The Wizard of Oz is available on many different platforms online. The 1939 fantasy musical is adapted from the L. Frank Baum children's novel of the same name, starring Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Billie Burke, and Margaret Hamilton. It was both a commercial and critical success, grossing $29.7 million against its $2.8 million budget and going on to win two Oscars, for Best Score and Best Original Song (for the iconic tune "Over the Rainbow"), in addition to three other nominations, including Best Picture.
The success of The Wizard of Oz has led to the creation of many sequels, prequels, remakes, and follow-ups in the nearly 90 years since its premiere. This includes 2024's Wicked, which is an adaptation of the stage musical adapting the prequel novel by Gregory Maguire, as well as the 1978 musical adaptation The Wiz, the 1985 sequel Return to Oz, the 2013 Sam Raimi prequel Oz the Great and Powerful,...

Kenya Barris is working on a new, modern version of "The Wizard of Oz" for Warner Bros. According to an Aug. 15 Deadline report, Barris isn't sharing anything else about the film, except that it's an updated version of the musical. Warner Bros. didn't immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment.
Barris, who created "Black-ish," continues to be one of the busiest people in Hollywood. He's executive producer of the upcoming Netflix series "Entergalactic," an animated show starring Kid Cudi, Jessica Williams, and Timothée Chalamet. He's also directing his first movie, "You People," for Netflix, to be released sometime later this year. Barris also serves as a writer on the upcoming "White Men Can't Jump" remake starring Jack Harlow and Sinqua Walls.
Of course, "The Wizard of Oz" has received a myriad of adaptations since the first book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," was published in 1900. Perhaps the most famous one...

Well, it's finally August, and while the summer movie season isn't completely over it might as well be. This article was a difficult one to put together, because there just isn't much to recommend this month. But you know what, that's okay, I think I managed to pull together five solid titles for the "must-see" section, and lucky for us the fall festival season is just around the corner, which means things are about to heat up exponentially on the prestige movie front just in time to compensate for things cooling down outside as the seasons change. (I should note here, it is currently 106 degrees fahrenheit here in the desert, and the thought of things cooling down is marvelous, but also very premature.) We are coming off what turned out to be a pretty solid month last month, in my opinion, as I settled back into my routine after a...

Cameron Diaz was also honoured at the ceremony, receiving the award for Worst Actress for both her roles in The Other Woman and Sex Tape.

Well, this could mean trouble for Cell as it was announced this morning Clarius Entertainment has acquired domestic distribution rights to the film based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. So far Clarius has had an awful track record at the box office with the releases of And So It Goes, Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return and most recently the Nicole Kidman starrer Before I Go To Sleep, the three of which combine for a grand total of only $26.8 million at the domestic box office. The budget of the Oz feature alone was $70 million while the other two haven't even been reported. Perhaps, however, this will be a turn for the better as the film, directed by Tod "Kip" Williams (Paranormal Activity 2), stars John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan) and Stacy Keach centers on a powerful signal broadcast across mobile networks worldwide, resulting in...

<< Continued from "'Sniper' to Easily Fight Off Weak Competition This Weekend"Opening at 2,648 locations, Mortdecai will likely be Johnny Depp's latest misfire at the domestic box office. He stars as the title character, a "debonair art dealer and part time rogue" who goes on a mission to recover a stolen painting.Marketing has positioned the movie as a broad slapstick comedy, and there's been a heavy emphasis placed on Mortdecai's silly-looking mustache. That includes a series of posters that feature each of the main stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Olivia Munn, wearing a similar mustache. While this quirky choice has helped differentiate the movie, it seems too slight to really translate in to ticket sales. In general, this is a pretty odd project. It's adapted from a series of novels by British author Kyril Bonfiglioli, which were originally published in the 1970s; while they surely have some fans,...

The Interview has been performing well in its limited theatrical and online VOD release, taking in more than $15 million from online sales and rentals. The comedy has already expanded to cable VOD, Playstation, Vudu and more theaters nationwide. Despite its early success, The Interview has not been received well by at least one organization, The Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. The Razzies, which has released its "short list" of nominees. The Interview is listed in several categories including Worst Picture, Worst On-Screen Combo (James Franco and Seth Rogen) and Worst Actor (both James Franco and Seth Rogen). Voting for the Razzie Awards ends on January 10, with the nominations to be announced January 14, one day before The Academy Awards nominations are announced.

