Some anime are best watched once, especially if the best thing going for them is their big plot twist. Other series, however, are endlessly rewatchable. These are the series that never lose their charm, no matter how many times you revisit them. Some are cozy, others become comfort watches, and just plain fun to visit again and again.
While most people would rather revisit a live-action series from their childhood or a series that makes them feel good, anime fans will likely do the same thing with their favorite series. From feel-good vibes and lovable characters to stylish action and slick animation, there are plenty of elements that make an anime worth rewatching.

It's not easy for any anime series or movie to rank among the greats, even when things are narrowed down to a single demographic like shonen. In particular, shonen is home to some of the most popular, deepest, and most intriguing anime of all, making it a competitive field. For any shonen anime to be a masterpiece in the face of so much competition, an anime needs something truly special.
Some of the legendary greats in shonen anime simply do what most shonen do, but with better and more consistent quality, and other shonen masterpieces have a more unique angle or theme to make them worth any anime fan's time. Masterpiece anime also tend to have excellent production quality for their animation, sound, and voice acting, though even then, some anime take those production values to the next level even when compared to other masterpieces.

A prolific and multifaceted medium that has been steadily going global with its appeal, anime has an affinity to venture into all kinds of narratives, from endlessly engrossing action flicks to somber and profound meditations on the human condition. Within anime's many-sided catalog of unorthodox stories, some may stumble upon films and series that touch them on a level beyond appealing to baseline entertainment.
These anime titles — some of which are known for being thought-provoking, while others may surprise the viewers with their subtle ability to make an impact — can become a life-altering experience, making audiences reflect on their values, attitudes, and existential notions. For the most part, anime characters are written to be exciting in battle yet are clearly fallible, having clear weaknesses their enemies might take advantage of. That creates proper tension and suspense in a fight, most of all in battle shonen anime, but some characters simply broke all the rules to become nigh-invulnerable. They pulled that off either by being strong enough to defeat any other opponent first, or by having special traits making them impossible to properly kill.
Interestingly, the list of near-invincible anime characters includes both heroes and villains, which calls for unique tricks in the writing for any anime. An invincible villain boosts the tension through the roof as the heroes struggle to find a way to beat the unbeatable, while invincible heroes aren't relatable on a physical level, so their personal arc is about something else entirely.

Even if the anime is bigger and better than ever, not everyone is interested in watching those shows, and some anime may feel downright repulsive to some pop culture fans. It's true some anime are palatable for anime skeptics, such as those with a historical angle or influenced by Western comic books, but other anime series will simply never win over the haters.
That means any anime fan who wants to get their friends into anime ought to be choosy about what they expose potential new viewers to. While Black Lagoon may appeal to Tarantino fans and Vinland Saga may suit fans of historical dramas, other anime series lean too heavily into anime motifs to draw in new fans. This is because of the "you know it when you see it" factor of how flamboyantly an anime series embraces the industry's vibes, from goofy dialogue to chibi-based comedy or other tropes.

Superman and Batman — they've been super friends and super adversaries, but they are the most inseparable of all superheroes. They're just perfect foils; one bright and friendly, one dour and reserved. Even their costumes reflect this. Both Superman and Batman's outfits use the same broad design layout: two-dominant colors, with a cape, yellow belt above strongman trunks, and a chest insignia. But Superman wears American red and blue, while Batman cloaks himself in the shadows of black and grey — not to mention wearing a mask, showing himself as more secretive than the outgoing Superman.
Though the Batman of James Gunn's new DC Universe made his first, small appearance in "Creature Commandos," Gunn has said we shouldn't expect to see Batman in the upcoming Superman movie. But there's another Superman on TV right now.

