With the majority of big global TV distributors opting out of a physical presence at Mipcom, the flashy stands have been replaced by snazzy digital platforms showcasing content rolling out starting this fall.
Among them are a series of virtual festivals by Banijay, which acquired Endemol Shine in summer 2020 and boasts a catalog of more than 88,000 hours of programming. Rather than join Mipcom organizer Reed Midem’s virtual Mipcom Online Plus event, the mega-indie is going its own way, as are so many other distributors.
The latest of its planned digital forays is a non-English language scripted festival designed to showcase the group’s eclectic mix of European dramas. These include six-part French show “Germinal,” a modern adaptation of Émile Zola’s classic 1985 coal-mining strike saga; Swedish boarding-school drama “A Class Apart”; and Italian coming-of-age series “My Ballerina,” a co-production with Italy’s Mediaset.

The easiest way to review Steve Dildarian’s new HBO Max animated comedy would simply be to say that if you were a fan of Dildarian’s The Life & Times of Tim, you’ll surely enjoy Ten Year Old Tom.

In their first public appearance since WarnerMedia merged the two development divisions this past April, execs from HBO Max and Adult Swim previewed their upcoming slates, releasing new footage from adult-skewing offerings “10-Year-Old-Tom” and “Smiling Friends,” while talking up several more.
Created by Michael Cusack (“Yolo: Crystal Fantasy”) and Zack Hadel (of the popular YouTube channel “psychicpebbles”), “Smiling Friends” picks up where the viral 2020 short left off, following the lives of two hapless cheer merchants sent to make their clients smile. Mixing 2D, primitive character designs with candy colors and the winking edge of an online forum, the series is due out later this year.
“[Though they’re both well known independently,] combined, Hadel and Cusack are doing something really special,” said Walter Newman, senior VP comedy development at Adult Swim. “From the character designs to the voice work, it represents a lot of what we’re trying to accomplish here.”

Exclusive: ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group has appointed former Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox TV animation executive Grant Gish to spearhead the expansion into adult animation.
Gish will lead the new Adult Animation Unit as SVP, Adult Animation, Entertainment & Youth Brands. He starts August 31.
Adult animation has been a priority area for Entertainment & Youth Group President Chris McCarthy, originally at MTV Studios and more recently also at Comedy Central after he took oversight of the comedy-centric cable network in the post-Viacom-CBS merger restructuring late last year.
The strategy so far has involved mining the MTV library of iconic adult animation IP. That includes two reboots with the original series’ creators, Beavis and Butt-Head with Mike Judge and Clone High with Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Bill Lawrence; as well as Jodie, based on the classic MTV series, Daria. Of the three, two have been set up at a network,...

Amazon released five new pilots on Friday, and it’s up to viewers to determine which ones get picked up. “The Legend of Master Legend,” “Budding Prospects,” “The New V.I.P.’s,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Oasis” make up the 2017 Amazon pilot season. Some are good, some are bad, but the power lies with all of us to determine which are worthy of a full season order. Read our reviews below to get a little insight into each offering, and watch the episodes for yourself right here.

John Hawkes can’t catch a break. When he nabbed the lead in Charlie Kaufman’s FX pilot — Charlie Kaufman — it didn’t get picked up. He landed an Oscar nomination for “The Sessions,” but his follow-ups have meant diddly-squat comparatively. Well, we can all thank Netflix aka The Pet Sematary again. Ms. Frizzle and the gang will make a return to television thanks to the streaming giant. The Magic Schoolbus 360 will deliver 26 half hour CGI episodes, which will air in the Fall of 201. And, there are celebrity cameos to look forward to. Don't worry, some original cast members signed on to return as well. It's hard to believe the original television show only aired for four seasons, back in 1994.
Can you stand the wait? Well, let's hope the show has more moments like the clip below... And, it could be pretty educational too. The reboot will be headed by 9 Story Media Group, Scholastic, and Netflix jointly. Someone get them to bring back The Life and Times of Tim (search YouTube).

Sebastian Junger earned an Oscar nomination in 2010 for the first film he ever directed, "Restrepo," a documentary about American soldiers at war in Afghanistan. Little more than a year later, Junger would unwittingly begin work on a second documentary -- the tale of his "Restrepo" co-director, Tim Hetherington. Junger had planned on going to Libya with Hetherington but was unable to for personal reasons. Instead, the emotional interviews with those beside Hetherington when he was wounded inspired a cinematic tribute, "Which Way Is the Front Line? The Life and Times of Tim...

Nick Kroll, who you may have seen on VH1's Best Week Ever or possibly even recognized as a voice on The Life and Times of Tim but definitely saw his breakout role on FX's The League is breaking out with a show on his own on Comedy Central, and a la Dave Chappelle, or perhaps the latest successes Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, the network eventually said to hell with it, and just named the series after the guy's last name. Kroll Show will feature Nick portraying various characters, which should be funny because oh my gosh, he's wearing a dress! And now a moustache! Watch two scenes in the slideshow above, then if you're into it, check out Kroll Show's pilot episode over at Comedy Central and let us know what you think.
The Kroll Show premieres January 16th at 10:30pm on Comedy Central, following the season premiere of Workaholics.

As we head into the final week of holiday shopping, there are plenty of last-minute releases hitting DVD and Blu-ray just in time to end up as potential Christmas gifts. The biggest titles include Len Wiseman's Total Recall remake and Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil: Retribution, along with the Joseph Gordon-Levitt bike courier thriller Premium Rush. Looking beyond that, we also have the well-received musical comedy Pitch Perfect, Spike Lee's Red Hook Summer and William Friedkin's Killer Joe. (Take note that a handful of these don't actually hit stores until Friday.) Also keep an eye out for new seasons of Shameless, Californication and The Life and Times of Tim, and if that's not enough, Michael Stephenson's haunted house documentary The American Scream is also out this week, available exclusively through the movie's official website. What will you be buying or watching this week? Check out...

