Plot: Based on the Edgar Award-winning non-fiction book from author James L. Swanson, “Manhunt” is a conspiracy thriller about one of the best known but least understood crimes in history, the astonishing story of the hunt for John Wilkes Booth in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
Review: The life and untimely death of Abraham Lincoln have been fodder for film and television since the invention of the medium. Before that, books and stage plays told the story of the President who ended the Civil War, abolished slavery, and died unceremoniously. But, in all of the tales of Honest Abe and his killer, John Wilkes Booth, few have chronicled the tumultuous aftermath between Ford’s Theater and the capture of those who perpetrated the heinous murder. Aside from Robert Redford’s The Conspirator, which focused on the trial of Booth’s accomplices, we have never gotten a full retelling of the events.

Eleven months in to 2021, and Warner Bros. movie streaming strategy on HBO Max is still going strong. Now the list of new releases for November 2021 on HBO Max is highlighted by yet another big ticket film.
King Richard, starring Will Smith, is set to arrive on HBO Max and in theaters on Nov. 19. The movie will tell the story of Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. Smith is already getting some early awards buzz for the role so Oscar-heads may want to check this one out.

November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. Exclusive Producers Webster Stone and Robert Stone have acquired rights to Anthony Bourdain’s crime novel Gone Bamboo for a scripted series based on a pilot. The 1997 book was the celebrity chef’s second published work of fiction.
Set on the island of St. Martin, Gone Bamboo follows sharpshooting hedonistic assassin Henry Denard, who botches a career-capping hit. Denard must enlist the help of his skilled, stunning, and volatile wife to save their skins, dispatch the villains, and keep the peace — at all costs — in their tropical paradise.
“I wanted to write a sociopath beach book,” writes Bourdain in the book’s introduction. “I wanted a hero and heroine as lazy, mercenary, lustful and free of redeeming qualities as I sometimes see myself.”

Spooky season is upon us, and Hulu is getting into the spirit with a number of horror or Halloween-themed offerings on its October line-up.
Along with Hulu originals like the horror anthology “Into the Dark” and the second season of Stephen King’s “Castle Rock,” the streamer is also offering films from the “Saw,” “Blade” and “Hellraiser” franchises beginning next month. For the more faint of heart, Hulu is also offering three seasons of Food Network’s “Halloween Wars” and the surely adorable “Kids Halloween Baking Championship.”
Not specifically Halloween-themed, but potentially haunting: All six seasons of the original run of “The Hills” will be available to stream on Oct. 1 for those looking to revisit the halcyon days of reality television and questionable late-aughts fashion.

Robert Redford says he’s retiring from acting after teasing the end of his career in front of the camera two years ago.
“Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and [I’ll] move towards retirement after this ’cause I’ve been doing it since I was 21,” Redford, 81, told Entertainment Weekly. “I thought, Well, that’s enough. After having made almost 80 films, one of the all-time greats, Robert Redford, has announced that he’ll be retiring from acting. His career his almost unparalleled in Hollywood, having delivered timeless classics like The Sting, All The President’s Men, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, among countless others. Even in his later years he was still doing excellent work in movies such as All is Lost and even Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Redford announced his retirement recently during an interview at the Walker Art Center, saying:
“I’m getting tired of acting. I’m an impatient person, so it’s hard for me to sit around and do take after take after take,” he tells his grandson Dylan Redford in a recent career-spanning interview at Walker Art Center. “At this point in my life, age 80, it’d give me more satisfaction because I’m not dependent on anybody.

There’s so much going on in the unlikely action drama The Accountant that I think we can be forgiven for wondering whether writer Bill Dubuque (The Judge) and director Gavin O’Connor (Jane Got a Gun, Pride and Glory) are attempting to give us a little taste of what the world must be like for its hero, Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck). Wolff calls himself a high-functioning autistic, but he’s not that high-functioning: the tentative control he seems to have over the sensory overload he suffers from is a result of daily desensitization sessions, during which he subjects himself...

One of the many perks of living in Los Angeles is one's ability to run into actors, filmmakers and other random celebrities at any time. While I get to talk to actors and filmmakers regularly as part of my job, it's always pleasant when you run into someone in public, who is just genuinely nice and cool. In January, while waiting in a concessions line at a movie theater, I realized I was standing in front of Toby Kebbell. I eventually introduced myself, told him I was a fan, and we had a pleasant and brief conversation. Over the weekend, when we met again to chat about Ben-Hur, I was surprised he remembered our conversation from the "candy line," from more than eight months ago.

Tim here. Robin Wright turns 50 today, and it's my good fortune to wish her a very happy birthday on behalf of the Film Experience. She's entering the decade of her life that generally finds actresses facing the worst odds they ever get from the powers that be in Hollywood (there's that infamous stat that only two women have ever won a Best Actress Oscar in their 50s), but for my tastes, she's never been more interesting than in the past few years.
Indeed, it's been only in this decade that Wright has gotten some of her best-ever movie roles, on top a key performance in the Netflix hit House of Cards, and really gotten to show off as an actress. Some of her best film work, sadly, has been in underperforming movies that most people have never seen or heard of; what better excuse than a birthday to go out...