Most Hollywood studios have gotten smart about their film budgets, lowering them quite a bit over the past year. Which means we saw fewer box office bombs in 2014. Almost all of the big releases made at least a little bit of their money back, except maybe Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return. It only earned $18.6 million worldwide against it's $70 million budget. Winter's Tale and Vampire Academy were also big money losers over the past twelve months, but seeming disasters like Transcendence and I, Frankenstein actually managed to recoup their costs overseas. That doesn't mean these were good movies by any means. And some of the biggest blockbusters of the year shouldn't be considered masterpieces of cinema by any stretch of the imagination. In 2014, we couldn't really judge a movie by its earnings. But we could judge them by their critical and fan responses. Which is where Rotten Tomatoes comes in handy.

Netflix streaming is upping the ante this December, adding enough high-profile TV shows and movies to more than make up for last month's lackluster offerings.
On the movie side, highlights include Will Ferrell and gang in "Anchorman 2," the Heath Ledger-starring "A Knight's Tale," Cameron Crowe classic "Almost Famous," Oscar-winning "American Beauty," and horror hits "Oculus" and "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones." Oh, and let's not forget '80s classic "Troop Beverly Hills," '90s cult favorite "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion," or Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Wolf of Wall Street."
And there's plenty to love about what's coming on the TV front: "American Horror Story: Coven" finally gets its day on Netflix, "Sharknado 2" storms its way to streaming, and Brit hit "Broadchurch" finally lands stateside. Oh, and December sees the premiere of the hotly anticipated Netflix Original series "Marco Polo" on the 12th.

There are still six movies I need to add to the database, but today the Academy announced 20 movies that will compete for up to at least five nominations for Best Animated Feature at the 2015 Oscars. I've been tracking these for some time now and currently have Big Hero 6 at the top of the charts, but I'm beginning to think this may be The Lego Movie's award to lose. It's a difficult category to predict right now considering my personal opinion of those two top contenders and having not yet seen the likes of Studio Ghibli's The Tale of the Princess Kaguya or Song of the Sea, both of which could be top contenders, or Laika's The Boxtrolls, which has done modest business at the box office, hoping to crack $100 million worldwide by next weekend. Anyway, here's the complete list and I'll get the six I don't have in...

With weekend actuals reporting, Ouija narrowly held on to first place ahead of Nightcrawler over Halloween weekend. Meanwhile, Before I Go To Sleep and the Saw 10th anniversary re-release each bombed. The Top 12 earned just shy of $80 million, which makes this one of the slowest weekends of the year. That can partly be attributed to the "Halloween effect": moviegoers were preoccupied with other activities on Friday, which set the weekend back quite a bit. This is a chicken-and-egg sort of thing, though: fearing this Halloween effect, the big studios avoided the date entirely. Had someone stepped up to the plate with a broadly appealing offering, the aggregate box office wouldn't be nearly as low.Sunday estimates had Nightcrawler and Ouija tied with $10.9 million. Open Road Films had Nightcrawler earning $9,000 more than Ouija, though other sources suggested Ouija came out on top. When actuals reported on Monday actuals, Ouija had...

<< Continued from "Weekend Forecast""If it's Halloween, it must be Saw." Lionsgate is banking that moviegoers will remember that old adage this weekend, when the 2004 horror classic is re-released in to over 2,000 theaters. The original Saw opened to a surprising $18.3 million on this weekend 10 years ago, and spawned a franchise that ruled the next four Halloweens. The first sequel (Saw II) was the highest-grossing installment with $87 million; grosses progressively declined to Saw V, which earned $56.7 million. All good things must eventually end, though, and Saw VI got stomped by word-of-mouth sensation Paranormal Activity in October 2009. The movie dropped around 50 percent from the previous installment, which led to a franchise-low $27.7 million gross. The following year, Saw 3D recovered to $45.7 million, though that was thanks to the addition of 3D pricing (during 3D's peak) and a "final chapter" bump.Re-releases have been a hit-or-miss endeavor lately. 3D re-releases for The Lion King,...