ABC, which has one family comedy with a male lead on the air in Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing, is developing another multi-camera family half-hour centered on a guy played by a stand-up comedian. The network has bought Big Children, written/executive produced by Scott Marder (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) and starring actor-comedian Rory Scovel (The Life And Times Of Tim). Produced by ABC Studios, it centers on a thirtysomething “only child” (Scovel) who must move home and parent his parents after they retire and revert to acting like children with too much time on their hands. Scovel is repped by CAA, which also reps Marder, Mosaic and Isaac Dunham.

The name might not jump out, yet it’s almost impossible that a reader hasn’t seen Melanie Lynskey at one point or another. The New Zealand actress first came on the scene with Peter Jackson‘s 1994 drama, Heavenly Creatures, and, in the nearly two-decade period since, established herself as one of the more unique actresses working today. Be it a memorable turn in Steven Soderbergh‘s The Informant! or quick appearances in Away We Go and Win Win, she’s one who never fails to leave some kind of mark.
Lynskey‘s been given a rare starring part with this month’s Hello I Must Be Going, a dramedy which allows her to take center stage and command the screen from start to finish. I made sure to start off with the film that granted a nice opportunity to chat, but soon moved into questions about an eclectic career,...

HBO co-presidents of programming Richard Plepler and Michael Lombardo kicked off HBO's portion of the Television Critics Association press tour Wednesday, with news of a Rolling Stones documentary movie, more scoop on Larry David's latest project for the network and much, much more.
Now, some updates on upcoming projects, shows that are now dead (for real this time) and, yes, it wouldn't be an HBO TCA session without an update on the "Deadwood" movie.
The "Entourage" movie
What's the status of the "Entourage" movie? "Doug [Ellin], as of this week, is on page 65. He's excited about it," Lombardo said -- but it's not a done deal just yet. "After we take a look at the script ... we still have to make deals with the cast and see if this is something we want to do."

It was recently announced that HBO had once again cancelled The Life and Times of Tim, their offbeat animated series. The last episode aired on February 17th and ended on interesting note.
In the episode's second segment, titled "Corporate Disaster," an implosion at an Omnicorp factory causes a massive sinkhole in New Jersey. A tough PR woman is brought in for damage control and decides that Tim should be the face of the company as they deal with fallout from the huge ecological disaster. At a press conference at the site, Tim's been instructed not to take blame but he's finally unable to control himself and says that the company's not sorry at all -- or maybe only a little bit sorry.
Due to the terms of his previous settlement with Omnicorp, Tim can't be fired for the blunder and they decide to send...

Is this finally the end of "The Life and Times of Tim"? The frequently endangered animated comedy has reportedly been canceled again by HBO. According to Variety, the Steve Dildarian-created comedy is done at HBO after three seasons. The last original episode of "The Life and Times of Tim" aired on February 17. That seems like horrible news, but it's not like "The Life and Times of Tim" hasn't been canceled before. In June of 2010, HBO pulled the plug on "Tim" after its second season, only to order a third season two months later. The long delay...

His name might be Tim, but no one really ever calls him that, because though we take it for granted, people calling you by your actual name is actually a sign of respect. And Tim doesn't really get any respect, from anyone. That's not a sad thing though, especially when the results are as funny as HBO's The Life and Times of Tim. It doesn't get the buzz that many other animated series get, but it's every bit as deserving. Few shows can serve up such a pitiful protagonist, put him through hell, and make it hilarious as he powerlessly objects to all the unfortunate happenstances that pile on.

With Family Guy, The Simpsons, and now, arguably, South Park in the sunsets of their respective reigns, a new generation of cartoons has begun creeping into the spotlight. However, unlike that other trio, network television is no longer the main stage. Comedy Central has Futurama, HBO has The Life and Times of Tim, Adult Swim has The Venture Bros, and FX has Archer. All things considered, FX should thank its lucky stars. In Archer, FX has one of the consistently funniest shows on television, despite the fact that Archer’s premise is a spy parody – a subgenre that has seemingly been done to death. The first season of Archer established the show as one of the best non-network comedies, and its second dispelled any doubts that it was all just a fluke. Archer stands as one of television’s most reliable comedies, thanks to, or perhaps in spite of, its...

Jesus promised that one day the meek would inherit the Earth, but he failed to mention how hellish their lives would be until that unspecified day came. If you’re curious as to that answer then you need look no further than The Life and Times of Tim, HBO’s simply animated series about a guy who has a hard time standing up to his friends, co-workers, girlfriend, and complete strangers and consequently finds himself doing many things he doesn’t want to. The uneasy brand of comedy definitely isn’t for everyone and its dryness borders on dehydrated. In its second season, The Life and Times of Tim hits a nice pace that sees a handful of belly laughs per episode and just enough awkward humor to make you glad you’re not Tim.

Back for a third round of what can only be described as its very own brand of humor, Tim discovered something valuable about himself on the season premiere of "The Life and Times of Tim" (Fri., 9Pm Et on HBO). He is a terrible tipper.
The first hint wasn't a hint at all, but a rather blatant statement from the Chinese delivery guy after Tim gave him the quarter difference from the $9.75 total and a 10-dollar bill. "Your nickname to us is Mr. 5%," the delivery guy told him."
"I base it on distance traveled. You guys are like two doors down," Tim explained lamely.
That self-righteous arrogance and certainty, much like Larry David, came back to haunt him when he and Stu inadvertently tracked down Tim's old barber. The guy had moved and told all his "preferred" customers his new location, but neglected to tell Tim. After Tim basically told...
