The Slashin’ of the Christ: Ice Nine Kills, Paul Soter, and Greg Nicotero team for horror project
Image
What better day than Good Friday could there be to announce a horror project with a title that spoofs the title of Mel Gibson’s 2004 film The Passion of the Christ, which is all about the event that’s commemorated on Good Friday: the crucifixion of Jesus Christ? There could be no better day. At least, that’s what the people behind the upcoming horror project The Slashin’ of the Christ clearly decided.

An official website for the project launched today at SlashinoftheChrist.com, and at that link you’ll see an image that lets us know this project, which we assume to be a horror comedy film, is coming to us “from the people who brought you The Walking Dead, Final Destination, and Super Troopers.” Specifically, those people are producers Greg Nicotero (who you may also know as an incredibly talented special effects artist) – who’s an executive producer...

‘Mufasa’ Claws Back At ‘Sonic’ Thursday, ‘Lion King’ Prequel Eyes $58M 5-Day; Focus Features & Searchlight Having Renaissance – Box Office Update
Image
Refresh for more…Mufasa continued to get from the count on Thursday, beating Sonic The Hedgehog 3, $12M to $11.55M. The 3-day and 5-days on these two family movies are expected to be close. Mufasa is currently looking to be the stronger at $58M. Running total through yesterday on Mufasa is $76.4M while Sonic 3 stands at $99.55M.

But enough about those filthy animals, the real story over the holiday are the classic labels, Focus Features and Searchlight which are both seeing record openings. Post Covid, Focus Features rose from the ashes this weekend to remind the town how hip they can make movies, the win here being Robert Eggers’ gothic vampire movie Nosferatu which is eyeing a $21.4M 3-day and $40.6M 5-day after $7.6M yesterday, the pic’s second day of release. At five days, that’s the biggest Focus Features opening ever, besting the Friday-Tuesday take of 2019’s Downton Abbey which did $38.4M.

Super Troopers 3 Survives Potential Disney Purge, Could Actually Happen Very Soon
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

At long last, it seems like Broken Lizard is getting the gang back together for another round of cop-related shenanigans. That's right! After much discussion in recent years, it seems that "Super Troopers 3" is coming together. While a formal announcement hasn't been made, writer/director Jay Chandrasekhar has revealed that the project is in active discussions at Disney and appears to be close to getting approval. In short, unless something derails it, it's happening.

During a recent appearance on the "Holmberg's Morning Sickness" radio show, Chandrasekhar revealed that, despite Disney's $71.3 billion purchase of Fox in 2019, "Super Troopers 3" is still very much alive. It was previously revealed during San Diego Comic-Con in 2018 that the sequel will be titled "Winter Soldiers," and whether or not that's still the case remains to be seen. But Chandrasekhar did provide a promising update on the...

Why The Super Troopers Biker Scene Is Even Funnier Than You Think
Image
The famous Super Troopers biker scene was a hilarious accident caused by a wardrobe mistake. Foster and Ursula's miscommunication about their disguises as "bikers" leads to a funny moment in the restaurant. The accidental scene captures the slapdash, have-fun-with-it attitude of the state trooper characters.

The famous Super Troopers biker scene has a backstory that makes the sequence even funnier in retrospect. The Broken Lizard comedy group consisting of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske co-wrote Super Troopers with Chandrasekhar directing. The film follows a Vermont state troopers' patrol filled with officers who would rather pull pranks and mess around than do their jobs. Super Troopers is a beloved cult classic movie from the Broken Lizard crew, and fans were surprised with a sequel, Super Troopers 2, in 2018, and a third Super Troopers movie in development.

Super Troopers is a highly quotable, wacky, and fresh production that,...

Brian Cox Will Return For Super Troopers 3 On One Condition (& A Lynda Carter Pitch)
Image
With the prankster police officers having returned five years ago, Brian Cox shares his thoughts on a potential Super Troopers 3 return. Created by the comedy troupe Broken Lizard, the Super Troopers movies revolve around a mischievous group of Vermont Highway Patrol officers as they frequently find their jobs in jeopardy thanks to their comedic antics. With two movies spread across 17 years, the franchise has garnered mixed critical reviews, but modest box office returns and large cult followings.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for the family drama Prisoner's Daughter, Brian Cox was asked about the chances of a Super Troopers 3 return. Though not sharing whether he's been approached just yet, the star did express his interest in coming back for a trilogy capper on the one condition of avoiding any night shoots, as well as pitching a new scene between him and Lynda Carter. See what Cox shared below:

“We Have To Finish The Trilogy”: Super Troopers 3 Gets Exciting Update From Creators
Image
Though audiences waited over 15 years for the first sequel, a new Super Troopers 3 update could see the next movie coming even sooner. The comedy franchise first launched with 2001's Super Troopers revolving around a group of pranskter Vermont state troopers who tried to solve a murder in order to save their station from being shut down. A modest box office hit, the film became a cult classic on home media, leading to crowdsourcing helping Super Troopers 2 getting off the ground in 2015 and hitting theaters in 2018.