All That Jazz (Criterion Collection) I've only seen Bob Fosse's All That Jazz once and I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it a lot for its excellent photography, but I'm not sure I feel any need to purchase it. I didn't even ask for a review copy, but I will say were it to come on television I'm pretty sure it would be an easy movie to sink back into. One thing I will add, however, is Roy Scheider crushes this performance; a stand out, dripping with intensity performance that's certainly worth seeing. This new Criterion release comes loaded to the gills, here are the features: New 4K digital restoration, with 3.0 surround DTS-hd Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray Audio commentary featuring editor Alan Heim Selected-scene audio commentary by actor Roy Scheider New interviews with Heim and Fosse biographer Sam Wasson New conversation between actors Ann Reinking and Erzsebet Foldi...

"Belle"
What's It About? This 18th century English romance is about Dido Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a biracial woman raised by her aristocratic great uncle and aunt, Lord and Lady Mansfield. She grows up alongside her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) as equals and best friends, but as they come of age, their differences become all too apparent -- to each other and to their would-be suitors. Meanwhile, Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) is facing a trial as Lord Chief Justice of England that could change the future of slavery. Will Dido find love on her own terms?
Why We're In: It's an elegant period piece perfect for Jane Austen fans, and it's a subtle but effective examination of the intersection of class and race in 18th century England. Mbatha-Raw is fantastic, and director Amma Asante has an excellent eye for detail.

Scarlett Johansson easily out-muscled Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on the final weekend of a very weak month at the box office. In another big win for Universal Pictures, Lucy took first place with over $43.9 million. Meanwhile, Hercules had to settle for runner-up with a lukewarm $29.8 million debut.Overall, the Top 12 earned $136.8 million this weekend; that's down 13 percent from the same frame last year.Lucy's opening weekend didn't quite match similar movies like Wanted ($50.9 million) or Taken 2 ($49.5 million). The fact that it even came close, though, is a fairly remarkable feat for this moderately-budgeted original action movie. Among other similar titles, it crushed The Bourne Legacy ($38.1 million) and Salt ($36 million). It's also the fourth Universal Pictures release to open north of $35 million this year; the other three are Lone Survivor, Ride Along and Neighbors. This is even more impressive considering all four titles are "original" (i.e. not sequels,...

The $33 million tracking for Luc Besson's Lucy seemed crazy. It was a rated-r movie with Scarlett Johansson in the lead role, a position she isn't typically known for. Add to that, Besson's largest opening for one of his films was $17 million back in 1997 with The Fifth Element and I'm not sure I saw any press for the film, after all, Johansson is busy with Avengers: Age of Ultron and if I'm not mistaken, it was only Morgan Freeman huffing helium with Jimmy Fallon when it comes to the film's late night press. And yet, it's number one at the box office in a big way. With $44 million, Lucy is your number one film at the box office this weekend. Budgeted at $40 million the film will likely do well internationally, though I think we should expect a 60-65% drop next weekend, if not more, thanks to the "C+" CinemaScore and...

Thanks to two major comic book sequels and a highly-anticipated monster movie, May box office wound up over $1 billion for the fourth year in a row. Without any of those movies truly breaking out, though, overall business was at its lowest level since 2010.Those three movies*The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past*all opened over $90 million. That's only the second time that's ever happened: the first was in May 2007, when three titles debuted north of $110 million.Unfortunately, all three of the May 2014 blockbusters dropped off at least 60 percent in their second weekends: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Godzilla are going to struggle to reach $200 million, while X-Men: Days of Future Past will fall short of its franchise record. With over four weeks of theatrical engagements, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 led the box office in May with $191.6 million. The movie opened to $91.6 million on the first weekend of the month,...

With the month almost in the books, it's time for Rolling Stone movie critic Peter Travers to bring out his handy scum bucket, tossing in the "10 scummiest movies of the merry month of May." It's an especially gross list this time around, so our critic brought along a special guest – monster-movie legend Godzilla – to help digest the waste.

As he did with the first X-Men movies, Singer proves he can handle the serio-comic tone, the lavish effects and the sprawling cast expertly, though he gives himself a lot to do here. The two generations of X-Men actors are united in a time-travel plot that sends Wolverine back to the 1970s and possibly fans back to their X-Men back issues. It's complicated, but fun.

