Was Margot Robbie Actually Friendzoned By Her Husband?
Image
Margot Robbie was in the friend zone with her husband (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Before Margot Robbie locked down her real-life Ken, Margot had to play it cool while crushing hard on Tom Ackerley. Spoiler: she made her move, and the rest is a love story for the ages.

Flashback to 2013: Margot’s career was skyrocketing. She’d nailed her role in The Wolf of Wall Street (remember that flawless Brooklyn accent?) and was officially Hollywood’s next big thing. But behind the scenes, she was falling for Ackerley, an assistant director she met while filming Suite Française. The catch? They were just friends—and roommates, no less.

“I was always in love with him,” Margot admitted. “But I thought, ‘He’d never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot.’” So, she stayed in her lane, playing it chill while secretly swooning. Talk about a plot twist waiting to happen.

Image
Margot Robbie Dated Her Housemate Tom Ackerley ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Margot Robbie’s life? Total whirlwind. From landing epic roles to launching her own production company and even snagging an Oscar nom, it’s been a crazy ride. But forget the Hollywood glitz for a second because one of her most memorable (and pretty dramatic) moments happened before that. Plot twist: she fell for her housemate. Yup, Margot, I, Tonya queen and Wolf of Wall Street star, was secretly dating Tom Ackerley before anyone knew they were more than just “mates.” Talk about keeping things low-key!

This whole thing started in 2013 when Margot was filming Suite Française and hanging with the crew. They were vibing so hard that someone threw out the idea of living together. Next thing Margot knew, she was signing a lease for a place in Clapham, barely even seeing it before dashing off to the Golden Globes.

Margot Robbie & LuckyChap’s Entertainment Empire: How They’re Thriving Off ‘Barbie,’ ‘Saltburn’ Shocks and ‘Being Original Every Time’
Image
When pitching Warner Bros. and Mattel on their offbeat, feminist reimagining of “Barbie,” producer and star Margot Robbie and writer-director Greta Gerwig predicted that their film would make a billion dollars at the box office. They, of course, were right — and then some. But one thing about the movie’s improbable journey to cultural ubiquity and its $1.4 billion global haul has taken Robbie completely by surprise. “We didn’t say this is going to make it to the Oscars,” Robbie says, referring to the film’s awards season momentum.

Sitting on a sunny rooftop patio of her Los Angeles production company, LuckyChap, flanked by co-founders Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, Robbie says, “When we finished the press tour, I was like, ‘I guess I’ll throw all the pink out of my wardrobe now.’” They all laugh. “But the fact that we’re going to the Golden Globes and all that stuff?...

Westworld (2016)
This June on HBO and HBO Max will play host to a new season of “Westworld,” a new adaptation of “Father of the Bride” and much more.

The big new Warner Bros. release on HBO and HBO Max this month is “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” which actually debuted on the HBO Max streaming service on May 30. The third film in the Wizarding World prequel franchise first hit theaters in April, and is now available to stream in 4K.

There’s also the updated version of “Father of the Bride” premiering on June 16, while a pair of noteworthy documentaries are coming on the early side this month: “The Janes” premieres June 8 and follows unlikely outlaws in pre-Roe v. HBO Max New Releases: June 2022
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.

Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.

Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

Margot Robbie Lists Hancock Park Pad for $3.475M

Having upgraded a couple of years ago to a gated, multi-structure compound in trendy Venice Beach, Los Angeles, it’s not too much of a surprise that publicity eschewing two-time Oscar-nominated Australian actor Margot Robbie, one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses, and English filmmaker Tom Ackerley have put their former home in L.A.’s hoity-toity Hancock Park neighborhood on the market at almost $3.5 million.

UK producers have emphasised their commitment to European co-production on the eve of the European Film Awards (EFAs), in which UK films are conspicuous by their absence.

Two non-uk actors in UK-European productions are the sole representatives in the Efa nominations: Viggo Mortensen for Falling and Natasha Berezhnaya for Dau. Natasha.

“From a filmmaker’s point of view, we mostly are very pro-European,” said Andrea Cornwell, the producer of Rose Glass’s Saint Maud. This week the low-budget horror film received a record 17 Bifa nominations...

The Party movie review: bring your own battle
MaryAnn’s quick take… Sally Potter’s brutally snappy take on the classic British drawing-room comedy hauls it into the 21st century with a cutting takedown of the anxieties and hypocrisies of well-off left-wingers. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast; desperate for stories about women

Politician Janet (Kristin Scott Thomas: Darkest Hour, Suite Française) is hosting a small gathering of close friends to celebrate her new job: shadow health minister (sort of like a minority leadership position in American legislatures). It doesn’t go well, to say the least.