Plenty of great anime have come and gone over the years. Whether you're looking for the next big shōnen action series or a casual slice-of-life comedy, there are plenty of great options for viewers to choose from. Series like Naruto, Chainsaw Man, and My Dress Up Darling are all outstanding anime that got their start through their stellar manga. Even if the anime is more well known, a good manga could be a great gateway for new fans to jump into the next big anime franchise.
However, not all manga adaptations are created equal. For every great adaptation of a series like Psycho-Pass, there are bound to be just as many that miss the mark. It's a shame that many manga adaptations don't get the time they deserve to truly shine. Many times, the subsequent anime could be so bad that it ruins the reputation of the entire series. Any...

The mecha anime genre has been prolific within the medium for decades, with many people associating the very concept of giant robots with anime. One of the biggest mecha franchises of them all is easily Mobile Suit Gundam, which has been similarly synonymous with mecha for over 40 years. It paved the way for many other brands and created the "Real Robot" subgenre, but there are also many other major mecha anime throughout the years.
Be they Real Robot or Super Robot anime, there are several franchises besides Gundam that have made a mark on the anime medium. These include some of the first mecha of them all, as well as properties that came about in the past few decades. These revolutionized the genre and pushed it forward in tangible, substantial ways.

While not as iconic a decade as the 1990s, the 2000s were nonetheless a great era for anime. Some of the most famous and popular anime of all time like Naruto, Bleach, and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann took off during this time, and with how many people grew up with those anime and others, it’s hard to deny the era’s impact and influence on the community for years to come.
The 2000s was a great era for anime, but unfortunately, not everything from that era left a mark. Science fiction is one of the most prevalent genres of anime, and while supernatural fantasy might be a bit more common, sci-fi certainly has its place. As a result, the decades have seen numerous sci-fi classics in the medium, many of which have found their way onto various streaming platforms. Thankfully, many of those shows are available on Crunchyroll, and some of the best can be watched fairly quickly.
Crunchyroll has sci-fi anime classics such as Gurren Lagann, Planetes and several Gundam shows, with all of these offering different looks at the genre. From fairly dark and serious to more lighthearted, these works use concepts like robots, space travel and other narrative elements to explore humanity's relationship with technology and the world at large. Best of all, many of these aren't a massive time commitment, so fans looking to binge-watch a show over the weekend can do so.

An essential part of a superhero's identity is their costume. The color scheme and silhouette of a hero's clothes tell you a lot about them. Batman's black costume fades into the shadows as a dark knight's should, whereas Superman's bright blue and red one speaks to "Truth, Justice, and the American Way."
Who's the comic (anti)hero with the tightest bond to their costume? Venom, of course, for his suit (a dark mirror of Spider-Man) is a living being. The "Venom" movie trilogy leaned in on this, becoming a buddy-romantic comedy between Eddie Brock and the eponymous symbiote alien (both played by Tom Hardy). In the world of shonen anime, protagonists tend to get what they deserve in the end, one way or another. Hard work usually pays off for shonen heroes, including protagonists and sidekicks, and a hero's kindness and idealism will be richly rewarded as well. Still, for the sake of a good story, shonen heroes tend to suffer, often unfairly. Plenty of those characters had their lives shaped by trauma and suffered greatly through no fault of their own.
Some shonen heroes stand out for having especially unfair and harsh treatment by fate, and they all deserve better. In some cases, the heroes deserve better from the people and circumstances around them, and in other cases, the mistreatment is meta, since those heroes deserved more and better screen time than they got. If they got the screen time and writing they deserved, then they could have realized their full potential.

Shnen is one of the most popular genres in anime. It's a genre targeting boys and young men, featuring amazing fights, awesome world-building, and some of the best friendships around. While it might not seem so, friendships are huge in shnen anime. Most protagonists have a best friend they can rely on, helping to push them to new heights. Some of the best friendships in shnen aren't between the protagonist, but between two other characters who have each other's backs no matter what.

