor "Broom" Bruttenholm, and Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones, The Descent) will direct. Deadline is reporting that Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Resident Evil) is in final talks to play the (supposed) villain, the Blood Queen herself.
Based on recent fan and media reactions, the R-rated reboot has been making all the right moves and generating a lot of excitement. So, this latest news is either spectacular or horrible, depending upon your love/hate for Jovovich's work. It's a fair concern, because she was great in The Fifth Element and A Perfect Getaway (a really taut action-thriller), but she was awful in Ultraviolet and The Fourth Kind.

Horror legend George A. Romero is teaming up with a frequent collaborator for his next zombie movie, which will be seeking buyers at the Fantasia International Film Festival market this summer. The new project is entitled Road of the Dead, which George A. Romero co-wrote with Matt Birman, who is slated to direct this project. It isn't clear when production may begin, but this project will be just the director's second feature film, although he has spent decades in other areas of production.
IndieWire reports that this project originated from a Matt Birman pitch from roughly 10 years ago. The story is set on a remote island where zombie prisoners race cars in a modern-day Coliseum, all for the entertainment of affluent humans. The director describes the project as a hybrid of Road Warrior and Rollerball, set at a Nascar race, and that there is "significant inspiration" from the iconic 1959 classic Ben-Hur.

It's clear this is an homage to Tarantino and to Reservoir Dogs specifically, but it also seems to be inspired by Christopher Nolan's films, too. Doesn't look that good. Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in October 2018.
You may or may have not noticed it but HBO's horror options have gotten pretty grim. Not grim as in scary but grim as in incredibly sparse.
Thankfully the cavalry is arriving in HBO New Releases for October 2018. We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in October 2018.
You may or may have not noticed it but HBO's horror options have gotten pretty grim. Not grim as in scary but grim as in incredibly sparse.

David Twohy goes from the world of Riddick to the world of time travel for his new thriller...
David Twohy's career first took off thanks to his writing, with his name on the screenplay credits for the likes of The Fugitive, Waterworld, Critters 2, Warlock and, er, G.I. Jane. His directorial breakthrough, however, came at his third attempt, Having steered films such as Disaster In Time and The Arrival (which itself isn't too bad), it was Pitch Black where everything clicked. It remains the best film he's directed to date (although we have a soft spot for A Perfect Getaway, which we talked about when chatting about whether star names ruin modern thrillers, here).
Twohy, following last year's latest Riddick film with Vin Diesel, is now circling a new time travel movie, which goes by the name of Replay. It's being funded by Relativity, and is based on the...

"Riddick" and "A Perfect Getaway" helmer David Twohy has signed on to direct "Replay" for Relativity Media.
Joe Gazzam penned the script which follows Tyler Vaughn, a test subject in a quantum experiment who is sent four days into the future. There he learns that his son has been killed and he is the prime suspect in the murder.
As each day ends, he's pulled back to the previous day, so he tries to solve his son's murder before he gets back to the present.
Ahmet Zappa, Alan Gasmer, Peter Jaysen and Ryan Kavanaugh are producing with filming aiming to begin in early 2015.

Riddick director David Twohy is staying in the sci-fi genre, signing on to direct Relativity Media's Replay.
We first reported on the project back in July, when Relativity picked up the then-untitled script by Joe Gazzam. That report revealed the plot will center on a father and son, although now we have new details. The story will follow Tyler Vaughn, a test subject in a quantum experiment who is sent four days into the future. There he learns that his son has been killed and he is the prime suspect in the murder. When that day ends, he's pulled back to the previous day, as he tries to solve his son's murder before he gets back to present day.
Ahmet Zappa, Alan Gasmer, Peter Jaysen and Ryan Kavanaugh are producing, with Tucker Tooley and Devon Schiff serving as executive producers. The filmmakers are eyeing an early 2015 production start for Replay.

As the gates to "Halloween Horror Nights" open, so too does the annual Purge begin at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort with the debut of a terrifying new scarezone, The Purge: Anarchy, inspired by Universal Pictures' new thriller, which scored the highest opening for a horror film this year.
The Purge: Anarchy scarezone will greet guests with pure unadulterated fear, bringing to life the turmoil and pandemonium that awaits those vulnerable to masked vigilantes in search of new victims. Reimagining the movie's premise that on one night every year, any and all crime is made legal, the scarezone will be inhabited by average citizens transformed into sadistic felons during this period of government-sanctioned lawlessness. Like civilians in the movie fighting to survive, guests will be at the mercy of cunning wit, luck and speed as they attempt to outsmart and outlive the anarchy brought about by those...