How did a genre-smashing director make a heist thriller so generic, with characters too unlikable to be engaging but not twisted enough to be intriguing? I’m “biast” (pro): love John Hillcoat’s films, love Ejiofor and Winslet
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
A new film from Australian director John Hillcoat should be reason to celebrate. In 2012 he gave us Lawless, a novelistic Prohibition-era tale of corrupt cops and honest criminals. His 2006 outback-set The Proposition was as much horror flick as brutal revisionist Western. In between, in 2009, he went ultra-postapocalyptic in the harrowing The Road. This is a filmmaker who smashes stereotypes in well-explored genres makes us see familiar stories from new angles. He makes B movies feel like prestige dramas.
So what the heck happened with Triple 9? How did Hillcoat manage to make an urban heist thriller feel so,...

After returning to his iconic character Han Solo in last month's blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Harrison Ford has found his follow-up. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the icon has joined Natalie Dormer in the upcoming political thriller Official Secrets. They join a cast that also includes Anthony Hopkins, Paul Bettany and Martin Freeman.
The plot is adapted from the book The Spy Who Tried to Stop a War: Katharine Gun and the Secret Plot to Sanction the Iraq Invasion by Marcia Mitchell and Thomas Mitchell. Natalie Dormer is portraying Katharine Gun, a young British spy who was arrested for leaking information to the press. The information claimed the U.S. engaged in illegal activities to pressure the United Nations Security Council into passing their resolution to go to war with Iraq.

Strange Magic is the first animated feature George Lucas has had a hand in since 1988’s The Land Before Time, and he should have left well enough alone.
Lucas gets a story credit and served as executive producer, but this has the whiff of a vanity project for cowriter and director Gary Rydstrom, making his feature debut. Yes, legendary sound designer Gary Rydstrom, who’s won seven Oscars in that field and has created some of the most memorable movie noises ever for films including Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, and Minority Report, but who, the evidence of this movie suggests, has no business writing and directing a movie.

Kevin Kline’s “old lady” is not what you might perhaps be expecting. He’s a New Yorker who comes to Paris to check out the apartment his recently deceased French father has left him only to discover that Maggie Smith is living there. Turns out his dad got the place on the cheap many years earlier thanks to a peculiar quirk of Parisian real estate: the purchase was such a bargain because it was a viager, which entitles the former owner to continue living in the property and get paid a sort of reverse-mortgage by the new owner until the seller dies. British actor Toby Kebbell has begun negotiations to play the antagonist Doctor Doom in the upcoming "Fantastic Four" reboot at 20th Century Fox.

The actor has had countless supporting roles in many major Hollywood films in recent years including "War Horse," "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," "Wrath of the Titans," "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," "Rocknrolla," "The Counselor," "The Conspirator"

Oh my goddess. Where did Frozen come from? It didn’t come from Hans Christian Andersen, that’s for certain; this bears so little resemblance to his “The Snow Queen” that I wonder why they even bothered with the connection. It did spring from the grand Disney tradition of full-on Broadway-style animated musicals, like we haven’t really seen since the 1990s. But unlike 2009’s throwback The Princess and the Frog, which felt like nothing more than a tired retread of the pursuit-of-romance motif that had long since been laid to rest,...

The first thing that is likely to catch your eye about The Company You Keep, the latest directorial effort from Robert Redford, is the vast amount of star power it contains. I can’t recall having seen so impressive a cast for at least the last several years. Take a look at this list: Robert Redford, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Julie Christie, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Brendan Gleeson, Anna Kendrick, and Sam Elliott. These names, most of whom have won or have been nominated for an Academy Award, would be enough to convince most people to give the film a shot, but then again, more details on the film couldn’t hurt.
The plot revolves around a group of ex-radicals known as the “Weather Underground.” A few decades ago, they staged numerous protests and even committed a number of violent acts, including a bank robbery. Years later,...

James Badge Dale. You may not know him by name, but you’re probably familiar with his face. Appearing in shows like 24, Rubicon and The Pacific, and films like Flight, The Grey and Shame, has given the actor an impressive career thus far. Now, with the Summer of 2013 upon us, James Badge Dale is about to gain a whole lot more exposure as he has already appeared in two major blockbusters (Iron Man 3 and World War Z) and has one more on the horizon: The Lone Ranger.
In his upcoming film, James Badge Dale plays Dan Reid, the brother of the titular ranger. Though it’s more of a supporting part, Dale brings his always reliable acting chops to the table and turns in a strong performance, one that helps him to stand out in a star studded cast that includes Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.

Note: Film critic Tim Grierson is attending the Cannes Film Festival for the first time. For Backstage, he’ll be filing occasional diary entries about his thoughts and impressions of the granddaddy of all film festivals. Wednesday, May 22, 11:16pm For too long, Robert Redford has been around but not really present. Overseeing the Sundance Film Festival and popping up to introduce movies on the Sundance Channel, he’s still in the public eye, but for too long he’s seemingly been happy enjoying his emeritus status in the film industry. It’s not like he’s stopped making movies, but unfortunately in the last several years, those movies—“Lions for Lambs,” “The Conspirator,” “The Company You Keep”—have failed to wow critics or do much box office. Everybody regards him as an institution, but it’s hard to say that many people think of him as all that relevant anymore.

