Mitchell Lafortune wrote the screenplay for Kandahar, and Ric Roman Waugh was tapped to direct the film. Lafortune’s only other writing credit in his career has come from Last Breath,...

Dwayne Johnson's Intense 2013 Crime Thriller Is A Major Hit On Tubi
Image
The Rock is going through a bit of a weird time in his career. Ever since 2022's "Black Adam" underperformed and he pretended it didn't, the good will he'd accrued throughout several decades has been dissipating. The former WWE star, who recently returned to his wrestling roots, has seemed to flounder, and reports of disgusting on-set habits haven't helped in that regard. But "Red One," his Christmas movie for Amazon, seemed to do well and his aforementioned pro-wrestling return might go some way to restoring the public's faith in a man who at one time seemed to be one of the most-liked figures in Hollywood.

Long before any of this played out, however, and even before he became the massive movie star he eventually did, The Rock was starring in some middling action thrillers in his quest to conquer Hollywood. In recent years, we've seen some of these neglected entries in his filmography resurface,...

Jason Statham’s New Action Thriller From 'Angel Has Fallen' Director Gets Filming Update
Image
Action icon Jason Statham continues to fly the flag for crowd-pleasing action movie fare, with the actor and martial artist now joining forces with the perfect director for another tale of a man with a mysterious past who is forced to fight for justice. The action thriller project does not yet have a title, but is now shooting in Enniskerry, Ireland, and will see The Stath working under the direction of Ric Roman Waugh, who is best known for helming the Gerard Butler-led Angel Has Fallen and Greenland.

Enniskerry hosted the Disney sequel Disenchanted back in 2022, but rather than the music and whimsy of that fantastical comedy, Jason Statham will instead tear through the picturesque village as a man who, after saving a girl from drowning, finds himself the target of a local gang. Enniskerry will stand-in for Scotland in the movie, with a shot of Statham posing with...

'Snitch' Starring Dwayne Johnson is a Streaming Hit on Tubi
Image
For a film that you would be hard-pressed to find on a list of Dwayne Johnson’s best movies, Snitch is one of those movies that just keeps coming back time and time again on free streaming platforms. This time, the 2013 movie has resurfaced on Tubi and has been holding strong mid-top 10 for the best part of a week.

Snitch centers on John Matthews (Johnson), a father whose teenage son lands in prison after unwittingly accepting a package filled with illegal substances. The tough sentencing guidelines mean a hefty prison sentence, but Matthews offers to infiltrate a dangerous cartel on behalf of the DEA, all in hopes of reducing his son’s sentence. Unlike Johnson’s usual roles that are all about brutal showdowns and brute strength, this time he relies more on his emotions and has to play a role that relies on more than his muscles.

Surprisingly, the...

Jason Statham’s Mutiny has a been given a release date from Lionsgate
Image
Jason Statham’s upcoming film Mutiny has now been given a release date, according to Deadline. Lionsgate has given the new action thriller an opening on January 9, 2026. That weekend is currently not sporting competition from any other films, but it will be following up the opening week of Universal’s M3GAN spin-off Soulm8te, which could be its only formidable challenge at the box office after the popularity of the original M3GAN.

Lionsgate, MadRiver, and Punch Palace are teaming up to release the film in theaters. Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis wrote the screenplay for Mutiny, with principal photography beginning last September in the UK. Statham produces through his newly-founded Punch Palace Productions, with Marc Butan via his MadRiver Pictures studio.

HBO's Harry Potter Remake Can Fix A Misconception The Movies Created For No Good Reason
Image
There's a common misconception surrounding James Potter's character created by the Harry Potter movies, but HBO's upcoming remake can set the record straight. Since James died before the events of Harry Potter, details regarding his character were revealed slowly over time. Harry had to learn about his father from people who knew him, and this only began to happen once he started school at Hogwarts. However, one of the first things Harry discovered about James in the Harry Potter movies was actually incorrect and has led to a misconception that has now lasted decades.

The fact that Harry was a lot like James in Harry Potter was a key part of the story. At first, the Boy Who Lived took great pride in being told how similar he was to his father. They had the same messy black hair and similar glasses, and those who saw Harry's face knew...

Dwayne Johnson's $428M Video Game Adaptation Coming To New Streaming Home Later This Month
Image
A Dwayne Johnsonaction movie that grossed $428 million is getting a new streaming home. Decades after making his WWE debut, Johnson is now one of the most recognizable movie stars on the planet. Following his jump to acting, Johnson appeared in a number of action movies, like The Rundown (2003), Faster (2010), Fast Five (2011), Snitch (2013), and Pain & Gain (2013). More recently, Johnson has embraced more family-friendly fare, but that doesn't mean he's left his action roots behind.