Tim here. By now, you've undoubtedly all heard the biggest news of the summer movie season so far: there’s a conspiracy by Big Hollywood to bury the little cartoon indie that could, Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return.
“Legends of which, now?” I can already hear some of you asking.
Exactly the point! As producer-fundraiser Greg Centineo so sagely put it:
We’re nobodies in this industry. And we stepped into a deep, deep ocean with some very, very big sharks. Some of those mainstream critics have not just trashed the movie, but literally tried to crush it… You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out something is wrong there.”
Damn straight!
It's a well-established fact that critics and audiences tend to agree about 100% of everything, and the movies with the best reviews always make the most money. Surely only a shadowy cabal of self-sabotaging distributors and...

This weekend at the box office was kind of a no brainer. With Gareth Edwards' highly anticipated Godzilla reboot finally hitting theaters (with many postive reviews behind it), many assumed it would have a large opening. Even so, it blew past all predictions (nearly topping The Winter Soldier's opening) and landed a massive lead over every other film this weekend. Come inside to check out the full breakdown!
Over the last couple weeks, many analysts were reporting that Godzilla was heading towards a $68-76 million weekend, which in itself would have been very good. So it's really awesome to see that it made $93 million instead, blowing past all predictions and nearly topping the charts for 2014 so far. With the positive buzz behind the film, it's likely to keep going strong (though X-Men will take a chunk out of it). Neighbors dropped to number 2, with Amazing Spider-Man 2 still trailing...

Lea Michele is setting the record straight! The "Glee" star stopped by "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Friday, where she explained what's really happening on set between her and Naya Rivera. "It's really unbelievable the amount of things that can just be completely made up," the 26-year-old actress told the late night host. "And it's really frustrating," she added in reference to rumors that Rivera may be getting fired over a feud with Michele. The "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return" star went on to say "the way people like to pit women against each other … is really annoying and it's sad." To her credit, Michele laughed the whole thing off and told Letterman that if there were ever a catfight on set, it wouldn’t be a secret. “You’d know, because I’d get a ring and I’d put Jell-o in it and I would make it,...

Universal got a little bullish with their $51 million estimate for Neighbors as the box office actuals have rolled in and the R-rated comedy finished with $49 million, but we're still looking at a tremendous result for the $18 million-budgeted feature. Of course, when it comes to reader predictions that's a big slide that pretty much changes those point standings. Same goes for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which came in $1.5 million less than it was estimated, finishing its second weekend with $35.5 million, down a whopping 61.2% from its opening weekend, which is sure to draw even more scrutiny for the second installment in what Sony hopes will be a massive Spidey universe. Luckily for them, blockbuster cinema is now global and the $250 million film (plus $180 million for marketing) is just shy of $550 million worldwide. As for the weekend's two other new wide releases, Moms' Night Out limped in with $4.3 million and Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return finished with $1.7 million.

This weekend's box office winners and losers defied expectations in extreme ways; with its estimated $51.1 million debut, the R-rated comedy "Neighbors" knocked "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" off its perch and earned $10 to $15 million more than anyone predicted, while the animated musical "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return" barely managed an eighth-place debut with an estimated $3.7 million, about a half to a third of what many pundits predicted. But both movies have something in common: they're examples of the importance of booking the right number of theaters.
"Neighbors" had a lot going for it: it was well-marketed, it follows the trend of raunchy comedies doing well in the summer, it had weak competition, and even critics liked it. Still, Universal was wise to book it on 3,279 screens and no more. "Spider-Man 2" is playing on nearly 1,000 more screens, but it was due for a big fall (almost 60 percent) in its second week,...

After debuting to $92 million in its first weekend, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" already lost the top spot at the domestic box office by grossing only $37 million. In total, the superhero film earned $148 million domestically, but thanks to foreign ticket sales, it grossed $550 million worldwide so far. Unfortunately, the sequel still has a lousy 54% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes. The first place went to "Neighbors," a new comedy starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. The film earned an impressive $51.1 million domestically, the fourth highest opening of all time for an R-rated comedy, behind "The Hangover II" ($85.9 million), "Sex and the City" ($57 million) and "Ted" ($54.5 million). The movie also performed well overseas, grossing an additional $34.4 million for a worldwide debut of $85.5 million. "Neighbors" cost only $18 million to make, which means that it's already a huge success. The new movie, which is Rogen's best opening for a live-action film, has a 74% fresh rating. Meanwhile,...

