There are a handful of classic horror musicals that people flock to every year; The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Nightmare Before Christmas are the big three. All fantastic movies, but audiences may get burnt out on them eventually. Those in the know, the Venn diagram of theater kids and horror nerds, have their alternative recommendations, like Repo! The Genetic Opera and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. We all know these films are great, but there are other great options out there. As a fellow theater kid/horror nerd, this writer has a recommendation that even predates the classic cinematic take on Richard O'Brien's beloved musical.

It was only a decade ago that the first feature film to entirely shoot in Saudi Arabia was released — and it was directed by a woman. 2012's Wadjda remains an excellent film, and initiated the slow-drip of a New Saudi Cinema that has included the phenomenal pictures The Tambour of Retribution and The Perfect Candidate. Netflix just released a Saudi film, Alkhallat+. Politics aside, the kingdom is obviously transforming itself through a cultural renaissance of sorts, a modernizing effort that is attracting businesses and artists alike. Darren Lynn Bousman is now one of them.
Bousman is the director behind four films in the Saw franchise, the bombastic horror musical masterpiece Repo! The Genetic Opera, underrated recent films like Abattoir, and genuinely innovative immersive theater experiences like One Day Die. This Midwestern horror maestro is not the first person you'd expect to embed himself in Saudi Arabia and make an Arabic film,...

The horror genre is able to be paired up with a wide variety of other film genres to create a movie that is more welcoming to a wider audience. Comedy and science fiction have proven to be quite compatible with horror, but another genre that has found success using horror elements is musicals. Broadway adaptations like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Little Shop of Horrors along with other original horror movie musicals like Phantom of the Paradise have made their sinister stories told through songs accessible, and there are a few underrated movies that both horror and musical fans should add to their lists.
Although not as critically acclaimed as the likes of The Phantom of the Opera or The Rocky Horror Picture Show, these overlooked and underrated films have plenty of catchy tunes that warrant a watch -- and a potential sing-along. Some of these...

You've seen A24 films about somewhat literal man-eating aliens ("Under the Skin"), people being turned into walruses ("Tusk"), farting corpses ("Swiss Army Man"), talking shells ("Marcel the Shell with Shoes On"), and the multiverse ("Everything Everywhere All at Once"). Now, the studio is trying its hand at a musical for the first time with "Dicks: The Musical," a film that, contrary to my expectations the first time I saw that title, is not about singing penises. I mean, A24 only just made a film featuring a giant penis monster, so it wasn't out of the question.
Backing up -- "Dicks: The Musical" comes from relative newcomers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, who both wrote the film -- which is based on their original two-person stage musical "F***ing Identical Twins" -- and star as a pair of obnoxious business bros who find out they're literal twins and conspire to get their divorced parents back together.

The Who's "Tommy" is one of the most groundbreaking concept albums in rock and roll history, and is considered by many to be one of the best albums ever written. After its debut in 1969, "Tommy" has been adapted in a variety of different mediums, including a ballet, an opera, a restructured work for the London Symphony Orchestra, a Broadway musical, and most notably, the cinematic rock and roll masterpiece by Ken Russell. Four years before directing "Tommy," Russell put out the controversial religious horror erotica, "The Devils," which /Film's Chris Evangelista rightfully described as "a punk rock freakshow disguised as a period piece." Considering the story of "Tommy," Russell was the perfect director for the job.
The story follows a young man named Tommy (Roger Daltrey) who after witnessing his mother's lover murder his father, disassociates from reality. He's surrounded by sadistic neighbors and relatives and is in desperate need of escapism,...

Darren Lynn Bousman was ready for a change. Between 2005 and 2007, he directed three sequels to the “Saw” franchise, all of which topped the box office on their opening weekends, before he turned 30. He spent the next decade parlaying that success into passion projects, like his gonzo musical “Repo! The Genetic Opera” and a Japanese horror series that he produced, but traditional filmmaking started to feel a little played out.
“I became desensitized to making movies,” he said over Zoom this month from his home in Los Angeles. “Everyone is so distracted. We live with a computer in our hands. I have a 100-inch TV but when I’m watching movies on it, I’m on my phone checking Instagram and Twitter, going to make coffee. You’re never truly present.”

"I thought the Jigsaw killer was dead?" "He is..." Lionsgate has debuted a second official trailer for horror sequel Spiral. The full title is Spiral: From the Book of Saw, though they seem to be switching between just Spiral and the full title. This was delayed from release last May, and has now been reset for release this May, opening exclusively in theaters because that's how they want everyone to experience this. Directed by Darren Bousman, the idea for this return to the Saw universe comes directly from Chris Rock - credited for the story. Rock also stars in it, along with Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson. Instead of gore horror, this next Saw movie has more of a Se7en vibe, about a detective investigating grisly murders who ends up trapped in "the center of the killer's morbid game." This a whole different trailer than the...

