Matthew McConaughey Joins Medieval Action Movie From Jason Bourne Director
Image
Matthew McConaughey has booked another role. The actor is set to star in The Rage, an upcoming medieval action movie set during the Peasants' Revolt.

According to Deadline, McConaughey will play a farmer who becomes the leader of the revolt. Although unconfirmed, Deadline notes that the character description could imply that he's playing the real-life figure Wat Tyler, who led the uprising before being killed by forces loyal to King Richard. Interestingly enough, when The Rage was first announced back in May 2022 under its original title The Hood, it was Benedict Cumberbatch who was attached as the farmer-turned-leader. However, Cumberbatch is seemingly no longer involved with the project, possibly due to his forthcoming commitments to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Matthew McConaughey's Upcoming Comedy Series With Woody Harrelson Casts His Fictionalized Mother
Image
Matthew McConaughey has cast his fictionalized mother for his upcoming Apple TV+ comedy series with Woody Harrelson. Holland Taylor, best known for playing matriarch Evelyn Harper in Two and a Half Men, has boarded the series as Ma Mac.

Per Deadline, Taylor will appear as a series regular opposite McConaughey and Harrelson in the 10-episode half-hour comedy series. Although McConaughey previously revealed the show's title as Brother from Another Mother in April 2023, Deadline is claiming in its casting report that the series remains untitled at this time. What is known, however, is that the show will star Harrelson and McConaughey as heightened versions of themselves in a heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around their strange and beautiful sibling-like bond. Matthew and Woody’s close friendship is tested when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas.

Why We All Really Do Care About Standing Ovations
Image
Recalling the first time one of his films screened at the Cannes Film Festival, a young filmmaker remembered how the duration of the standing ovation the audience gave seemed to grow with every retelling in the media. In the room, he clocked about “a six-and-a-half-minute standing ovation, [but] by the time I had got back to L.A., it had grown to 20 minutes,” he said. “I said: ‘Wait a minute, I’m happy with six. I never even had a two-minute ovation.’ ”

That director was Steven Spielberg. The film was E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, which closed the 35th Cannes festival in 1982. Even back then, they were timing standing ovations — and arguing about just how long a festival audience stayed on its feet clapping. There’s a long a tradition of using that figure, preferably inflated, as a marketing hook in your movie’s rollout.

“The film that received a 15-minute...

Image
Galactus and the Silver Surfer have been cast for Marvel Studios' upcoming The Fantastic Four reboot. Director Lorcan Finnegan Talks ‘The Surfer’: ‘You Can’t Surf if You Don’t Suffer’
Image
Irish director Lorcan Finnegan – already behind “Vivarium” – returns to Cannes with “The Surfer.” Starring Nicolas Cage, it follows a man who just wants to surf on a beach next to his old childhood home in Australia. But he is not a local anymore and he will have to fight for it – or lose his mind.

Nic’s character actually references “surfing as a metaphor for life.” Why did you want to explore – and maybe also mock – this philosophy?

I met Thomas Martin, who wrote the film, years ago. We wanted to do something together and then he mentioned “The Surfer.” It was about this one man, trying to deal with who he thinks he is and what he actually wants over the course of five days. It felt very contained, challenging and appealing to me as a filmmaker.

At the beginning of the film, The Surfer says: “You either surf,...

‘Fantastic Four’ Reportedly To Add One More Silver Surfer Alongside Shalla-Bal
Image
Sometime ago it was revealed that MCU’s Silver Surfer will be Julia Garner. Julia will be portraying Shalla-Bal, Norrin’s love interest in the comics, but there is a reality in which Shalla serves as the Herald of Galactus as well, Sunglow.

The reactions to Julia Garner’s casting were extremely polarizing with a good part of the community feeling that genderswapping Silver Surfer, whom 99% of people associate with being male, is extremely disrespectful to the character’s legacy. The second part of the fandom however feels that other versions of Silver Surfer – notably female ones, should get their moment of glory.