The mid and late 2010s saw the release of a handful of classic Johnson action movies, but the budgets got larger and they became action blockbusters instead of genre movies in the mid-budget space, reflecting the actor's growing star power. In addition to several Fast & Furious movies, Johnson starred in San Andreas in 2015 before going on to have a big year in 2018, starring in two buzzy titles. One of these titles was Skyscraper, which was ultimately a disappointment,...

Dwayne Johnson Gets Transformed Into A Realistic Version Of Moana's CGI Maui In Deeply Upsetting Art Video
Image
Dwayne Johnson remains one of the most recognizable actors working in Hollywood today, and is widely known for starring in and producing family-friendly fare. Getting his start as a wrestler in the WWE, Johnson's first major movie role was as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns (2001), a role he used to springboard into other films like The Scorpion King (2002), The Rundown (2003), and Walking Tall (2004).

Johnson continued his tough-guy acting persona throughout the late 2000s and into the 2010s, appearing in movies like Faster (2010), Snitch (2013), and San Andreas (2015), as well as several Fast & Furious movies. Though he continues to play more serious characters occasionally, the recent years of Johnson's career have seen him taking on a number of lighter and more comedic roles, particularly in four-quadrant movies for the whole family. When it comes to beloved family fare, there's perhaps no greater Johnson movie than his 2016 animated adventure.

After Dwayne Johnson made his screen acting debut as The Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns, Johnson returned to this role in his feature-film starring debut, the 2002 spin-off The Scorpion King, for which he was paid $5.5 million, a record-breaking salary for a first-time leading man. The success of The Scorpion King led to starring roles in the action films Doom, The Rundown, and Walking Tall, and while Johnson’s starring vehicles throughout the 2000s had varying levels of success, the actor established himself as a durable action star who was destined for superstardom.

Why The Rock Was Recast With Chris Hemsworth in Extraction
Image
Extraction is an action thriller, an original Netflix movie starring Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake. The film is based on Ciudad, a graphic novel by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman. Extraction was so successful that Netflix announced a sequel in 2021. In 2023, Extraction 2 landed on the streaming service. Extraction 3 is in production right now.

It might be hard to imagine these incredible action films with anyone other than Chris Hemsworth at the forefront, but Chris was not the original choice for Tyler Rake. Instead, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson would star as the former Australian Sasr operator. Despite being relatively new, the film was stuck in production limbo for many years. Talks of Extraction first surfaced in 2012 and many things changed from 2012 to 2020, including the lead.

Why Chris Hemsworth Replaced Dwayne Johnson In Extraction
Image
Have you heard of "the butterfly effect?" No, not the 2004 Ashton Kutcher vehicle, but the principle associated with figures as various as meteorologist Edward Norton Lorenz and sci-fi author Ray Bradbury, all about how the slightest change in conditions can result in widespread changes over a period of time. History is full of such examples, where instead of obvious life changing events there exist small moments (or a series of moments) that change the futures of multiple people. As with most things regarding history, these cruxes can only be identified in hindsight, and sometimes they turn out to be surprisingly unlikely.

For example: who would've ever thought that the 2020 Netflix action film "Extraction" would have been such a turning point for the careers of the Russo brothers, Dwayne Johnson, and its star, Chris Hemsworth? For starters, "Extraction" itself was originally going to be a very different film: when first put together,...

7 Movies From Dwayne Johnson That Don’t Suck
Image
There are few actors with as many ups and downs as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The actor, wrestler, and lifestyle guru earned his celebrity through hard work. However, Dwayne Johnson’s track record has been spotty. One moment, he reached a new career high, especially during his “Franchise Viagra” era. However, the next moment, he misses with a big budget franchise tentpole film.

A common complaint against Johnson has been his insistence to appear in movies where he plays himself. Unfortunately, his 2024 ends with Red One and Moana 2, which seem to fall in that camp. With the bad reviews of Red One dominating most of the coverage, we want to focus on his better movies. Below are five of his best.

Benny Safdie knew Dwayne Johnson could play Mark Kerr when he met with him for The Smashing Machine
Image
Dwayne Johnson, despite being a super famous brand nowadays, has tried his hand at different kinds of roles in the past, even as he was being pegged as the next Arnold Schwarzenegger. While there are no shortage of “safe bets” where he got to play a role he was at home with, his resume will still included films like Southland Tales, Be Cool and Snitch, where his size was a factor, but he wasn’t an all-out badass. Johnson would even dabble in family movies. He will next be featured in Red One, which comes from his Jumanji director Jake Kasdan and puts an action twist on the holiday.

Recently, GQ profiled Johnson and spoke with him, Benny Safdie and Emily Blunt on his upcoming dramatic turn in The Smashing Machine. The story of Mark Kerr deals with an athlete who faced depression, and Safdie mentions that he knew Johnson...