While speaking with ComicBook.com to discuss their latest comedic venture, the Hulu-released Quasi, comedy troupe Broken Lizard offered an exciting Super Troopers 3 update. The creators and stars confirmed that they are heavily invested in the development of the third installment, being deep in the writing of the next movie and teasing filming could even begin later this year. With the 4/20 Arrival of ‘Quasi,’ Broken Lizard’s Jay Chandrasekhar on What Makes a Stoner Comedy
Image
Broken Lizard, the five-man comedy troupe which formed in 1990 at a fraternity on the upstate New York campus of preppy Colgate University, have been stoner icons since the very first scene of their 2001 breakout hit “Super Troopers.” That’s when Jay Chandrasekhar’s mustachioed Vermont cop Lieutenant Arcot “Thorny” Ramathorn pulls over a car full of potheads and proceeds to terrorize and freak them out.

Like they did in 2018 with “Super Troopers 2,” their newest film, “Quasi,” a reimagining of Victor Hugo’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame,” is a no-holds-barred, scatological combination of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” crossed with Mel Brooks’ “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.” It premieres today — April 20 — as a Hulu Original through Fox Searchlight.

Boasting their own cannabis brand, Smokin’ Lizard, Chandrasekhar notes, “When we get high with friends like Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg, they take it seriously enough to try to smoke us...

Quasi Creators Broken Lizard On Their New Period Comedy And Unmade Projects [Exclusive Interview]
Image
Twenty-five years ago, before they made their seminal cop comedy "Super Troopers," comedy troupe Broken Lizard were tossing around ideas based on a character who was a lovable loser who managed to become a hero. Fast-forward to today, and those ideas have solidified in the form of "Quasi," a satirical take on "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" that traps hunchback Quasimodo (Steve Lemme) in a battle between the King of France (Jay Chandrasekhar) and the Pope (Paul Soter). If you ever wanted to see the guys behind "Beerfest" and "Club Dread" tackle medieval history with their unique brand of sweet stoner humor, then "Quasi" is the flick for you, and it's hitting Hulu on April 20, 2023, just in time for the holiest of pot-smoking holidays.

I had the chance to chat with Broken Lizard and ask them all about this cinematic adventure 25 years in the making. They shared the highs and lows of playing multiple roles,...

Quasi Trailer: Super Troopers Team's Hunchback Of Notre Dame Movie
Image
The Hunchback of Notre Dame gets an R-rated twist in the official trailer for Quasi, the latest film from the comedy group, Broken Lizard. Since releasing their first full-length production back in 1996, members Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske have created and starred in many projects, including Super Troopers and its 2018 sequel. Quasi was announced in 2021, with Heffernan attached as director, and will follow its titular character as he becomes involved in "a murderous feud" between the King of France and the Pope.

Hulu recently dropped the first official trailer for Quasi, which provides a look at the troupe's unique take on The Hunchback of Notre Dame, set to premiere on April 20.

The footage features a lot of funny moments, highlighting Broken Lizard's humor, and reveals more about the story, in which "Quasi" wins a lottery that allows him to meet with the Pope.

Brian Cox Introduced the ‘Super Troopers 2’ Team to Edibles: ‘We Discovered He Was a Stoner’
Image
Brian Cox is high on life.

The “Succession” star allegedly gave Broken Lizard, the team behind “Super Troopers,” edibles during the 2018 sequel. Cox played Captain O’Hagan in the cop spoof movies.

“Oh, Coxy. What we tried to do in our early movies was bring someone into the cast that has some gravitas. We were making a $1 million movie and we didn’t have anybody, and Cox came through,” Kevin Heffernan of Broken Lizard told Vulture in an oral history of the first 2001 movie.

Heffernan continued, “At heart, the guy’s a comic. When you watch ‘Succession’ now and all that kind of stuff, you wouldn’t expect that. But he’s a big Jerry Lewis fan, he loves comedies, and he really wanted to do one, so he decided to come slum it with us. Here was a guy who’s a real fucking actor—and he would remind us about that.

Jim Gaffigan's Iconic Super Troopers Scene Only Took Two Hours To Film
Image
While speaking with Screen Rant about his upcoming science fiction dramatic comedy film Linoleum, comedian and actor Jim Gaffigan revealed the challenge - or lack thereof - behind his iconic appearance in the 2001 comedy Super Troopers. Largely considered one of the highlights of the cult classic comedy film, Gaffigan's cameo was popular enough to warrant his return in 2018's Super Troopers 2. Ultimately, the scene in which Gaffigan appeared became arguably the single most enduring moment from the first Super Troopers, and has followed the actor around to this day.