Alex Essoe has been working as an actress for years but finds herself in the middle of a magic moment. Last year, she starred in Doctor Sleep, Mike Flanagan's sequel to The Shining, as Wendy Torrance. This year, she's appearing in The Haunting of Bly Manor and she recently began filming Midnight Mass for Netflix. On top of that, she has a new movie coming out called Death of Me, which hails from director Darren Lynn Bousman.
Death of Me centers on a vacationing couple, Christine and Neil. They are on an island off the coast of Thailand and wake up hungover with no memory of the night before. They soon discover footage on Neil's camera and look on horrified as he appears to murder Christine. They are left with 24 hours until the next ferry departs, with a typhoon threatening the island and must attempt to reconstruct the night's events.

They are left with 24 hours until the next ferry departs, with a typhoon threatening the island and must attempt to reconstruct the night's events.

Saban Films has released the trailer for Death of Me. This new horror/thriller is led by Maggie Q and Luke Hemsworth and comes from director Darren Lynn Bousman, director of four installments in the Saw franchise. In this case, Bousman is getting inventive and playing with the genre a bit, as we can see from the trailer.
The trailer opens with a couple who clearly had a wild night and are attempting to put together what happened. They then discover a video that was taken, which sheds some light on the previous night's events. Though it carries with it some dark and twisted implications. To say the very least of it, the violence depicted in this video, which raises a lot of questions, puts a strain on their relationship. More details begin to surface and things get progressively trippy. It looks to be an inventive, dark and twist-filled genre tale.

Mike Myers was shamed as the "worst actor in Hollywood" at the 2009 Golden Raspberries, a spoof movie awards ceremony.
The comedian's film The Love Guru dominated the 29th annual event, taking home Razzies for worst picture, screenplay and actor on Saturday - a day before the Academy Awards celebrates Tinseltown's finest.
Paris Hilton scored a triple dishonour, winning awards for worst actress for her part in The Hottie and the Nottie and worst supporting actress for her cameo in Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Hilton was also included in the worst screen couple alongside her Hottie co-stars, Christine Lakin and Joel David Moore.
Neither the heiress nor funnyman Myers were present to collect their gold spray-painted Raspberry statuettes.
Pierce Brosnan was named worst supporting actor for his singing turn in Mamma Mia!, while the worst-director Razzie went to Uwe Boll for his three films In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, 1968 Tunnel Rats, and Postal.

Hilton To Return To Repo?
Socialite Paris Hilton could be set to reprise her role in Repo! The Genetic Opera, according to her co-star Alexa Vega. Vega, who starred alongside Hilton in the 2008 rock musical, admits that although the film's producers were disappointed that the picture was only given a limited release in the U.S., they still hope to bring back the cast for a sequel.
She tells Moviehole.net, "From the very, very beginning, we always talked about a prequel or a sequel to this movie. And it’s hard, because as of right now, we all want to do it, but, you know, it didn’t really do as we hoped.
"And we didn’t really have a lot of support. But we’re hoping that the fans will come back, and it will be an underground cult classic that will grow, and that will eventually spark us to do either the prequel or the sequel to this film."...

Bousman Upset His Mother With Hilton Casting
Horror moviemaker Darren Lynn Bousman's mother was so distraught when the director first cast Paris Hilton in his new movie Repo! The Genetic Opera she threatened to disown him.
Like many friends, fans and critics alike, Bousman's mum was more than surprised when he announced Hilton as his star.
And he admits he fought the idea of having the socialite in his film for the longest time: "I was adamantly opposed to casting Paris because the first thing people said to me was, 'Think of the press you'll get if you put Paris in it.' I thought, 'Whatever horror cred I have is about to go down the toilet.'
"My mother calls me crying from Kansas City - 'Why did you cast her, that charlatan?' She was very upset.
"My mother logged onto this website and read, 'Paris Hilton caught smoking dope in back alley.' That's not Paris Hilton. The paparazzi took pictures during a break while we were recording the soundtrack and she was drinking a water; the smoke was coming from the musicians smoking cigarettes.
"People spin these stories about her and that's how they know Paris Hilton. My idea of Paris, before I met her, was this really spoiled rich kid who is better than everyone else. As it turns out she was not the person I expected her to be. She was so charming.
"She stayed at the exact same hotel and ate at the same restaurants, and went to the same s**tty bar as all of us. I'm a dive bar kind of guy and she didn't come with an entourage or a single dog. She had just gotten out of her legal trouble so it was important for her to show that she wasn't this person. She really won me over."...

We decided to take a gander over at the official website for Lionsgate's Repo! The Genetic Opera this evening and discovered that the entire site has been given a major upgrade. If you click the link you can chew on new photos, blogs, a pretty long behind-the-scenes feature and of course the high quality version of the trailer that was removed last week. Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II-iv), the film has been given a tentative November 7th limited release, which pits the horror-musical against the new James Bond movie (yikes!). In the not-so-distant future when an epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet, scientists gear for a massive organ harvest. A biotech giant comes up with easy organ payment plans, but all financed organs are subject to legal default, including repossession at the hands of repo men.
