Muneyuki Kii Launches K2 Pictures With Hirokazu Kore-eda & Takashi Miike Projects, Plans Japan Film Fund
Image
Former Toei producer Muneyuki Kim has launched K2 Pictures, which will work with major directors such as Hirokazu Kore-eda and aim to create a new funding ecosystem for Japanese animated and live-action features.

The plan is to return profits that would traditionally go to film companies to investors and creators, which its founder says closely follows approaches used in Hollywood and elsewhere. Creators who team with K2 will be able to participate on projects as shareholders.

Kii, who will be K2’s CEO, says most Japanese films are produced through a system of ‘production committees’ with industry know-how formed through film companies, TV networks and publishers, which it believes makes entry into the market difficult and limits returns to producers and creators.

To this end, company has launched the K2P Film Fund I, which will provide support for animated and live-action features and enable to “investors, creators and crew...

Evangelion Director Hideaki Anno May Not be Making Another Neon Genesis Movie Despite Delivering a Box Office Banger
Image
In the Japanese animated movie industry, the Evangelion series is considered one of the pioneers. The most latest movie in the collection was Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time and it was a sure hit. It is the fourth and last movie in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise’s Rebuild of Evangelion film series, which is produced by Studio Khara.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

The film’s plot centers on Shinji Ikari, who is still lost and without hope after losing his will to life, but discovers what it means to have hope in a new location. In the end, Wille takes one more, difficult stance to stop the Final Impact, and the Instrumentality Project is launched. It was launched on March 8, 2021, and garnered positive feedback from both fans and critics.

Hideaki Anno co-directed, wrote, and produced the movie and it was probably the biggest film in the franchise.

10 Promising Anime Arcs That Were Cut Short & Didn't Live Up To Their Full Potential
Image
The unfortunate reality about anime is that even the best character arcs aren't safe from being cut. Due to the realities of anime production, demanding release schedules, and adapting a manga to anime, the animators, directors, and writers have no choice but to omit promising storylines just to meet deadlines or tell a story they believe in.

At best, a promising arc that was abruptly cut doesn't ruin the entire anime. All it does is remind audiences of a missed opportunity that denied a decent anime of the chance to be great. At worst, the arc's sudden end essentially takes out one of the story's core pillars, and its absence all but dooms the story to a horrible reception and legacy.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Megumi Hayashibara, Kotono Mitsuishi, Yûko Miyamura, Megumi Ogata, Fumihiko Tachiki, and Yuriko Yamaguchi in Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995)
The original anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion was ground breaking. It pushed boundaries in terms of animation and storytelling. It originally aired in 1995/6 with an additional two episode Complementary ending in 1997. In the 2000s the Rebuild Of Evangelion was envisioned. The writer-director Hideaki Anno wanted to remake the original 26 episodes in four films. The idea was to have the first three films retell most of the original story with the final film being a radical departure from the original narrative. The first of these films, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, was released in 2007. The second, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, from 2009, was a massive departure from the original plot. A third, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, followed in 2012, and after a nine year wait the 2021 conclusion Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time.

The Most Tragic Neon Genesis Evangelion Deaths, Ranked
Image
Neon Genesis Evangelion was more of an unforgettable experience than a typical anime. To fans, the anime was either a deconstruction of mecha fiction, or a critique of escapism. More than anything, Evangelion was an introspection about the human condition and how relationships could shape or break another person.

Evangelion denied its cast and audiences the easy catharsis that anime and genre fiction often guaranteed. Instead, it made them endure hardships first. This theme was most noticeable in Evangelion's many deaths. Tragically, it was only in their last moments that these characters could be honest with others and themselves.

Updated October 2, 2023 by Angelo Delos Trinos: Now that Neon Genesis Evangelion officially closed with the Rebuild of Evangelion movies, there's no better time than now to look back on its many distressing deaths. As dark and bleak as Evangelion already was, its high casualty rate only made things worse for invested viewers.

Bleach: Tybw Goes Behind the Scenes of Rukia's 'Ice Queen' Bankai Singer

Shirō Sagisu, the Japanese composer for Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, released a behind-the-scenes video of the performer behind Rukia's Bankai scene.

While One Piece fans are currently buzzing over Monkey D. Luffy's Gear 5 transformation, the new Bleach was having a monumental moment of its own. In Episode 19 of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, Rukia Kuchiki unleashed her Bankai known as the Hakka no Togame, translated as Censure of the White Haze by Viz Media. This occurred in the manga between Chapters 569 - 570 in 2014, meaning Bleach fans have been waiting nearly a decade to see it in animation. On social media, Sagisu shared a video of musical artist Ian Michael G. Pitter performing the song used for Rukia's Bankai scene.

Hideaki Anno
Shin Kamen Rider - Jennie Kermode - 18498
Hideaki Anno
What’s most important to you in a superhero film – flawless special effects or having a good time? Hideaki Anno’s spirited take on the hit 1970s Japanese TV series (and later manga) Kamen Rider may look rough in places but the director knows exactly what he’s doing, and provided that you’re willing to roll with it, you’re bound to enjoy the ride.

