Since the earliest days of cinema, the Western genre has produced some of the richest and most adventurous films in the cinema. These movies document the lives and journeys of characters of varying moral codes who try to survive the brutal Frontier, taking on rival gunslingers, Native American warriors, and the harsh environment. Despite the genre's reputation for gritty stories, plenty of Westerns are accessible to younger viewers.
While Westerns work best when they take a gritty approach to the Old West, there are plenty of movies from the genre perfect for kids that play up adventure instead of violence. From classic swashbuckler heroes of the Western Frontier to animated gunslinger stories, the list of kid-friendly Western movies is surprisingly long. The Wild West remains a place for childhood escapism; these movies are great examples.

Beloved investigative procedural comedy Psych was full of fast-paced jokes and pop culture references, so making full parody episodes was a natural next step. Psych's many parody episodes often played with genre, spoofing everything from The Wild West to Alfred Hitchcock. Of all the Psych episodes that pay homage to other shows and movies over eight seasons, Psych's best parody episode copied Jack Nicholson's crime classic, Chinatown.
Nicholson plays private detective J.J. Gittes trying to uncover a web of corruption in 1930s Los Angeles that builds to Chinatown's surprising ending. In the season 6 finale, the cast of Psych combines their unique humorous interplay with Chinatown's neo-noir tone to make Psych's best parody episode, "Santabarbaratown." A new body is connected to a decades-old unsolved murder, bringing a grittier tone to Santa Barbara while maintaining Psych's signature comedic style.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week’s topic: Best Supporting Actor, which ostensibly has one open slot.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! The Mets are on the brink, the Yankees are hateful, and we’re here to type about Best Supporting Actor. This race has felt top heavy since the summer, when many had Samuel L. Jackson walking away with his first competitive Oscar for “The Piano Lesson.” That feels… unlikely now and it’s very easy to imagine Jackson missing out altogether. So what we’re left with is a group of newcomers to the Oscars stage, one massive movie star, and a couple of “Succession” Emmy winners. Let’s start there, with your favorite Roy son, Kieran Culkin. Indie film is a term that often appears in movie conversations yet rarely gets used in the proper context. A true independent film is produced and distributed outside of the major Hollywood studio system. Many times, films are produced independently, yet have to rely on the major studios for distribution. Also, due to limited media ownership in the United States, many independent film companies are now owned by the major studios themselves.
Since the Western genre's apex in popularity occurred during Hollywood's Golden Age, a time in film history dominated by major studios, most great indie Westerns are more modern releases. In the twenty-first century, indie Westerns have played a significant role in returning the Western genre to critical acclaim. Dances with Wolves, Hell or High Water, and 3:10 to Yuma rank among the greatest indie Westerns of all time.

Like any movie genre, the Western has its fair share of popular subgenres. Well-known Western subgenres include neo-Westerns, revisionist Westerns, and spaghetti Westerns. More obscure Western subgenres include acid Westerns, meat pie Westerns, and weird Westerns. Influential film critic Pauline Kael coined the term acid Western in 1971 in her review of Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo.
In the mid-1990s, Jonathan Rosenbaum expanded upon the definition of acid Westerns. He noted acid Westerns are a type of revisionist Western that reflected the counterculture ideologies of the 1960s and 1970s. Acid Westerns have a hallucinogenic quality that is often aided by surrealist imagery. Rosenbaum also stated that in traditional Westerns, a character's journey West resulted in freedom and prosperity. In Acid Westerns, Rosenbaum argued a character's journey is a march toward death. Clint Eastwood's High Plains Drifter, Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man, and Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid...

Isn’t it remarkable how sometimes, amid rumors and alleged betrayals, the bonds between co-stars can illuminate the true spirit of camaraderie in Tinseltown? In the movie business, loyalty can be hard to come by. But for Kevin Costner, his Horizon: An American Saga co-star Sienna Miller has proven to be a true friend and ally.
While the Yellowstone star may have felt betrayed by Taylor Sheridan, he can take solace in the fact that Miller has his back. Their mutual admiration and respect for each other was on full display as they walked the red carpet for the premiere of Horizon: An American Saga.

Westerns are a cornerstone of the Hollywood film industry that celebrates America's past. The concept of "The Wild West" was initially created in dime novels and adventure stories that exaggerated the average everyday life on the American frontier. Then, decades later, came the moving picture, and Westerns quickly became one of this new medium's most popular genres.
The 1950s and '60s were the undisputed golden age of the Hollywood Western. Since then, the genre's popularity has tapered off, generally buoyed by a few original films and plenty of remakes of classics. Generally speaking, when most film fans hear the term "remake," it makes their skin crawl, but Westerns are one of the few genres capable of elevating a re-do above the original. It doesn't always happen.

Reach for the sky cause Mario Van Peebles has returned to the old West! In 1993, Mario Van Peebles dabbled in the Western genre with Posse, which he had written, directed, and starred in. Now, Peebles has gotten back into the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The trailer has now been released courtesy of Quiver Distribution and features Mario Van Peebles acting alongside his son, Mandela, who also plays his son in the movie. This keeps the tradition of the Van Peebles filmmaking lineage rolling along as Mario was also heavily involved with his father, Melvin Van Peebles’ film career. Mario would even make a biopic where he portrayed his own father with the film Baadasssss!, which is a play on the title of Melvin’s famous movie Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.