The scene in question is of course Super Troopers' iconic 'Cat Game', in which the officers pull someone over and see how many times they can sneak the word 'meow' into their procedural routine. While surprisingly innocuous for an R-rated comedy like Super Troopers, The Cat Game is relatable to anyone who has been fed up with or sick of a job,...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: September 2021
Image
Though the summer movie season is winding down (if it ever really started this year), Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for September 2021 is chock full of worthwhile movie options.

For starters, Amazon’s library movie titles are quite good this month. September 1 sees the arrivals of heavyweights such as Apollo 13, Arachnophobia, Romeo + Juliet, The Descent, and The Social Network. And if that weren’t enough, the streamer is trying out some intriguing original movies as well. Cinderella, a modern update on the classic fairy tale, premieres on September 3. That will be followed by “exotic thriller” The Voyeurs (Sept. 10), musical adaptation Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (Sept. 17), and French thriller The Mad Woman’s Ball (Sept. 17).

‘4/20’ the Movie Arrives on April 20, Naturally
Corey Moss
Movies traditionally are released in theaters on Wednesdays and Fridays, but come Monday, April 20, “4/20” the movie will be released on Vimeo on the date that’s considered a perennial stoner holiday — it has even greater significance this month seeing as the year is 2020.

Producer Corey Moss, a veteran of MTV and management company Principato-Young, says the film is taking its lead from “Super Troopers 2,” which opened on April 20, 2018, and went on to gross $18.4 million at the U.S. box office. “Whoever picked that release date was brilliant,” he says. “Back then, we jokingly said we should make a weed movie for next year’s 4/20. Then we jokingly said we should call it 4/20. Then we jokingly said it should be like ‘Love Actually’ or the Garry Marshall holiday movies, with multiple storylines that interweave.”

Actually, “4/20” has more in common with Kevin Smith’s stoner classic “Clerks” and Netflix’s series “Disjointed.

Lana reestablishes her friendship with her old friend, Clark Kent, during one of the most difficult periods in her life.”

Austin Powers Director Offers Update On The Fourth Movie
Mike Myers at an event for 2008 MTV Movie Awards (2008)
Can you believe it’s been 18 years since the last Austin Powers movie? Star Mike Myers is notorious for being selective with his roles, which makes sense considering he’s only starred in a few projects since Austin Powers in Goldmember and hasn’t kept a very high profile in recent years.

He’s popped up in a number of movies in supporting roles, true, but they’ve curiously always been as characters in heavy prosthetics. Whether it’s Inglorious Basterds, Bohemian Rhapsody or Terminal, you never quite know he’s in a film until the credits start rolling. Perhaps it’s a stipulation in his contract that he always be partially in disguise. Like it’s a gimmick or something?

In any case, none of this has stopped speculation as to whether we’ll ever get an Austin Powers 4. Each movie in the series made more money than...

John Cho and Kal Penn in Harold & Kumar chassent le burger (2004)
Harold & Kumar Star Kal Penn Wants To Make A Fourth Movie
John Cho and Kal Penn in Harold & Kumar chassent le burger (2004)
Kal Penn, one half of the Harold & Kumar comedy franchise (John Cho being the other half), wants to make a fourth installment. The original, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, was released in 2004 and became a cult classic. This was the height of the DVD era, so it makes sense why it did so well. Just imagine all of the dorm rooms that had a copy of this movie.

That success spawned the 2008 sequel Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, which, you guessed it, revolves around the pair escaping from prison. A third movie, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas then came three years later at the height of the 3D craze. These films certainly know how to capitalize on trends, eh?

Now, nearly a decade has past and Penn thinks it’s time for another hit off of that bong. While speaking with Variety, he said...

Who Goes There Podcast: Ep 234 – Zombieland 2: Double Tap
I don’t fully understand why, but Hollywood has this massive hard-on for releasing sequels to comedies 10 years after the original is released. With the exception of Super Troopers 2 they have all been absolute garbage. Anchorman, Zoolander, Bad Santa, if you loved a comedy in the late ’00’s chances are there’s a terrible sequel […]

Pretenders Trailer Pulls James Franco & Dennis Quaid Into a Wicked Love Triangle
James Franco
The first trailer for James Franco's latest movie Pretenders is here. Franco has had his share of troubles in recent years, after facing multiple accusations of sexual misconduct in the wake of the #MeToo movement. But it hasn't slowed down his creative output any. Not only is Franco starring in a minor role here, but he also serves as director. Now, we have a look at the movie which looks to be a small-scale, human drama that tackles a messy tale of love in the movie business.

The trailer paints an image of a few young dreamers kicking around in late 1970s/early 1980s New York. It doesn't take long before we get to the heart of the issue here. A young filmmaker falls in love with a girl, and his friend similarly becomes stricken by the very same girl. A messy love triangle springs up and we see the situation progress overtime.