Shot Caller is the Best Prison Movie You Never Saw!
Image
The Story: After causing a deadly accident while driving drunk, a family man (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is sent to a maximum security penitentiary. There, he’s recruited by the Aryan Brotherhood, and coerced into acts of violence that threaten to erase any trace of the man he once was.

The Players: Starring: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Omari Hardwick, Lake Bell, Jon Bernthal, Emory Cohen & Jeffrey Donovan. Written and directed by Ric Roman Waugh.

The History: Shot Caller was released with very little fanfare last summer. A low-key VOD release from Saban, which nonetheless received some pretty good reviews when it played the festival circuit, it forms a loose trilogy for director Ric Roman Waugh, following his earlier Felon and Snitch. Originally a Relativity production, that company’s bankruptcy sent the finished film into a tailspin, hence the limited release. Given how VOD numbers are rarely revealed, it’s impossible to know how the film did financially,...

One Of Dwayne Johnson's Earliest Action Movies Surges On Netflix Chart 21 Years Later
Image
Dwayne Johnson's The Rundown has become a surprise hit on Netflix 21 years later. Released in 2003, director Peter Berg's The Rundown marks one of Johnson's first major movie roles. The film sees the former WWE wrestler starring as Beck, a bounty hunter who teams up with the son of a powerful loan shark to seek out a legendary lost treasure in the Amazon. The movie, which also stars Seann William Scott, Rosario Dawson, and Christopher Walken, was a notable box office failure.

Now, new data from Netflix reveals that The Rundown was the eighth most popular movie on the service in the U.S. for the week of September 2 8. While exact viewership data isn't provided, the Johnson movie beats 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and Trolls Band Together (2023). The Rundown falls short of other titles like Shark Tale (2004), The Union (2024), Migration (2023), Aloha (2015), Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), The Deliverance (2024), and, in the number one spot,...

Now, it can be earned by players willing to grind.

Although Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions lacks microtransactions, it still features a season pass with rewards to be earned. This is a fairly stock standard season pass model, with players earning Xp by finishing matches and completing daily and weekly challenges. However, there's no premium track or premium rewards, so PS1 Hagrid can be unlocked by anyone who owns the game.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions - How To Catch The Golden Snitch
Image
Catching the Golden Snitch is less important in Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, particularly when compared to the books and movies. In other media, catching the Golden Snitch in a Quidditch match ended the match and awarded the team that caught it with a massive 150 points. The Snitch is less impressive in-game but can still provide a substantial score boost when caught.

As the smallest and fastest ball in Quidditch, the Snitch remains difficult to catch. However, longtime fans of the Wizarding World should note two major changes made to the Snitch. Catching the Snitch no longer ends the game and only grants 30 points instead of 150. However, 30 points can still mean the difference between victory and defeat.

Quidditch Champions Makes One Essential Change To Golden Snitch Rules
Image
Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions is finally adapting the beloved titular sport for a modern audience, the first Quidditch-focused game since Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup on the Gamecube. Players around the world will be able to take to the skies on their brooms as Beaters, Keepers, Seekers, and Chasers. However, while the rules of Quidditch have been kept mostly intact for Quidditch Champions, there have been a few alterations.

Quidditch Champions released on September 3, 2024 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

Perhaps the biggest change in Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions is a tweak to how the Golden Snitch works. While players will still be able to zoom about on their brooms as their favorite wizards and witches from the Harry Potter universe or as their own customized character, they may be surprised to find it isn't quite how they remember it from the books and films.

Pictured: Hulk, The Mummy, The Karate Kid, Kung-Fu Panda

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.

First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.

We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Harry Potter: Everyone's Favorite Part Of Quidditch Is Actually The Worst
Image
The Golden Snitch is worth too many points in Quidditch, and it can quickly undo a team's hard-earned lead and potentially lead to a loss. Prior to the Snitch, Quidditch led to the extinction of the Golden Snidget bird, as demand for the bird increased with the popularity of the sport. The focus on the Snitch in Quidditch scenes in the Harry Potter movies makes the game seem more one-dimensional and less exciting than it could have been.

Quidditch is one of the most interesting aspects of the Harry Potter universe, and there are differing opinions on the best and worst parts of the fictional sport. However, there is one aspect in particular that detracts from the game's excitement. With most team sports in the real world, the action is confined to the field. The fact that most of the action in Quidditch consists of high-octane broom flight and avoiding violent,...

‘Suits’ Sets Streaming Chart Record for Most Weeks at No. 1
Image
The summer of Suits continued past Labor Day, as the legal drama set a streaming chart record for most weeks as the No. 1 overall title.

The former USA series, which streams on Netflix and Peacock, spent its 12th consecutive week at the top of Nielsen’s rankings, which go back three years. It had 2.36 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Sept. 4-10, falling by only 4 percent from the previous week. Suits‘ 12th week at No. 1 overall broke a tie with Netflix’s Ozark, which had 11 weeks at No. 1 over several seasons.