Now according to most recent rumors posted on private Pateron by Daniel Richtman, Norrin Radd will join Shalla-Bal in ‘Fantastic Four’ setting things right with the fanbase. This points in the direction that their story will be more comic-accurate than expected.

Norrin Rad is set to appear...

‘Fantastic Four’ cast: Julia Garner to play Silver Surfer

Julia Garner, the three-time Emmy-winning co-star of “Ozark,” looks to be joining Marvel’s next big bet, the relaunch of the First Family of Comics, “Fantastic Four.” As per Deadline, she’ll be appearing as the grooviest of villains, the Silver Surfer. So there.

Whether or not director Matt Shakman, whose television credits include zany shows like “You’re The Worst” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” as well as “WandaVision,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” will have the sand to include a moment in which Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm serenades Shalla-Bal with a rendition of the Beach Boys’s “Surfer Girl” remains to be seen.

Julia Garner Playing The Silver Surfer For Marvel’s New Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four’s Rumored Villains Are Brought To Life In Cosmic MCU Art
Image
Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four may introduce Galactus and the Silver Surfer, introducing two of Marvel Comics' most powerful villains into the MCU. The potential debut of Galactus and the Silver Surfer suggests that Fantastic Four will be a cosmic, space-faring adventure. Javier Bardem is rumored to be Marvel Studios' top pick to play Galactus, though his debut in Fantastic Four is still unconfirmed.

Two of the most powerful rumored villains for Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four have now been brought to life in stellar new MCU fan art. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige first teased the development of a Fantastic Four reboot for the MCU in 2019, shortly after Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox. WandaVision's Matt Shakman was hired as Fantastic Four's director following Jon Watts' exit from the project, and though announcements have yet to be made concerning the casting of Fantastic Four's titular heroes, several iconic...

Cyclops vs. Thanos Proved Scott is Marvel’s Best Tactician (Not Captain America)
Image
Cyclops' strategic genius outshines Captain America's in Infinity Gauntlet #4, showcasing his ability to outmaneuver even cosmic villains like Thanos. Scott Summers has an unparalleled tactical mind; while Captain America may have fought in wars before, Scott has been a soldier nearly his entire life. Scott Summers' commitment to keeping his people alive drives his exceptional strategic thinking, making him Marvel's ultimate tactician.

Marvel's Cyclops has many critical skills that make him an incredibly effective team leader, but as one iconic crossover showed, his tactical genius surpasses that of even Captain America. During a battle with Thanos, it was Scott Summers' strategic thinking, rather than brute force, that proved nearly enough to take down the cosmic villain.

The Infinity Gauntlet #4 – written by Jim Starlin, with art from George Perez & Ron Lim, color by Ian Laughlin & Christie Scheele, and lettering by Jack Morelli - features the climactic battle between Marvel's heroes and Thanos,...

Fantastic Four: Nova Finaly Might Make His MCU Debut, Teaser Image Detail Reveals
Image
The Fantastic Four teaser image had a lot going for it, but the surprise that fans have been focusing on the most is the inclusion of H.E.R.B.I.E, the robot assistance that first made an appearance in the 1978 animated series. He was a replacement for The Human Torch, who was not licensed for the television series,.

However, H.E.R.B.I.E’s appearance in the poster implies there is at least going to be some alien involvement in the Fantastic Four film and it will most probably include Galactus. If this version of the Fantastic Four sticks true to the comics, H.E.R.B.I.E will have some Xandarian make in his circuits, which means it is another opportunity to introduce Nova.

One of Stan Lee's Top 4 Marvel Heroes Still Hasn't Appeared in the MCU
Image
Stan Lee's top Marvel heroes are Spider-Man, Hulk, and Doctor Strange, but the Silver Surfer hasn't received a proper MCU debut. The introduction of the Silver Surfer in the MCU would honor Stan Lee's love for the character and allow his top heroes to interact. The Silver Surfer could be introduced into the MCU through the Fantastic Four films or by bringing in characters from 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four universe.