When an anime character glows up, they will rapidly improve and change themselves for the better. This can be done in a simple and realistic way, such as upgrading one's own wardrobe and personal image, while in shonen anime, glow-ups tend to be more drastic. When a shonen character glows up, they may return from a time skip and be older with greater power, or a character might glow up when they gain all-new powers and abilities overnight.
It's empowering and inspiring to see shonen characters glow up like that, especially when it's the result of hard work. Even if a glow-up isn't quite so sympathetic, the power-up will still open the doors to bigger and better battles as the hero fights in entirely new ways. Glow-ups are some of the best ways to push along a character's growth, a quantum leap where they go from zero to hero in a hurry.

Row, Row, Fight the Power The exhibit first opened with a room showcasing Gurren Lagann , whose first episode premiered over 17 years ago on April 1, 2007. That age was apparent with the original key animation, not duplicates or reproductions, on display at the exhibition, complete with crumpled corners, coffee stains and even some stray line art that would usually be fixed up.

The 2000s big three ruled shonen anime, but fans shouldn't overlook other gems from the era's diverse genres. Code Geass and Gintama prove that anime masterpieces beyond the big three exist and offer unique storytelling. From darker dramas like Monster to zany adventures like Gurren Lagann, the 2000s produced diverse and memorable anime.
It's no secret that in the 2000s, the shonen "big three" dominated the anime scene. Eiichiro Oda's One Piece went first, with the anime launching late in 1999 and continuing to pick up steam in the 2000s alongside the source manga. Then Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto got an anime in 2001, and finally, Tite Kubo's Bleach launched its anime in 2004. From then to now, those three series have defined shonen anime, but that's no reason to ignore the industry's many other offerings.

Are you folks all enjoying the most delightfully strange show of the season? In case you haven’t heard, Train to the End of the World has been offering a weekly slice of absurdity in a world gone mad, with its heroines traveling from one wildly jumbled town to the next in the wake of the 7G-prompted quasi-apocalypse. It’s got a charming cast, an absolute bounty of ridiculous ideas, and a snappiness of execution that somehow binds all these variables together. It’s the kind of show that feels like it would be almost impossible to get right, and if so, only through lucky chance — that is, so long as you’re not familiar with its brilliant director. Tsutomu Mizushima is far from the flashiest director working in modern anime. His work doesn’t tend to possess clear visual signatures, a consistency of aesthetic and tone that makes it...

Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno's studio, Khara, has released an official statement regarding Gainax filing for bankruptcy. The statement provides some extra context to the recent news, including Khara's perspective on previously-ignored but deep-rooted Gainax issues.
Following Gainax's bankruptcy, Khara released its statement on June 7 documenting the events from its own perspective. Anno had shared several concerns about Gainax's debt and poor management that were ignored for years, with Khara even propping up the studio with loans. The statement goes on to read, "However, Gainax's situation did not change, and the situation continued to worsen, culminating in the arrest of the then-presidential director in 2019 on a criminal offense unrelated to the operation of the company."

My Adventures with Superman has long been inspired by anime, and the same applies to Kara Zor-El's new outfit.
A promo for season 2's fifth episode teased a first look at the Girl of Steel's debut, nearly picking a fight with an incoming truck until Jimmy Olsen pulls her out of the way. Her attire, meanwhile, consists of a white shirt and black vest with a Kryptonian insignia, bearing a striking resemblance to the clothes traditionally worn by Dragon Ball Z's Android 18. Additionally, the promo plays up Kara's "fish out of water" attitude for comedic effect, misinterpreting Jimmy's Flamebird moniker and role at the Daily Planet as a sign that he's the leader of Earth.

Gainax, the iconic but latterly tarnished, Japanese animation producer behind anime series “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” has filed for bankruptcy. It had been in operation for nearly 40 years.
The company made the announcement on Friday, via its own website, and said that it had filed its petition with the courts on May 29. The problem of the heavy debt burden that it had been carrying for several years had been made worse by the tangles of mismanagement.
The news emerged at a moment when the Japanese government, sensing growing international interest in Japanese pop culture, has pledged to help manga (comic) and anime (animated series and films) exporters. It also comes just a day before the beginning of the world’s biggest annual animation festival, the Annecy International Animated Film Festival (June 9-15).