Five titles had more than a billion minutes of viewing for the week, with Netflix’s Virgin River (1.92 billion minutes of watch time) coming in second behind Suits. One Piece (1.39 billion minutes), the streaming debut of The Little Mermaid (1.37 billion) and Swat (1.04 billion) — which jumped 62 percent week to week — also crossed that threshold.

In the original series...

Snitch True Story: What Really Happened & What The Rock's Movie Changes
Image
The movie Snitch was inspired by the real experiences of DEA agent James Settembrino but changed many events for a more thrilling story. James Settembrino's son Joey was actually set up by a friend and did not get released from prison in real life. The true story did not involve drug kingpins or gangs, and James Settembrino did not go into witness protection or have an accomplice like the character Daniel in the movie.

The Rock's 2013 film Snitch was inspired by a true story, but the two stories are far from similar, with the movie changing quite a few events from what really happened. Dwayne Johnson plays John Matthews, a father desperately trying to keep his son Jason out of prison. With the threat of a ten-year minimum prison sentence, John meets an attorney who agrees to reduce Jason's sentence in exchange for him informing on a drug dealer. This...

Google Play VOD Chart Goes Awol — and Exactly How Is ‘Woody Woodpecker’ a Netflix Original?
Image
Tomorrow, “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) will make its home-viewing debut at $24.99 for rental, $29.99 for digital download, and will presumably sweep all #1 positions for weeks to come. The extent may depend on the as-yet undated PVOD arrivals of “Oppenheimer,” “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning: Part One,” and “Sound of Freedom.”

For now, our usual chart lineup is down one list: Google Play mysteriously has the same films in the same order for more than a week. In that universe, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is still #1 while “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” has yet to chart.

“Strays” Courtesy Universal Pictures

Other #1 slots reflect the ways iTunes and Vudu calculate their lists. “No Hard Feelings” (Sony), which had an early rental price reduction to $5.99 after success at $19.99, is #1 on iTunes, which calculates by transactions. Just-released R-rated comedy “Strays” (Universal) leads at Vudu, which ranks by revenue.

“No Hard Feelings” is in sixth place at Vudu,...

Forgotten Dwayne Johnson Action Thriller Becomes an Unexpected Hit on Netflix
Image
Dwayne Johnson's movies may not be performing well at the box office, but they are dominating Netflix's Top 10, including a forgotten action thriller from 2013. Red Notice, featuring Johnson alongside Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, is currently the most watched original movie on Netflix. Johnson's film Snitch from 2013 has entered the Global Top 10 of English-language movies on Netflix, showcasing his continued popularity on the streaming platform.

Dwayne Johnson may have left behind his title as the king of the box office in recent years, but he's still dominating Netflix's Top 10 thanks to a seemly forgotten action thriller from 2013, Snitch, which was not so well received when it debuted in cinemas a decade ago.

Despite some heavily criticized projects, The Rock has become one of the biggest names within Hollywood, especially when it comes to huge blockbusters. However, in the last couple of years, many of his movies have not...

Where Was Snitch Filmed? The Thriller's Filming Locations Explained
Image
The filming of Snitch took place in the southern United States, where the diverse locations were used effectively to enhance the storytelling. The cast includes Dwayne Johnson, Rafi Gavron, Barry Pepper, Benjamin Bratt, Harold Perrineau, Susan Sarandon, and Jon Bernthal. Filming primarily occurred in the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Area of Louisiana, with a few scenes shot in Texas. The budget constraints seemingly influenced the choice of locations.

The entirety of filming for Snitch took place in the southern United States, where the cast and crew took advantage of the versatility of the region's locations to tell the story. The 2013 action thriller movie starred Dwayne Johnson as John Matthews, a construction company owner whose estranged son, Jason Collins, played by Rafi Gavron, got in trouble with the Drug Enforcement Agency when he was framed by his friend. ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ Is the Unanimous #1 on VOD Charts
Image
Four (an unusually high number) recent studio theatrical releases added PVOD home availability over the last week. No question which among them scored best — “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (Disney) took the #1 slot on all charts.

Consumer options vary among the titles. “Indiana Jones” can immediately be digitally downloaded for $19.99. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” (Paramount) is $19.99 for a 48 hour rental, as is “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” (Universal). “Mutant” can be purchased for $24.99. Meanwhile, Disney released “The Boogeyman” at a $14.99 initial rental price.

The rush to open could be related to two factors — holiday viewing, but also the anticipated (but not yet confirmed) release of “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) as early as Tuesday. Presales are available on multiple sites, but none yet list a specific date.

Oddly, only “Indiana Jones” among the four new entries made all three charts. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” was released Friday,...
