As regulatory approval of Paramount’s sale to Skydance looms, the still Shari Redstone-owned studio now finds itself in a family dogfight over who wrote what on blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.
Filed last night in federal court in New York, a copyright infringement suit from the cousin of the Oscar nominated Eric Warren Singer claims plaintiff Shaun Gray “wrote key scenes for the screenplay that became the Film’s central edge-of-your-seat dramatic action sequences that made it a smash hit.” The complaint is fueled to the hilt with exhibits that place Gray’s alleged work next to what showed up in the script and on-screen of the 2022 Tom Cruise flick, With a bevy of file creation timelines too, the Marc Toberoff represented Gray wants a court declaration for a credit on Maverick as well as some of the nearly $1.5 billion in box office the Joseph Kosinski helmed movie made worldwide.

Shaun Gray, cousin of credited “Top Gun: Maverick” screenwriter Eric Singer, sued Paramount Global on Sunday, saying the studio manipulated and exploited him out of credit and compensation for portions of the script he claims to have written.
Gray claimed in his suit, filed in New York, that he not only participated in story meetings with Singer and “Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski but also wrote “key scenes” in the film’s screenplay that “became the film’s central edge-of-your-seat dramatic action sequences.”
Gray alleged that he was “manipulated and exploited by Hollywood power players” and, therefore, not properly credited or compensated for his work on the 2022 blockbuster.
While Gray has worked primarily as a visual effects artist in Hollywood, he was credited as a writing consultant to Singer on 2017’s “Only the Brave,” which Kosinski also directed, and as Singer’s writer’s assistant on the 2009 thriller “The International.” Gray...

The cousin of “Top Gun: Maverick” screenwriter Eric Singer sued Paramount Pictures on Sunday, claiming he wrote key action scenes in the film without credit or compensation.
Shaun Gray, who has worked primarily as a visual effects artist, alleges that he worked on the script for five months with his cousin and with director Joseph Kosinski, and kept “meticulous, time-stamped files” documenting his contributions.
“This action seeks justice for Gray, a talented screenwriter, manipulated and exploited by Hollywood power players, and demands accountability from Defendants that profited prodigiously by misappropriating Gray’s creative work,” the lawsuit states.
Gray had worked with Singer before “Top Gun,” according to his IMDb profile. He is listed as an uncredited “writing consultant” on “Only the Brave,” a film about wildland firefighters written by Singer and directed by Kosinski. He is also identified as Singer’s writer’s assistant on “The International.”

German auteur Tom Tykwer and producer Uwe Schott decried the limited funding opportunities available to make German-language films, ahead of the world premiere of their film The Light opening this year’s Berlinale.
“It’s always too costly, too expensive if you try and come up with really juicy cinema,” said Tykwer, who holds the record for having directed the most films to open the Berlinale. The Light is his third, after Heaven in 2002 and The International in 2009.

After a decade spent exploring the lives “of my grandparents’ generation” in the 1930-set period series Babylon Berlin, Tom Tykwer has returned his focus to modern-day Germany with the cinematic opus The Light, the opening night film of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival.
Tykwer, along with The Light stars Lars Eidinger and Nicolette Krebitz, and first-timer Tala Al Deen discussed the inspiration behind the feature at the Berlinale press conference ahead of the movie’s world premiere on Thursday.
Lars Eidinger and Nicolette Krebitz play Tim and Milena Engels, a late-40s couple juggling privilege and discontent: He’s a trend-chasing ad exec, holding onto his left-wing progressive views while assisting major corporations in their greenwashing; she’s wrestling with a doomed arts project in Kenya. Their teenage twins spiral in opposite directions — one lost in Berlin’s club scene, the other in a VR fantasy — while their eight-year-old drifts alongside unnoticed.

What Martin Scorsese is for New York; what Paul Thomas Anderson is for Los Angeles; Yasujiro Ozu is for Tokyo and Federico Fellini is for Rome, so Tom Tykwer is for Berlin.
Tykwer has only made three films set in the German capital — his 1998 breakout Run Lola Run, the mid-career highlight 3 (2010) and now The Light, the opening film of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival — but no other director so exemplifies the city, in all its messy glory and contradictions.
“I’ve spent nearly 40 years in Berlin, and everything I need is here,” says Tykwer from his apartment in Prenzlauer Berg. “I have the people I love, the cinemas I need, and the city’s strange aesthetic — these beautiful districts next to catastrophically ugly architecture. It’s what delights and infuriates and inspires me.”