Amir here, with the weekend's box office report. Three new films were released, all of which surprised with their numbers but in different directions. Neighbors, the Seth Rogen/Zac Efron comedy beat The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to first place, and while that isn't surprising in and of itself, the fact that it raked in $51m certainly is. I quite like Seth Rogen, at least compared to other dudebro-y comedians of the moment, and Rose Byrne is a treasure, but I couldn't find the enthusiasm to drive to their neighbourhood just yet. Maybe when the film is out DVD...

Seth Rogen and Zac Efron hosted a party at the movies this weekend, and audiences showed up in droves for it.Playing at 3,279 locations, Neighbors opened to an incredible $49 million. That's one of the biggest debuts ever for an original R-rated comedy.Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 fell hard in its second outing. Still, the superhero sequel is making up for its domestic shortcomings with strong overseas earnings.Among original R-rated comedies, Neighbors trailed Ted ($54.4 million) and Sex and the City ($57 million, and debatably "original"). At the same time, it was ahead of major R-rated hits like The Hangover, The Heat and 21 Jump Street. It's also the biggest debut ever for a live-action Seth Rogen movie ahead of The Green Hornet ($33.5 million). From its first preview, Neighbors looked like a hit. The comedy had a relatable, clearly-articulated premise ("Family vs. Frat") that was hammered home in all of the marketing material.

The first surprise hit of the summer arrived this weekend as the R-rated comedy "Neighbors" partied hard for a monster $51 million opening. Actually, anyone who had seen the Nick Stoller directed flick since its debut at the SXSW Film Festival in March could have told you it would be a hit, but a $50 million plus opening? That had to be a dream scenario for distributor Universal Pictures. Instead, Seth Rogen and Zac Efron can now credit the flick for their biggest live action openings ever. And for Efron, in particular, "Neighbors" success proves he really does have longterm leading man potential. Universal's gain was Sony Pictures's loss as last week's champ, "Amazing Spider-Man 2," fell and it fell it hard. The second installment in the Spidey "reboot" dropped 59.4% (it could be 60% by the time Monday's actuals come in) and earned an estimated $37.2 million for $147.9 million to date. With "Godzilla" and...

I'm sure brand new distributor Clarius Entertainment is hoping for a better result with And So It Goes than they saw with this weekend's animated turd Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return, which will forever enjoy suffering one of the worst all-time openings ever. Luckily for And So It Goes it has a little juice when it comes to its cast in that it stars Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton and is directed by Rob Reiner. Then again, this isn't the mid-90s and since Reiner directed A Few Good Men and The American President he hasn't exactly been hitting home runs let alone singles or doubles. He did find a little success with The Bucket List, which seems to be what this film will be trading off of (not to mention As Good as It Gets in title and tone) as it centers on a self-centered realtor (Douglas) who enlists...

I'm not sure what a "B" CinemaScore means when it comes to an R-rated comedy. Considering it didn't show any signs of slowing after a whopping $19.6 million, I'd say it doesn't mean much as Neighbors rocked the box office with $51 million, more than $11 million over its tracking, not to mention another $34.4 million coming in from overseas. For comparison, in 2012 Ted opened with $54.4 million in June and went on to make over $218 million domestically. I don't see those kinds of legs for this one as Neighbors is a little more of a straight-forward comedy, but given the $18 million production budget this is a very impressive result. Perhaps the CinemaScore will show its effect next weekend. One thing going for it is it was driven by a 53% female audience, pretty good for a movie targeting men and perhaps that helps explain that CinemaScore a little more. When it comes to The Amazing Spider-Man 2...

Seth Rogen and Zac Efron have bested the web-slinger at the box office.

Well, there is no doubt Neighbors will be taking the #1 spot this weekend after an estimated $19.6 million Friday, crushing The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which fell 72% compared to last Friday, taking in an estimated $10.1 million. That's off 71 percent from last Friday, which is identical to Spider-Man 3's drop at the same point. The superhero sequel could wind up as low as $34 million this weekend.Despite facing tough competition from Neighbors, Cameron Diaz comedy The Other Woman only dropped 41 percent on Friday. The movie added $2.82 million for a new total of $55.3 million.Heaven is for Real took fourth place with $1.65 million,...