The Exception review – ridiculous, raunchy story of the Kaiser in exile
Lily James, Eddie Marsan and a bewhiskered Christopher Plummer star in the tale of Kaiser Wilhelm in Holland, 1940 – when the Nazis come to dinner

This resembles the crazed love child of ’Allo ’Allo! and Suite Française; it’s actually adapted from the 2003 novel The Kaiser’s Last Kiss by Alan Judd. We are in occupied Holland in 1940, where the abdicated German Kaiser is now living – played with much bewhiskered grumpiness by Christopher Plummer. Janet McTeer plays the prickly empress. With the Nazis now in charge, a decent Wehrmacht officer is put in charge of the Kaiser’s security, and this is Captain Stefan Brandt, played by Jai Courtney, who soon cops a couple of super-raunchy love scenes with the Kaiser’s comely Dutch maidservant Mieke, in which role Lily James talks about “sherving the Kaissher” in a Steve McClaren Dutch accent.

It all comes to a head when Heinrich Himmler (Eddie Marsan) comes to dinner,...

Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown (2016)
‘The Crown,’ ‘Feud,’ and ‘Victoria’ Battle for Best Score Emmys — Listen
Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown (2016)
Ascending queens Elizabeth (“The Crown”) and Victoria (“Victoria”) face off in the Emmy race for Series Original Dramatic Score, while old Hollywood (“Feud: Bette and Joan”) counters Russian classicism (“Fargo”) for Limited Series, Movie, or Special Dramatic Score.

Meanwhile, political (“House of Cards,” Taboo”) and survival overtones (“Planet Earth II” and “A Series of Unfortunate Events”) clash in the Series category, as well as war (“Five Came Back,” “The White Helmets,” “Suite Française”) and culture (“O.J.: Made in America”) in the other category.

Not surprisingly, the odds are with Rupert Gregson-Williams (“The Crown”) and last year’s “Mr. Robot” winner, Mac Quayle (“Feud”), for their respective retro scores. While Williams reached for orchestral nobility, Quayle went for more orchestral glam.

“The Crown” — “Hyde Park Corner” (Rupert Gregson-Williams)

The score for showrunner Peter Morgan’s drama about the rise of Elizabeth II (nominated Claire Foy) was all about restraint, given her sense of calm.

New to Streaming: ‘I Am Not Your Negro,’ ‘Three,’ ‘War on Everyone,’ and More
With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.

Beauty and the Beast (Bill Condon)

The near-ubiquitous familiarity with the majority of Disney animations make the financial proposition of a live-action remake a no-brainer greenlight. In aiming to appeal to those experiencing these stories for the first time, the generation prior, and the generation that brought that generation to the theater, it can also be as creatively risk-averse as one might imagine. As these cultural touchstones get dusted...

Michelle Williams in Talks to Replace Rooney Mara in Leos Carax’s ‘Annette’
Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver in Annette (2021)
Michelle Williams may soon be joining French filmmaker Leos Carax’s upcoming English-language drama “Annette,” taking a role that had originally gone to Rooney Mara before the actress dropped out. Williams’ deal is still being negotiated, despite reports to the contrary, so it’s too early to say whether she and Carax will get to collaborate for the first time, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation. Adam Driver will star in the lead role.

Nicole Kidman in Grace de Monaco (2014)
Weinstein Company Sends Michelle Williams Drama to Lifetime
Nicole Kidman in Grace de Monaco (2014)
Lifetime’s roster of actors is gaining major prestige, all thanks to the Weinstein Company. Two years after dumping Nicole Kidman’s Oscar hopeful “Grace of Monaco” off at the TV network — following terrible reviews after the opening night film of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival — the Weinstein Company has granted the same fate to “Suite Française,” a wartime romance starring Michelle Williams. Also Read: The Weinstein Company Checks Into 'Suite Francaise' With Michelle Williams Like “Grace of Monaco,” the film will bypass a theatrical release in the U.S. altogether, in favor of a premiere on Lifetime. ‘Suite Française’: The Real Reason Why the Weinstein Company’s WWII Drama Ended Up at Lifetime
Kristin Scott Thomas, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Michelle Williams in Suite française (2014)
Remember that wartime romance from The Weinstein Company, starring Michelle Williams and Matthias Schoenaerts? Probably not; TWC took U.S. and other rights to Saul Dibb’s World War II drama, “Suite Française,” four years ago at the Cannes Film Festival.

And now, two years after its release in the U.K., it will premiere stateside on Lifetime May 22 — much as another TWC busted theatrical, “Grace of Monaco,” which opened the Cannes Film Festival out of competition in 2014.

Set in Nazi-occupied France, “Suite Française” follows a French villager (Williams) who strikes up a romance with a German soldier (Matthias Schoenaerts) while waiting for news of her husband with her domineering mother-in-law (Kristen Scott Thomas). Dibb co-wrote and directed the film, which is based on the best-selling book by Irene Nemirovsky. Bob and Harvey Weinstein both served as executive producers.