Doubles down on the first film’s angry approach to class, inequality, and violence, and once again reflects an image of America that is ugly but only slightly distorted. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the first film
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Last year, The Purge astonished me with one of the most daring speculative conceits to come out of a Hollywood studio in maybe forever, or certainly since the dystopic sci-fi of the 1970s. In a near-future America under what appears to be a religious dictatorship called the New Founding Fathers, all crime including murder is permitted — nay, encouraged — one night a year for a 12-hour period called the Purge. Vague religious justifications about “cleansing” smash up against the American “right” to be armed to the teeth and defend oneself against all threats, perceived or actual, with hints...

I’m back! It’s been a long time and I apologise for that, moving house turned out to be a far far longer process than I anticipated or had been led to believe. Three weeks turned into six, six weeks turned into three months and now here we are.
Aside from the length of time it takes, moving house was a real eye opener in other areas too. Specifically in terms of how I inform you week on week of all of this wonderful content available to stream and then how you have to put up with lacklustre delivery from various ISPs. I was living in someone else’s house on a connection that was not my own, not wanting to name names but there is one of the big three ISP’s in the UK which boasts about having one of, if not the, fastest broadband delivery on...

The year 2009 will partly be remembered as the year Avatar dominating the box office, with audiences flocking to see James Cameron's leafy pulp epic in shimmering 3D. Making almost $2.8bn worldwide, Avatar was a true behemoth, besting Cameron's own Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation) and hastening a rush of 3D films in the years that followed.
Films such as 2012, Sherlock Holmes and boozy comedy The Hangover were also among the top 10, but as always, some of the most memorable and individual films of the year were far from the most financially successful. So to round off our series of underrated flicks of the 2000s, here's our selection of 2009's overlooked films...

Courtney Solomon’s “Getaway” is not to be confused with Sam Peckinpah’s 1972 movie “The Getaway”, or the 1994 Roger Donaldson remake starring Alec Baldwin, or the more recent 2009 thriller “A Perfect Getaway” by David Twohy. 2013′s “Getaway” is more “Fast and Furious” than caper film, and depending on your need for speed — you have one, right? — the film might just be up your alley. Just in case you fall into that category, “Getaway” speeds onto DVD/Blu-ray this November 26th. Former race car driver Brent Magna (Hawke) is pitted against the clock. Desperately trying to save the life of his kidnapped wife, Brent commandeers a custom Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake, taking it and its unwitting owner (Gomez) on a high-speed race against time, at the command of the mysterious villain holding his wife hostage. The best part about Courtney Solomona’s vehicular thriller is, without a doubt, watching Ethan Hawke...

Earlier last week (sorry for the late posting!) I got the chance to check out Universal’s Riddick, the latest entry into the Chronicles of Riddick franchise that everyone assumed was dead after a poor second film. Does this latest film manage to recapture the magic that made everyone fall in love with the titular character to begin with? Or does it fall short? Come inside to check out my thoughts on the film.

Riddick, the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000's hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Riddick is clearly a passion project for writer/director David Twohy. The third entry in the series took its sweet time arriving to theaters, following 2004′s underwhelming The Chronicles of Riddick, but while that sequel has its fan, it didn’t stay in touch with what arguably made the first movie (Pitch Black) so appealing. Riddick isn’t a blockbuster character but an antihero monster slayer. We see the character return to those simple animalistic traits in the new film where he faces off against a batch of mercenaries and monsters on an unknown planet. But it wasn’t easy getting there. Twohy more than likely could have made a bigger sequel with a PG-13 slapped on, but he set his sights on a dirty R-rated Riddick film. And we’re all the better for it. Here’s our chat with Riddick director David Twohy: Both A Perfect Getaway and Riddick seem like a “back to...

Universal has released new featurette for the sci-fi/action film, Riddick. It opens with a slight contradiction between Vin Diesel and director David Twohy. Diesel says "We always wanted it to be three films," but then Twohy follows with "It was a question of where do we go next?" The implication of a trilogy signals that they knew how it would be resolved, but clearly that wasn't the case. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Just because a film is planned that doesn't mean the final result will be good and vice versa. This featurette contains new footage, and does a good job of laying out the story without giving too much away, although there is no alien-puppy-saving. Hit the jump to check out the featurette. The film also stars Katee Sackhoff, David Bautista, Jordi Mollà, Matt Nable, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo, Nolan Gerard Funk, and Karl Urban. Riddick opens September 6th.