Anime studio Gainax announced on its official website on June 7 that the business officially filed for bankruptcy with the Tokyo District Court on May 29, with the court accepting the application. Gainax is best known as the studio that produced Neon Genesis Evangelion , Flcl , Gunbuster , Gurren Lagann and many more classic anime. The statement, penned by representative director Yasuhiro Kamimura, apologized to creditors, those who were working with Gainax to help alleviate the situation prior to the bankruptcy and fans. Kamimura wrote, “We had no choice but to choose bankruptcy because we were unable to fully achieve our goals.” Kamimura states that since 2012 Gainax’s “financial situation worsened" in relation to managing a restaurant, starting a CG company and sizeable unsecured loans to then-executives, all of which caused debt to accrue. This even led to situations where Gainax was removed from production committees they were a part of. The studio also...

Look Back Director Says Film Completed Day Before Premiere - Main Image
There have been many reports about crunch working conditions in anime productions over the years. The latest is Look Back, as its director recently revealed that he only completed the film the day before its premiere.
While this movie is only set to be released in Japanese cinemas on June 28, it had an early premiere recently ahead of the Annecy International Animation Festival.
It’s not clear if this meant that the film was shown in an unfinished state, but what can be said for certain is that its director spent many sleepless nights working on it.

Kingdom of Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball and Studio Trigger co-founder Hiroyuki Imaishi have playfully mused on the idea of a collaborative Planet of the Apes anime series at Disney.
Imaishi and Ball sat for an interview with Japanese outlet The River earlier this month. Ball noted similarities between Gurren Lagann's Simon and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' Noah, before then commenting on the difficulty of trimming content for a film. "But with an anime series," he said, "you can take your time and draw things. A movie is two hours long, so even if you try to cram everything in, it's not that easy. I'd love to try a series." In a recent interview with Febri, renowned anime director Hiroyuki Imaishi talked about why he believes it would be impossible to recreate an anime like Kill La Kill today.
Reflecting on a recent screening event where he revisited past episodes, Imaishi revealed that he was struck by the realization that recreating the magic of Kill La Kill would be nearly impossible today.
Imaishi explained that this feeling wasn’t new and surfaced with every project he undertook, but it was especially pronounced in this instance. He emphasized that Kill La Kill was a product of its time, achievable only under the specific conditions and creative environment that existed back then.
Moreover, the production of Kill La Kill didn’t involve much of a planning (even if it was more than what was done during the making of his earlier work Gurren Lagann) and Studio Trigger didn’t have the resources...

Since 2007, the "Transformers" movies have been A) Primarily set on Earth (excepting prologues in "Dark of the Moon" and "Bumblebee" showing the war for planet Cybertron) and B) Live-action, using CGI to integrate the Autobots and Decepticons into real settings. Director Josh Cooley ("Toy Story 4") is about to change that with "Transformers One." /Film's Ryan Scott, who attended the Paramount Pictures panel at CinemaCon 2024, got an early look at the upcoming animated movie.
"Transformers One" is a prequel set before the war when the Autobots and Decepticons were still one people. Since the movie is set entirely on Cybertron with only robot characters, it makes sense to tell the story through animation. "Transformers" is no stranger to prequels -- check out the comic series "The War Within," High Moon Studios' video game duology "War for Cybertron" and "Fall of Cybertron," and more. Still, this is new territory for the films.

The Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann films are just as good 15 years after their initial release. Childhood's End beautifully upscales the art and animation and closes out with a wonderfully original climax. The Lights in the Sky Are Stars improves the story by cutting out most of the weaker elements and making the finale an amazing spectacle even better than the original.

Character deaths in anime can set the tone for the story and force growth and sacrifice. Unexpected hero deaths have a greater impact and elevate the story to new heights, as it happens to Jonathan in the finale of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood, or to Kamina in episode #8 of Gurren Lagann.