The film belongs to the same universe as Shin Ultraman, which preceded it as a Fantasia selection, plus Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time and fan favourite Shin Godzilla. Anno has been creatively involved in all four, co-directing the latter with Shinji Higuchi. There are no plans for a fifth instalment, though it seems likely that all these characters will return to the big screen sooner or later. Compared to its stablemates, Shin Kamen Rider has a distinctly low budget look about it, but it has benefited.

10 Dark Anime Twists (That Went Nowhere)
Image
Anime with a dark plot twist are more common than even the most dedicated fans may realize. Although it's easy to shake the characters and viewers to their cores with a harrowing revelation, following up on it satisfyingly is another matter. Unfortunately, these anime failed to capitalize on their darkest and most interesting ideas.

Related: 10 Anime Heroes No One Likes

In a vacuum, these anime's dark twists were inspired or even legitimately terrifying. But thanks to factors such as a limited episode count or questionable narrative choices, these dark twists ended up becoming aimless teasers. The worst thing about these twists wasn't how disturbing they were, but how their potential was wasted.

Gianni Amelio’s Homophobia-Themed Drama ‘Lord of the Ants’ Reaches Top Italian Box Office Spot After Venice Bow
Image
Gianni Amelio’s “Lord of the Ants,” a biopic of Italian poet and playwright Aldo Braibanti, who was jailed in 1968 due to a Fascist-era anti-gay law, has reached the top spot at Italy’s box office following its launch from the Venice Film Festival.

“Ants” on Monday reached the numero uno position at the local box office roster with a €483,474 intake from more than 300 screens following its September 8 release. While far from stellar in normal times, this result is being hailed as an encouraging sign for the country’s still sagging post-pandemic theatrical sector.

Amelio’s film is now ahead of Japanese anime pic “Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo,” which was released as an event on Monday for a three day run, and “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” which is at the end of its run, following it’s Aug. 18 Italian outing.

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (2012)
How Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01 Thrice Upon a Time Perfectly Ends The Franchise
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (2012)
This article contains spoilers for Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time.

Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01 Thrice Upon a Time had a lot to wrap up. Not just the story of the Rebuild of Evangelion films, a story that had been left on a cliffhanger since 2012, but the Evangelion franchise as a whole, which began in 1995. This is the swansong, for Evangelion, the final story for the foreseeable future in creator Hideaki Anno’s ideal version of the series. (Anno stated in an interview with The New York Times that he might return to the franchise at some point but that it won’t be any time soon.) This puts an immense weight of responsibility on Thrice Upon a Time, especially since the first three Rebuild films had massive problems.

While gorgeous to look at and listen to with its powerful score, the plot of the Rebuild films began to crack once 2.0 came around.

Latest ‘Evangelion’ Anime Passes $30 Million in First Week at Japan Box Office
Image
“Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time,” the fourth film in the Rebuild of Evangelion sci-fi anime series created and co-directed by Anno Hideaki, has earned $30.6 million from 2.2 million admissions in its first week on release, according to distributor figures released on Monday.

Bowing on March 8 on 466 screens, the film has grabbed 45% more at the box office than the third “Rebuild of Evangelion” film, “Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo,” which had a opened in 2012 and finished with $48.6 million.

Also, its first-day take of $7.6 million on 540,000 admissions beat the previous film’s by 24%, despite opening on a Monday instead of the Japanese industry standard Saturday.

But impressive as these numbers are, they do not match up to those of last year’s mega-hit anime, “Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train.” Opening on 403 screens on Oct. 16., 2020, it scored a first-day gross of $12 million and went to top $100 million within ten days. As...

Donnie Yen in Ip Man (2008)
The Rise of Asian Cinema
Donnie Yen in Ip Man (2008)
Asian cinema has been long mostly watched by true connoisseurs in the west – people who are never too shy to appreciate a good movie and take it on their own merits. And so, Asian cinema has been gaining a lot of traction. There have been quite a few hits throughout the years, including Ip Man, and most recently Parasite. But just like roulette, some movies have made it and others have flopped. Roulette77.us teaches us that understanding a game of roulette is not in fact that convoluted. Nevertheless, Asian movie makers have decided not to rely on luck for the success of their future productions.

As a result, you will get a whole lot of great productions today. In fact, 2019 was definitely one of the strongest years for Asian cinema and 2020 – with its own set of challenges – promises to be no less exciting. Be that as it may, good...

The Next Long-Awaited Evangelion Movie Coming in 2020
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 has been in development for years, but it finally has been given a release year. The movie is slated to hit theaters in Japan in 2020 and I imagine we will see it get a U.S. release at some point after it's Japan release. There's also some beautiful artwork that was released that was shared on Twitter.

Apparently, the release date was announced during movie previews starting today, including the previews before Mamoru Hosoda’s new feature Mirai of the Future.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 is said to be the fourth final entry in the Rebuild of Evangelion series. The last film that was released was Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo and that was back in 2012.

This latest chapter of the story was supposed to be released sooner, but Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno ended up putting it on hold for a bit to develop his live-action Shin Godzilla movie.