SAG-AFTRA has revealed more thinking behind its interim agreements, with leadership saying the initiative is “designed to undermine the production slates and timing of the AMPTP companies and ensure that they come back to the table”.
President Fran Drescher and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland lifted the lid on the agreements, which have been awarded to well over 100 film and TV projects including Angel Studios’ Bible-based series The Chosen; the A24 films Mother Mary and I Dream of Unicorns and Apple TV+’s Tehran, in a note to members.
The comments come after much debate about interim agreements, from the likes of Sarah Silverman, as well as producers, one of which told Deadline that it was “the Wild West”.

It’s 2021. The world is gradually emerging from lockdown, blinking in the balmy sunshine as normal life – its pubs, parks, pubs in the park – begin to bubble with life again. One song is inescapable: an intimate electronic track from a little indie outfit from Oxford. “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals is the indisputable soundtrack of the summer, having come seemingly out of nowhere. Or did it?
When a song goes viral on TikTok, it feels organic. The spread of a danceable pop track, memeable sound bite, or classic Eighties love ballad seemingly happens overnight and at random selection. Suddenly, 14-year-olds are choreographing dances and vloggers are outfit-of-the-daying to it. And just like that, a trending track is born. But even a trend can be manufactured for the right price. Increasingly, TikTok influencers are being paid by PR agencies and music labels to post videos using a particular song in the...

If you're looking for a pleasant surprise today, I have a wonderful trailer here for a new film called Damsel. When I saw that Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska made a western together, I had no idea it would turn out anything like this! Damsel looks like a very fun and quirky film, and I absolutely enjoyed what this first trailer had to offer. I was completely surprised by the kind of film this turned out to be. It looks delightful and now I can't wait to see it! I love it when I stumble on great looking little films like this!
It’s the age of The Wild West, circa 1870. An affluent pioneer, Samuel Alabaster (Robert Pattinson) ventures deep into the American wilderness to reunite with and marry the love of his life, Penelope (Mia Wasikowska). For his journey he brings Butterscotch, a miniature horse intended as a wedding present for his bride,...

"She's the most precious thing in the whole world." Magnolia has unveiled the official trailer for the western comedy Damsel, which premiered at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals earlier this year. Made by the Zellner Brothers (of Kumiko the Treasure Hunter), the film is a "loving reinvention of the western genre" that "showcases [the Zellners'] trademark unpredictability, off-kilter sense of humor, and unique brand of humanism." The story follows a young man who brings a miniature horse to his bride-to-be, only to discover she has plans of her own. Robert Pattinson co-stars with Mia Wasikowska, with a cast includes David & Nathan Zellner, Robert Forster, Joseph Billingiere, Morgan Lund, and Ray Kelleher. The 'lil horse, named Butterscotch, totally steals the show. One of the best indie comedies from Sundance this year. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for the Zellner Brothers' Damsel, direct from YouTube: It's the age of The Wild West,...

The stunning vistas aren’t the only signifiers of the western genre in Damsel, yet we quickly grasp that David and Nathan Zellner have crafted revisionist take on the genre, lovingly poking fun at its foundation while slyly pulling the rug under the audience in humorous, forward-thinking, and genre-redefining fashion.
Following Samuel (Robert Pattinson) as he goes on a rescue mission to save his true love Penelope (Mia Wasikowska), we won’t spoil anything beyond that, but rest assured, it’s a humorous, inventive western that could only come from the brothers who last gave us Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter.
Following the Sundance premiere, Magnolia Pictures picked up the film for a summer release and now the first trailer has landed, which can be seen below. One can also read our interview with the Zellners here.

"Outlander" star Sam Heughan would like to remind 'Batman' fans he previously played the 'Caped Crusader' in Warners "Batman Live: Arena Tour" and is more than ready to play the DC Comics' superhero again for Warners "The Batman" stand-alone feature, as a chisled-looking, super-physically fit character, rather than a grizzled Ben Affleck, or rodent-faced Christian Bale:
Heughan is a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and a 2003 nominee for the 'Laurence Olivier Award' for 'Most Promising Performance'.
In 2012, he originated the role of 'Batman' in the DC/Warner Brothers and Waterlane production of "Batman Live," an international tour which opened at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles and went on to tour in South America and throughout Europe.
In 2010, Heughan was nominated for a British Soap Award for 'Villain of the Year' for his role as 'Scott Neilson' in the...

Speculation continues as to who will take on the role of 'Batman' in director Zack Snyder's developing 2015 feature "Batman Vs Superman", playing against "Man Of Steel" actor Henry Cavill.
Some industry trades have suggested that Jeffrey Dean Morgan ("Watchmen") will play an older bagged-out 'Caped Crusader', even though Morgan's headlining series "Magic City" was recently cancelled after a 2-season run.
Another actor in consideration to play the 'Caped Crusader' is 6' 3" Sam Heughan.
Heughan played 'Bruce Wayne/Batman' in Warners' "Batman Live: Arena Tour" and recently snagged the coveted role of long-haired Scottish warrior 'Jamie Fraser' in the upcoming Starz TV series "Outlander", adapting the New York Times best-selling book series.

Starz announced on Tuesday (July 9) that Sam Heughan will play the male lead, Jamie Fraser, in "Outlander." Adapted from a series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, the TV series will premiere in 2014.
Heughan's character of Jamie is a Scottish warrior living in the mid-18th century. He begins a passionate affair with Claire Randall, a combat nurse from 1945 England who is mysteriously transported back in time to 1743. The character of Jamie is described as "intelligent, principled, and, by 18th century standards, educated and worldly, with a tenderness and compassion that stands out in contrast to his contemporaries." A man with a price on his head, Jamie wants nothing more than to return to his family's farm.
"Oh. My. God. That man is a Scot to the bone and Jamie Fraser to the heart," author Diana Gabaldon said of the casting choice. "Having seen Sam Heughan not just act, but be Jamie,...
