The Doctor and Bill have saved the day again and something’s knocking in the vault - but it’s only knocking three times, so it doesn’t constitute a reference. Instead, here’s our weekly list of references, callbacks, tenuous spots and generally interesting waffle from this week’s episode. You’ll have to forgive me if I’ve missed anything - I’m at my sister’s wedding as this episode goes out, and they’ve refused to turn the music off for an hour so we can watch it.

Looking back at The Baker Street Boys
Feature Alex Westthorp 19 Feb 2014 - 07:00

Nostalgia ahoy! With Sherlock Holmes more popular than ever, Alex looks back at eighties children's drama, The Baker Street Boys...

The BBC's contemporary take on Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories has made Sherlock the most popular television drama series in many years. Benedict Cumberbatch has made Sherlock his own, his approach to the role as radical for the current era as the late, great Jeremy Brett's was a generation ago. Tony Lee, writer of the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies graphic novel adaptation and the Markosia graphic novel Harker – a sequel to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is hitting the literary trail again. Lee has teamed up with artist Dan Boultwood on a brand new Sherlock Holmes related series titled The Baker Street Irregulars.

Based on the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the series is set:

…in the wake of Sherlock Holmes supposed waterfall death, the young cohorts rise up and take over his role on the streets of London as a crime wave hits, alongside Inspector Lestrade, Doctor Watson and Irene Alder against someone who may well be Professor Moriarty, the man who killed Holmes.

Lee and Boultwood are working with Holmes expert Leslie S. Klinger to make this as true to Sherlock Holmes canon as can be, so much so that publishers Franklin Watts Books, an imprint of Hachette,...