Free Fire movie review: guns a-boring
MaryAnn’s quick take… A 90-minute shootout that never makes us care who lives and who dies. In attempting to send up a cinematic cliché, this only becomes a tedious example of same. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast

I’m “biast” (con): increasingly not a fan of Ben Wheatley

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Eight people walk into an abandoned warehouse in Boston in 1978. There’s Chris (Cillian Murphy: Anthropoid, In the Heart of the Sea), whom we can presume is Ira because he has an Irish accent and he’s there to buy enough guns to supply a small army. There’s Justine (Brie Larson: Kong: Skull Island, Room), who has brokered the deal with Ord (Armie Hammer: The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Entourage)… or is it Ord who has brokered the deal with seller Vernon (Sharlto Copley: Chappie,...

[Venice Review] Planetarium
It’d be one thing, a simpler thing, if Rebecca Zlotowski‘s Planetarium was a middle-of-the-road effort that’s over and done with in less than two hours. Alas, it stars at a place of such promise, such intrigue, even such wonder, and, after some point, steadily progresses from unique investigation of faith and duty to middlebrow European co-production — a rather enervating thing, then, that left me thinking “no more movies like this, ever” while a sizable portion of its runtime was still left. There isn’t a precise image of the type of movie to which I’m referring, but I can at least say it goes something like this: an English-speaking (often American) star in a well-dressed, amply lit European nation, surrounded by foreign actors who rarely (if ever) speak their native tongue. I’d come right out and say it’s best embodied by, say, Suite Française,...

Where Are the Women?: crunching the numbers
• only 22% of 2015’s movies had female protagonists

• best and worst representations of women on film in 2015 (and the average Watw score for the year)

• critics are slightly more likely to rate a film highly if it represents women well

• mainstream moviegoers are not turned off by films with female protagonists

• movies that represent women well are just as likely to be profitable as movies that don’t, and are less risky as business propositions

The Where Are the Women? project was designed to drill deep down into the films of 2015 in order to determine how well — or how poorly — they represented women. The project has now come to its end, and you can examine the final ranking here. The ranking includes 270 films released in the Us, Canada, and the UK, in both limited and wide release (including every wide-release North American film and most of the UK wide-release films). The...

All caught up with our top 50 films of 2015? It’s now time to look to the new year, and, ahead of our 100 most-anticipated films, we’re highlighting 50 titles we’ve enjoyed on the festival circuit this last year (and beyond) that will likely see a release in 2016. While the first batch have confirmed dates all the way through the summer, we’ve also included a handful that are awaiting a date and some we’re hopeful will get a release by year’s end pending acquisition. U.S. distributors: take note!

We’ve stuck to just 50 here, but we’ve also seen many other notable releases over the next twelve months that we were more mixed on (or worse). There’s The Benefactor, Mojave, Southbound, Remember, and Too Late this winter, as well as Hello, My Name is Doris, Green Room, Miles Ahead, I Saw the Light, The Bronze, Evolution,...

Michelle Williams (x2) Heading to Sundance
Manuel here. Michelle Williams has been surprisingly absent from our screens since she played Glinda in Oz the Great and the Powerful (2013). Though if you were abroad you apparently got to see her alongside Kristin Scott-Thomas in something called Suite Française? (No, it never opened in the Us). That looks to change this year. The actress has two projects that will be unveiled at Sundance next month.

First up we'll see her reunite with Wendy and Lucy director Kelly Reichardt in Certain Women. Adapted from Maile Meloy’s short stories, the film will make its debut at Sundance and follows three intersecting stories of women in Montana. It co-stars Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart, James Le Gros, Jared Harris, and Lily Gladstone.

She also has a role in Kenneth Lonergan's follow-up to Margaret, Manchester by the Sea. The fillm follows Lee (Casey Affleck) as he returns to his Boston suburb hometown after a family death,...

'Harley Quinn' In "Vogue"
Take another look @ Australian actress Margot Robbie aka 'Harley Quinn' ("Suicide Squad"), in a recent issue of "Vogue" (Australia) magazine:

She then appeared as 'Donna Freedman' in the TV series "Neighbours" as a guest then as a regular cast member.

She then played in the ABC drama series "Pan Am" as flight attendant character 'Laura Cameron'. Robbie was then cast in Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" as the character 'Naomi Lapaglia'.

Robbie recently joined the cast of director Matthew Michael Carnahan's "Violent Talent". She will also appear in "Suite française", an adaptation of author Irène Némirovsky's novel.

[Camerimage Review] Suite Française
There are other things to do with my day, but I must write this review of Suite Française before the film completely vanishes from my mind. Although this France-set, World War II-era romance is not without pleasures both fleeting and consistent there’s little indication that this story requires a telling, or at least a telling by people with such didactic inclinations. “Watching Michelle Williams and Matthias Schoenaerts romance one another” is a better reason than most others to make a film, so this one would (naturally) have been a lot stronger if that was the central intention.

For whatever it’s worth, this is a work in which well-dressed people walk around well-dressed rooms, and the visual pleasure of that does not go unnoticed. Nor does the early, elegant establishment of stakes: Suite Française starts off free non-battle conflict, introducing us to Lucille (Williams) and Madame Angellier (Kristin Scott Thomas...