Paul Walter Hauser at an event for The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards (2024)
The Batman Wants I, Tonya Star Paul Walter Hauser as the Penguin?
Paul Walter Hauser at an event for The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards (2024)
Could Paul Walter Hauser be our new Penguin in The Batman? While the studio has yet to weigh in officially, that's the fancy new rumor floating around online right now. Writer/director Matt Reeves, who previously helmed movies such as War for the Planet of the Apes and Cloverfield, is currently in pre-production on the long-gestating solo feature, which stars Robert Pattinson as our new Bruce Wayne/Batman. Now, we have this possibly juicy rumor regarding who might be playing one of the villains Battinson will be up against.

Again, we must caution, for the time being, this is merely a rumor and should be regarded as nothing more until it's substantiated elsewhere. That said, according to a new report, Paul Walter Hauser is being eyed as just one of the contenders for the role of Penguin in The Batman. The report doesn't mention who else Warner Bros. may be looking at,...

Now that Josh Gad is officially out of the running, fans are wondering who will play Penguin in The Batman. Rumors continue to swirl about potential castings, but one particular story makes too much sense to ignore. Reports of Paul Walter Hauser potentially portraying the iconic villain have been gaining steam lately. Now they’ve reached an all-time high, as the 32-year-old actor is one of the contenders that director Matt Reeves and Warner Bros. are currently considering to take on the role.

In order to maintain custody rights of his son, Cam (Jim Gaffigan) needs to make some extra cash. So, he starts chauffeuring a low level drug dealer named Mazz, played by Robbie Jones (Temptations: Confessions of a Marriage Councilor). The pay isn't enough, so he finds another way. He kidnaps the dealer's child in hopes of getting ransom. To make things more complicated, Mazz enlists Cam to drive him around the city. Gaffigan had this to say about his character.

Richard Jewell Trailer, Release Date, Cast and Details for Clint Eastwood Movie
Joseph Baxter Oct 3, 2019

Fact-based drama Richard Jewell is Clint Eastwood’s next news-story-inspired directorial effort.

Clint Eastwood may be pushing 90 years old (he turned 89 on May 31), but he’s still got plenty of creative fuel in his proverbial tank; a notion supported by his next directorial effort, Richard Jewell (formerly The Ballad of Richard Jewell), which will focus on the security guard wrongfully accused of attempting to bomb a town square near the 1996 Olympic Games.

Indeed, the onscreen legend and Oscar-winning director, Eastwood, occupied the director’s chair for the Disney/Fox fact-based drama. The film, based on an article of the same name from Vanity Fair, had Eastwood working off a script by Billy Ray, who worked on action-horror film Overlord, Tom Hanks-headlined Captain Phillips, film franchise launcher The Hunger Games and served as writer and credited creator of (now-canceled) Amazon series The Last Tycoon.

Richard Jewell is...

‘Veronica Mars’: Clifton Collins Jr. & Izabela Vidovic To Recur On Hulu Revival
Westworld (2016)
Westworld’s Clifton Collins Jr. and Izabela Vidovic (Wonder) are set for recurring roles in Hulu’s eight-episode Veronica Mars revival set for premiere in 2019.

The reboot returns star Kristen Bell, Enrico Colantoni and Jason Dohring to the series that ran for three seasons on Upn and the CW from 2004-2007. In the revival, spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica (Bell) is drawn into an epic mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.

Collins will play Alonzo, a mid-level hitman for a Mexican cartel. Because of his facility with English,...

Posterized November 2018: ‘Creed II,’ ‘The Favourite,’ ‘If Beale Street Could Talk,’ and More
“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

Welcome to prestige central. All the spooky goblins and demons have disappeared to be replaced by November’s slate of Oscar-nominated artists (with some winners) swinging for the fences in hopes of another. There’s high drama for parents and fantasy flavor for kids with auteur visions from festival season filling in the blanks. While the studios save their super serious stuff for Christmastime, those more “fun” titles of counterprogramming with critical appeal hit theaters now to whet our collective appetite.

Such a tease

‘Dorian': CW Gender-Swaps Oscar Wilde Character, Adds Sitcom Spin to 1890 Story
The CW has put a gender-swapped, comedic take on Oscar Wilde’s novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray” into development.

Written by “Super Troopers 2” alum Marisa Coughlan (pictured above), the series centers on a woman who made a deal with the devil to remain young for 50 years and has spent her half-century of youth living carelessly.

Here’s the official logline for the series: “In this poignantly comedic spin on ‘The Portrait of Dorian Gray’ a woman who made a deal with the devil 50 years ago to remain young has spent the subsequent decades living selfishly and without consequences. As the downsides of eternal youth finally land on her, Dorian is ready to grow up and age gracefully, but, to do so, she’ll have to make amends for half a century of bad behavior.”