Paddington In Peru is the third movie in the hugely beloved Paddington series, and the sequel follows the titular bear as he travels home to Peru with his adoptive family, the Browns. Just like the films that came before it, Paddington in Peru is a hugely touching and heartwarming adventure about friendship and found family that takes all the stylish strengths of the original two films and reinstates them in a new location with fun, fresh characters. The story of Paddington in Peru is somewhat familiar, but its the family-friendly charm that makes it another smash hit.
Naturally, much of Paddington in Peru was actually filmed in Peru, and the country plays a huge role in the story. Director and producer Tom Tykwer has become managing director of Berlin-based production company X Filme Creative Pool, best known for “Babylon Berlin,” alongside Uwe Schott. Tykwer succeeds Stefan Arndt, one of Germany’s leading producers.
The reorganization of the company’s management is intended to “sharpen the focus on the development and implementation of creative, bold and unusual material for film and television,” according to a statement.
Arndt is leaving at his own request but will remain associated with the company as a producer.
X Filme Creative Pool was founded 30 years ago by Tykwer together with the writers and directors Wolfgang Becker and Dani Levy as well as Arndt. The four founders, who remain shareholders together with Beta Film and Bogey, based themselves on United Artists with the aim of producing sophisticated films with an audience appeal – or, as Variety put it, “intelligent films that audiences want to see.”

With the Nintendo 3Ds eShop closing in March 2023, there are several concerns to be had regarding the system's online services, not the least of which Pokémon's Pokémon Bank. While the app has since been succeeded by the Pokémon Home app on the Switch, Bank was the first way for players to store Pokémon from across their entire history with the franchise, and for those who have yet to migrate their collection to Home, the 3Ds eShop's closure could be a significant issue.
In moving away from its devices preceding the Switch, Nintendo has announced the closure of the Wii U and 3Ds eShops - meaning that there's only a short while for players to buy any of the best Nintendo 3Ds games they might've missed. More pressingly for Pokémon fans, however, is the question of how the 3Ds's online services will function after the closure. With Pokémon Bank likely...

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

MK2 Films, the banner behind Joachim Trier’s Oscar-nominated “The Worst Person in the World,” has boarded “Nezouh,” from Syrian director Soudade Kaadan.
The drama, set against the backdrop of the conflict in Damascus, marks Kaadan’s follow up to her 2018 feature debut, “The Day I Lost My Shadow,” which won the Lion of the Future prize at Venice. Her 2019 short “Aziza,” meanwhile, won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize.
Co-financed by BFI, which awarded National Lottery funding, and Film4, “Nezouh” is an allegorical tale of female emancipation.
The movie follows 14-year-old Zeina and her family, whose lives are shaken after a bomb rips a giant hole in the roof of their building, exposing them to the outside world. One day, a young boy living nearby lowers a rope through the opening and Zeina discovers her first taste of freedom. Whilst her father is determined to stay in his home and not become a refugee,...

It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.
That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.
In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.

Reef Break, the crime drama headlined by former Unforgettable and Without a Trace star Poppy Montgomery, which had a 13-episode run on ABC this past summer, will not be returning to the network.
The cancelation of the series, produced by ABC Studios International, comes on the heels of Disney Television Studios’ move to reevaluate its overseas strategy which included the shutdown of the UK-based ABC Studios International led by Keli Lee.
ABC Studios is not expected to shop Reef Break elsewhere. The series had been originally ordered by France’s M6, with ABC joining as Us distributor.
Montgomery executive produced Reef Break, which was based on her idea, along with Ken Sanzel, who was the writer/showrunner.
Reef Break was an action drama starring Montgomery as Cat Chambers, a thief-turned-fixer for the governor of a stunning and seductive Pacific Island paradise.
It was ABC Studios International’s second global commission...

A couple of months ago it was revealed that Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren were teaming up for a new action series. Well, that series is called The International and CBS has ordered a pilot episode.
Stallone is set to produce and direct the hour-long drama and Lundgren will star in it. He will play Anders Soto, described as “a one-man covert black-ops team working for the U.N., who is called in to find asymmetrical solutions to the world’s most delicate and complex problems. He is part negotiator and part international spy.”
The series is being written by Ken Sanzel and it sounds like it could be a solid show. It’s always good to see Stallone and Lundgren work together.
This will be the first TV series that Stallone will have directed in his career. Hopefully, it turns out good!

With the best movie villains, you know how evil they are the moment you lay eyes on them. And that was exactly the case for Sylvester Stallone when he cast Dolph Lundgren for “Rocky IV.”
In fact he genuinely hated the guy he eventually cast to play Ivan Drago.
“He was like the real Terminator, and I go, ‘I hate this friggin’ guy,'” Stallone told Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” Friday. “He’s just too perfect, too good looking. And if I loathe him, I’m sure the world will. He’s not really, but he looks like something that’s a thousand years in the future. This is not a guy you see waiting on your table.”

Stallone explained how tough it was trying to find a man who could believably play Drago.