The late and great Stan Lee is an icon in the comic book industry and beyond, with the stories and characters he originated alongside his fellow creators standing tall as some of the most influential contributions to nerd culture of all time. Flash forward to the MCU, and most of Stan’s greatest creations have been given the live-action treatment, with one cosmic hero in particular still not getting his due in the series’ sprawling live-action universe.

Silver Surfer's Ultimate Form Finally Made Him More Powerful Than Galactus
Image
Timeslip was a '90s initiative to reimagine Marvel characters, including Silver Surfer and Galactus. In this reality, Silver Surfer assembles a weapon to kill Galactus, but then discovers he must replace his former master. The guilt destroys Silver Surfer, turning him into an inhuman force of destruction who splits planets in two with his new, blade-like board.

The Silver Surfer is one of Marvel's most tragic heroes - a heroic adventurer who sold his soul to protect his world, becoming the herald of the planet-devouring force of nature known as Galactus. However, it turns out that things could have gone far, far worse for Norrin Radd.

In the late '90s, Marvel asked a question - what would its most iconic heroes look like if the most popular artists of the day had co-created them with Stan Lee? The answer was Timeslip - an initiative where acclaimed artists reimagined major characters from first principles.

10 Thanos Quotes That Prove He'll Always Be Marvel's Greatest Villain
Image
Thanos's philosophical rhetoric is as poetic as it is devastating, with the character's impressive way with words often leaving a lasting impression on readers. Thanos's words have the power to leave everyone, including Marvel's greatest cosmic entities, in awe of his oratory skills. Thanos's iconic quotes showcase his cold core and his ability to instill fear and awe in his enemies, solidifying his status as Marvel's greatest villain.

The Mad Titan, Thanos, is just as much a threatening orator as he is a force to be reckoned with. Thanos first debuted in 1973, but it wasn't until 1991's The Infinity Gauntlet storyline that the warrior was portrayed the imposing menace he remains today. While his strength, skill, and overall physical prowess are a big reason for this, it is the philosophy he upholds and the dialogue he uses to expound that philosophy that has helped him leave an impression on readers.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer Revisited
Surfer, Dude (2008)
The Silver Surfer hasn’t been treated well on the big screen. When 20th Century Fox announced the character would be appearing in their 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, well, we’d be lying if we said fans were enthusiastic, given the lackluster reaction to the first film. But, people were happy that Doug Jones would be playing the role in motion capture, even if Lawrence Fishburne doing the voice seemed like an odd mismatch. When it came out in the summer of 2007, reviews were slightly more optimistic than they were for this first film, but it was a box-office disappointment. Yet, we think it’s not quite as bad as people remember as we dig into this episode of Marvel Revisited.

Ioan Gruffudd (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Jessica Alba (Susan Storm/Invisible Woman), Chris Evans (Johnny Storm/Human Torch), and Michael Chiklis (Ben Grimm/The Thing...

Once Upon a Time Lord Is a Doctor Who Story That Could Only Be a Comic
Image
This article appears in the new issue of Den Of Geek magazine. Get your copy here.

Pretty much the first thing Dan Slott says in our interview is, “I got to write Doctor Who fanfic and got paid for it!”

It’s a feeling that permeates not only our interview but the book Slott is here to talk about, a whopping 66-page special for Titan Comics called Once Upon A Time Lord. Slott seems like a kid who has been locked in the candy store by mistake and intends to scarf down as much candy as he can before someone notices.

But there has been no mistake—Dan Slott is one of the most respected and prolific comic writers working right now, with runs on the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer, and, most famously, Spider-Man behind him. Indeed, Slott’s runs include the epic “Spider-Verse” comic event that inspired the wildly successful ongoing movie trilogy.