James Badge Dale talks about taking on the role of Coldblood in Iron Man 3, currently playing in theaters everywhere
After making his film debut at just 12 years of age in 1990's Lord of the Flies, James Badge Dale returned to the craft with a string of roles in the early 2000s, appearing on 24 as Chase Edmunds, Rescue Me as Timo Gavin, and The Black Donnellys as Samson. He had a breakout year in 2010, starring in the HBO mini-series The Pacific and the brilliant but short-lived AMC show Rubicon, which lead to impressive turns in The Conspirator, Shame, The Grey, and Flight. This versatile actor returns to the big screen once again in Iron Man 3 as the villainous Eric Savin a.k.a. Coldblood, the Extremis-enhanced soldier who does the dirty work for Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian. I recently had the chance to speak with James Badge Dale about his bad-ass bald look,...

At the domestic box office this weekend, Pain and Gain claimed the top spot with a decent $20.2 million, while The Big Wedding was a big flop. The real story, though, was the overseas box office, where Iron Man 3 opened a week early. Playing in 79 percent of foreign markets, the Marvel three-quel grossed $198.4 million, which is up on The Avengers's $185 million start at the same time last year. For a full by-territory breakdown and thoughts on the movie's long-term prospects, check out the Around-the-World Roundup at the bottom of this article. With Iron Man 3 still a week away in the U.S., Pain and Gain was able to narrowly beat Oblivion to take first place at the domestic box office. Playing at 3,277 locations, the movie's $20.2 million debut is one of the lower starts in director Michael Bay's career, though all of his movies (with the exception of 1995's...

Watergate Remembered in Discovery Channel Documentary 'Celebrating' the 40th Anniversary of the Watergate Scandal The Washington Post and American journalistic ethics in general may be only a shadow of what they once were -- and most of the U.S. press was never really all that great or even borderline trustworthy to begin with -- but Robert Redford remains the same, glimpsed here with Watergate investigators Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, and former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee, shot (not literally) by Annie Leibovitz. Pictured above: Redford with Bernstein, Bradlee, and Woodward in the iconic Washington Post newsroom. The four veterans got together to promote the Discovery Channel doc All the President’s Men Revisited, about the 40th anniversary of the Watergate scandal that destroyed the Nixon presidency. With Redford as one of its executive producers, the documentary airs this month. Redford played Woodward opposite Dustin Hoffman's Bernstein in...

Justin Long grew up watching and loving Woody Allen movies, so it’s no surprise that he absorbed the line from 1989′s Crimes and Misdemeanors, that “Comedy is tragedy, plus time.” When Long and Keir O’Donnell (Wedding Crashers) were simultaneously recovering from painful romantic breakups several years ago, they channeled their pain into the romantic-comedy script that became A Case of You, which premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival this Sunday.

The St. Louis Globe-Democrat is a monthly newspaper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it’s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. The concept of The Globe is that there is an old historic headline, then all the articles in that issue are written as though it’s the year that the headline is from. It’s an unusual concept but the paper is now in its 25th successful year! Steve and I collaborated in May of 2011 on an all-Vincent Price issue of The Globe and I’ve been writing a regular monthly movie-related column since. Since there is no on-line version of The Globe, I post all of my articles here at We Are Movie Geeks. This month’s edition of The Globe takes place in 1865, the year President Lincoln was shot .Steve and I originally decided I would write an article...

I confess I haven't thought much about Robert Redford's "The Company You Keep" -- which finally opens in theaters tomorrow -- since reviewing it at the Venice Film Festival seven months ago. Though it takes on the potentially incendiary subject matter of the Weather Underground, the film's political ideas are handled as softly as the lighting on its veteran stars' faces -- but as an old-school Hollywood entertainment with a classy, cannily cast ensemble, it mostly delivers the goods. I'd call it Redford's strongest directorial effort since 1994's Oscar-nominated "Quiz Show," though films like "Lions for Lambs" and "The Conspirator" have admittedly...

After three strong supporting roles in 2011 ("Moneyball," "Rampart," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"), Robin Wright returned with headliner power in Netflix's "House of Cards." Much has been said about how the show (reviews: Toh, Indiewire) heralds the new post-tv era (as of February 12 it was the most-streamed title on Netflix). But for many observers, the big reveal of the series (available in its 13-episode entirety on Netflix) is not the always showy Kevin Spacey, or yet another wily Mara sister, but scene-stealer Wright as Washington powerbroker Claire Underwood. Now 46, one-time Wright-Penn (she was married to Sean Penn for 14 years) has consistently delivered creme de la creme performances, from "Princess Bride" and "Forrest Gump" to "The Conspirator," just not in flashy lead roles or widely-seen tentpoles. As The National Post writes, "Wright is the revelation." Her career has not only...