True Detective's Director Wanted Matthew McConaughey For Woody Harrelson's Part
Image
When thinking of the landmark first season of HBO's crime anthology series "True Detective," it's hard not to think of one major image: Rustin "Rust" Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) in the front seat of a car, speaking of life and death in the language of jaded detectives. Marty's the funny one, but Rust is his wildly depressed and deeply nihilistic counterpart. Their inimitable chemistry is of the "opposites attract" variety, like the HBO drama version of "Lethal Weapon."

The two actors had been paired up before, but never to this effect, and never with this much shared psychological weight. It went way beyond what you could find in films like the execrable "Surfer, Dude" or the "Truman Show" also-ran "EDtv." The benefits of a longer story gave each actor the chance to really dig beneath the superficial appearance of their characters, whether it was McConaughey's demonstration...

Woody Harrelson Thinks Matthew McConaughey Got to Do All the ‘Fun,’ ‘Crazy Sh*t’ on ‘True Detective’
Image
Woody Harrelson thought his work was clogged up with more serious roles leading into “White House Plumbers.”

The “Champions” actor compared the HBO true crime limited series to the cabler’s mystery-thriller anthology show “True Detective,” in which he and Matthew McConaughey starred as a pair of grizzled homicide detectives. Despite only appearing in the first season, both actors serve as executive producers on the series, which returns with a fourth season later this year.

“White House Plumbers” writer Peter Huyck now recalls Harrelson being hesitant to sign on to the series coming off “True Detective.”

“When we all went up to your house to try and convince you to do the part, you said, ‘Look, I did “True Detective” and McConaughey got the cool part, the fun part. He got to do more crazy shit,'” Huyck reminded Harrelson as part of a Vulture interview on “Plumbers.” Harrelson stars...

Matthew McConaughey & Woody Harrelson Could Be Biological Brothers
Image
Matthew McConaughey reveals that he and Woody Harrelson could be biological brothers. Both born in Texas, the two actors first appeared together in the comedy films Welcome to Hollywood, EDtv, and Surfer, Dude before reuniting years later for True Detective season 1 and now, an upcoming Apple TV+ series. In addition to sharing the screen, McConaughey and Harrelson have also maintained a close, brother-like friendship over the years, so much so that their kids call the other "Uncle."

During a recent appearance on the Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa podcast, McConaughey made the surprise announcement that he and Harrelson could actually be biological brothers. The possibility stems from a shocking family revelation that McConaughey’s mother knew Harrelson’s father, perhaps intimately, which led the former to investigate his family history. McConaughey is hesitant to take a DNA test because if true, his father would not be who he...

Silver Surfer Killing Galactus Secretly Retcons Everything His Fans Know
Image
Most Marvel fans are familiar with the world-ending relationship between Galactus and the Silver Surfer, but everything that’s been outwardly shown in the comics has, for the most part, been a lie. And the truth is one of Marvel's biggest secrets, with the death of Galactus confirming the shocking truth of the Silver Surfer’s real purpose.

Galactus (originally Galan) was plagued with the grim task of maintaining balance in the cosmos by consuming planets to satiate a never-ending hunger. While this is Galactus’ cosmic task, he doesn’t do it alone. Throughout his time as the Devourer of Worlds, Galactus has recruited a number of heralds to scout planets fit for consumption, with the most iconic being the Silver Surfer. Norrin Radd became a herald of Galactus after offering himself up as tribute for the sake of his planet and its people, agreeing to aid in the condemnation...

Apple’s bringing it all the way back to 2014. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the actors who led the first season of “True Detective,” are reuniting for a very different project — an Apple TV+ comedy series where the two Texan stars play fictionalized versions of themselves.

According to Apple’s logline, the untitled show focuses on McConaughey and Harrelson as they bring their combined families together to live under the same Texas ranch, testing the actors’ friendship in the process.

David West Read, whose other Apple TV+ series “The Big Door Prize” recently made its world premiere as part of the SXSW TV selection ahead of its March 29 streaming debut, created the untitled show; aside from “The Big Door Prize,” Read’s also known for writing the book to Broadway musical “& Juliet” and for his work on “Schitt’s Creek,” for which he won an Emmy.
